HOSANNA!
Palm Sunday is March 29
FROM THE RECTOR
Still looking for a good book to read for Lent? Try Robert
Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It’s about a refined, kind, educated man of science who develops a potion that transforms him into a boor-ish, violent brute. The potion al-lows Dr. Jekyll to unleash the base impulses that exist within him. After each escapade of cruelty and terror, Hyde turns back into Dr. Jekyll. Ultimately, and tragical-ly, Mr. Hyde takes over. Published in 1886, the book highlights (in dramatic narrative) a reality all humans face: the difference between the “me” the world sees and the darker “me” that lives inside me (the relevant Bible passage here is Romans 7). Johnny Cash explores the same phenomenon in his song, “The Beast in Me” (1994): “The beast in me/Is caged by frail and frag-ile bars/Restless by day/And by night rants and rages at the stars/God help the beast in me.” Most of us are able to keep our beast/Mr. Hyde under wraps. But occasionally, he (or she) makes an appearance. When we’re tired, frustrated, angry, pro-voked, or stressed, we find our-selves saying, thinking, or doing things that don’t align with our values. Sometimes we’re shocked at how quickly this transformation occurs. The reality of our double-ness is acknowledged in The Book of Common Prayer. When we get to the fifth Sunday in Lent, we will pray my all-time favorite collect, in which we will address God as the one “who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men.” Those unruly wills and affections—that’s the “beast in me.”
We will see this also at the end of this month on Palm Sunday. We will celebrate Jesus’ trium-phal entry into Jerusalem—palms waving and hosannas ringing. But with shocking swiftness, we find ourselves crying “Crucify him!” We human beings are fickle and ca-pricious, seesawing between our good intentions and evil desires. We see it in our liturgy and in the scriptures. Jesus is not surprised. AsJohn’s Gospel tells us, “he knew what was in man” (John 2:24-25). He’s got our number and knows the score. He sees our thin veneer of Jekyll-like respectability and our inner Mr. (or Ms.) Hyde. But here’s the amazing thing: He still loves us. The Jesus who is hailed on Palm Sunday and betrayed on Good Friday still willingly goes to the cross for us. His death for us was not because we deserved this costly gift—it was because we didn’t. Jesus is the answer to Cash’s prayer: “God help the beast in me.” As we walk through Lent and journey to Easter, take heart. Your fears and failures are not too much for our Lord. Rest in his grace. Find solace in his love. And may his Spirit work in all of us the transformation for which we long.
Love,
P.S. Hope to see you on Wednes-day nights in the Parish Hall for soup and “Stories of Grace”!P.P.S. Men: Join me for a study of Matthew’s Gospel every Thurs-day at 7:30 AM, Parish Hall. With breakfast tacos!

SPIRITUAL FORMATION
We will look at the spirit of the traditional Chris-tian hours of prayer using the book Seven Sacred Pauses by Macrina Wiederkehr as our resource. The study will be on Monday evenings as a guide for those who would like to move through the seasons of their day with greater mindfulness. The seven pauses are Matins, Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Ves-pers, and Compline. Facilitators are Regina Easley-Young and Rebec-ca Hartberg. For more information or to sign up, call Regina at (254) 366-2409 or Rebecca at (254) 723-5888.

March 4: Grace in FamiliesMarch 11: Grace in Love
March 18: Grace in Hard TimesMarch 25: Grace in Life
A special program for Lent titled “The Life of Christ” will be held at 7:30 PM, March 22, in the Church. Beautiful color projections depicting the life of Christ as painted by the world’s greatest artists across four centuries will be shown. The art was selected from three major American art mu-seums: The Philadelphia Museum, the Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery. Narration and music accompany the presentation. Dennis Guill is the presenter.
‘Life of Christ’ in Art: Presentation offered March 22
Rihanna’s 2011 song, “We Found Love,” is one of the best-selling singles of all time (10 million copies). Its refrain, “We found love in a hopeless place,” is a pretty good descrip-tion of what grace feels like. In Lent, we get in touch with the places in our hearts and lives that can feel hope-less—and we find God can work even there. Join the Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman on
Wednesday nights in Lent as we explore how grace looks & feels through works of film, journalism, art, music, and literature. With stories ranging from humorous to profound, this interactive series will hep us take the religious idea of “grace” and trans-late it into our lives. Soup supper at 6:30, program at 7pm. Nursery and children’s program available.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Lent is a time when we consider God’s holiness, which was expressed in part in the Decalogue, also known as the Ten Commandments. In our 2015 Lenten Sunday School series, we will take a look at the first half in a series called “The First Five.” Each week, a guest speaker will take a look at what these commandments really mean, and what obedience to them looks like in today’s world.

Come to the Table: Communion Class2-session class for children 3rd grade and up begins March 1
All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion in the Episco-pal Church, regardless of age. But many parents prefer to wait until their
children have some understanding of what Communion means. Towards that end, we’re offering “Come to the Table,” a two-part class for chil-dren in third grade and up at 9:00 Sunday, March 1 and TBD by participants’ parents in the Rector’s office. We’ll take about who Jesus is, why he wants us to celebrate the Eucharist, and we’ll talk about the “nuts and bolts”—what words like “Eucharist” and “chalice” mean, how we receive the bread, why we kneel, and more. For each child, at least one parent must also attend the class. Call the church or email [email protected] to register for the class.
Easter News: More eggs needed!! We want our kiddos to get a lot of fun filled eggs. You can stuff them or we can. The basket is right by Jole’s office door. Sunday, April 5, Easter morning, we’ll have an Eas-ter Egg Hunt after the 10:00 AM service in the Great Lawn behind the Parish Hall by the parking lot (where it was last year). Don’t forget to bring your baskets! We also will be flowering the cross for Easter Sunday. If you have pretty spring flowers in your yard, feel free to snip them and bring them with you. Otherwise, flowers will be on hand.
Vacation Bible Camp June 15-19 Sign–up sheets and forms are outside Jole’s door in a folder. Just let her know to save you a spot! The $25 fee will include your t-shirt and a CD. This can be paid along with the formal registration form at a later date. T-shirts will be ordered for all campers and workers. Fill out the form so we can get you the correct size.
Volunteers will be need-ed! Let Jole know if you can help! There will be a variety of jobs. Don’t forget those dates: June 15-19 with a special “Camp Sunday” Church service for St. Al-ban’s Day on the lawn June 21!
Baptism Preparation ClassMarch 22, 11:30 AM
As The Book of Common Prayer says, “Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, the Church” (p. 298). Baptism is offered four times a year at St. Alban’s: during the Easter season, on the Day of Pentecost, on (or the Sunday after) All Saints’ Day, and the First Sunday After the Epiphany (The Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord). This year, those dates are as follows: April 12: The Second Sunday of Easter May 24: Pentecost November 1: All Saints’ Day January 10, 2016: First Sunday after the Epiphany Prior to each baptism, we require a Baptism Preparation Class. This is for adults who are preparing for Baptism, as well as for parents of infants or children who are being Baptized. What is the purpose of this class? In the service of Holy Baptism, people make wonderful and serious promises. It’s important that we under-stand what those promises are. In the class, we will explore the scriptures and learn what Bap-tism means and why it’s important. Our next Baptism class be offered on March 22 from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM. Lunch will be provid-ed and childcare is available. Please contact the church office to register for the class.
7
First Wednesday Lunch March 4 The First Wednesday Lunch will be 11:30 AM, March 4, in the Parish Hall, with food by Patti’s Kitchen. Please RSVP to the church office if you can, but drop-ins also are welcome. Or, come to the 10:00 AM Bible Study and stay for lunch.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Delayne Vaughn grew up in northeast Texas be-tween the small towns of Sulphur Springs and
Paris. He graduated from North Hopkins High School before moving to College Station to attend Texas A&M University. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, he moved to Waco to at-tend George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Bay-lor. He received a Master of Divinity in Theology from the seminary and a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies (Old Testament) from the religion department at Baylor. Approximately a year after completing his seminary degree in 2004, he moved from the Baptist church to St. Alban’s.
Before singing in the choir at St. Alban’s, Delayne was a member of the Century Singers—a mixed-voice concert choir at A&M—and the Waco Symphony Chorus, along with various church choirs in Sulphur Springs, Bryan, and Waco. One reason he was drawn to St. Alban’s was the opportunity to participate in liturgical worship. He has sung in the choir since he began attending St. Alban’s.
Delayne currently teaches math at Waco High School. He enjoys travel, reading, baking, and playing piano and violin.

CHORISTERS SING IN HOUSTON St. Alban’s Choristers with director Dennis Guill traveled to Houston January 30 to participate in the Diocese of Texas’ Annual Youth Choir Festival held at Christ Church Cathedral. The day began early with rehearsals, lunch and then more rehearsals. A group of 38 sang the Office of Evensong in the beautiful cathedral. Pictured with them is St. Alban’s former youth minister, the newly ordained curate, the Rev. Eileen O’Brien (far left).
