History...Horsham Stone has a long and fascinating history, dating back over 130
million years.
Formed under the English Weald and unique to Horsham, the sandstone
is made up of minute grains of sand, which occur naturally in the
Wealden Clay. It also contains high proportions of mica, a shiny mineral
found in many diff erent types of rock, as well as quartz, which is an
abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust.
Together these components have formed the stone, which researchers
have discovered is over 130 million years old. Over time, layers of
sediment further buried the rock until millions of years later movements
of the tectonic plates covering the Earth exposed and then eroded
the stone.
Archaeologists have found evidence of Horsham Stone usage in the
Bronze Age, and the Romans used it extensively in the building of Stane
Street, the important 56-mile Roman road which linked London to
the Roman town of Noviomagus Reginorum, later renamed Chichester.
The Roman villas at Bignor and Fishbourne have fl ooring and roof
slates made from Horsham Stone.
Over the centuries Horsham Stone has been used throughout Sussex and
the surrounding counties in buildings, on roofs, to construct roads and
for interior use. Today it may be seen in modern buildings, conversions
and restorations as well as churches, palaces and new building projects,
where its style and unique properties make it a highly sought-after choice.
One thing is certain: Horsham Stone’s strength and durability are
without question!

Walling...Horsham Stone is ideal for use in the construction of new homes,
extensions, conservation work and landscaping gardens.
The soft tones of Horsham Stone can blend eff ectively with existing
bricks and stone, and its hard wearing characteristics mean it is sought
after by both building and garden professionals. It is also suited for
individual customers seeking unique and stylish product for their home
or garden improvement.
We produce stone for the following types of walling:
Cropped Stone Walling: our standard cropped walling is guillotined to
100mm to 125mm depth on the bed, random lengths and random widths,
and is also buff and blue in colour. We off er a selection service whereby
individual heights and colours can be specifi ed at an additional cost.
Each bag contains approximately enough stone to produce 5 face square
metres of wall.
Natural Stone Walling: selected by hand to various thicknesses to have
a straight face. This is ideal for creating a random natural dry stone wall
appearance. Each bag contains approximately enough stone to produce
4 face square metres of wall.
Gabion Stone Walling: off cuts are placed in metal cages and used for

Paving & Roofi ng...Horsham Stone is in great demand for its ability to create a natural,
weathered surface, which gives an instant feel of tradition and antiquity.
The soft honey-coloured hue of the stone with its tonal variations makes
it an ideal choice to blend in perfectly with a wide range of bricks and
stone material. The stone is available either sawn, or hand-dressed with
fettled edges.
Crazy paving is one of our most popular requests and diff erent shaped
and sized fl agstones will create an individual look. The fl agstones can be
prepared in random lengths.
Horsham Stone paving is equally eff ective when used for interiors and is
ideal for kitchens and hallways. Our fl agstones can be specifi cally ordered
to have the famous ripple marked surface or, alternatively, a natural
fl agstone will consist of a mottled appearance.
Horsham roofi ng slates are the most famous product of Horsham
Stone. The stone has a unique ability to be split into thin roofi ng slates.
We produce the roofi ng slates in the traditional way, using the natural
cleavage in the rock to create thin slates of varying size and thickness.
Alternatively, we can also off er reclaimed Horsham Stone slates and
always have a good selection in stock.
We are able to match individual slates to blend in with existing roof
slates if required. These can be ordered to any size, as well as being
dressed and fi nished by hand.

INDIAN SANDSTONE Ethically Sourced Natural Stone...At Horsham Stone we understand that having a new terrace or patio
can transform your garden, and realise that using the correct stone is
paramount to getting the right look for you.
We import and distribute top quality natural sandstone direct from
India, sourcing stone only from suppliers who meet our stringent
ethical requirements.
Indian Sandstone paving slabs have a natural riven surface with hand-
cut edges and are ideal for use on patios, paths and driveways. They can
be laid both internally and externally creating a uniform transition
from home to garden. The stone can also be supplied tumbled which
gives an antiqued fi nish that is soft underfoot and ideal for laying
around swimming pools. Alternatively a smooth sawn fi nish gives a cool
and contemporary feel to a terrace and is perfect for kitchens or hallways.
The stone will weather over time to give a natural appearance and blend
into your garden or terrace. It is a hard wearing and durable stone and
frost-resistant.
We always keep an extensive range of colours and types in stock that
can be viewed on our patio display area. Free samples and our
expert advice make choosing the right stone for your project easy at
Horsham Stone.
