NEWS AND COMMENT

PRACTICE TRIALSThe last one was at Mannings Heath on 15th June and was onlyattended by 11 riders which was too low to warrant holding the event. We are fortunate that Adrian has undertaken the setting up andrunning of these sessions, he deserves more support than this. Onthis occasion Adrian was entered in the London to Brighton cycle raceand had to be up at 4 am the next day so it was a hard one. At thenext Committee Meeting we will have to discuss if it is worth carryingon with practices or you could show you want them to continue bytelling Adrian at the next event.

PHOTOSI never know what picture will be in the Newsletter as Mike, who doesthe layout, sees what space is available. Of course they’re all(hundreds of ‘em) on the website, not quite as good as getting thepublicity in print. Adrian’s crash in the slalom will be worthy of a fullpage - but if you’ve got others worthwhile from the camping pleasesubmit to Mike now.

MISSING NEWS?Due to the June trial at Walliswood being cancelled there was noNewsletter that month, the previous May issue only went to July sopay attention to the August/September events –

4th August   Club Trial at Mannings Heath is a reverse trial   TeamIndians

25th September   Committee Meeting at Six Bells Newdigate.

FOR SALE Ex John Charman, 1989 Honda Scooter with log book, starts on kick, needs battery, was running round field at camp   anyoffers over £10 accepted   for HR Charity.

THE HOTTEST CAMP EVER – We melt for Charity! But not the best attended unfortunately, we clashed with Murray’sWimbledon final and Lewis Hamilton on TV, plus it was just too hot forsome - John P, and our Chairman had gone to his villa in France toget the good weather! Here’s the weekend story that will make himwish he’d stayed.

Page 4: Horsham Riders July News

FRIDAYNone of our usual earlybirds were on site at 5pm, Tim had the loo-digjob done as Adrian was seeing his daughter off on her prom (whateverthat is!) but I gather  it    expensive.   By 8 pm a  few were on siteincluding Adrian who in about an hour lit a small fire (no boy scout he)but it later roared for about 15 bodies to sit round. Everyone waspleased to see Jamie F make an appearance, unfortunately for theeditor who had promised to eat one of his hot marshmallows if hecame.  I can confirm they are inedible and like evostick won   leaveyour fingers when you try to dispose of them - bring a dog to lick themclean. Phil W renowned for his camping record of 48 lagers for theweekend was down to    dozen ciders but they were about 8% so justas effective. By 1.30 am very much so!

SATURDAYTeam Kwackers, Tony, Phil, Stuart and Cassie plus Adrian set out easyfor the Yankee. They didn’t know where the start was, they wereinformed that whilst the hobbit represented the cock-up theory weexpect members to smooth out the difficulties and not sit aroundboozing till 1.20 am the night before but they just smiled happily. While the entry of only 19 signed on we had some visitors, John C withan old scooter which was a runner – and 3 times it was ridden roundthe field, it was for sale for offers in aid of the charity £10 or bestoffer, we got none so we’re going to put in on E-Bay. Then Dave A(Tea Bag) came on his annual visit to get insulted and abused as hisshed-ful of bikes remained stationary. John P next on a 98cc Guzzihad a brief visit as he lives 17 miles away and it takes 1 ½ hours totravel home on it. Phil has to dash off to his bank – the cider is pricey!

We heard from Tony F of the wonderful care that Jamie had beengiven at the Royal Marsden Hospital so decided part of our charityfund should be sent to them, you’ll see how much at the end. RFHhas had a few thousand over the years so it will be split.

The Yankee went so well that Harry R and Adam H were tempted ontowhites to better their scores. Martin T rode his first trial of this typeand found it more enjoyable and tactical than a normal event. Irelated stories of close run finishes where the top 2 riders were on 195on the last section, one rides the white to make his 200 but he dabs, the other watching rode blue, cleaned and won. Clint rode this one,his first since the collar bone op, but he still won though not on 200but Sean had problems so no cards came to record his score! Therewere 3 or 4 cases of front calipers stuck on, was it bad maintenance

or heat?

By 6 pm we were at the slalom reported separately. Then to thebarbecue, and the evenings’ challenges. The World Wee Skis are nowtraditional, 4 teams entered and much cheating took place. Gordoninformed me he was the new world Champion but it was disputed andwill have to go to higher authority for a decision.

A new woodland game with 2 competitors, bums on ground, with feetbraced against a central log over which one tried to pull the otherover. It was highly contested getting down to the heavyweights, there was no chance of cheating as Tim was observing - Phil W wasdeclared the winner, though after he let Cassie pull him over. Thenall relaxed around the fire, 25 or more on Saturday except Kieran wasso tired he lay on the grass and went to sleep.

SUNDAYThe forecast was 30 deg C for Gatwick area so we moved everythingfurther back into whatever shade we could find. The entire clothingcupboard was on display but we only sold a pair of boots - time againto involve E-Bay. Team Kwackers were out again tightening thesections. The entry was low at 37 as we forgot to advertise ourCharity Weekend. Ray M came, not to ride as his knee has gone buthe contributed to the raffle – good man. Tom H said he may dowhites, signed on as blue, content as cleaning all the sections seemedthe best thing to do on a hot day.

Result on blue route showed an excellent effort from Mike Hyden whocame joint second with Rich Ellis. Adrian came back to his properroute and was ahead of Tim, but Harry R had a hard day and Phil TWretired with a backache - better than a pain in the neck!

On Whites Steve Farrall on 2 bettered Andy D by 1 mark but Tony, having set out 2 days running and entered with Emily in tow and theclear up to complete was getting weary but still ahead of Phil and Mike.

Yellow – Mike B and John Y separated by a single dab andphotographer Steve H a dab above Steve P – they were on all singlefigures. Mick D started the twenties with schoolboy Jack T level withschoolgirl Cassie 4 points away,

Reds – won by an RRND visitor Simon C, taking all the glory fromEmily by a mark, So the trial produced the lowest of scores but only1 absolute clean, Tom H. The half way scores W14, B23, Y30 werenot the lowest as they were uplifted by some heavy losses at thebottom end.

Thanks go to the weatherman and the Kwackers team, Fiona and Timfor all their efforts and everyone else who helped, plus all thecontributions for the raffle prizes and all the riders who bought thetickets! You all helped to make this one of the best camps we’ve had.

After insurance payments to AMCA we had £691.80 to distribute toCharity – it is being allocated at follows –

Royal Marsden Hospital - £400Riders for Health - £300

THE SLALOM – SaturdayDue to the heat, delays and late starts we didn’t get round to startthis exciting bit till 6pm, by which time several had gone home. Overabout 100 yards you had to zig-zag downhill, a tight turn at the

bottom and 4th gear uphill in a straight line. Most riders had 3attempts, some 4, trying to beat their own or the leaders score. Welist their best and worst times below   well done Tony for his win yetagain and thank you and well done Fiona for doing all the stopwatchwork.

Footnotes   Tony’s first ride was his quickest at 25.36 but he didn’tstop within the box so it didn’t count as a result. Other overshootsare noted but Gordon was noteworthy, never mind the limit box hejust couldn’t stop. Best display came from Adrian who did stop, justoutside the box when he smashed into someone’s parked bike and laydown to be photographed by Steve   hope it will be in this issue!
