Drace enjoys many different kinds of cars. The 2009 Chevy Camaro remains his favorite car. When his dad took him to an annual car show in 2010, he gained an interest for cars. This was the first time Drace ever saw a Chevy Camaro and it instantly sparked his interests. He now goes to many car shows each year. He spends his nights studying for his learner’s permit. Someday he hopes to own some of his favorite cars.

Jared, took an interest in cars in early 2012. He continues to build his knowledge of cars by researching car websites, as well as discussing cars and trucks with his older brother Jake. Jared hopes that his interest in cars will stick with him for his whole life, and hopes that he can use his knowledge of cars to help other people buy quality vehicles.

Jesus, a 15 year old, has a special interest for classic cars. He enjoys cars from the the ‘40s to the ‘60s but he does not limit himself. New cars also catch his attention. Ever since his dad told him he would buy him a truck when he grew up, he started to research to see which truck to get. Then his research started to sidetrack from trucks into cars and then to classics, which he decided are whis favorite.

Radiator

The job of a radiator is to keep the engine at a certain temperature so that it does not get too hot or too cold. It does this by releasing a coolant throughout the engine keeping it at the proper temperature.

Engine

A car engine is made up of pistons, which look like a rod attached to a cylinder. These pistons, when the car is running, are moved by a timed spark made by the spark plugs hitting little bits of gasoline. These spark plugs make a spark at the right time, making the pistons move up and down. The pistons moving up and down generating energy for the car to move off of. The exhaust that comes from these sparks is forced down and eventually comes out of the exhaust pipes.

Running Your Car

B.A.

How well do you know your car? Cars are some very compli-cated pieces of machinary. Cars use tons of parts that when working properly make the car very efficient. Some of the most important car parts include the engine, the automatic transmission, the driveshaft, and the disc brakes. With a basic explanation of these parts people will understand the roles these parts play in the function of your own car.

Disc Brakes

When in use, the brake pads on a disc brake squeeze the rotor, in which the force created by this is transmitted hydraulically. The friction between the pads and the disc causes the disc to slow down.

Automatic Transmission

The transmission of a car is made of many systems. With all of these systems working together the transmission will work. An automatic transmission is what helps the engine run properly and it’s what tells the wheels to move. When the car is running, the transmission’s job is to keep the engine’s rotations-per-minute in a certain range. While keeping it within this range, the transmission is telling the wheels to turn at a certain speed.

Driving glasses may seem negligible, but while driving through serious heavy rain, you’ll want to see the road ahead. The yellow tint to the glasses make objects easier to see, and they also reduce eye strain. Overall, these glasses keep you alert in extreme weather conditions. Plus, it’s not that hard to go to the nearest store and buy $10 glasses.

NEVER LIMIT A CAR to its abilities given to it by the manufacturer. A cheap used car can make your friends envious with the right accessories and modifications to complement it. The accessories of a car fit to the needs of the owner. These accessories not only make your car a safer place, but they also offer convenient features that make drives in your car a lot easier. Also, the overall value of the car can increase with certain features. These 10 useful accessories will serve as great additions to your car.

A device that will locate your car can save a lot of time and effort. These devices use technology rivalling that of a GPS system and track the location of your car. Normally these devices come with a remote to locate your car, but now apps let you track your car straight from your smartphone. It can also help you track the location of a stolen car.

A telematics system gives access to features in your car without taking your hands off the wheel. Benjamin Hunting, writer forAutobytel, explains that the Ford SYNC comes with useful features, like hands-free calling and an easy-to-use integration into entertainment. The voice-controlled stereo system and the ability to have incoming texts read aloud can keep you focused on the road.

A keyless ignition system helps you start your car quickly and without hassle.

Molly Edmons wrote that using a key fob in your pocket, your car can detect when you are near and will enable you to start your car with the push of a button. The system reads a personalized code on the key discouraging thieves from taking your car.

Back-up parking cameras represent the perfect tool for those looking out for people around them and for those who need a little help with parking. This contraption consists of a camera placed on the back of the car and a small monitor to let you see the image the car displays. This system normally comes installed in newer models of cars but for a larger fee you can get one installed yourself.

High performance headlights help you see the road ahead. These headlights provide a brighter light. Headlightreviews.com reviewed the Hella High Performance Xenon Blue headlights and explained that they emit a white light that better illuminates the road.

An amazing sound system can make your drives around town even more exciting. Adding new speakers will make your music sound clearer.Recently, we have tested out the Polk Audio DB 6501 component speakers complemented by a Kicker 8-inch subwoofer. This pair could handle every genre of music it was given, and did so with amazing clarity.

Besides Bluetooth compatibility, an IPod connector gets the spot for second best thing to stream music. IPods now rank as the most used MP3 players and they have many different ways to connect to your car. Using a built in dock, you not only can charge your device, but stream music to your sound system, too. The upright dock equipped in a number of new cars puts your IPod in an easy-to-reach, easy-to-use position, convenient for driving.

Having Bluetooth receiver compatibility gives you access to all the entertainment on your phone without having to worry about messy wires and cables. Just sync your phone to the system and play a song to stream the music through the car’s speakers. Almost every smartphone comes with the ability to pair its functions with a Bluetooth device.

Heated seats come in handy more than you’d think. Imagine winter temperatures right after work and having to sit in a freezing cold leather seat for the entire ride home. Heated seats might make the drive home a little more bearable. Heated seats normally come with two settings, High and Low, giving you control over its range of heat.

OUTSIDE OF A COMPACT BUILDING on South Lamar Boulevard across the street from Burger Stadium lies a small sign that reads “Down Under Auto Sales”. Inside, a man named Patrick Peterson scrolls through an online auto auction for used cars. These will be the cars that are sold at his dealership during the week. He buys many different types of cars including trucks and SUVs. Patrick and his brother have sold cars for more than 20 years.

Down Under Auto Sales is a used car dealership started by Patrick and his brother. The dealership was started in 1992 and was originally located across the street from Goodwill.

The used car dealership began when a friend of Patrick’s was going to sell his car. “He didn’t do it correctly, or at least, what I thought would be a good way to sell a car,” Patrick says. “So I bought the car from him and ended

up selling it and making a handsome little profit, so I decided to try it again.”Patrick grew up on a farm in central Wisconsin. He first showed an interest in cars when a friend of his took him to an auto auction in Dallas to buy a vehicle in 1987. He began selling cars as a side job in between going to college at Texas State and working for Anheuser Busch Budweiser. He explains that the name “Down Under Auto Sales” derived from the first location he leased.

“The place that we leased was from one of my managers at Anheuser Busch,” says Patrick. “There was this big sign that said “DU Auto Sales” and to keep expenses low, we wanted to

use that sign. That’s when we came up with “Down Under Auto Sales”.

Since then, the dealership has become more successful and has even moved locations down the street. Patrick explains that now his work for the dealership mostly takes place at home. “My brother and I are the buyers,” Patrick says. “My work starts Monday night, I go online and I shop from several different auctions across the southwest U.S. and then I map out what used cars I want to buy for the week. My main thing at the office is to make sure my employees are happy. Buy them lunch, make sure everyone is in a good mood, keep them healthy, and just keep the good vibe to make

sure everyone realizes that things aren’t very serious.”

Just as Patrick says, employees shouldn’t feel stressed at the dealership.“We actually have a lot of fun,” says Patrick. “We could put video cameras in my office and it would be like a live T.V. feed. People would watch it and laugh their asses off. It’s funny working there. I mean we joke, we laugh with customers.”

Over Patrick’s time at the dealership, he has seen a large spectrum of customers. Of course, he shows respect to all of them.

“You never judge a customer when

Page 13

they come in,” says Patrick. “You can’t, because you’ll most likely be wrong. You’ll have people that you think are wealthy people from Westlake and then they come in and have bad credit and they haven’t paid their bills.”

Patrick also talks about his experiences with impolite customers.

“The worst customer is someone who is nitpicky and thinks they’re entitled.” Patrick says. “We call it someone with a champagne taste with a beer budget. We don’t sell new cars, so if you see a little scratch on the bumper, it shouldn’t matter. What our main concern is to give a good looking car with good mechanics. But in the end, it’s still a used car.”

Patrick explains that even though owning a dealership has it’s challenges that include maintaining payrolls and paying taxes, he enjoys the work that he does.

“Building a business is hard work,” Patrick says. “And you have to really work hard for a lot of hours at first. You also have to maintain it, but once you get your business built, but it’s still a very rewarding business.”

Patrick plans to continue selling cars in the same reliable way he has been doing for the past 21 years.

“And in the end,” Patrick says, “It beats sacking groceries.”

According to the EPA, motor vehicles collectively cause 75 percent of carbon monoxide pollution in the U.S. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) estimates that on-road vehicles cause one-third of the air pollution that produces smog in the U.S., and transportation causes 27 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. has 30 percent of the world’s automobiles, yet it contributes about half of the world’s emissions from cars (auto.howstuffworks). This could be changed if more people would drive more fuel efficient cars, but they are so much more expensive. A new technology called SKYACTIV created by Mazda is now available, it gives drivers better fuel-economy while keeping their cars in an affordable price range. Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technology is different than most other companies fuel efficient cars due to the fact that it is a unit rather than one component of a car. Does this make it better? It depends on the person, but it certainly has helped Mazda compete with other car manufacturers.

Page 15

SKYACTIV-G: SKYACTIV-G is a 2.0 Liter gasoline i4 engine, which is a pretty normal engine until you see the components on the inside. The main difference between a SKYACTIV-G engine and a normal engine is its dome-topped pistons. What Mazda did is they put a dome on top of each of the pistons increasing the compression ratio from 10:1 to 13:1. What this means is the air in the chambers is being compressed more allowing the car to use less gasoline to cause a normal sized explosion giving the car better gas mileage. The problem that Mazda had to solve was knocking because when the compression ratio is higher it gets hotter in the chamber earlier causing the explosion to occur too early. What Mazda did was put a little cavity in the top of the piston so that the heat stays inside of the cavity instead of spreading out and overheating the chamber. As well as the cavity, Mazda put in a six-point direct injection system that sprays

such a fine mist, it extinguishes the explosion in the chamber as it’s happening. The direct injection system has another job other than cooling the chamber which is it covers the whole chamber which means less gas is being wasted giving the car better gas mileage. To help improve the gas mileage and lower the strain on the engine Mazda is using a 4-2-1 exhaust system, said Frank Nicks, a Mazda Certified Sales & Leasing Consultant at Mazda South in Austin. “Well what it does is it starts out on the side of the engine. You have four exhaust ports, one for each cylinder so what they have is a plate with four pipes coming through it those four pipes funnel down into two pipes and they come out through the exhaust its kind of like a header system, a header system they all funnel out individually down into one dump but this is kind of the same but it has two coming in to each side most cars they all come into one.” He

THE ENGINES

also said, “by getting rid of all that exhaust that quickly it increases the horsepower and the torque.”All of these components together are according to Nicks what give the better performance and better gas mileage than Mazda’s normal engine.

SKYACTIV-D:

Recently, Mazda has developed a new engine the SKYACTIV-D, a diesel engine with the lowest compression ratio at 14:1. It comes equipped with a two-stage turbocharger which greatly contributes to the diesel engine’s high torque, but invaluable in reducing emissions and fuel consumption. The two-stage turbocharger has one small and one large turbo which are used at different times depending on the driving conditions. This technology achieves high torque and response at low speeds, and high power at high speeds. The release of Mazda’s first car equipped with SKYACTIV-D will be in late 2013.

SKYACTIV-Drive

One of Mazda’s transmissions is the SKYACTIV-Drive. The SKYACTIV-Drive is Mazda’s automatic transmission that comes equipped with only their SKYACTIV models. Mazda has done two different things with their automatic transmission, one is they’re building it out of lighter material and number two is they are now using a small lock up torque converter that works off of a belt and centrifugal force instead of using a big heavy oil filled torque converter. With these two changes the transmission is much lighter and more efficient. “The other thing [they’ve] done [is] with the computer they’ve set the shift points way more accurate so the transmission knows when to shift it knows when to downshift depending on the amount of strain and pressure you’re putting on the car. [This] all that together helps along with the SKYACTIV engine to create [a] better fuel economy,” Nicks said. Another transmission that Mazda has is the SKYACTIV-MT. The SKYACTIV-MT is a manual transmission, it was released in February 2012 and is available in the CX-5, the MAZDA6, and in some models of the MAZDA3.

i-ELOOP

Mazda’s i-ELOOP is a regenerative braking system. How this works is by every time the car is stopped the energy from the braking sends a charge into a capacitor. Having a regenerative braking system will keep your car going for longer because less strain will be put on the engine. A normal car takes energy from the engine which means an extra constant strain is being put on the engine, with this technology less strain is being put on so the engine will have a longer lifetime and it will perform much smoother.

SKYACTIV Technology is very different due to the fact that it is a whole system. This system will give drivers a smooth ride and above average gas mileage in the 30-40 miles per gallon range. As the years go on Mazda has been adding more and more components to this technology and will continue to do this to give Mazda drivers the best experience they can get.

PLATFORM

SKYACTIV-Body and Chassis:

The SKYACTIV-Body is 8% lighter and 30% more rigid, “ What [this] means is by using lighter stronger steel the body frame and body panels [won’t] flex as much, all cars flex when you give them power, when you run over bumps, [and] when you turn corners. You can’t see it, but your body panels are constantly flexing so by making the frame and the body panels more rigid it takes away a lot of that flex, [with less flex] you [get] a nicer more smooth ride, [as well as it being] a little safer,” said Frank Nicks. What Mazda also did was they put stronger steel in the frames so that along with having crumple zones they have energy disbursing panels. The energy dispersing panels send the energy away from the seating area and send it down the side of the body, over the roof, and through the floor pan.

Car with front collision sensors, the sensors tell the driver when in danger of collision.Photo by Insurance Institute For Highway Safety

YOU HAVE JUST FINISHED DINNER in the brown and orange restaurant at the corner of your office. After an arduous day of work nobody would want to deal with more paper work for the day. While waiting to go home in the driveway, the car in front of your backs up, your front bumper reduces the impact but it came at a great cost. The right side of the bumper has no recognizable components. Now you have to call the insurance and explain all that happen, and then argue with the noisy and wrinkly lady that comes out of the car trying to make you feel guilty after she baked up into your car.

Unfortunately people have to deal with this every day. Argue with the insurance for them to pay the repair costs, explain everything to your family and friend and on top of that you need to find a repair shop that will do a good job. After having a car accident a lot of people take their automobile to Caliber collision “It’s our highest purpose to completely satisfy every customer that we serve while becoming the collision repair provider of choice in every community we serve.” Says Mr. McMaster, regional manager of Caliber Collision.

People that got to Caliber Collision generally satisfied with the service offered by the staff in the Caliber Collision shops. Sandy Maurer said, “I have brought cars [here] before and had a really good experience.” According to Mr. McMaster, the most important thing is to “[be] empathic to their needs and [to create a] level of trust.” Making the customers feel better will help us explain what we need to do to their car.

Jordan Strohm said “My car was repaired in a timely manner; they also cleaned my car inside and out.” Although workers in Caliber Collision do a good job in helping you feel better some people have objections to when it comes to repairing their car.

Sandy Maurer said, “I got [my car back] with more scratches that I took it in with and although they cleaned the inside they left some coffee cups inside.”

Sandy dint like her experience this time but she had had better experiences before. She got most of the scratches repaired for no cost but she dint like the fact she had to leave her car for a longer time in the shop.

Page 23

According to Mr. McMaster the cars that come into the shop reflect the percentages of the cars sold across the US.

Sandy Maurer took in a Nissan Altima, Jordan Strohm repaired his Chevrolet Traverse and Nicholas Katz took in a Dodge Ram.

With such a diversity of cars the proses of restoring every car that comes into the shop is customized depending on the car’s needs. The car is inspected to decide the method in which to restore it.

“[The hardest part of the restoration proses is] the complexity of today’s vehicles and technologies,[OEM’s] now use in today’s vehicles like airbags, adaptive lighting, crash sensors and [rewiring harnesses].”

Putting the airbags back into their original position takes a lot of skill. In order to restore the car to the original conditions the car parts should get ordered from the company that made the car. Sometimes the car companies object from letting people buy separate car parts for the simple fact the car parts being.

The lights used in the adaptive lighting system are especially tricky to restore because the lights have a turning mechanism that allows them to pivot towards the

cars direction. After the lights get damaged everything has to be reconstructed.

The crash sensors used in the cars send a signal to the main computer reporting the accident. Once this happens the computer might crash depending on how hard the car crashed. To fix the computer all the sensors have to be replaced.

Caliber Collision is always there to help restore your car to it’s original condition, the car it was before the accident.
