We want to thank this person for this inquiry, and to take this opportunity to remind others that they are also welcome to submit Biblical questions for us to address. “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then MUST be …” (1st Timothy 3:1-2), and, “Likewise MUST the deacons be …” (1st Timothy 3:8). The qualifications of an elder, and of a deacon, are imperatives. These commandments are not mere suggestions, but attributes, and qualifications, which every man who seeks to hold these offices MUST possess. One can study these qualifications by reading the following passages (1st Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-14, 1st Peter 5:1-4, Acts 6:1-4, and/or other related passages). Many of these qualifications are applicable to all Christians. For example, the Christian, as well as an elder, or a deacon, MUST be blameless, “A bishop then MUST be blameless …” (1st Timothy 3:2), and, “… then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless(1st Timothy; 3:10). To all Christians, Paul penned, “Do all things without mur- murings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke …” (Philippians 2:14-15). While the word blameless in these verses is three different Greek words, they all carry the same basic meaning, to be blameless. This is not to say that these men have never sinned, because, … the scripture has concluded all under sin …” (Galatians 3:22), and Paul penned, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Even Peter, who was also an elder, sinned in denying and forsaking our Lord in His darkest hour, “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder …” (1st Peter 5:1), and, “Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also was with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all …” (Matthew 26:69-70), and, “… Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled” (Matthew 26:56). To be blameless simply means that currently there is no sin or wrong doing in our life which can be brought against us. Undoubtedly, when Peter was appointed as an elder, he had already repented of past sins, and was currently living above reproach. All Christians are to be blameless. Other qualifications may not be possessed by all Christians, but this does not mean that the elder, or deacon, is a bet- ter Christian, or person, than all other Christians. For example, an elder has to have the ability to teach, “… apt to teach(1st Timothy 3:2). But just because he possesses this ability does not mean that he is better, or more important to God, than all other Christians. It is simply an ability he must have to perform the work of an elder. He, and the deacon, must have experience in exercising rule, and fidelity, so they must also have a wife, “A bishop then must be … the husband of one wife …” (1st Timothy 3:2), and, “Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife …” (1st Timothy 3:12). They must also have children who are under their control (1st Timothy 3:4 and v12). To be a Christian, one does not have to have a wife, or children, but to serve as an elder, or as a deacon, one must have both. In short, the elder, and the deacon, must meet certain criteria in order to serve in these offices, but this doesn’t make them better, or more important in the eyes of the Lord, than any other Christian. Again, thank you for your question, and we look forward to others doing the same. UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “WHY ARE WE TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT PERSON?” Help Wanted Farmhand needed!
