Limpopo - South Africa The Horse Safari Assistants' Programme takes place on the 15,000ha big five Abelana Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger region of South Africa, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and a diversity of wildlife. The programme offers a unique opportunity to visit a big five game reserve and to obtain hands- on, behind the scenes experience at a busy horse safari operation. Our objective in launching the programme is to offer young, energetic travellers who might not be able to afford such a safari the chance to participate in an experience that will create lifelong memories while being part of a dedicated safari team, contributing to the smooth running of the operation. The programme runs for a minimum of 21 days and interns are expected to participate in the following: Assist in the daily care of horses Take care of riding equipment Do groundwork with the horses Exercise horses daily Tack up horses for safari clients Assist with basic hospitality Assist the anti-poaching team with fence patrols on horseback Join the occasional game drive where available Join guests on horse safaris where available An excursion to the Kruger National Park The level of engagement with the horse training will depend on your level of horse training education, but all participants in the programme will be expected to be proficient riders, have a love for horses and a desire for adventure. Accommodation is provided at Hope House, where management and staff of Abelana Safari Camp and Abelana Horse Safaris live. Along with our stable yard, this will be your home from home, with private but simple sleeping quarters and shared ablution and cooking facilities.
