Louise is one of our Diocese’s Pastoral Care Practitioners trained and supported by CatholicCare for those in hospital at their most vulnerable. The funding for the Hospital Chaplaincy Program is through our Charitable Works Fund (CWF) appeal which will take place next week. Thanks to the support of our parishes, 5 Pastoral Care Practitioners are ministering God’s love across 7 hospitals across the Diocese. Through your generous donations, you can provide Pastoral Care Practitioners like Louise for those in hospital. Gifts to the CWF are 100% tax deductible and support CatholicCare, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), St Edmunds and St Lucy’s Schools and the Ephpheta Centre. (Envelopes in church to take home this weekend.) For more information on the CWF, please call the parish office or Liane Leslie, Diocesan Development and Relationships Manager on 9847 0444. PARISH MISSIONARY COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, Many of you may not be aware that we have a Parish Missionary Council that seeks to listen and respond to the hopes, ideas, needs and concerns of all our parishioners. It encourages and supports the continuing good work of existing groups within our parish. We set short-term and long-term pastoral goals for our parish community within the framework of Diocesan priorities and we provide support for our Priests/Dean and Deacon, working collaboratively with them and with each other. Over the last few months we have lost a number of members of the Council through resignation, relocation and recently the death of Barbara Gillis. We are now seeking additional parishioners to join the Council. The work load is not onerous (we only meet once a month usually from 7pm to 8pm on the first Wednesday of the month). We would like for the Council membership to be as representative of the Parish as possible. Therefore we welcome enquires from both males and females from upper high school age through to older ages. If you would like to know more please contact Fr Robert or the parish office. I look forward to any inquiries – kind regards, Peter Karbowiak — Chair Parish Missionary Council. WORLD FAIRTRADE CHALLENGE During 12 - 14 May 2017 please take up the challenge and purchase Fairtrade products for the two days, two weeks or maybe two years+ Fairtrade works hard to connect producers with global markets and make trade fairer. OZ market has grown by 70% in the past 5 years! enabling more hard working farmers and workers around the work to build better futures for themselves, their families and their communities. Thank you! Look for the logo: TIME FOR US TO DRAW THE LINE Timor Leste (East Timor) is Australia’s nearest neighbour. During WW 11 this small country came to our aid and paid dearly with 60,000 East Timorese losing their lives. Colonised by Portugal and then abandoned to harsh Indonesian rule, the country and its people survived to establish independence, sovereignty and nationhood. The history of this young nation’s dealings with Australia to achieve parity and a fair deal in terms of its oil and gas resources was outlined in last week’s bulletin – the matter has now gone to a United Nations Conciliation Commission to determine whether its sea border with Australia should be based on the normal median line between the two nations and not on the basis of Australia poaching the valuable resources of this small country by an inequitable and paternalistic treaty. Determination of the matter will be made in September but in the meantime it is critical that all fair-minded Australians....

YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS

HEALING MINISTRY IN THE PARISH Tuesday 16th May, 7pm-8pm in the Cathedral. My name is Louise Smith, and I have been encouraged by Fr Robert Borg to exercise a healing ministry at Hornsby Cathedral Parish. This ministry is simply the next stage in a personal prayer ministry and listening presence I have had with priests, religious and parishioners since 1987. The importance of relationship with Christ is central to our journey here on earth. Holy Mass and the Sacraments help us to remain Christ centred and "others" focused. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament gives us the freedom, privilege and opportunity to bring our brokenness and our story to Jesus. The Healing Service will begin with Exposition where there is a brief reflection on Scripture. As silent adoration of the Blessed Sacrament continues, there will be opportunity for the Sacrament of Penance and, separately, for those who wish to avail of it, individual prayer for healing. The healing service will last one hour from 7pm to 8pm. There is no requirement for anyone to approach the sacrament of penance or to ask for healing prayer. But all who attend are encouraged to remain in quiet prayer and adoration in the healing presence of the Lord. Come and see…

I will be do the following chore for you

From:___________________________

Invisible Mums It all began to make sense - the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?' Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible; 'The Invisible Mum.' Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the History Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.' I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated with honours - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, and she's gone! Recently I was given a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I read the inscription: 'To Cathy, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.' In the days ahead I would read and discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fuelled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything. A legend in the book told of a rich man who visited the cathedral while it was being built and saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.' I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Cathy. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no meal you've cooked is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.' At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is a cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness, an antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder, as one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, who work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree. When I really think about it, I don't want my children to tell their friends all I am doing for them. That would mean I'm building a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want them to want to come home. As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate

the splendour of true love; to you we turn with trust..

Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too

may be places of communion and prayer,

authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again

Experience violence, rejection and division;

may all who have been hurt or scandalised

find ready comfort and healing.

Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful

of the sacredness and inviolability of the family,

and its beauty in God’s plan.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer.

Amen.

NATIONAL FAMILIES WEEK 15-21 MAY 2017

The strength of the family “lies in its capacity to love and to teach how to love. For all a family’s problems, it can always grow, beginning with love”. Pope Francis Amoris Laetitia 53 The theme of Families Week 2017 is, Stronger Families, Stronger Communities. Families are a central building block of our communities and the wellbeing of a community is enhanced by family wellbeing.

CHRISTIAN LIFE PROGRAM Couples for Christ Australia invites you to attend the Christian Life Program that it has organised for the parishioners of Hornsby Cathedral, Pennant Hills and Ku-ring-gai Chase parishes.

This is an adult faith programme which aims to assist Christians in: 1. Enriching their faith 2. Enhancing their relationship with and discipleship of Jesus Christ and 3. Living out more fully the gifts of the Holy Spirit

This program is somewhat different from some of the Christian faith programs that you might have attended in the past in the sense that this is organised by lay people – the same people who sit next to you in church and who are involved in various church ministries. The organisers are the modern-day disciples of Jesus Christ who are willing to share their knowledge and their faith experiences. Above all, these are people who have answered the challenge of spreading the joy that they experience from their close friendship with Christ.

Lastly, the Couples for Christ Australia group who will run this program, is a family-oriented group whose members commit to making Jesus Christ the centre of their family life. Choose it well, Use it well – Tapping the Power of Music in Liturgy Music is the Church’s most important art form because it plays an integral role in Catholic liturgy. Tapping into the power of liturgical music to engage the assembly in sung prayer can enable the full, fruitful and joyful expression of our faith. This formation day for parish liturgical musicians is being offered in response to the Parish Liturgical Music Surveys completed by parishes across the Diocese early in 2017. The workshop will introduce principles for choosing appropriate liturgical music and how to use it effectively in liturgical celebrations. We will focus on identifying processes to help parish leadership teams (priests and musicians) to work collaboratively to build up good liturgical music practices. All parish musicians, clergy and interested parishioners are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity. Presenter: Professor Clare Johnson, Director of the ACU Centre for Liturgy

THE CHARITABLE WORKS FUND (CWF)

What is the CWF?

Fact Sheet

The Diocese of Broken Bay Charitable Works Fund is a Diocesan‐wide Appeal that runs three times a year to raise funds for charities in the Diocese.

Which charities does the CWF support? The CWF splits the funds donated between five groups that directly support people in our Diocese. Each of the three Appeals in 2017 will focus on particular charitable activities the CWF supports.

a

Can I get a Tax Deduction for my donation? Yes. All donations over $2 are 100% tax deductible. Please ensure that the CWF envelopes are completed so that a receipt may be provided to you for your tax records.

How does my Parish benefit from my donation? Every Parish in the Diocese is set an individual target for raising funds for the CWF. Your donations are applied to your Parish, which is then applied to the Parish target. If the Parish does not meet the target, then Parish funds are needed to cover the Parish target.

What if the Parish goes over the target? All money raised for the CWF is given to the CWF to be distributed to the five areas identified above. If a Parish meets its target, the funds are still provided to the CWF to support those in need. We thank you for your generosity.

Can I make a donation online? To ensure that all donations are allocated to a Parish, donations can only be made online to the individual Parish website. Please check your Parish website or contact your Parish office to make a donation. Envelopes will be available in Church this weekend.

WELCOME TO MANNY BAUTISTA who will be speaking about his ‘40-day reflection on the care for our Common Home’ at all Masses at the Cathedral this weekend. LIVING LAUDATO SI’: The Ecological Challenge of Pope Francis, the book written by Manny Bautista was recently published. The book is a 40-day reflection on some of the important themes of Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si'. It highlights the interconnectedness and interdependence of all creation and our integral relationship with the natural world. The book contains 40 short reflections and prayers, and provides us with concrete and practical ecological actions to respond to the call and invitation of the Holy Father to become carers of the Earth, our Common Home. The reflections are helpful in rediscovering our eco-vocation as carers of God's creation, rekindling a sense of intimacy and communion with the natural world, and facilitating the much-needed ecological conversion. The book is being endorsed by six Australians, including Bishop Peter A Comensoli of the Diocese of Broken Bay and Professor Denis Edwards of ACU, one Filipino, and one American.

Manny will visit our Parish on 13-14 May to promote his book after the weekend masses. You will have the opportunity to have your book signed by him. Price per copy: AU$20.00 Postage cost: AU$5.00
