Wally’s Drive-In:The best place to get a milkshake

Brianna Bakke A d s M a n a g e r

Wally’s is a place for anyone who wants to hang out with friends or just go out for a bite to eat. A lot of people said they enjoy just being there and they “Iike the atmosphere.” Wally’s gives you three options of where to eat! You can go inside and relax or on a nice day you could enjoy the weather out-side while eating or even go in the drive-in and eat in your car! This is one of the rea-sons why it is so relaxing to be there. “A perfect stop for some fish-n-chips and an awesome burger….Or just a milk-shake. Casual atmosphere is very comfort-able. You won’t regret the visit,” said a happy customer on the Wally’s website. In a poll, 20 people were asked if they like Wally’s and all 20 people said yes! Then they were asked if milkshakes were the best thing on the menu and 17 out of 20

people agreed. Most people recommend the chocolate or peanut butter milkshake. The most random milkshake said was peach! If you haven’t gone to Wally’s many people recommend you go, even if you just want a milkshake! After one milkshake you will have a new favorite place to get them.

Greenlake lights up with holiday spirit

Mckenna Potter

R e p o r t e r

It’s that time of the year, when Christmas lights are out, trees are cut down, and presents are being wrapped. Holiday events are showing up everywhere and there’s nothing better than grabbing a buddy and heading over to one.

The second weekend of every December, Greenlake in Seattle is lined with paper lanterns on the trail, mystical balloons hung in trees, and twinkling lights up in the sky. As you walk around the beautiful three mile lake, you are sure to spot some elves building delicious gingerbread houses, and all your favorite characters from Charlie Brown rowing little boats across the lake.

Around every turn there are Christmas carolers showing their yuletide cheer, singing you into the holiday spirit. Hot apple cider and hot chocolate are sure to keep your hands warm while you walk around the massive circle, spotting other passerby’s decked out in tacky Christmas sweaters and Santa hats.

If you missed this year’s festivity, be sure to put it on your calendar for next year, it’s a must see! But Greenlake isn’t just for Christmas, many Seattle-ites find refuge here when they just need to get away.

It’s a great running trail, with many cool shops nearby and delicious restaurants. Washington is blessed with many beauti-ful sights to go see, make sure Greenlake is one of them!

Wally’s is located on Highway 410 just as you enter Buckley from Enumclaw.

Federico Canosa Exchange student

For “six months and nine days” we have an exchange student named Federico Canosa. He is a junior who plays sports such as cross country. He made friends quickly “because of cross country and ask-ing for help.” He wanted to become an exchange student “because I wanted to experience the world, be in another place for a while, get to know people from that place and remember them forever”. For other people having him here was a great thing, “he is the funniest/ sweetest guy I’ve ever met! I love having him here,” said Jordan Koontz. For Rachel Revell “it was great getting to know him during cross country, he is such a nice and funny guy.” Federico will be missed by many when the time comes for him to go back home, “I’ll miss his awesome accent and just him as a person. He’s been such a great friend

and I’ll miss that,” said Brianna Harder. For others such as Nathan Nguyen he won’t be missed because “I am going to keep him.” Federico will miss his new friends “a lot!” He “hopes to come back another time” to visit them.

Crystal employees back to workQuenten DeaDy

R e p o r t e r With Crystal Mountain being one of the two main snowboard-ing/skiing destinations of all the kids at Enumclaw High School it’s not surprising that many of the kids here work there. Being a Crystal Mountain employee has its advantages and benefits. I worked at crystal last year and it was the best job I’ve had so far.

One of the few dozen employ-ees at Crystal from EHS this year is Thomas Horn; “it’s awesome because I’m working in a place that I love and not only that, but we get some really good discounts for working here.” Employees that work at Crystal Mountain get a season pass for a mere 75 dollars, and that includes unlimited weekdays to

Snoqualmie. They also get 70% off food and various discounts at the gift shop. If you love to snowboard or ski then working at Crystal Mountain is the job to have! You’re sur-rounded by the environment that you love so much and some really friendly people. Make sure to con-sider it when the next job fair rolls around.

Big changes for Windows 8Daniel Serfling

R e p o r t e rWindows 8 is the newest

release of the Windows operating system, produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers. Its existence was first announced at CES 2011 and the operating sys-tem was released to manufacturing on August 1, 2012, and released for general availability on October 26, 2012.

Windows 8 introduces sig-nificant changes to the operat-ing system’s platform, primarily focused towards improving its user experience on mobile devices such as tablets to rival other mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS. It uses new technologies;

such as USB 3.0, UEFI firmware, near field communications, cloud computing and the low-power ARM architecture, and also has new security features along with other changes and performance improvements.

Windows 8 also introduces a new shell and user interface based on Microsoft’s “Metro” design, featuring a new Start screen with a grid of updating tiles to represent applications, a new app platform with an emphasis on touchscreen input, the new Windows Store to obtain and purchase applications for the system, and the ability to synchronize programs and settings between multiple devices.

There are a few more system

requirements for Windows 8 than Windows 7. Windows 8 now requires that a system’s CPU sup-port certain hardware features, specifically the PAE, NX bit, and SSE2. Windows Store apps also require a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher to run.

“What’s next?” stated Kyle Terrell.

“I don’t really care for this new system and the requirements to use it make the overall price too much.”

Overall it seems like a promis-ing new format to use on PC, and hopefully will lead to better per-formance and improved systems in the future.

Students deck halls with holiday cheercarly HinMan

R e p o r t e rAn Enumclaw High School holiday tradi-tion, the week leading up to winter break marked the 2012 holiday spirit week and Winter Wishes assembly.

Kicking off the week, students wore their pajamas to school on Monday, followed by Tuesday’s Tacky Sweater Day.

“My favorite thing about spirit week is…seeing all the cool cats dress up,” said junior Sarah Morrow.

Following Tacky Sweater Day, Wednesday was girls versus boys as the two battled it out in red and green. On Thursday, students wore their favorite holiday hats, followed by the traditional class color day on Friday with freshmen in white, sopho-mores in gold, juniors in maroon, and seniors in black.

“Class color day is my favorite spirit day because it’s a battle between the classes,” said junior Megan Lesmeister.

Spirit days were only a part of the week. EHS’s Leadership students worked hard to grant over 198 student wishes before the end of the week, as well as putting on a Winter Wishes assembly for the entire school.

“My favorite parts of Winter Wishes were Daisy Rhodes and I taking pictures with Santa (a.k.a. Blake Hilderbrand), singing Christmas carols in leadership, and seeing how generous the Enumclaw community is!” said Leadership student Sarah Ivie.

The assembly recognized spirit winners, including Tori Turnbow, Amelia Johnson, and Kelsey Cunningham. First place for the week-long door decorating competi-tion went to the classrooms of Mrs. Wein-brecht, Mr. Kilmer, Mr. Wallace, Mrs. Sandfer, and Mrs. Ross. Winter sports were also given a chance to represent their teams with games played by captains from boys and girls basketball, girls gymnastics, boys and girls wrestling, and boys swim-ming.

Pennies for Sandy

carly HinMan

R e p o r t e rTeaming up with the American

Red Cross and the Enumclaw School District Kindness and Compassion Club, the Enumclaw High School Key Club looks to give something back to its community with a penny drive for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

“The penny drive is a great project that will help many people that were affected by the storm. Our hope is that many people will make a dona-tion, even if it’s just a little. Every cent counts!” said Key Club’s Presi-dent Chelsea Weiman.

Affecting at least 24 states and causing over $63 billion in damage, Hurricane Sandy destroyed thousands of homes in the U.S., leaving millions without electric service, and killing at least 131 people in eight states. The sheer size of the storm (over 1,100 miles in diameter) makes Sandy the deadliest hurricane to hit the Unit-ed States mainland since Hurricane

Katrina in 2005, as well as the deadli-est hurricane to hit the U.S. East coast since Hurricane Diane in 1955.

The American Red Cross is spon-soring a penny drive to help the victims of the storm, and Key Club is bringing it to Enumclaw High School. Students are encouraged to make a donation and bring coins to school to deposit in the collection containers in their classrooms. Gifts may also be delivered to the school office. All contributions will be dis-tributed to those who have suffered in the wake of the storm.

“I am hoping that everyone in the school can contribute something. It will add up and help a lot of people that were affected by the storm,” said Monica Whitfield, a Key Club mem-ber as well as its vice president.

Students looking to get involved in the Hurricane Sandy Penny Drive are welcome to attend a Key Club meet-ing or contact a Key Club officer for more information.

Top five must-see Ski movies

1. 2012“Superheroes of Stoke”MSPSuperheroes of Stoke celebrates MSP’s past and Present with exactly 20 years of ski film clips showcasing its best moments that have helped to bring freeskiing to where it is today. This film honors the heroes and pays tribute to fallen Skiers of the world of skiing. The old material from the past 19 years has been Pieced together with high-end HD footage to compare what it was and what it will become

2. “The Way I See It” 2010 MSP“The Way I See It,” derails from the standard ski movie plot with a calming and inspiring segment on Ingrid Backstrom and her brother Arne, who recently passed away. But above all the film includes epic shots from the alpine of British Columbia with “Mark Abma and Eric Hjorleifson, an epic kicker at Alyeska with Bobby Brown and friends” “This is definitely one of MSP’s best movies,” Ingrid Backstrom says. “The skiing is completely insane, the cinematography somehow manages to be even better than in the past and it really captures the total feeling of skiing.” I couldn’t agree any more.

3. Steep (2007): Sony ClassicsWhether you are a backcountry skier, a ski mountaineer or just a happy-go-lucky, resort-loving ski bum, you had to appreciate the way the sport was portrayed in Steep. Anytime you take “a pair of two-by-fours strapped to your feet,” as Canadian steep-skiing legend Eric Pehota put it, and start sliding down wild, snow-sheeted mountains, you’re getting after it. The fact that the film also provided an intimate look at the legend of Doug Coombs elevated it into an even more impressive realm. And the depiction of extreme skiing’s roots, when fearless Europeans risked death on straight skis in the perilous French Alps, was wholly inspiring. I can never get enough of this movie.

4. Yearbook” 2005, Matchstick Productions Shane McConkey shines in this ski movie with clips of his awesome base jumping on skis Other locations include Bella Coola, BC, the Alps of Norway and Aspen. Athletes in the film include Tanner Hall, Mark Abma, Ingrid Backstrom, Tanner Rainville, and Eric Pollard just to name a few. 5. Cold Fusion (2007): Warren Miller When you make as many movies as Warren Miller did, you’re going to need to be always pro-gressing. Cold Fusion, more than any other of his modern films, represents that shift by featuring everything from park skiing, to giant cliff drops, to wild avalanche escapes, to the same make your jaw drop pow scenes that these films are known for.

Creatine:Controversial supplement helps some make gains

Bigger, Faster, Stronger. Creatine is widely used but has also been surrounded by confusion and many questions regard-ing whether or not it is safe and effective to use. Steven Knapp a former Enumclaw high school student and avid Creatine user says “ I’ve taken Creatine off and on for many years, I have personally had no problems while taking it and personally love the results you get after taking it.” There are two main types of Creatine used today. Creatine monohydrate and Creatine hydrochloride. They are both one of the most heavily researched supple-ments taken today. It is not like Creatine is some super chemical that is going to get you ripped instantly, it’s actually an organic acid found naturally in food, and it exist in significant quantities of meats like beef and fish. Creatine is used to get bigger, stronger, and lift longer and heavier. It does this by hitting our muscles at the cellular level act-ing as a phosphate donor. Our body’s ener-gy currency - a molecule called Adenosine Tri Phosphate, or ATP - uses phosphate

to power certain cellular processes, dur-ing exercise; ATP is broken down to Adenosine Di-Phosphate (ADP), where it loses one of its phosphate molecules. This is where creatine comes in. As your ATP storage become depleted, performance can suffer. Creatine phosphate can help restore ATP by donating its phosphate to ADP to reform ATP. In this way, creatine can help improve performance and has also been shown to increase strength and power. Creatine has stood the wrath of time; it has shown to be affective over and over again and that it is a safe supplement to take if your looking to get bigger, faster, stronger.

Christmas music with a spin

tHoMaS Horn

R e p o r t e r

You know it’s that time of year again when you turn on your radio and jingle bells starts playing. Christmas music has all sorts of different variations but you know what genre you never hear Christmas correlated with? Rock n’ roll and maybe some metal here and there.

Have I got an awesome new album for you? Yes I do! August Burns Red: Presents Sleddin’ Hill, an album entirely dedicated to the holiday joy of Christmas! Even if you’re not a fan of the typical Christmas music, August Burns Red puts a totally new spin on this stereotypical so called “Christmas music.” Incorporating the style of music know as rock/metal you’ll be blasting your favorite Christmas tunes as you drive by looking cool in front of all of your friends.

With the songs arranging from Frosty the Snowman to We Wish You a Merry Christmas, you’ve got all the classic songs just in time for the holidays. This album contains 13 songs that will lure you into the spirit of the holidays. If I had to nar-row it down to my personal favorite track

on the album it would have to be O Come O Come Emmanuel. Throughout the whole song, melodic guitar riffs are por-trayed and you almost instantly recognize the theme of the song. The drums also have a key part in this song which comes through the different styles of drumming Matt Greiner (drummer of August Burns Red) portrays. Going from a melodic calm feel to a bit more of a rock feel, August Burns Red does an incredible job of developing their own style in this very well-known song.

What’s not to loss when you have your favorite Christmas songs to rock out to! If I were to give August Burns Red new album a full length album review I would incorporate the specific pieces that fit well and what might need a helpful hint. Overall I’d give Sleddin’ Hill a 9.5/10 stars. I’d say that’s a pretty high rating if you ask me! Go support August Burns Red by purchasing their new album or just listen to a song here or there on YouTube. I guarantee that if you’re accustomed to the boring old Christmas songs, these new rockin’ songs will add some spice to your holiday season! Enjoy!

Drumline Drives Band

tHoMaS Horn R e p o r t e r

The pep band is filled with awesome music and always pumps up the crowd. The band has an overall good variety of instruments that helps broaden the sound quality. Everyone in the band has a great time playing and lively presence is well represented. The drumline sticks to the beat and adds amusing rhythms that the crowd enjoys. Redman Svedberg’s favorite part of pep band is the drumline due to being part of the drumline and being able to write vari-ous cadences. “I love writing cadences and seeing the final product of our hard work,” Redman replies. Everyone has a favorite part of the pep band and everyone contributes with their own personality that makes the band just

that more entertaining. Reilly Neilson has been a part of the pep band since he was a freshman. Reilly’s favorite song to play is Groove is in the Heart. This song features awesome trum-pet skills and a drum solo that brings the energy of the band to an all-time high. The reason Reilly enjoys Groove is in the Heart is that “it’s bringing it back to when I played it on the field freshman year.” Playing in the marching band is different from the pep band but both have compo-nents that energize the crowd. The Enumclaw High School pep band brings back old time favorites like, Play That Funky Music, Thriller, Wipeout and many more. All the music is driven by the drumline and the rest of the band supplies the fun exciting melodies that everyone has a good time with. Pregnancy & Family Services

Amanda Palmer’s newest album has everything her fans enjoy about her music with a Top 40 friendly sound. Everything is intact from her previous work, Dark lyrics and playful melody’s, with a new sound barrowing from today’s pop music, heavy synthesizers and drum machine beats.

This album is also extremely innova-tive as far as funding goes. This album is entirely user generated. By now most people know what Kickstarter is, but if not, Kickstarter is a crowed funding web-site for people needing funding for their music, film, stage, and any other creative endeavors. So the entire album was made with the $1,192,793.00 (generated in only 30 days) the fans donated on the site Kickstarter. In a TIME magazine inter-view, Palmer said “We’re looking for a way to connect to the audience”, and with a 15 track album, plus a full color art book, extra songs and covers, and credit for the making of the album, you couldn’t connect any more.

The album itself is good. The singles “Want It Back” and “The Killing Type” are among the most memorable. Want It

Back is similar to Lady Gaga song except much more inspired. “Smile (Picture or It Didn’t Happen)” the album’s first track, is my personal favorite. Very laud deliv-ery and easy to sing along to, and could easily be a radio friendly song. None of these songs have gotten any radio play (other than collage radio or NPR), which is surprising due to the overall sound of the album.

‘Theatre Is Evil’ is an album that can potentially play to everyone’s sensibili-ties.

Every song has a electronic pop sound that’s upbeat (with some exception), which could get the Lady Gaga sort of crowed, and all the creative nuances the independent/hipster music listeners can enjoy.

Couples kissing, students stripping, and gentlemen drinking? “Almost, Maine” is now playing November 29-December 1 and December 6-8 in the EHS auditorium, and you can find all kinds of topics that push the limit of what is allowed in a school play. The new play breaks down the boundaries in more ways than one. “Almost, Maine” is a joint venture between EHS Drama and White River High School, who at the moment does not have a drama club. White River’s drama club was shut down two years ago, so EHS is the only way they can perform in a school play.

Seeing the kids up there, you wouldn’t know they’re from rival schools. In real-

ity, though, the cast is split 50/50 between the two schools.

“The entire play was double cast, and because of all of the scenes everybody had a lead role,” said senior Chilson Schmunk, a backstage technician.

Despite the across-the-bridge rivalry present between EHS and Buckley sport-ing events, the play blended the two schools together without much trouble.

“It was actually pretty great getting to know the kids. I liked working with kids that didn’t have a drama department. For many White River kids, this was their first production.” said Schmunk.

The play is also unprecedented in cost. For any Enumclaw student with a valid ASB, the play is free, and for everybody else, the play is $8

Soundgarden: King AnimalIf you’re in the mood for some powerful

and strong rock, you’ll have to check out Soundgarden’s new album, King Animal. This album displays a variety of different sounds as well as a strong sense of pulse.

This album is quiet the accomplishment due to the fact that this is the first album Soundgarden has released in 16 years. This album is Soundgarden’s sixth studio album and has something to show in their 13 tracks featured in King Animal. The last studio album that they released was titled Down on the Upside which came out in 1996. Having a 16 year hiatus and then re-entering the music scene with a brand new album is an achievement that the band members should be proud of.

The quality that separates Soundgarden from other bands is the unique time sig-natures that they play in. A standard time signature has four beats in a measure with a steady pulse which makes it easy to tap your foot. An easy way to ‘jam’ with friends is to play in standard time signa-ture of four. When Soundgarden ‘jams’ to create a song, they play in unique time signatures of five, seven, or other strange times that is really interesting. Playing in

a unique time signature gives you the abil-ity to truly express your musicianship and allows you to play with a sense of style.

Creating a style in musicianship is important because you want to be different to make an impression on the people who enjoy listening to new music.

One of the really cool traits that Soundgarden has is that the drummer, Matt Cameron, is also the drummer for the band Pearl Jam. Both bands formed around the same time and they both have a similar style in their music. The genre of grunge was initially started in Seattle by the bands Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. It’s pretty cool to think about that we live in the state where famous bands have formed.

To get back on track with King Animal, the lyrics are full with articulation and are full with flavor. Soundgarden still express-es their personality within their music and they have improved their musicianship over the long hiatus of 16 years without a studio album.

With the unique time signatures and powerful tones, Soundgarden makes a statement in their album King Animal that well leave the listener wanting more.

This may be the last edition of The Hornet News. Or at least, that’s what the ancient Mayans would like you to believe. However, with less than a month to go until the supposed end of the world, NASA says we don’t actually have anything to worry about.Earlier this month, NASA posted on their official website a list of frequently asked questions, most pertaining to why the date projected by ancient Mayans, predicting the demise of our planet on Dec. 21, 2012, is entirely false. Their answers explained that the Earth has been getting along fine for 4 billion years, and there isn’t any scientific evidence to suggest it will abruptly end a few days from now.The Mayan calendar phenomenon began in 1966, American anthropologist and archaeolo-gist Michael D. Coe wrote a theory explaining the apocalyptic notion behind the “zero date” on the Mayan Long Count calendar. Mayan gods had created three failed worlds prior to our successful planet, he wrote, including that the world undergoes a drastic reincarnation every 5125 years, placing the predicted date at exactly Dec. 21, 2012. NASA isn’t quite as pessimistic as Dr. Coe, suggesting that “just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after Dec 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on Dec 21, 2012… Just as your calendar begins again on Jan 1 – another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.”NASA’s site goes on to explain that no reputable scientific organization, them-selves included, have predicted anything harmful occurring on that specific date. They also suggest that not even a chance planetary alignment could cause any harm; major alignments of the planets have already occurred three times in the past 50 years with no effect.Believers of this apocalyptic phenomenon are not so quick to dismiss the idea, however. A website has cropped up devoted to the notion that the world will, in fact, end on the indicated date, confirmed by supposedly irrefutable information, celebrity endorsements, and advertisements hawking apocalypse survival kits at discount prices. NASA concedes only that Dec 21 will herald a new winter solstice, but nothing more. Regardless, the fate of our planet—and more importantly, this newspaper—will still very much be up for debate until the day itself.

What would you do if Friday was last day on Earth?“I don’t believe it’s going to hap-pen because if it was it would have already happened because of the leap year,” said junior Mackenna VanRuff.

“Lock our doors and watch zombie movies all day,” is what Junior Jessi Williams is doing.

Junior Dylan

Hamel said “I’m going up

to Crystal one last time,”

There are many theories to what will happen on Friday ranging from an alien invasion to a massive meteor impacting with the Earth. Here are the top five most popular theories.

5. Catastrophic planetary alignment. People claim that Saturn and Jupiter will align, causing gravitational anomalies powerful enough to affect the Sun. the only problem with that theory is it already happened on December third.

4. Super Nova. A press release by the American Astronomical Society stated that star T Pyxidis might be due to become a super nova. It is “close” enough to Earth that if it were to happen it would send deadly

Gamma rays towards earth killing everything in its path.

3. Magnetic pole reversal. The theory is that a massive solar flare will hit earth weakening our already weak magnetic field and flipping the poles releasing enough energy equal to 100 billion

atomic bombs.

2. Planet X. There are theories that say that there is a planet orbiting in our solar system but has yet to be identified. If it’s true it is on a crash course with earth and on Friday it will

collide with Earth destroying both planets.

1. Asteroid Collision. This is one of the most popular beliefs. It is said that there could be an asteroid hurtling towards earth. If there is an impact the Earth could either be destroyed immediately. If the asteroid is smaller it will throw up enough dust in the Earth’s atmosphere to start a new Ice Age.

Deep in the folds of the Sumner Industrial district, in the back corner of a garage, a set list is being perfected. Every single measure with each techni-cality, rehearsed a thousand times with a thousand yet to come. More than fingers count; a member of the band would stop playing and maybe hold up their hand and shout, trying to catch the others attention for he was not satisfied with the product of their instruments. A four piece pop-punk/rock band with members from all over Washington State, determined to play their licks for the masses. Shoreline Drive, being an established and widely respected group of musicians since 2010, have traveled a far ways since their slightly less polished begin-ning. Recently writing new material as well as replacing a guitarist and going on a West Coast Tour this past summer seemed to give them the extra push they needed. In 2011, they released a full six song EP, with everything from soft ballads and soaring melodic choruses filled out with warm, crunchy guitars to hard-hitting, appealing hooks complimented by flowing leads. Not to mention their backbone of a mam-moth with driving bass lines and powerful rhythms with much more exciting fills. Overall, it’s an enjoyable album that won’t leave your ear for catchy tunes down. They also just released a new single, Icelander. This really shows off the new direction of the band’s songwriting capabilities fea-turing tasty riffs and a structure that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Having played shows far and wide, Shoreline Drive has always been more concerned

about the fans rather than less valuable endeav-ors and its far more than immi-nent when they get on stage. The performance that the audience would see isn’t a hoax or planned, it’s just them, doing nothing else but playing their music and having a good time. Founded by rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Devin Damitio and drummer Skylar Faucet, later joined by Levi Goode on bass and later on Jordan Obaya on lead guitar, they embody Shoreline Drive. Always working to further their progress as band and musicians; already they have made an impact on fans as well as local music. In the holiday spirit they are co-head-lining a show coming up on December 15th. The renowned classy “A Classic Christmas: feat. The Classic Crime” at the Showbox Market in Seattle. Other featur-ing acts include Keeping Secrets, Matt Bacnis, and Hallstorm. Continually this is a remember able concert with good sup-porting local bands and giddy Christmas spirit that could either make you want to throw up, make you want to sing along with cheesy Christmas carols, or maybe even find some mistletoe, all depending on who you are. Either way, it’s always a remember able night.

Macklemore’s new album, The Heist, has an immense amount of variety throughout and expresses powerful lyrics. Behind all of his lyrics, a different symbol comes across and is portrayed by what he truly believes in. His feelings about controversial subjects are brought up, but use a candid lyrical view from start to finish. The Heist features 18 tracks that depict Macklemore’s articulation, style, and emotions.

Growing up in Seattle, Macklemore went to Garfield and Edward Murrow High School. After high school, he attend-ed Evergreen State College, earning him-self a bachelor’s degree. Soon after he graduated from Evergreen, Macklemore began to struggle with drug addiction. Throughout his life, drugs have had an impact on him and at a point in his life oxycontin controlled his actions.

Spiraling down into a state of fear, Macklemore thought all hope was gone. Getting involved with music has led him in the right direction of staying sober. In 2008 he cleaned himself up and started making music again.

Without the help from Ryan Lewis, Macklemore won’t have the success he has today. Ryan Lewis produces the music and provides the beats/rhythms for Macklemore. Macklemore features several different musicians that play the trumpet, piano, violin, and other instru-ments along the way. Macklemore also features different singers throughout his

new album, The Heist, and it allows dif-ferent variations on a specific song that makes the listener want to keep listening.

The lyrics are so powerful and come straight from Macklemore’s true feelings about life. The hard times that Macklemore has gone through are expressed in his songs and you can tell by the way he artic-ulates his words that his emotions come across in every song. Some rap artists just talk really fast and you can’t quite under-stand what they’re saying. Macklemore on the other side expresses his lyrics in a controllable, flowing way that helps the listener understand and comprehend what he is saying.

An award needs to be given to Macklemore for his hard work and dedica-tion towards his new album. He needs to be recognized for his bona fide talent. Go support Macklemore by buying his new album and you will not be disappointed.

Lots of work still needed for Mariners

HanS Harjo

R e p o r t e rThere has been a lot of talk involving the Seattle Mariners and some of baseball’s well known free-agent names.Just about every outfielder available has talked to the Seattle’s front office at some point this post season. That includes Josh Hamilton, the biggest bat on the free-agent market of the 2012-2013 offseason.

Adding Hamilton would be a great start, buts that’s about all that it would be…The job that needs to be done in Seattle is far more extensive than simply picking up one strong bat and pushing it into the middle of the lineup.

Kyle Seager and Justin Smoak are the only other bats that opposing pitchers don’t want to face, and Smoak has been 100% killing it since arriving in Seattle.Even if the Mariners were to sign Josh

Hamilton, there would still be some seri-ous work to do.Like also signing center fielder and lead-off master Michael Bourn would be a good idea, especially if our owners are actually gonna let payroll climb above about $90 million.

The Mariners also have a ton of new pitching talent, both on their roster and in their minor league system that they could use as bait to bring in another bat.

Any combination of names like Taijuan Walker, Nick Franklin and Mike Zunino is sure to lure in to the Mariners some sort of big name player.

Whether they try and trade for another big name player or sign a few through as a free agent, or they are serious about bringing in Hamilton, they are going to need to do more if they hope to compete as early as 2013.

Girls Wrestling off to another good start

Danielle corMier

R e p o r t e r

EHS Girls wrestling has started off on the right foot with 8 students joining the team. Some are returning and have been wrestling since their freshman year, for some this is only their first year on the mat, and for others it is only their fresh-man year. Jade Patterson, a senior, is a returning wrestler and is currently ranked third in state at 170 lbs. Danielle Cormier, a junior this year is ranked 2nd in state at 145 lbs. along with KC Moulden who is also ranked 2nd at heavy weight.

For Raquel Cormier this is her returning year as a sophomore. Ally Smith is also a sophomore, but wrestling is all new to her. Chantal Capps and Kristen Green are both returning for their second year.

Freshmen play a great role in the growth

of every sport. Without a new class every year EHS would never grow and become stronger. Thanks to Jaelen Hobert, a fresh-man this year, girls wrestling has gained a potential four time state champion.

December 1st was the first tournament of the year. It was at Yelm High school and was a girls only tournament. Capps, Green, and Smith ended up not placing that day but wrestled every match to their best ability. Raquel finished 4th, and Hobert finished 3rd. EHS put two girls in the finals that night; Moulden and Danielle. Moulden came out with a successful 2nd, and Danielle went home with the first place title.

Never giving up, every girl wrestled each match till either a pin occurred or three rounds were up. Going hard till the very end is a skill every wrestler should have.

Powder puff football raises money

Powder-puff football was a huge suc-cess raising around $900 dollars for the senior class. The event was fun and tiring but the girls look forward to participating in powder-puff football again. “Absolutely, because it was super cool to play under the lights and dominate the juniors,” says Julia Myers about the game and whether she would play again. The game score was 19-0 with the seniors winning over the juniors. The senior girls were more than excited about winning against the underclassmen. What was the best part about playing powder puff? “Being able to wear mouth guards and wearing the boys’ jerseys like

boys football,” Missy Sanders said. The game had some funny moments too, like Jenn Hogan pointed out, “see-ing Tony and Adam come in cheerleading outfits.” All in all, the game provided an enjoy-able fundraiser that revived an old tradi-tion and left participants with fun-filled memories.

Boys Basketball on a winning streak

lucaS cHang

R e p o r t e rBoys’ basketball has gotten off to

a good start with a record of 3-2. The boys’ basketball team is on a winning streak right now and that just might be enough motivation to keep it going. The first game was against Spanaway Lakes and it was a very close game with the Enumclaw up by 6 points. Eventually the boys lost by 5 points.

Then there was the rivalry between the White River Hornets and the Enumclaw Hornets. The entire game was full of screaming White River fans and outra-geous Enumclaw fans. When the players weren’t playing on the court, the fans were pumping each other up while try-ing to out-yell the White River fans. With

the second half underway the Enumclaw Hornets were fighting hard but the White River Hornets were fighting just as hard. It came down to the last seconds of the game. White River was up by 2 points and Enumclaw failed to regain the ball in the closing seconds, Enumclaw fell to White River 42-44.

After the loss to White River, Enumclaw went on to win the next three games. Enumclaw won 75-70 against Inglemoor. In the games against Tumwater and Tyee Enumclaw won both by more than a twenty point margin.

Enumclaw Played Kingston High School on Saturday. Enumclaw won by two points putting their record at four wins and two losses for the season.

You could think of Julia Myers as the female version of Marshawn Lynch, ‘beast’. Averaging 15 points, and 8 rebounds per game, this senior captain is having a solid start to the season.

When asked how she has improved throughout her high school career, Julia responded, “we as athletes never stop improving, and although I feel like I’ve come a long way, I still have a lot of work to do.” “First thing’s first, win league, and make it to state, but that won’t happen with-out my family, team, and coaches,” Julia stated. “Without my team I’d be nothing. We aren’t just a basketball team, we’re a family.”

She’s also a letterman in volleyball, and works out during the off-season to stay in shape, as well as playing on an AAU basketball team. The stellar athlete also played a great game as quarterback for the seniors versus juniors powder puff football game.

In a recent interview with teammate Nadine Huff, she stated, “Julia is really enthusiastic and gets us pumped up!” Julia Myers is a leader, a team player, and sets a good example no matter the situ-ation. Myers plans to go to college on an athletic scholarship. The whereabouts of her college career are still pending. Though she has been offered various scholarships, she still needs time to decide where she wants to attend college.

December December Seahawks set franchise record at 58 points

colBy MeSke-tHoMPSon

R e p o r t e rThe last couple weeks there has been

a significant change in the number of Seahawks fans, could be the fact that they are actually winning and looking like a very strong team late in the season.

On Sunday December, ninth the Seahawks took the field in what looked like would be a tough divisional match-up, in week 1 this year the Seahawks dropped a heart breaker to the Cardinals, this game would have a way different out-come in the end.

The game its self-got to a comical point after the Cardinals punt returner fumbled the punt and it went right into the Seahawks players hands in the end zone for another Seahawks touchdown, at the point in the game you knew it would be smooth sailing, Cardinals starting quarterback John Skelton had a less then great day throwing 4 interceptions to the boys in blue. “It was one of the best and funniest games I have ever seen” said Beau Brock.

The final score really didn’t show

how close the game was……… 58-0, so that previous statement was totally false the game was never close the 58 points the hawks scored was a new franchise record, the Seahawks also caused 8 turn-overs; 4 interceptions and 4 fumbles. The Seahawks also rushed for 284 yards, Beast Mode (Marshawn Lynch) also rushed for 3 touchdowns of his own; the Seahawks had to rushers for over 100 yards Marshawn Lynch and rookie out of Utah State Robert Turbin.

As it stands right for the Seahawks they are in the fifth seed for the playoffs. Two more wins should basically give the ‘hawks a for sure in for the playoffs, but they aren’t just seeking a playoff berth they are also seeking a division title “it’s great that we’re already considered in but our team goal was a division title, that’s what we’re playing for now” said coach Pete Carroll, a game and a half out and three games left the Seahawks are mak-ing a push for their 2nd division title in three years. Should be an interesting fin-ish to an already good year for the Seattle Seahawks.

Wrestling wins first matchgarrett roe

R e p o r t e rThe seats were filled this last

Wednesday at Bonney Lake High School. For thought to be one of the tougher matches for Enumclaw. But Enumclaw dominated the mat on their own turf. Starting off the lead was a forfeit at 195 pounds. Putting Enumclaw in the lead 6-0. That was just the starting point for the Hornets. Soon after Enumclaw started to widen the lead only losing a few matches. But only to tough opponents. Enumclaw’s own Ryan Anderson had this

to say “It was a great match and I love to go out there and wrestle.”

Coaches from both sides were yelling out for each map supporting there wres-tler as best they could. As a hornet joining the crowd Beau Brock was one of the many cheering said “ I was glad I could come to the match and watch my friends wrestle and win too.” Needless to say Enumclaw had a great match at Bonney Lake and won 46-12. This is a great start to a great season and the wrestlers con-tinue to make Enumclaw proud.
