MEMBRINE Project Idea
4
Title: Recovery of resources from industrial wastewater: reclaimed water, valuable compounds and energy. Main concept: Applying membrane technologies for wastewater reuse and resource recovery, including brines. Special focus on cooling processes and cleaning recovery reagents. Main objective: To proof that specific membrane separation processes applied to wastewaters result in a 20% of water use reduction by applying closed loop and reuse procedures in different sectors. Target industrial sectors: Chemical, minerals & ceramics. SPIRE key component: Waste2Resource SPIRE key action: KA 4.2: Technologies for separation, extraction, sorting and harvesting of gaseous, liquids and solid waste streams SPIRE H2020 Topic: SPIRE-01-2016 Water MGT systems in process industries
WWW.SPIRE2030.EU 5
Combining different membrane separation processes for water recovery, up to
pilot plant:
- An-MBR for wastewater treatment: water reuse and energy production.
- NF for CIP solutions and ion Exchange spent brines: recovery of reagents.
- EDM and EDBM: water production, salt recovery and acids and bases
recovery.
- FO hybrid systems.
Additional activities:
- Decision Suport Systems for water reuse in industries.
- ICT for intelligent water treatment and reuse.
- Water footprint determination and Life Cycle Cost of new processes.
- Process design for preventing human health risks by microbiological
control of reused water.
- Corrosion prevention for new water reuse processes acting on the water or
on the conducting materials.

MEMBRINE EXPECTED IMPACT
6
MEMBRINE novel membrane processes for
water reuse will result in:
• Reduction of at least 20% in water use
compared to the current practice in the
sector.
• Minimising the Water Footprint, employing
less water intensive or waterless
technologies and increasing recycling.
• Energy or raw materials recovery depending
on the membrane technology.

LOOKING FOR PARTNERS
7
Looking for industrial partners providing applications in the following sectors:
- chemical, minerals, ceramics and other industries generating brine water.
EURECAT has contacts with technology providers (mainly SME’s) to
complete the consortium.
Open to consider merging with other proposals to increase the Project scope.
