Publisher NHS England
Summary NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has today (Tuesday) announced a £130m investment to kickstart the upgrade of radiotherapy equipment and transform cancer treatment across England. Summary This report calls for a review of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines on cochlear implants as new research shows that the UK has the most restrictive guidelines in Western Europe. It also shows that people with serious hearing loss often cost the NHS and other care services more by being denied an implant because of the greater risks of suffering from dementia and mental health problems when hearing loss is not addressed.

Publisher King's Fund
Summary Traditionally, the cost object in health care has been either a service line (e.g. orthopaedics) or a clinical intervention (e.g. hip replacement). In the mid-2000s, the Department of Health recommended that in the future the patient should be the cost object, to enable a better analysis of cost drivers in health care, resulting in PLICSs. Monitor proposes that PLICS data will now form the basis for mandatory prices for health-care services across all care settings. This study aimed to explore the current use of PLICSs and the potential for future use of PLICSs in

Publisher King's Fund
Summary This report, commissioned by the US Government, evaluates the effectiveness of an intervention designed to prevent falls in the elderly, with a particular focus on fall-related injuries and on health care costs. The researchers concluded that the intervention did not have a substantial effect on health care costs. Although they did not find evidence that the intervention reduced A&E visits for fall-related injuries, they cautioned that the study was underpowered for this outcome and that a clinically meaningful effect could have gone undetected.

Publisher King's Fund
Summary This briefing warns that the NHS can no longer find enough bed space to move patients through hospitals quickly and meet key A&E targets – and that its practice of counting patients at midnight means that the true scale of the squeeze is being missed. It estimates that 5.5 per cent of beds need to be free for cleaning and preparation if patients are to be moved through quickly enough to meet the commitment to admit or transfer emergency patients within four hours.

Summary Traditionally clinical practice in the NHS has considered that it is up to doctors to decide what risks to communicate to patients. Recent case law has changed and doctors are now obliged to ensure that patients are aware of any and all risks that an individual patient might consider significant. This guidance is aimed at doctors and surgeons to help them understand this shift in the law, as well as giving them the tools to assist in improving their practice.

Publisher King's Fund
Summary This report reviews research evidence on the elements of healthcare for people with dementia, and, using economic modelling, suggests how it should be improved and made more efficient. It argues that current dementia healthcare services are over-specialised, and that a rebalancing is required with a more prominent role for primary and community care which could increase capacity, limit the increased costs associated with scaling up coverage of care, and, coupled with the introduction of care pathways and case management, improve the coordination and integration of care.
