Good research relies on surveying a representative sample of the community you want to research, with weighting of the respondents’ survey data as necessary to ensure and accurate demographic match to that community. Being able to control the sampling process is vital.

You can apply 21 demographic criteria across all questions to build profiles of respondents to a question.






Weighting System

Most research companies use weights in any serious survey they undertake.

Horizon uses rim-weighting. This is an iterative process that scales data on multiple criteria to match the targets required, converging to the set of respondent weights that match the sample to the population with the least impact on sampling error. Generally the targets are demographics, but it is also possible to use behaviour, such as voting in a previous election, where the statistics to match are clearly and independently identifiable. Basically each person is assigned a weight for each of the selected variables being used for the survey (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, personal income, employment status, party vote at the last general election and so on) and these are multiplied to give that person’s response a single, overall weight.






For Horizon’s panels, data from the most recent census is used for target. Weighting can be on up to six criteria at one time, ensuring that sample over-representation by people of a particular age group or regional location, for example, cannot bias the final results.

Quantitative or qualitative – or a mix of bothOpen-ended questions can be included in surveys and responses analysed to give immediate insight into what drives quantitative results, or used to illustrate respondent’s points of view. Depending on the topic and the strength of views held by the respondents, we would often see more than 500,000 words per survey.
