AMAN WAS FOUNDED IN 1988 WITH THE VISION OFBUILDING A COLLECTION OF INTIMATE RETREATSWITH THE UNASSUMING, WARM HOSPITALITYOF A GRACIOUS PRIVATE RESIDENCE. THE FIRST,AMANPURI IN PHUKET, THAILAND (ALSO FEATUREDIN THIS ISSUE), INTRODUCED THE CONCEPT, AND

SINCE THEN, AMAN HAS GROWN TO ENCOMPASS30 HOTELS AND RESORTS.

Aman Resorts never set out to be the biggest. They prefer to focuson unrivalled quality and to offer an intimate experience withoutlimitations. This boutique mind-set, paired with a lust for farawaycultures and a deep appreciation of the creative and elegant, hasearned this small collection a sophisticated niche and loyal following. The Aman experience is mystical and most fully expressed in theirnely tuned home-away-from-home experience, and this is what Ilove about them!

Perched on the hilltop of Agios Panteleimonas, which means Theall-merciful saint, Amanzoe commands extraordinary views of theAegean Sea and undulating hillsides cloaked in olive groves. Theresort is the ideal base from which to explore this pituresque region, full of ancient sites and charming villages.

Comprising a 38-suite resort, spa and a number of exclusive villas,Amanzoe is situated on a hilltop in Greece on the east coast of thePeloponnese, overlooking the island of Spetses, and draws its namefrom the Sanskrit-derived word for peace and the Greek word for life.

A favourite among artists, politicians, businessmen and celebrities, the resort hasviews of crystal clear blue waters and stunningpanoramas from almost every corner of theproperty.

The moment I set foot in the resort, Imembraced by whites and blues, and Greecessea-faring heritage is highlighted by a ship halfsunken out in the sea.

I enter my suite on the ground floor withprivate pool and deck and those same whitesand blues, capturing that holiday feel. I discovermirrors placed on walls for clever reflections

of light and space and the set-up of the bath-top as a separation of the bedroom to thebathroom is another great touch. I love theNikki Beach style and I just want to jump intomy bathing suit and jump into the pool!

THE RESIDENCEWith a seating capacity of 1,000, the Residenceis a magnicent garden full of ancient olive treesand tamarisks right up to the edge of the sea. TheMediterranean architecture, nature, colours and thesimplicity blend with the authenticity of the landscape.

THE PRIVEThis is an ideal area for corporate dinners for smallergroups of 100, while at the same time providing directaccess to the Island Club. The large veranda, witha superb view of the sea, creates a magical scene ofunparalleled beauty.

    THE C-LOUNGE

This is the space to elegantly enjoy brunch, a light mealor a coffee. It is now the daily destination for those wholove simplicity and quality. The blend of young peoplewho love nature and stylish foreign visitors in thischic yet casual place is what makes C-Lounge not justanother caf.

The unique and original dcor is in harmony with theminimalist furniture and Philippe Starck lighting, with rareethnic items from exotic locations in Africa, Bali, Indiaand Sri Lanka. The space exudes a wonderful feeling ofmystery.

    THE GALLERY

With room enough for 400 guests, the Gallery is theideal place for an unforgettable wedding. Its astonishingsea views escalate in levels and create a particularlyhospitable and cosy atmosphere. The white of the tinychurch of St Dionysios, perched atop the rock, against

the blue sea is picture postcard perfect!

I am already thinking about which birthday orcelebration I can invite all my friends to in this gloriouspart of Greece. Whatever the occasion, Island Club andits neighbouring hostelries will make it extra special andso do many parts of this beautiful country of Greece, each with its own style, encompassing the traditional,

    trendy and elegant.

THE PRIVATE HOUSEOn the wooden deck beside the oblong zen pool, as well as in theush garden with a view of the innite blue, I enjoy my afternoon lyingon the lounger, watching shing boats passing by on their way home.

nterrupted only by a few seagulls soaring above, I embrace this totallyelaxing scenery and imagine how amazing it must be to receive yourriends here for an unforgettable evening. The huge speakers indicatehat dancing must be another joy, with no closing time to stop you.

Thinking about music, I step into the villas bedroom where I nd theCD player and the choice of early drinks or late shoes CDs madey Kostantinos Panas and Lia Mansola to enjoy pleasant and relaxing

moments before I am picked up for dinner at Island Club Restaurant. The next day around 6am, I open my eyes and gaze from the bed toee the sun rise. I cant help but jump out of bed to catch the moment

with my camera just to nd myself a few minutes later back in the warmheets and comfort of the bed with a view.

have a healthy, colourful breakfast with plenty of fresh fruit, tastytrawberries and delicious freshly squeezed orange juice accompaniedy cereal and Greek yoghurt. I enjoy blue waters, and watch the parade

    of animals passing.

irst I get to see about twenty seagulls taking their morning bath withoud squawks as if t heyre telling each other how much theyre enjoyingt. Then a little brown and white cat is c urious to come into my bedroomut, as she sees me, decides to hide behind a door, which is safer than

alling into the Jacuzzi which is sunken in the oor! Lastly, two dogs onheir way to new adventures pass by without even taking notice of me.can see they have collars, so they must be from the neighbourhood.

Here at the I sland villa, holding professional meetings and conferences aswell as private receptions is the fabulous idea of t he owners, the Panasamily. They provide the latest sound and image equipment contributing tohe success of an exceptional business meeting with a one-of-a-kind air.

ZONARS, ATHENSZonars opened in 1939, and 75 years later, its history is stimuch alive. Spyros and Chrysanthos Panas reopened the histolounge restaurant with the mission to promote the Athens Rphilosophy. Many famed personalities have visited, including AQuinn, Sophia Loren, Melina Mercouri and Odysseas Elytfamous Greek writer.

Although glamorous (its just around the corner from Hermes& Gabbana, beautiful jewellery stores and the iconic Hotel GBretagne), Zonars respects its heritage, resembling a hotel lobbexceptional cuisine and impeccable service.

You may sit outside to have your coffee and watch people stby to City Link where you can nd another great place to stoenjoy your lunch. City Bistro is considered the best in Athens, cosiness and simplicity bring to mind such eateries in France.

Bar de Theatre, just adjacent to it, has an artistic atmosphere

in the morning, it operates as an espresso bar; in the afterpeople can enjoy aperitivo cocktails after work; while in the eit transforms into a trendy street bar that welcomes actopassers-by for after-theatre drinks.

n never get enough of visiting Hagia Soa, Topkap and several otherdmarks again and again. I can pick up a Muzekart from Conradscierge to skip the queues.

vigating the Byzantine and Ottoman sights into Sultanahmet can bellenging, so when I need a break I stop at a peaceful spot for a modestch in the teahouse in the c ourtyard of the Caferaga M adrasa, where

graphy, marbling and other traditional arts are taught.

fc in Istanbul can be intense but there is a great solution to it.ape to the Prince Islands, a cluster of car-free islands in the SeaMarmara. The prettiest island is the biggest, Bykada, its woodenas painted in pastel colours. Its about 105 minutes by ferry frombatadocks, between Dolmabahe Palace and Istanbul Modern. IDOerates a faster catamaran service during summer months. I am soare that on sunny summer weekends the ferries are rammed, so aimthe earliest boat during the week.

As you arrive at Shangri-La Hotel, Paris, its elegant faade brings tomind its legacy as a former royal abode. Attentive staff and a pleasantlydiscreet check-in ensure that you receive impeccable treatment rightfrom the start.

Richard Martinet directed the architectural renovations and Pierre-Yves Rochon designed the interior style, at times empire, at timesluxury minimalist, and at times a stunning mix of both.

Apart from the Signature Suites, all rooms and suites are decorated inshades of blue, white and ecru, in keeping with both European empireand Asian aesthetics. Interiors offer a pleasing harmony of texturesand colours, from silk-threaded wallpaper, textured wall panels andrefined crystal hardware on custom-made furnishings.

treasure after my most enjoyable stay there inApril.

Phuket Islands most exclusive, intimate resortis just 15 minutes over a private bay fromPhukets International Airport on the quiet,

elatively undeveloped north-western coastline. The short drive isbeautiful introduction to the real Phuket, winding through small

illages, jungle and beaches before I arrive at the resorts discreetntrance, hidden by towering ancient hardwoods.

Trisaras owners are also the managers and t he driving force behind alldesign decisions, passionate about service, food and attention to detail, something too often overlooked in todays world.

The gently sloping contours of the site have been developed to allowall villas at Trisara to embrace wide ocean views, sunsets and the coolingsea breeze. As I walk down a few steps to my pool villas entranceescorted by a staff member facilitating the check-in inside the villa, Idiscover the green abundant nature and the blue ocean in front of mefrom a higher elevation which gives me the sensation of being on topof the world.

    MRESTORATION

Designed to signicantly enhance the facilities and services of this award-winning hotel, the historic heart of the property has recently beenrestored to its original splendour. The project saw a signicant roomreconguration, with the creation of new spacious suites, including aGrand Royal Suite in the Authors Wing and twelve suites with balconiesin the Garden Wing which I have the immense pleasure to visit in thecompany of Etienne de Villiers, the hotels director of public relations.

The six-bedroom, 600-square-metre Grand Royal Suite is Bangkoksgrandest presidential suite and occupies the entire rst oor of therenowned Authors Wing, which was the original Oriental Hotel.

The suite has private elevator access and incorporates the one-bedroom, 315-square-metre Royal Suite and the adjoining 165-square-metre Ambassador Suite with two bedrooms, as well as three furtherseparate guest rooms.

ndarin Oriental, Bangkok deservedly has an internationalutation for splendid service, style and grace, and this is

bued throughout its eight restaurants. The hotels privatekwood shuttle boats provide daily access to the worldous Thai Cooking School, the hotels Thai restaurant and the

ard-winning Oriental Spa and Health Centre across the river.

hen I arrive in Bangkok, my rst dinner is at t he Riverside terrace ofRim Naam restaurant which offers a delicious choice of traditional

ai dishes. And how they spoil me! From st eamed prawns with freshad and chilli lime sauce wrapped in r ice noodles to deep-fried herbbmeat and minced chicken to herb pomelo salad with grilled blueer prawn to steamed snow sh with black pepper and garlic sauce,h and every dish is a pure delight. The dessert of Rambutan sorbet, ter chestnut rubies in chilled coconut milk and Royal Thai petit fours a taste sensation t for a king or queen.

AMERICAN JIM THOMPSONLOVED THAILAND, AND HISFORMER HOME IN THE CAPITALIS A MONUMENT TO THECOUNTRY AND ITS CULTURE.

Thompson was condent that with peace

restored and the expansion of air travel, there would be a signicant increase in leisuretravel to the Far East, and these travellerswould need acceptable accommodation.

Few hotels in Bangkok then could beconsidered of international standard. Onlyone had an ideal location, the old Oriental, aformer palace overlooking the Chao PhrayaRiver that owed through the capital. It was a meeting place for travellers anda social centre for the foreign community.Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward andSomerset Maugham were just a few of itsfamous patrons. Excited by the prospectsit presented, Thompson became activelyinvolved in the reorganisation of theOriental Hotel.

The hand weaving of silk, a long-neglectedcottage industry, captured Thompsonsattention, and he devoted himself to reviving

    the craft.

With his natural air for design and colour, and driven by his single-minded dedication,Thompson soon gained worldwiderecognition for his success in rebuilding theindustry, generating international demandfor Thai silk and contributing to the growthof the silk industry.

He gained further renown through theconstruction of his house combining six

teak buildings, which represented the bestin traditional Thai architecture. Most of thehouses were at least two centuries old andwere easily dismantled and brought to thepresent site, some from as far as the oldcapital of Ayudhya.

The house and the art collection soobecame such a point of interest that hdecided to open his home to the pubwith proceeds donated to Thai charitieand projects directed at the preservation Thailands rich cultural heritage.

On March 26th 1967, just eight yeaafter he moved into his home, Thompsodisappeared while on a visit to the CameroHighlands in Malaysia. Not a single val

clue has turned up in the ensuing years ato what might have happened to him. Hfamous Thai house, however, remains lasting reminder of his creative ability and hdeep love of Thailand.

In his quest for authenticity, Thompsonadhered to the customs of the early buildersin most respects. The houses were elevateda full story above the ground, a practicalYhai precaution to avoid ooding during

the rainy season. The roof tiles were redin Ayudhya, employing a design commoncenturies ago but rarely used today. The red

paint on the outside walls is a preservativeoften found on many old Thai buildings. The chandeliers were a concession tomodern convenience, but even theybelong to a past era, having come from18th and 19th century Bangkok palaces.

All the traditional rituals were followed duringconstruction of the house, and on a springday in 1959, decreed as being auspiciousby astrologers, Thompson moved in.

In 1976, the Thai Court-appointeadministrator for the property of JiThompson received permission from thgovernment ministries of the Kingdom Thailand to legally establish the James H.WThompson Foundation.

By virtue of its presence and the dictates oits charter, the foundation is committed t

the preservation of Thailands rich artistic ancultural heritage. The foundation suppora wide variety of research, publication anseminar projects in furtherance of this aim.

There are so many wonders to see in theThai capital Bangkok, but Jim ThompsonHouse is a special tourist attraction with anintriguing history.

James Harrison Wilson Thompson wasborn in Greenville, Delaware, USA in 1906.He attended public schools in Wilmington,

went on to boarding school at St. Paulsand attended Princeton University from1924 to 1928. Although Thompson had akeen interest in art, he chose to become anarchitect and went on to study architectureat the University of Pennsylvania. He was apracticing architect in New York City until1940.

With the escalation of the war in Europein the early 1940s, Thompson volunteered

for the United States Army, an importantturning point in his life. He was assignedto t he Ofce of S trategic Ser vices (OSS),forerunner of the Central IntelligenceAgency (CIA), a move that offered him anopportunity to see more of the world. Heworked with French forces in North Africaand assignments also took him to Italy,France and Asia.

To prepare for his mission, Thompsonundertook rigorous training in jungle survivaland completed the course successfully. However, the war ended abruptly asThompson and the other OSS men wereen route to Bangkok. A few weeks later, heassumed the duties of OSS station chief. In late 1946, he received orders to return to

the States to receive his military discharge.

By this time, Thompson had developed afondness for the country and its peopleand began to seriously contemplate settlingdown and going into business in Thailand. Heforesaw a promising future for the countryand wanted to be a part of this process. He decided that upon leaving the service,he would return and take up residence inThailand permanently.
