From Horizon 2020 to Horizon EuropeStarting in 2021, Horizon 2020 develops into EU’s next step on its journey towards a more innovative future: Horizon Europe. With a total budget of €100 billion, 30% bigger than Horizon 2020, this program aims to take the lessons learned in Horizon 2020 and step up the focus on research and innovation, bette-ring the impact of the EU’s R&D investments. A major focus is cli-mate change (covering 35% of the budget) and attaining the sus-tainable development goals, while at the same time boosting the EU’s competitiveness and growth. It encompasses three pillars:

1. Open science (€25,8 billion), promoting frontier research, training of researchers and inter-connected research infra-structures

2. Global challenges and industrial competitiveness (€52,7 bil-lion), boosting key technologies and solutions in the areas of health; inclusive and secure society; digital and industry; climate, energy and mobility; and food and natural resources

3. Open innovation (€13,5 billion), supporting innovations and connecting key actors (research, education and business) to nurture innovation
