During the week of February 16th through the 20
th, Horace
Mann 7th graders participated in the YMCA Community
Partnership Campaign through a classroom coin-drive. Together, our students raised $978.77. We held a competition between Team 7-1 and 7-2 to see who could raise the most money. The winning team would receive a rock-climbing adventure at the Woodson YMCA. Horace Mann is proud to acknowledge the extraordinary generosity of both teams, however, 7-1 did win the competition. The money raised during the annual event will help ease the cost of membership and/or participation in sport/camping programs through student scholarships. In addition, all the money raised by Horace Mann families will be rewarded back to our students. Awesome job 7
th graders!

The Horace Mann wrestling team had a very successful season! Every member on the
team had at least one win. One highlight was taking 2nd place in the Wausau West
Tournament. That is the best we have ever placed in school history. We had a
number of athletes take first place in tournaments this season. Every year we are
growing in numbers and ability! Way to go Eagles!

Ortho Molecular Products Field Trip
Is your health important to you? Have you ever wondered how multivitamins
were made? These questions, as well as others, were answered when several 8th
graders toured Ortho Molecular Products, Inc. in Stevens Point. On Wednesday,
February 11th, students toured the facility and were given a behind-the-scenes view of
the work that happens to provide dietary supplements to the public. Safe and
controlled products are the focus at Ortho Molecular Products(OMP).
Many students on the field trip were impressed with the scientific work being
completed at OMP. In one area, materials were tested using fire to determine the
elements they are made of. The flame of the fire would change color depending on the
elements found in the material.
After reflecting on the field trip, Nou Soua Chang commented that it was most
interesting “how much perfection OMP wants in their items.” Many students felt this
line of work was important. Ceanna Potter stated that OMP was important because
“they create a lot of pills that people need to keep themselves healthy.” Lichear Vue
mentioned that OMP would be a good place to work because “the feeling of being
there is like a family and they have all types of interesting jobs you might like.” Many
students noted that the workers and staff created a positive atmosphere and were
thankful to those who led and organized the tour. A special thanks goes to Jackson
Sann’s mother, Melissa Jurgensmier, who coordinated the tour at OMP.

participating schools included: D.C. Everest Junior High & Middle Schools, John Muir, Mara-
thon, Prairie River-Merrill, Mosinee, P.J. Jacobs-Point & Wisconsin Rapids Middle

see the stands filled with fans cheering our girls on!

Student Learning, Whatever it Takes!
Physical Education News
The image above has gained a lot of popularity recently in educational circles, includ-ing Horace Mann. A growing amount of research is proving that exercise is not only great for your body, but it helps your brain first. Exercise helps bring fresh oxygen and blood to the brain, something it needs to function properly. In many of our classes, teachers are using movement to not only give our student’s brains a break and chance to process what they are learning, but they are also incorporating learning into their movement. When students are moving while they are learning, whether they are reading while riding a desk cycle or working on their math facts as they perform agility movements through an agility ladder, the brain stores what they have learned into more areas of the brain. When it is time for the students to recall what they have learned, through a test as an example, they are able to recall the information easier. Using movement can help your child at home as well. If they are struggling with completing their homework or are having a hard time staying focused, encourage them to get up and move for around 10-15 minutes. As the weather begins to improve(hopefully sooner rather than later), encourage them to get outside and exercise before they begin their homework. If they know that they have a lot of homework, encourage them to set a timer for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, they need to get up and move around to refresh their brain and refocus. If you have any questions or want more ideas on how your child can use movement to help increase their learning, email Mr. Smith at [email protected].
