Principal’s Report
Athletic Sports
It was certainly a marvellous day on Tuesday for our athletic sports. The weather was superb and the ‘friendly competition’ was palpable. The field events in the morning went smoothly with some records broken and many excellent individual achievements. The attitude and approach of all students during this morning session was mar-vellous. The afternoon running events also went well. The inclusion of the primary students added to the occa-sion and brought in another level of enjoyment. The relays were certainly a feature of the afternoon.
Congratulations to all involved in the sports and thanks go to Mr Robins, the VCAL team and staff who helped set-up and organise the day for us. Thanks, also, to the parents who helped out by preparing the grounds as well as helping run the events on the day.
Staffing Changes
There will be some staffing changes coming up next term. I am pleased to announce that Jacob Holm will be join-ing us as a teacher aide while Faye Cook remains on leave. We have also employed Jac Dowell to assist with senor maths. Ms Penman will remain on leave and Mr John is no longer employed by the Department of Education. There will be some alterations to the teaching load and timetable to accommodate these changes.
Willow Lake/Sports
It was pleasing to see so many students, staff, community members and official personnel at the opening of Wil-low Lake on Tuesday. It was a bit of a rush to travel from the sports to the lake for the opening but it was worth-while. The 20,000 fish released into the lake will produce good fishing into the future for our young members of the community. We are proud that Mr Williamson and our 2018 Advance students assisted in rehabilitation and preparation of the lake for the opening.
Interim Reports
Interim Reports will be distributed in hard copy as well as go online on Compass tomorrow. As noted last week, the interim reports provide a snapshot of current progress of your child. The reports focus on effort, attitude and their current level of work. It is important that you note the rating scale for each of the areas as there are slightly different scales for some of the areas reported upon.
You can help your child’s learning by talking to them about the ratings for each of the areas and, if the ratings are a little lower than expected, check with your child then, if necessary, contact the teacher.
Dental Services – Royal Flying Doctor Service
The RFDS is providing a free dental service for all students attending Hopetoun P-12 College. Their initial visit will be on Thursday 2nd May (second week of term 2) to provide information to students on oral health. The dentists and staff will return again on Thursday 9th May (week 3) for those who return the forms indicating they would like to participate in the dental check-ups.
Term 1
The first term of 2019 has flown by. We have achieved plenty in the short ten-weeks available to us. There have been many positives throughout the term. Swimming and athletics are stand-outs along with the rapid settling-in and learning of the students. The SRC is well underway and our student leaders have done a great job in getting the students involved and keen about schooling. Our new and returning teachers have settled in quickly to routine and are adding value to our school. Parents have provided positive feedback about our direction for 2019 and we have a new school council and new leaders of the Parents Club. Work has continued on improving the school grounds and the greenery at the front oval is a delight to see. We have a wonderful group of students attending the College and we are certainly proud of their achievements. We are now looking forward to a positive and pro-ductive Term 2.
Coming Up
Term 2 gets underway on Tuesday 23rd April. We will be holding our ANZAC service on Wednesday 24th April then
Thursday 25th is a day off for ANZAC Day. We move rapidly into cross-country mode in the first few weeks of Term
2 followed by NAPLAN soon after.
