PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It has certainly been a positive start to the school year. The first two days were used productive-ly by staff to prepare for student arrivals and to undertake professional learning central to our school improvement agenda this year. The Year 7 to 12 students settled in quickly on Wednes-day after a brief welcoming assembly. While the Year 7-12 students were settling in, the primary students attended school for a short time to participate in testing programs. Now, today, all stu-dents are at school and all have settled in extremely well.

The start of a new school year brings with it new staff. It is my pleasure to welcome Miss Maddie Tegelhuter, Mrs Trudi Hallam and Miss Rhiannon Dixon. Miss Tegelhuter is teaching the Years 4-6 class while Mrs Hallam is teaching the Prep to Year 3 class along with a known face around the school, Mr Jason Wright. Mr Wright taught most of these students last year in his music teacher role, a role which will continue on Tuesdays. Miss Dixon is our new English teacher. She is teaching Year 7, 9, 11 and 12 English this year. Both Miss Dixon and Miss Tegelhuter have been teaching in England for the past two years hence bring international experience to our school, while Mrs Hallam taught at Rainbow prior to taking family leave. I extend a welcome to all three of our new teachers. And, of course, it is welcome back to all of our returning teachers, support staff and students.

Our school captains, Jacob and Chloe, chaired the welcome assembly on Wednesday. They are looking forward to leading the student group this year. Both told the assembled students and staff about their holidays and indicated that not only did they have some leisure time over the break, they worked in businesses as well as did some study in preparation for their final year of secondary schooling.

New Students Students have joined us this year from a number of locations. We have two new preppies, So-phie and Hamish, Jade in Year 5, Jase in Year 6, Billy, Jacey, Jobe and Abby in Year 7, Tayla in Year 8 and Perri in Year 12. We welcome them all to our College and wish them well for the years to come. There is certainly an optimistic vibe around the school. We are all looking forward to a positive and enjoyable school year with a focus on effort and achievement.

You are invited … Something different to start the school year … Parents, carers and friends are invited to join students and staff for breakfast and a meet and greet on Tuesday 6th February. You are invited to come to school at 8.15am, join us for breakfast (cereal, egg & bacon rolls, juice, coffee) out the front of the school, then go into the classrooms for the year level meetings. The year level meetings will be a short 15 minutes hence all will be over by around 9.15am. This is a great way for you to visit the school, meet the teacher, say hi, meet the class(es) then head off to your other commitments.

However, the agenda for the parents/carers of VCE Unit 3-4 students and the Unit 3-4 students will be a little different. Following breakfast there will be an information session for parents and students of VCE students. This session will provide information about each of the subjects and detail some of the expectations for the year. The session for VCE parents will conclude at about 10.00am. We are hoping that as many parents/carers as possible will be able to attend the breakfast and follow-up sessions. This is a different approach and is a way for you to meet with all of us early in the year on an informal basis. We realise the times may impact on your work however we hope you will be able to make the time to come along and join with us on Tuesday 6th February. If you are intending to come along, please fill in the reply form at the back of this newsletter or respond through Facebook so that we can arrange catering.

Parents of Students in Years 10-12

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for parents/carers of students in Years 10, 11 and 12 this year. The Elevate Education group is touring the Southern Mallee and providing seminars for parents on how to help your child when studying. Elevate will be providing an information session during the day for Years 10-12 students then they are offering a session for parents at night. Even though the seminar comes close on the welcome breakfast, we think the Elevate sessions will be well worthwhile for parents to attend a couple of days later.

The session will cover tips and advice on how to help your child with time management, goal setting, study schedules, managing distractions and other topics of interest to parents interested in supporting their child through the later years of schooling.

The details are:

Topic – How to support your child with their studies run by Elevate Education. Date – Thursday 8th February. Time – 7-8pm. Location – Room 5. Cost – nil. For – Parents of students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Notices for the Elevate parent session will be sent home separately with the students.

Reminders and General Information

The school bucket hat must be worn by all students when they are outside. The canteen is in full operation. Please be sure to get orders in promptly. School uniform is readily available at Kayes Kollectons. The students look fantastic when

they are wearing uniform. The sense of belonging and school pride shines through. Assemblies are held most Tuesday mornings in room 10. We are not holding separate information and get-to-know you meetings this year; it is all

included in our welcome breakfast. Our first School Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 14th February and a Parents

Club meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 7th February at 7.30pm.
