“ It seems essential, in relationships and all tasks, that we concentrate only on what is most significant and important.”

—Søren Kierkegaard, Danish philosopher

At Lundbeck, our approach to innovation is shaped by our Danish origins, a centuries-old tradition of respecting every individual and taking care of one another in times of need. It’s part of our culture, and it’s something we know Canadians take to heart.

Lundbeck Canada is a subsidiary of H. Lundbeck A/S, an international research-based pharmaceutical company, and is based in Montreal, Quebec.

Our focus on the individual has already helped us become specialists in central nervous system disorders, with the hope of having an impact on the lives of people all over Canada. We’ve been part of the Canadian pharmaceutical industry for close to 20 years and market products for the treatment of depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia. And now we’re applying that same passion and drive to oncology.

Creating partnerships and working with healthcare professionals will always be an important part of what we do, and we will continue to do so as we branch out into oncology.

The Lundbeck logo has a distinguished past, dating back some seventy years. Its history demonstrates the vision that existed in the young company, which endures to this day. It was created in the 1930s by the French artist Victor Vasarely and represents the dynamics, credibility and quality of Lundbeck. Its shape is ambiguous—both a star and a human figure with its arms outstretched. Its shape emphasises the humanity that underpins everything we do.

Behind the Lundbeck Starfish

The Starfish represents Lundbeck’s efforts to making a difference, one person at a time.

As the story goes, a young man was picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. A passer-by asked: ”Why are you spending so much energy doing something that is only a waste of time? There are thousands of beaches and millions of starfish. How can you make any difference?” Looking at the small starfish in his hand before tossing it back to the safety of the sea, the young man replied: “It makes a difference to this one.”

At Lundbeck, caring is our culture

Just as we strive to find the right therapy for each individual, we apply this same philosophy in creating meaningful business partnerships and look for the best ways to jointly meet our mutual goals.

Lundbeck was founded in Denmark in 1915, originally manufacturing and selling a range of healthcare and household products. In the 1980s Lundbeck began to focus its efforts exclusively in the area of the central nervous system (CNS).

The 1990s saw rapid expansion for Lundbeck as it opened subsidiaries in over 20 countries. In 1989 in Denmark, Lundbeck launched Cipramil®, or Celexa® as it is known in Canada, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. In 1995, Lundbeck opened the Canadian office. For the first few years in Canada, two products were available; Clopixol® and Fluanxol® each for the treatment of schizophrenia. In 1999 Celexa® became available in Canada. In 2005, Lundbeck Canada introduced two more products: Cipralex®, for depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder ; and Ebixa®, for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. The company started to grow rapidly and now has approximately 200 employees.

In 2012 Lundbeck Canada launched another CNS product, SaphrisTM, for the treatment of schizophrenia and the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder; as well as broadened its horizons by entering into a new domain: oncology.

We were proud to launch our first oncology molecule in 2012, Treanda®, for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. As we forge ahead as a new player in oncology, we continue to keep our patients and customers at the core of everything we do, with the hope of making a positive impact on people’s lives.

Lundbeck is developing a number of innovative pharmaceuticals for the treatment of brain disorders. The pipeline projects are targeting areas where Lundbeck currently has a market presence, such as depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders, as well as new areas such as stroke and alcohol dependence. Lundbeck is also looking into bringing other oncology medications to market.

We at Lundbeck take pride in our partnerships with other pharmaceutical companies around the world. Our partnerships allow us to have an R&D portfolio on par with much larger companies in the industry, and have provided access to resources important in being successful in the research and commercialization of prescription medications.
