Yo! Yeah, I’m a Philly boy, born and reared (I like to think my accent is gone, but I’m surethere are some who would disagree!). Growing up in Philadelphia is probably not as uniquean experience as I may think it is; unique or not I do know that it has shaped me in waysI’m still discovering. It also informs the kind of theater I’m interested in making. For mostof my life it seems Philadelphia has struggled to define itself. Are we a working class cityor a big college town? Are the residents Phanatical sports fans or cutting edge medical professionals? Of course, we’re all of the above…and more. However, the desireto be a ‘world class city’ (a phrase that seems to permeate the political dialogue here)seems to reveal a city trying to find its place in the world—a situation common to the characters portrayed in the plays Azuka produces, and Hope Street and Other Lonely Placesis no exception. That’s the kind of theater that intrigues me: the search for a place, a home,a person to connect to that helps us make sense of the world and our place in it.

Producing new plays has become a hallmark of Azuka Theatre and the development ofthose works a vital part of what we do. Hope Street and Other Lonely Places began as a series of one-act plays set in very specific Philadelphia locations: Wawa, the Penrose Diner, etc. I asked Genne to incorporate those one-acts into a single full-length play, hoping shecould maintain the specificity of those singular Philadelphia locations. Wawa and the Penrose didn’t make the final cut, but the distinctive sense of place she created did. That’sone of the things I love about working on new plays, having the chance to have an impacton the final work. As a director, I’ll listen to anyone’s ‘two cents’ when working on a play(you never know where the next great idea is going to come from) so actors, designersand almost anyone that works on the production is encouraged to provide input into theprocess. Not that the play is hijacked from the playwright, but rather we gather a group oftalented, impassioned people knowing they will try and create a great piece of theater. Itcan be challenging for a playwright to turn over their work to others and have them puttheir own stamp on it, it’s scary to give up your ‘baby’, but since this is Azuka’s tenth worldpremier I like to think playwrights trust how Azuka is going to bring up their ‘kids’!

Thanks for coming and I hope that Hope Street and Other Lonely Places resonates with youas much as it did with those of us who brought it to life.
