Nepal, the rooftop of the world, welcomes more than one million tourists every year. They come for river rafting, mountain climbing, trekking, paragliding — it’s an adventurer’s paradise. Yet, many are unaware of exploitation and injustice here. Twelve to 15 thousand women and children are sold into slavery every year. Generations of

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORSpeople are bonded laborers in factories, working in sub-human conditions, with no hope of escape for themselves or their children. In 2010, Five14 began to work at preventing these injustices. We created tourism opportunities where there were none - in areas where human trafficking was an every day reality. We opened new trail routes, and taught villagers to host tourists in homestays, and guided treks in Langtang National Park.

And it was working.

Villages stopped traffickers from entering, declaring their areas “trafficking free zones”. They opened new busi-nesses, worked together on community projects, and hope was in the air. April 25th changed all that. With 100% of homes destroyed in our partner areas, and mountain regions reduced to landslide rubble, covering lodges, trails, and whole villages - tourism in the future will need a restart. Five14 is here. We are standing with our partners in rural Nepal, as hope is rising.

GHYANGPHEDIis a beautiful place.Surrounded by waterfalls, cliffs, and mountains, it is nestled in a Himalayan valley on the south-ern edge of Nepal’s Langtang National Park. But the most stunning feature is its people - their warm smiles, shy glances, humble hospitality, and rugged determination. For many years, this was a place of sadness. It was nicknamed “Laligau,” which means human traffickers would go there to purchase girls. The poor, unsuspecting people of this area were easy prey.Four years ago, this began to change. Five14 en-tered the area, working to provide jobs through tourist homestays, treks, fish farms and other in-come generating projects. We worked with the local school to expand classes and improve ed-ucation. We built meaningful relationships with the people, influencing their worldview.Last year, the villagers declared their area as a “trafficking free zone.”But now, once again, this community is facing heartbreak. The earthquake devastated this area. The stone and mud homes didn’t stand a chance. The people lost everything.Yet the story doesn’t end there. Hope is rising in Nepal.

EDUCATION is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty. That’s why Five14 is partnering with local schools to make sure children can safely attend school.

Mountains upon mountains unfold as the foot-

hills build into the giant peaks of the Himalayas.Children who learn to read, speak

English, and other basic skills, are far less likely to be exploited.

Families are coming together in Ghyangphedi. With trans-

formation has come celebration — weddings, birth, and new life.

Leaders are essential. Our lo-cal partners started the

homestays and helped organize projects in; they provided critical direction after the earthquake.

Nepal mercilessly. When the 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the country, with over 300 aftershocks, many lost everything.

DISASTER STRUCK

Fear seized the people of Ghyangphedi in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Their mud and stone houses stood no chances against the tremors, and every house collapsed.

Without food t h e p e o p l e

huddled under a few tarps, wondering what was next. “We are feeling lost,” they told us. “We don’t know what to do.” Their entire food stores were buried under their collapsed houses. Many had lost loved ones in the earthquake. Landslides took out more houses and posed a continual threat.

“If we don’t get food, we will die,” one man des-perately told us.

“Please, send food for us.”The entire village huddled under two large tarps. Most of the people sat with blank looks, trying to stay out of the rain. To many, hope seemed lost.

Immediately we had to act. We risked the journey to Ghyangphedi a couple days after the initial earthquake and carried a message of hope - “You are not forgotten. Help is on the way.”

Mobilizing our staff, volunteers, and donors from around the world, Five14 organized shipments of relief supplies. For the next few weeks, our staff traveled back and forth from

Kathmandu to these remote villages, performing assessments, talking with community leaders, meeting with government officials, purchasing relief supplies, and organizing relief distributions.

Loaded with relief supplies, our trucks roll into a village destroyed by

the earthquake.Five14 staff worked tirelessly to

deliver supplies. “We want them to have hope.”

Water is essential to maintaining health. We delivered water filtration

systems to 60 villages.Desperation was the look on so

many faces as people

waited in line for supplies.

Standing in the rubble of what was once her school, 12-year-old Dawa Omo Sherpa tells us, “I

love school. And this is my class. I’m in class four.”

Despite the obvious challenges, she carries hope. “We will rebuild it,” she says confidently. “And it will be better.”

HOPE RISING

Page 11: Hope rising

I am feeling hope Norchung Sherpa told us. He had just learned how to provide clean water for his family and neighbors.

Rebuilding is underway and Five14 will take a key part. We

will create sustainable recovery and transformation.

Before and after The school in Ghyangphedi was completely destroyed. But we are raising fund to rebuild it. We believe this is a key opportunity to not

just rebuild the school, but make it an amazing place for children to learn, a place where hope rises.
