Until there is a cure, there is a community. Many of our participants have chosen to live by this powerful phrase - believing thatthose who live with Parkinsons disease are stronger together. All of us at Hope believe

this too.Our program includes nearly 2,000 vibrant and passionate people living with PD andtheir care partners too. Within this close-knit community, participants find empathy, compassion, motivation, and friendship. Tis past season, movement classes, supportgroups and inspiring events brought members together to share successes and learnfrom experiences.

More than 150 people gathered at Lakes Park to raise awareness for our PD Communityat the Walk 4 Hope. Other participants enjoyed a beloved Parkinson Program tradition:the annual Sunset Cruise. Whether at a large event or a small gathering we are simplybetter together.

Spend the summer among friends. Enjoy a new class, join a support group and stop byone of our Ice Cream Socials to have some fun!

    Warm regards,

Parkinsons Disease and Sun ExposureDr. Amanda Avila

As the season winds to a closeand summers heat, sun andrain is once again upon us,Id like to take a moment todiscuss the risks people withParkinsons disease face with

added sun exposure. As we already know, PD is a disease of the whole body. Not only does it affect movements, balance and the GItract, but it can also affect the skin. In fact, people withPD have almost twice the risk of developing skin cancersincluding melanoma, the most serious type. Somescientists even speculate that both PD and melanomashare a common genetic link that it is actually a lackof natural pigmentation that predisposes people to bothskin cancer and Parkinsons disease. Individuals with PDare also more susceptible to other skin diseases such as

actinic keratosis and seborrheic dermatitis, both of whicause dry, flaky and sometimes itchy skin.

Good skin care and regular visits to the dermatologistcan go a long way in protecting against and treating thediseases. Every person with Parkinsons disease shouldsee a dermatologist for an annual screening. In the

interim, sunscreen should be used daily and reappliedfrequently, especially while spending time outside. Tisis especially important in South Florida, where ourexposure to the sun is so great. Be safe, stay cool andcover up!

Ask a PD Expert: Te Milk EffectKathrynne Holden, MS, RD

Do you use levodopa? If so, have you noticed that whenyou drink milk, the medication doesnt work as well?

Not everyone is sensitive to the protein in cows and

goats milk, but for those who are, a glass of milk in themorning can block their levodopa for the rest of theday. Tis is because the milk contains an unusually highamount of the five neutral amino acids that competewith levodopa for absorption from the small intestine.Milk has an even higher ratio of these amino acids thanmeat, poultry, or fish.

Almond, soy and rice milk alternatives dont containthis high ratio of aminos, so they can be safelysubstituted. Also, some people find that cheese andGreek yogurt do not produce as severe an effect; this is

because some of the whey is drawn off in production, taking with it a large amount of the competing aminoacids.

Do be certain that you are getting enough protein daily about one-half gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. Fatty fish, meat, poultry, cooked driedbeans, nuts and seeds are all good sources of protein.

Capturing Grace is a story about two realms. One is occupied by some of the mostacclaimed modern dancers in the world. Te other is inhabited by a group of peoplewith Parkinsons disease. Tis film is about what happens when those worlds intersect. For me, its also a personal story. I was diagnosed with Parkinsons eight years ago, thethird member of my family to receive that news.
