BALANCE Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, espe-cially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Con-versely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward con-templation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

NO FOOLING You may fool those who work above you; you may fool those who work around you; but you will rarely fool those who work under you. —Anonymous

Archdiocesan Assembly: This coming Saturday, Nov. 4; and you can still go! This annual Archdiocesan event, held at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, brings together several thousand Catho-lics to hear excellent presentations and to celebrate Mass with Archbishop Gustavo and over a hundred priests from throughout the Archdiocese. Keynote speaker in English will be Bishop Robert Reed, president of our national Catholic TV network; and in Spanish Fr. Al Figueroa-Deck, S.J., nationally-renowned author on Hispanic ministry. Other presenters are well-known in our Catholic commu-nity: Bishop Mike Boulette, Fr. Eric Ritter, Sister Lupe Ramirez MCDP. Contact Fr. Paul for car-pooling information. Register (or get more info) at www.assemblysa.org; or call 210-734-1911. The Assembly begins at 9 am and ends at 6:45 pm. There are separate tracks in English and Spanish; our Mass will be bilingual.

Antorcha Guadalupana: This Friday, Nov. 4, we welcome the Antorcha Guadalupana, or Torch of Guadalupe, to Gonzales. The Antorcha, hand-carried each year from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico to St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, is due to arrive in Gonzales around 6 pm; then proceed to Sacred Heart for a mass to be held outdoors, weather permitting. Food for all will be served afterward. The Antorcha is a symbol of unity between our countries, under the protective mantle of Mary, Empress of the Americas. Those wishing to do so, may join the Sacred Heart Gua-dalupanas for a rosary that evening at 6 pm in anticipation of the torch’s arrival. The torch will remain in Sacred Heart Church over-night Friday, then depart Saturday morning for Rosenberg.

Archdiocesan Capital Campaign: A thank you to those who will chair our campaign: Mrs. Lupe Saldana of St. James; Mr. Felipe Leon of Sacred Heart, and the Pastoral Council at St. Patrick. Soon, we will be gathering our teams; we count on the help and support of many!

St. Patrick Pastoral Council: Soon, it will be time to select four new members for the St. Patrick Pastoral Council, to replace Martha Melchor, Vicenta Delgado and Josie Rosas and Arneli Mar. Next weekend, nomination forms will be placed in the St. Pat bulletins. Council members must be participating members of St. Patrick Church, have leadership skills, have the needs of our entire Catholic Community at heart, and be willing to spend the time necessary to advise Father Paul and our Parish Staff as they provide vision and leadership for our community. Please consider who you would like to see serving on the Council in this important time!
