    Congratulations to all of our students! You have completed the Fall Semester and get a monthto reconnect with family and friends. For our 1Ls, breathe!! You made it! And, don't panic -there's time to think about summer! You are not behind and this enews will help you get started.

    For our 2Ls: nicely done. Hoping the Spring is filled with courses you are eager to take andopportunities you are excited to pursue. Summer opportunities are around the corner. Checkour recommended resources and the CDO newsletter for leads.

    3Ls, can you believe this is your last semester? Exciting and overwhelming, all at once! To ourgrads, KUDOS! Especially those who reached the pro bono challenge and will be recognizedat graduation on Thursday! We will share news on those great grads, and where they areheaded post-graduation, in upcoming editions and on the HOPE website.

    We are thrilled to welcome Sharon Booth to the HOPE Public Interest ResourceCenter, as Assistant Director of Public Interest Programs.

    Sharon graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and receivedher J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law. She began her legal careeras a staff attorney with Central Florida Legal Services. At CFLS she served asDirector of the Volunteer Lawyers Project, a private attorney pro bono effort in thecommunity. She also handled family law and landlord-tenant cases and manageda weekly walk-in clinic.

    In 2001 she joined Nova Southeastern Universitys Shepard Broad Law Center. AtNSU she served as Associate Director of Career Development and later Director ofPublic Interest Programs. She managed the law schools Pro Bono HonorProgram, served as advisor to the student-run Public Interest Law Society andoversaw summer and academic-year fellowships. She also served as the lawschools representative to the NS U Community Engagement and CollaborationCommittee and was a member of the 17th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee in

    Broward County.

    Sharon currently sits on the national advisory committee for PSJD-Public Service Jobs Directory (formerly knownas PSLawNet). She previously served as chair of the committee and has also held leadership roles in the PublicService Section of the National Association for Law Placement.

    Ongoing Pro Bono Projects

    Winter Break Pro Bono Research Project with the Miami-Dade Office of the Public DefenderIf you have any interest in indigent criminal defense, Winter Break is the perfect time to learn about theopportunities to work at one of the best Public Defenders of fices in the country. The Miami-Dade PublicDefenders upcoming winter break projects include research for a Know Your Rights pamphlet and a shadowweek for law students from January 6 th-10 th.If you are interested in any of these opportunities, [email protected] with Miami-Dade Public Defender in the subject by December 30 th.

    1Ls: wondering what to do over break? Observe court proceedings, shadow an attorney, or volunteer!Winter Break is a great time to sharpen your legal skills. Want to get a feel for litigation? Visit a courtroomproceeding in state or federal court or shadow an attorney. Looking for some inspiration after a hard semester ofstudying? There are many opportunities to volunteer in a variety of nonprofit agencies. [email protected] if youre looking for some suggestions.

    Policy Project for LGBT Equality with Equality FloridaLaw students are needed to provide legal research to Equality Florida, Floridas statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization. Projects will include review of local ordinances, identifying prospectsfor new opportunities and tracking legislation on the state level to pinpoint possible amendment strategies. If youare interested in working on any of Equality Floridas policy projects, e -mail [email protected] withEquality Florida in the subject.

    Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)VITA volunteers help people with basic tax returns, particularly those with moderate income and fixed income,individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking and elderly taxpayers. No prior tax experience isrequired! Volunteers are needed over Winter Break and throughout tax season, so please contact Eileen Helmer

    and Ricky Cabrera at [email protected] to learn the different ways in which you can become involved with thistremendous project. Mandatory training session required, see date below.

    Americans for Immigrant Justice, Florida Legal Services, Guardian ad Litem, our exceptional Miami Law clinicsand other agencies.

    Friday, February 14 th HOPE Fellowship and Summer Public Interest Fellowship Application DeadlineIf you are a 1L or a 2L and want to create your summer public interest dream job, you should apply for a HOPEFellowship or a Summer Public Interest Fellowship (SPIF). HOPE Fellowships are open to 1Ls and 2Ls. Fellowsfind their own placement and receive a stipend to work at a public interest agency anywhere in the world for 10weeks. The Summer Public Interest Fellowship is open to 1Ls. SPIF Fellows are placed at public interestagencies in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Additionally, SPIF Fellows receive a stipend and participate in aweekly seminar featuring guest speakers on a variety of public interest topics. Click here to apply for a 2014HOPE Fellowship.     Spring and Summer Opportunities

    Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD Program Application for Spring and Summer AmeriCorps JD is an AmeriCorps-funded program that provides law students with an opportunity to expand thedelivery of critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities across the country forveterans, military families, disaster victims, and other vulnerable populations. Law students who participate in

    AmeriCorps JD will have an opportunity to earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award a voucher for education

    expenses for dedicating 300 hours of service to a qualifying legal project with nonprofit programs or otherqualifying organizations. For service in the spring semester, applications are due January 15. For service insummer 2014, applications will open in March 2014 and will be due April 15. Click here for more information .

    Legal Services of Greater Miami Seeks Volunteer Law Clerks for SpringLegal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. is seeking volunteers for its Disability Law Project, Children's AdvocacyProject, Military Legal Advocacy Project, AIDS Legal Advocacy Project, and Homeless Legal Advocacy Project.We ask that students be able to commit at least 12 hours a week for the Spring semester (January to April). Ourprogram provides hands on experience and opportunities to develop critical legal skills. Interested studentsshould e-mail [email protected] as soon as possible for an application.

    2014 Haywood Burns Memorial Fellowship for Social and Economic JusticeThe application for the National Lawyers Guilds's Haywood Burns Memorial Fellowship for Social and Economic

    Justice for Summer 2014 is now available! The Burns Fellowship is open to students and legal workers workingon projects that find creative ways to use the law to advance justice. The application for the fellowship can bedownloaded here and is due by January 14 th, 2014.
