    Important Safeguards!When using an electrical appliance, always follow basic precautions, including the following:

    WARNING:To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury:

    Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces. Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children. Do not allow vacuum cleaner to be used as a

    toy or to run unattended at any time.

    Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, feet and all parts of body away from openings, rotating agitator and other moving parts.

    Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.

    Do not use to pick up flammable or combustible materials such as gasoline or fine wood sandings or use in areas where theymay be present.

    Always turn off this appliance before connecting or disconnecting hose.

    Unplug cleaner before connecting the powered hand tool.

    Do not use without dirt cup or filters in place. Empty cup and clean filter frequently when picking up very fine materials suchas powder.

    Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.

    Do not put any object into openings. Do not use with any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair, or anything that may

    reduce air flow. Always disconnect cord from electrical outlet before servicing the cleaner.

    Unplug cleaner when not in use. Turn off all controls before unplugging.

    Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord. Never handle plug or appliance with wet hands.

    The use of an extension cord is not recommended.

    Do not use with damaged cord or plug. If appliance is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, ordropped into water, take it to a Hoover Sales and Service Center or Authorized Hoover Warranty Service Dealer (Depot).

    Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as a handle, close door on cord or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not runappliance over cord. Keep cord away from heated surfaces.

    Use vacuum cleaner only for its intended use as described in the instructions. Use only attachments recommended byHoover; others may cause hazards.

    Hold plug when rewinding cord onto cord reel. Do not allow plug to whip when rewinding.

    WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive toxicity. Wash hands afterhandling.

    Do not operate cleaner in bare feet or when wearing open toe shoes or sandals.

    A lign upper housing (D ) over cleanerbase (E) and slide down until upperhousing sits securely over base.

    Remove dirt cup (A) from upperhousing (B) by pressing dirt cuprelease button (C ) and pivoting cupout. Set dirt cup aside.

    U sing a P hillips screwdriver, fasten(3) screws located at the bottom ofthe upper housing.

    Place bottom of dirt cup into cleanerbody first. Pivot cup into cleanerbody.

    Press on dirt cup release buttonwhile firmly pressing on dirt cup.

    R elease button in order for it toreturn to proper position and lockthe dirt cup into place.

    U sing a Phillips screwdriver, remove(3) screws from cleaner base. DONOT DISPOSE OF SCREWS.Remove cardboard and discard.

    Polarized plugTo reduce the risk of electric shock,this appliance has a polarized plug(one blade is wider than the other).This plug will fit in a polarized outletonly one way.     Telescoping handleThe telescoping handle includesadjustable settings to variousheights for user comfort. The handleis designed to retract into the bodyof the cleaner for convenience instoring or carrying the cleaner.Lower the handle by depressing thebutton (B) located at the handlebase and pushing the handle down.R aise the handle by depressing thebutton and pulling the handleupward, locking it into the desiredposition.

    SettingsFor maximum cleaning perfor-mance, the following carpet heightsettings are recommended:

    Lowest setting: for all types ofcarpet.

    Note: If the cleaner is difficult to

    Cleaning lightweightflexible rugsStand on one end of rug and movecleaner toward other end or edge.Before reaching edge, push downon handle. This will lift up the nozzle

    (front of cleaner) as shown and willprevent rug from clinging to cleaner.C ontinue to lift up nozzle so thatwhen you have reached the edge, itis completely off the rug. M ovecleaner back to start again, lowernozzle, and use only forwardstrokes.

    Cleaning toolsTools allow for cleaning surfacesabove the floor and for reachinghard to clean areas.

    The cleaner is ready for tool usewhen handle is in uprightposition.

    The agitator brush roll will notrotate when the cleaner is in theupright position or the if the agi-tator brush roll shut off indicatoris in the OFF position when thehandle is lowered.

    Agitator brush rollshut-offThe agitator brush roll shuts off auto-matically for tool use, when thecleaner is in the upright position.

    To manually shut off the agitatorbrush roll for cleaning hard floors,step on the pedal (E). The indicator(F) will show red in the brush rolloff window. To turn the agitatorbrush roll on, step on the pedalagain. The indicator will show red inthe brush roll on window.

    How to clean toolsTo clean the hose and poweredhand tool, wipe off dirt with a clothdampened in a mild detergent.Rinse with a damp cloth. DO NO Tsubmerge powered hand tool inwater.

    Removing hoseWhen using cleaning tools, placecleaner handle in the upright posi-tion. The agitator brush roll willnot rotate when the cleaner is inthe upright position. A lso, turncleaner OFF before disconnectingand connecting hose to hose tube(G).

    To use hose, lift hose end (H) asshown.

    When you are finished cleaning withthe tools, reposition hose end intotube.

    Select proper toolI. Combination tool use with brushfor carved furniture, table tops,books, lamps, lighting fixtures,venetian blinds, baseboards, shut-ters, and registers.R emove brush (Fig. 2-15) to cleanupholstered furniture, draperies,mattresses, clothing, and carpetedstairs.J. Powered hand tool may be usedfor upholstered furniture, draperies,mattresses, clothing, automobileinteriors, and carpeted stairs.

    K. Crevice tool may be used in

    tight spaces, corners and alongedges in such places as dresserdrawers, upholstered furniture,stairs and baseboards.

    L. Wands are used to give extralength to your hose. U se them withany of the above tools.

    3. Maintenance

    Familiarize yourself with these homemaintenance tasks as proper useand care of your cleaner will ensurecontinued cleaning effectiveness.

    When to emptyIt is recommended that the dirt cupbe emptied before the dirt reachesthe fill line (A ) , or after every use ifpreferred. Place the cleaner in theupright position before removing thedirt cup.

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet. Do not use cleaner withoutdirt cup or filters in place.

    CAUTION: Very fine materials,such as face powder or corn-starch, may seal the filter andcause loss of suction. When usingthe cleaner for this type of dust,empty the cup and clean the fil-ters often.

    twist hose to lock it into place.

    Extra Reach hose(available at additional cost)

    The Extra Reach hose provideseasier cleaning of stairs and hard toreach places. Follow the stepsbelow for attaching and detachingthe Extra R each hose.

    A lign end of hose with projections(D) over slots (E) on Extra Reachhose. Slide hose into slots and twisthose to lock it into place. (To detachhose, reverse procedure).

    A ttach wands or tools to the otherend of hose.

    NOTE: Hose must be connected todirt duct and hose tube afterremoving Extra Reach hose forcarpet or floor cleaning.

    Place the filter assembly on the dirtcup, aligning (3) tabs (A ) on filterwith (3) slots on dirt cup (B) andtwist it clockwise to secure intoposition. Press dirt cup door releasebutton (C ) to latch dirt cup doorclosed.

    let. Do not use cleaner without dirt cupor filters in place.

    Remove dirt cup as described in Fig. 3-2.

    Twist filter assembly (A ) counterclock-wise. Remove assembly from dirt cup.

    Secondary filterHow to clean

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet. Do not operate cleanerwithout dirt cup or filters in place.

    With thumb, slide latch (A) locatedat the top of the housing to the rightand pull down to remove gray filterframe. R emove black foam filter.R inse filter frame cartridge and foamfilter under cold water.

    A llow both filter frame and filter to airdry for 24 hours before replacing fil-ter into filter frame. R eposition filterframe cartridge by inserting tabs (B)into slots on back of housing. R otatefilter cartridge frame up toward topof housing and snap closed.

    What to buyWhen purchasing a new secondaryfilter cartridge, ask for HOOVERpart No. 93002517. To purchase anew black foam filter, ask forHOOVER part No. 93002518.

    Cleaning filters

    Remove dirt cup as described inFig. 3-2.

    Place bottom of dirt cup into cleanerbody first. Pivot cup into cleanerbody.

    With fingers in slots, pull filter frame(A ) straight out.

    D irt and debris can be cleaned fromthe filter cartridge by brushing withthe cleaners combination tool. DONOT RINSE OR WASH the HEPAfilter cartridge.

    Slide back into position on cleaner.

    Replacing lens

    R eposition lens and secure with thescrew.

    Belt replacementThe belts are located under the bot-tom plate of the cleaner and shouldbe checked from time to time to besure they are in good condition.

    The flat (wide) belt is describedbelow; the other belt is describedunder A gitator brush roll.

    When to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet. WARNING: Agitator brushroll can start suddenly. Unplugcleaner before turning it over.

    To check the flat belt, remove bot-tom plate as shown in R eplacingflat belt. Replace belt if it isstretched, cut or broken.

    What to buyTo assure effective operation, use

    only genuine HO O VER belts withyour cleaner. When purchasing anew belt, ask for Flat belt - HOOVERpart No. 40201-271.

    Installing bulb

    Pull old bulb straight out of socket.Push new bulb straight into socketuntil locked in place.

    Excessive force is not required.

    Removing lens

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

    Press handle release pedal andplace handle in low position.

    U sing a Phillips screwdriver, removethe the screw as shown and lift offlens.

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet. Do not operate cleanerwithout dirt cup or filters in place.

    Positioning back of belt

    With lettering on outside of belt,slide new belt over motor shaft (D ) .

    Positioning front of belt

    Place other end of belt over largepulley (C ) while rolling the pulley indirection shown.

    Turn agitator brush roll making surebelt turns freely and is not pinchedbetween agitator brush roll and agi-tator shield.

    R emove used belt (B ) from largepulley (C ) and discard.

    Removing bottom plate

    WARNING: Agitator brush roll canstart suddenly. Unplug cleanerbefore turning it over.

    Place handle in low position andturn cleaner over so bottom side isfacing up.

    R emove the 6 screws as shown witha Phillips screwdriver.

    Lift off bottom plate (A ) .

    R eposition bottom plate and 6Phillips head screws. Tightenscrews securely.

    The agitator brush roll

    When to replaceWhen agitator brush roll brushes areworn, the agitator brush roll shouldbe replaced.

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

    WARNING: Agitator brush roll canstart suddenly. Unplug cleanerbefore turning it over.

    What to buyWhen purchasing a new agitator,ask for HOOVER part No.93002361.

    To check condition of brushes, moveedge of a card across bottom platewhile turning agitator brush roll. Tomaintain cleaning effectiveness,replace agitator brush roll if brushesdo not touch card.

    Removing agitator brush roll

    Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

    Turn carpet height adjustment knobto lowest setting. Turn cleaner overand remove bottom plate ( Fig. 3-13) .Lift up agitator brush roll and slideV-belt (A ) off agitator brush roll.

    Inspecting V-belt

    The V-belt is designed to last for along time and is not normallyreplaced. H owever, if the V-belt iscracked, gouged or broken, itshould be replaced.

    Slide flat belt off large pulley asshown in Fig. 3-14.

    To remove V-belt, slide back of beltover pulley (B). Then firmly pull onbelt and snap it out.

    Discard used belt. Replace with

    HOOVER part No. 40201-200.To install new belt (with lettering onoutside of belt), slide back of beltover pulley and pull front of belttoward groove (C) next to pulley.Belt will pop into place.

    Positioning belt on agitatorbrush roll

    Before positioning belt onto agita-tor brush roll, check for debrisaccumulation as described in Fig.4-3.

    Insert agitator brush roll through beltand position belt in groove (D) onagitator brush roll.

    Installing agitator brush roll

    G rasp agi tator brush roll firmly andfit it into position by first sliding endopposite the belt into the rectangu-lar slot (E) on side of cleaner.

    Pull other side of agitator brush roll(F) into place. Belt may fit looselywhen properly installed.

    R eposition flat belt and bottom plate(Figs. 3-15 through 3-16).

    Powered hand tool

    Agitator brush rollreplacementWhen agitator brushes are worn, thebrush roll should be replaced. A skfor HOOVER part No. 48414-088.

    How to replace1. Remove tool from hose and turnit so bottom faces up. Press thelatches on either side of tool andremove bottom plate (A).

    3. Remove agitator including endplates (C ) and discard.

    4. Inspect belt to ensure that it is ingood condition. If belt is cracked,gouged or broken, replace it (seefollowing section) .

    5. Insert brush roll through belt andposition belt over gear teeth (D ) onbrush roll.

    8. To replace bottom plate (A ) , insertthe four tabs on edge of bottomplate into slots on front of tool.

    Pivot bottom plate down and snapclosed.

    7. Replace belt guard (B) makingsure not to pinch brush bristles inguard. Turn agitator, to make sure itrotates freely.

    R eplace and tighten screws.

    Thermal protectorA n internal thermal protector hasbeen designed into your cleaner toprotect it from overheating.When the thermal protector acti-vates, the cleaner will stop run-ning. If this happens, proceed asfollows:

    1. Turn the cleaner OFF and dis-connect it from the electrical out-let.
