May 2015 HOOT OF THE MONTH Meet BETTE C. SMITH: I was born a child of God in San Antonio, Texas, to a family of three brothers and two sisters. I graduated from high school, took flying lessons and became a pilot at 16 years old. After graduating from Texas University, I married my childhood sweetheart. We had two children, and I lost him in 1969 in Atlanta. I married my second husband, adopted his two children and moved to Jacksonville. I worked for 38 years at what is now called Wells Fargo as Vice President of Operations for Florida. I have managed in insurance, meat packing data processing, banking and an 18 stylist hair salon. Was active in a large church: worked in the nursery, was bereavement coordinator, and on a committee to raise 4.3 million dollars to build a new building with a gym, kitchen and auditorium. I volunteered at Mayo Clinic for 10 years in Jacksonville. We traveled to Europe 9 times and we lived in Atlanta, North Carolina, New York and Jacksonville. We invested into a hair salon when banking got kinky. We were Gator Football Fans and had season tickets for 37 years making all games, home & away. We had several motor homes and a dog that urinated in 49 states in the continental US. I rode my bike in the MS150 from Jacksonville to Ocala and back to Jacksonville (150 miles). We moved to Tampa three years ago to be near our two sons, due to my husband’s illness. I lost him after 42 years. I still have a bucket list with jumping out of an airplane on it. I have water skied, zip lined, and parasailed. I love baseball, football and all outdoor activities. I enjoy dominos and card games. I walk three miles each morning when weather permits. I love the trips the Owls provide and the wonderful people of the Owls. “A special thanks to Bill Castens, Anne, Marty & Sylvia for all the effort provided for us to enjoy our golden years!” Bette C.
