Holiday Gift GivingThe holidays are coming up, which means your spending may go up as well. What can you do to keep your spending low? Think outside the box! Not everyone on your list needs a store bought gift. Parents and grandparents will cherish a handmade gift just as much, if not more, than a store bought gift. The best part is you save money and your gift is something you made directly from your heart, which money cannot buy!

Here are some handmade gift ideas:

• Make salt dough ornaments

• Bake cookies (see the next page)

• Build a bird feeder

• Decorate a picture frame

• Paint or draw a picture

Important Gift Making Reminders! • Before buying materials to make

your gift, look around your house and see if you can find something there first. Just be sure to get permission to use whatever you find.

• Use your imagination! You want your gift to reflect you and make the person receiving it feel special.

• Plan ahead. Some gifts may take longer to make than others.

Homemade CookiesIf you’re looking for a great Christmas gift, trying making these homemade cookies! Here’s what you’ll need:

• 1 cup unsalted butter • 1/2 tsp almond extract • 1/2 tsp salt• 1 cup granulated white sugar • 1 egg • 3 cups all purpose flour• 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tsp baking powder • Decorating icing or candies

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F

2. Using a mixer, cream butter and sugar until smooth, at least 3 minutes. Then beat in the extracts and egg.

3. In a separate bowl, mix baking powder, salt and flour, then add to wet ingredients a little at a time until well combined. The dough will be very stiff. If it becomes too stiff, take the dough out, wet your hands and knead it by hand.

4. Divide the dough into workable batches. Sprinkle a little flour on the countertop and on a rolling pin, then roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters and place on a well-greased cookie sheet.

5. Bake for 6-8 minutes. Let cool until firm enough to transfer to a cooling rack.

6. Once completely cooled, decorate with your favorite icing or candies!
