For this week’s issue, we asked local young adultsto do a difficult thing. We asked them tochoose their favorite things about living here.

Why is that tough? Because in manyinstances there is just too much tochoose from.

In our admittedly unscientific poll, wefirst compiled our own lists of the bestplaces to dine, drink, volunteer, live, etc. Then we asked local young adults to pick

their faves from our lists.

Often they agreed. But equally as oftenthere were plenty of write-ins. We didn’t

take it personally. There’s no way we couldhave possibly compiled a list of all the coolestplaces in the Corridor. There are just too many.Plus it comes down to personal taste.

Take, for example, the dining category. Our originallist contained places like the Irish Democrat, Cibo,

Atlas and Vitos. Plus my personal fave Phong Lan (aonce best-kept secret in Cedar Rapids that is rapidlyincreasing its fan base).

So yeah. Many of our picks rose to the top, but what

was even more interesting was the long list of restaurantsthat people liked enough to write-in. Thirty different placeswith a combined 39 votes.

What does that say to me, other than that there’s A LOT ofrestaurants in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City and in betweenthat I need to try? Well. For one. No one has any excuse tosay there aren’t plenty of places to dine in the area. If youever need a reminder or an idea, just check out our list atHooplaNow.com

In fact, for complete results of the entire survey, check out ourWeb site.

On pages 14 and 15, we printed the top five in each of our 12categories, such as place to work, shop, volunteer, live, eat, goout on the town as well as favorite event, festival, recreationactivity or sporting event, winery or brewery and culturalattraction.

The top five is interesting enough. But for the full story, go tothe Web site, where you’ll see the exact number of votes eachplace received (like how it was a close race between MercyMedical Center and University of Iowa for top employers) orhow CSPS/Legion Arts narrowly missed snagging a top fiveposition in the cultural attraction list by only two votes. So check it out. And if you disagree with any of the results, share your thoughts with us. We’d love to add to the list.

MYSTYLE {Nathan takes his fashion cuesfrom Bond. James Bond.

Want to show off your style?E-mail [email protected]

What he’s wearing:“I found several pieces of this combo on a businesstrip to London. The shirt is from Thomas Pink. Thetie is from a shop whose name I cannot remember. The watch was purchased at a kiosk in Gatwickairport while waiting for my flight home.

The vest is part of a three-piece Ralph Lauren suitthat I’ve had for years. One of the great thingsabout a three-piece suit is that you can breakit apart. You can’t see it in the photo, but I amwearing solid navy blue pants — not the matchingpants from the suit.

The cuff links are Tiffany sterling silver knots.I like them because they are understated. Theydon’t scream for attention, but if you do choose tonotice them, they are like little sculptures.

In general, this outfit illustrates what I mean whenI say that style is about the details. The subtleblue stripes of the vest pick up on the colors thenecktie, but don’t try to compete with the loudshirt. The silver cuff links draw your eye to thebezel of the watch and vice versa.

And, of course, my shoes match my belt.”

What he says:“If you want to see how a gray suit should beworn, just watch ‘From Russia with Love.’ “

DISCOVERY

I am proud to be a CedarRapidian. I am the senior pastorof Living Waters KingdomChurch. I was born and raisedin Cedar Rapids.

In the summer of 2002, Irelocated to Milwaukee, Wisc.I spent four years there, butit never quite felt like home.Although I was surrounded byall of the amenities of city life,I often wanted to click my heelstogether and say “there’s no

place like home.”

I found myself not only missingmy family, but I missed seeingfamiliar landmarks. I would missthe nights that I spent sittingby the duck pond at NoelridgePark clearing my thoughts. Ialso remember a time when Igot sick and found myself inthe precarious situation of notknowing where the hospitalswere. I remember thinking thatif I was in Cedar Rapids I would

have easy access to either MercyMedical Center or St. LukesHospital and not have to beconcerned about the quality ofcare I would receive.

Here, I appreciate the fact thatI don’t always have to look overmy shoulder.

I am very proud of the factthat there are cultural entitiessuch as the African AmericanHistorical and Cultural Museum

of Iowa. After I moved to backto Cedar Rapids to start LivingWaters, they graciously openedtheir doors to us.

After the devastation of theflood, I became even more proudto live here, because this cityshowed the world that althoughwe may be relatively small insize, we have enormous heart, resiliency and strength.

I love Cedar Rapids.

I love Cedar Rapids

It may be the back road drive, thesmall town charm or the fabulous foodthat will make Augusta one of yourCorridor favorites. But whatever it is,I guarantee once you try it, you willkeep coming back!

The New Orleans-style shrimp andfried mushrooms with garlic aioli willknock your socks off. I have never hadmushrooms like this! Any combination ofappetizer, soup and salad and entree willsatisfy you to no end. You can indulgein a simple sandwich or stretch out yourculinary experience into a five-coursemeal. Whatever your choice, you will beimpressed. The aura of the restaurantonly enhances the food with its exposed

brick interior and mismatched chairsand friendly staff. You are sure to seethe chef pop his head out a time or twofrom the kitchen to see his patrons.

After my multiple Augusta experiences,I can never order similar menu itemsat any other restaurant because theyjust don’t compare. No one can touchthe mushrooms, shrimp, fried bonelesschicken, tenderloins or cherry breadpudding. I would name all the menuitems but I don’t have the space.

See for yourself, go to Augusta foryour next date night, Sunday brunch orlazy lunch and your taste buds will bechanged forever! Enjoy!

Iowa City shopping

Ashley Funkhauser, 27, Iowa CityDOWNTOWN IOWA CITY BOUTIQUES

From Iowa Avenue to thePedestrian Mall on College Street, downtown Iowa City is filledwith great places to shop. I loveleisurely walking around fromdoor to door to see what’s inside. With the addition of some newand unique boutiques this summer, the Ped Mall is starting to take onthe feeling of the small Chicagoneighborhoods.

My favorite addition is Catherine’sCheap and Chic. Like Catherine’s,its sister store, Cheap and Chicis full of fun, girlie clothing andaccessories. However, as the name

states, the store is cheap! Thereare so many great things that youcan easily walk in, pick up fiveitems and spend less than $50.It’s great to have a store downtownthat fills the niche of trendy clotheson a budget.

I still love Dulcinea, Domby, VelvetCoat, Catherine’s and another newaddition, Inbox. If one store doesn’thave what you’re looking for, it’sonly a short distance to the next. They are full of fun clothing andaccessory pieces ranging in pricefrom “I’ll take three” to “Whoa, thatis more than my car loan payment!”

The Iowa Artisans Gallery is aplace unlike any other. The one-of-a-kind jewelry and art pieces areas fun to purchase as they are tosee. I am never disappointed withthe shop and leave thinking “Untilnext time.”

Some stores might lookintimidating, but don’t fear theunknown. You will be surprised asto what you find in downtown IowaCity and how much variety is in itssmall space. My list is only a smallportion of what you’ll find and it istruly an experience everyone needsto have in the Corridor.

quick wits could send you home with a pocketfull of cash and memories of fun times. The Millis a wonderful experience, from the food to thepeople. It is quite easily my favorite place whenI’m in the area. I recommend it to anyone!

Indian CreekNature Center

My 8-year-old son is the bugwhisperer. While other boys hisage can rattle off Tom Brady’sfootball stats, my son can tell youthe detailed differences betweena stink bug and a leaf bug. Sowhen Indian Creek Nature Centerintroduced its Bug Academy, wewere quick to sign up.

Indian Creek Nature Center offerswoodlands, prairies and wetlandsto explore and miles of trails tohike. While perhaps best knownfor its spring Maple Syrup Festivaland fall Honey Fest, Indian Creekoffers so much more.

My kids have been attendingthe excellent programs andcamps at Indian Creek ever sinceI can remember.

As preschoolers, they built aneagle-sized nest with sticksand watched bees in the hives. They saw salamanders, turtlesand snakes up close, and theylearned to identify differentfrogs’ songs.

As elementary students at daycamp, my kids learned fire safetyand cooked biscuits in a campfire. They built their own fishing poles

and tried their hands at fishing. They erected a natural shelter andlearned how to use a compass. My son even had his last birthdayparty at Indian Creek — completewith a snake search.

Our favorite times at Indian Creek, though, are the times we simplytake walks on our own. We like

to explore the wetland area andcount how many frogs we canspot, walk through the prairieand find insects or peek intothe bat houses and see the batshuddled together.

Indian Creek Nature Center is aninvaluable Corridor getaway forany nature lover.

DISCOVERY

My favorite place in theCorridor is without a doubtValhalla Combat Club inCedar Rapids. There is nobetter place in the area toget punched in the face!

Valhalla is a mixed martialarts and boxing gym ran byDemian Papagni and BillKamery. Coaches include:Keoni Koch, Dave Sherzer,Devon Christian and Joe

(aka Joda — old schoolboxing genius). The gym isopen seven days a week, from 4 to 8 p.m. weekdaysand weekend hours vary. It’s a great place to trainfor all skill levels. Everyoneis extremely respectful andwelcomes newcomers withopen arms. However, egosshould be checked at thedoor, because Keoni takesgreat pleasure in testing

the point at which anarrogant meathead willphysically and mentallyreach their proverbialbreaking point (kidding...sort of).

Valhalla Combat Club isthe premiere place in thearea to learn fundamentalsof mixed martial arts, geta great workout, as wellas learn mental discipline.

It’s an incredible group ofpeople — basically one bighappy family, assumingthat your idea of a happyfamily involves trying tobludgeon your brothersinto submission.

Please be advised that ifyou have a popped collar, white sunglasses or a faux-hawk gym privileges canimmediately be revoked.

ANDREA DIETZENBACH PHOTOS

Sometimes I like to kick back and reflect on how greatit is to be an adult. I usually need these moments whenadulthood really sucks to remind me that there arebenefits too. For example, you can stay up as late as youwant, watch whatever you like on TV and eat anythingyou want for dinner. Remember when you were little andyou vowed, “When I grow up, I’m going to have pizza fordinner EVERY night!” Well, I’m pleased to say that someweeks I come pretty close to that goal.

And to up the ante, not only can you eat pizza wheneveryou like, you can have any kind of pizza you choose. Ipracticed this particular perk when my husband and Irecently went to lunch at Wig and Pen. Share a pizza? That’s infantile! After several minutes of unsuccessfulnegotiation over pizza toppings we decided: we areadults; we can each have our own pizza!

Freeing ourselves of the restrictive bonds of commonsense we each ordered a small pizza exactly to ourliking. I prefer lots of toppings: loads of veggies and a

variety of meats. My husband sways between the safetyof pepperoni and beef to the bold flavors of ham andpineapple.

I ordered The Pub Special with Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onion and sweet Italian pepperson a crisp thin crust. There was loads of cheese and thesauce was nice and tangy, not too sweet and really fresh.

My husband ordered the Chicago Style Stuffed Pizzawith pepperoni and beef. It was filled with gooey cheesein a deep, pan crust with fresh tomato sauce on top. Iam always a fan of a good Chicago deep dish and thisone was done well.

Yes, we had lots of pizza leftover and we put on quite adisplay of gluttony when the waitress filled our two-mantable with piles of food. But I’m a grown-up, dammit, and I’m going to order as much pizza as I please.

What’s it like in Gus’ on aHawkeye game day?Crazy. It’s wall-to-wall people, and it’slike I’m just running around with myhead cut off pretty much. It depends onhow Iowa’s doing too. If they’re havinga good year, it stays pretty consistentlybusy. If they’re stuggling, it tails off asthe season goes on.

Tell me about your game room. It’s basically four pool tables, two dartboards, a shuffleboard, Golden Tee Golf,Silver Strike Bowling, Big Buck Hunter.

And you have a couple ofleagues? We have a dart league that goes year-round, and then a couple of in-housepool leagues, and a Silver Strike league.

What drink is most popular withpool players? With dart players? The pool players, they like their bigmugs of ice cold beer. The dart league, you have your beer and your team shot. There’s always team shots in dart league. They like stuff with Red Bull.

One thing that might surpriseyour regulars.A lot of people probably don’t know howI got the nickname Chopper. When I firststarted working in landscaping, I went infor an interview, and (the interviewer) wasreally interested that I used to sell Cutcoknives, so i spent an hour and a half in theinteview, cutting stuff with the knives. Wenever really talked about what I knew, theyjust kept finding stuff for me to cut. Theystarted calling me Chopper, and it stuck.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.

T. Coraghessan Boyle, better known as T.C. Boyle ,is an extremely prolific writer. His most recent book,“The Women,” follows countless others including “Afterthe Plague,” “Drop City” and “The Inner Circle.” Afterreading some rave reviews of “The Women” I decided itwas time I tried some T.C. Boyle. On my search, I found“THE TORTILLA CURTAIN” released in 1995. If T.C.Boyle’s other books are half as good as “The TortillaCurtain,” I am definitely going to add them to my list.

“The Tortilla Curtain” follows the lives of twoLos Angeles couples. The first, Delaney and KyraMossbacher, are your typical American family. Theyhave a 6-year-old son, a mortgage and good jobs.Delaney writes a column for a magazine and Kyra is ahigh-end real estate agent. They worry about the samethings many Americans worry about, declining homevalues and the desire to keep their neighborhood safe.

In stark contrast to the Mossbacher’s are Candido and

America Rincon. The Rincon’s are illegal immigrantsliving in a makeshift shack not far from Mossbacher’ssafe secure neighborhood. They have no papers, nomoney, no jobs, don’t speak English and to top it all off,America is pregnant. Try as they might, work and moneyseem impossible to find.

While the Mossbachers’ and Rincons’ lives seemcompletely unrelated, as you can imagine, they crashinto each other in a bizarre, yet oddly believable, way:Delaney behind the wheel of his Acura runs into poorCandido. Events unfold, biases are revealed and a trulyintriguing story results.

“The Tortilla Curtain” examines touchy political andsocial issues but manages to do so in a non-judgmentalway. In a time when immigration and violence arestill hot political issues, and declining home valuesare on everyone’s mind, this book offers an honestlook at these issues from both sides of the fence. It

is hard to not feel apang of sympathy forboth Mossbacher’s andRincon’s; it is also hardto not want to hit all ofthem upside the head forthe stupid choices theymake and completelyabsurd commentsthat come out of theirmouths.

It is only right tomention that T.C. Boyle has Iowa ties. He attended theUniversity of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop in 1974 andreceived his doctorate from the UI in 1977.

MUSICNOTES { You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.

The most entertaining rock in Cedar Rapidsmight just come from a self-proclaimed “powertrio” of 40-somethings with a funny name and amascot that looks like a blob of, well, Knubby.

Spotted mostly at Tornado’s Grub and Pub inCedar Rapids, Knubby is a local gem formednearly two years ago by a group of longtimefriends who took it upon themselves to take themusic seriously and themselves a little less so.Thus, Knubby — a “purposefully obtuse” nameaccording to Chad Wallenberg, guitar and vocals— and the little green slacker-blob were born.

Knubby has a Green Day sensibility (fun,Dookie-era Green Day, not lame, sociallyconscious modern Green Day) and a rock soundreminiscent of their many influences — The Who,Cheap Trick and more recent throwbacks likeQueens of the Stone Age and the Racquenteurs.

Their brand of rock — look especially for “Giant’sFoot” and “Feral Hogg” on “Knubby 2” — leadsto the kind of involuntary vertical head rocking

reserved for rock without qualifiers. They stringtogether catchy hooks and infectiously goofylyrics , making them stand out in a crowdedlocal scene.

Their sound is much refined between their firstand second CDs (bassist Jim Scharosch has arecording studio in his basement where he’sproduced a number of albums, including both ofKnubby’s), largely the result of time off duringthe floods when the band was able to devotemore effort to their songs. The result is a uniquesound that not only let’s them stand out locally, but distances them from their influences andgives them their own identity.

“We take what we do seriously,” says JohnMorgan. “At the same time, we don’t takeourselves seriously.”

That attitude has served Knubby well in a sea ofyounger bands. Still, this power trio of fathersand fortysomethings isn’t going anywhere.

GETOUT Get to the movies{

The Landlocked Film Festival offers many piecesin many places, but the centerpiece of the four-day event is the Iowa premiere of “16 to Life” atthe Englert Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Known as “Duck Farm No. 13” to the folks aroundMcGregor, where most of the footage was shotin October 2007, it’s flying under a new nameand generating industry buzz, winning awards atMethod Fest in California last spring.

But during the final phases of the nearly $1million film, teenagers invited to test screeningsjust didn’t like the “Duck Farm” name, saysdirector Becky Smith, 53, an Okoboji native nowliving and working in Los Angeles.

“It wasn’t hip to them,” she says. “They thoughtit was about farm life. As much as the adultsliked the title, we needed to change it to make itaccessible to teenagers, because a large part ofthe film is about teenagers.”

It’s a coming-of-age romantic comedy starringHallee Hirsh, now 21. She’s been acting all herlife, instantly recognizable as Tom Hanks’ much-younger aunt in “You’ve Got Mail” and RachelGreene on “ER.”

She says this role eclipses all the others on herlengthy resume. “It’s my absolute, most favoritething I’ve ever done,” she says. “I can’t tell youhow much I love the role, how much I love thescript and how much I loved the actual event ofshooting it.”

She took her character’s focus on China andits Cultural Revolution to heart. She traveledto China with Smith to present the film touniversity students in Beijing in May, and isnow studying cultural anthropology at UCLA,including an intensive Chinese languageimmersion.

“This movie sparked that completely,” Hirsh says.

Both Smith and Hirsh are looking forward to theIowa festival, seeing people with whom theyworked, seeing audience reaction to the film andseeing the landscape again.

“My mother’s very favorite spot is McGregor,”Smith says. “With the rolling hills and big cliffsby the river, it’s really a stunning-looking placewhere Grant Wood painted. The people locallywere as nice as you could possibly imagine.”

The festival, which runs Aug. 27 to 30 in severaldowntown Iowa City sites, also features topicalworkshops, panel discussions and screenings formore than 80 films, ranging in length from twominutes to two hours.
