I’m just sayin’,

Everyone around here remembers exactly what theywere doing and where they were during those epicsix days in June 2008.

In that way, last summer’s floods are to theCorridor as events like landing on the moon and

JFK’s assassination are to the nation.

To others outside our area, theevents of last summer may not seemas monumental as space travel and apresident’s assassination. But thosesix days are ones that will endure inthe memories of those who livedthrough them.

Like everyone else I have my own stories. As a reporter for The Gazette at that time,I interviewed Melanie Primasing onWednesday, June 11, as she packed up everylast scrap of candy and piece of furniture at

Simply Divine, the candy shop at the corner ofFirst Street and Third Avenue SE. The shop hasjust reopened.

Later that afternoon, I was sent over to the shelterat Roosevelt Middle School. When I tried to returnlater, the only bridge still open was First Avenue.

It was pouring. My cell phone was dead. Traffic wascrawling. And my tires splashed through several inchesof water as I finally got through the bottleneck andcrossed the bridge. Not long after, the road was closedcompletely.

The next day, I stood in hip waders at the cornerof 10th Street and O Avenue in the Time Checkneighborhood just after the water overcame thelevee. I watched, and cried, as rescue workers

went after and brought back a 90-year-old man andhis pet poodle.

When photographer Liz Martin and I left Time Check weheaded to the Czech Village before getting back on I-380, theonly route across the river at that point. I was with her whenshe shot that iconic photograph used in the next day’s paperwith the headline Epic Surge.

I was also at Mercy Medical Center the next day when thelast ambulance pulled away with the last patient and thehospital staff was able to heave a sigh of relief after asuccessful evacuation. And once the waters receded andwe’d taken stock of our losses, I was at the FEMA and SBAsatellite trailers talking to people who’d lost everything andwere still able to joke as they patiently waited in lines in90 degree heat.

The images from those experiences will never leave me. Butmore importantly than where we were when the flood camewas where we were when the floodwaters were gone.

As a community, we have been there for each other.

I’ve loved Cedar Rapids for years, and always plan to makemy home here. But the floods have made me love it evenmore. I’ve been asked since the flood by friends out of state ifI think Cedar Rapids will ever be the same again.

No. I don’t think it will be the same. I know it will be better.

I am amazed by the resiliency of this city and its people everyday. Sure there are businesses that have yet to reopen andsome that won’t. But the numbers that have is astounding. The way patrons have rallied around flood-affected business isheartwarming.

And that’s what this weekend, on the one-year anniversaryof the flood, is all about. We will remember the tragedy. But we also will celebrate the successes. Rejoice in theground that’s been covered and refuel our souls for work yetto be done.

Last summer, weeks after the water from thatdevastating June flood had receded, Kari Lammer washaving lunch with a couple of co-workers and talkingabout training for an upcoming half-marathon inDes Moines.

“I just said to them, ‘The flood covered 10 squaremiles — that’d be a really interesting training route,to run along where the water went, and see how farit went, and the different neighborhoods it affected’,”she says.

Then it occurred to her that other people might beinterested in touring the flood path on foot, too. So,along with friend and co-worker Kathleen Legg, she launched Run the Flood, a 7-mile run thatwill take participants along the perimeter of lastsummer’s flood.

The race will start in downtown, and then gothrough Time Check, past Taylor Elementary, into the Czech Village and through the Oak HillJackson neighborhood before returningdowntown. Alternatively, a 2.5-mile walk will takeparticipants through both sides of downtown andLittle Bohemia.

“My original intent was to see where the flood went, but we know that’s not feasible for everyone andwe really want this to be a community event, so wewanted to make sure that we had a component thatallowed everyone to feel like they could be a part ofit,” Kari says.

All proceeds from the race will be donated to theGreater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation tofund flood recovery efforts. Most, if not all, racecosts are being covered by sponsors from across thecommunity.

Kari is thrilled by thecommunity responseto the run, which isaffiliated with theDowntown District’sRIVERenaissance festivalrecognizing the one-yearanniversary of the flood, but she’s not surprisedby it. That communityexcitement and supportis exactly the sort ofthing that made her andher husband want tomove to Cedar Rapidsin the first place back

in the summer of 2007.

“It’s so easy to get involved in this community,” Karisays. “If you show up at one thing, you’re instantlywelcomed in and recruited to be a part of thisgroup, or do this thing. There are a lot of networkinggroups, a lot of church groups, a lot of ways to getconnected.”

Kari says those networking groups — particularlythe Eastern Iowa Human Resources Association, the

Professional and Technical Diversity Network andImpactCR (formerly Access Iowa), along with theconnections she’s made as Director of WorkforceInitiatives at Priority One made it possible to planRun the Flood with little prior event planning orfundraising experience.

Rebecca Jacobs, who coordinates Mercy MedicalCenter’s annual Especially for You Race AgainstBreast Cancer 5K, helped Kari and Kathleenput together a timeline for event planning andpromotion, while Stephanie Holub, marketingdirector for Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, helped them put together sponsorship packagesand pitches.

Meanwhile, Kari made the Run the Flood route aregular part of her training regimen.

“It’s a very familiar route for me now. As soon asthe weather started to get a little nicer this spring, there were kids playing out in their yards, and someof those kids are playing next to houses that haven’tbeen touched yet, and when I run by the kids, Ialways think to myself, ‘We’re running for you!,’ ” Karisays. “It’s such a sad situation; their neighborhoodsare gone right now.”

Throughout the run, markers on trees and telephonepoles will indicate how high the floodwaters rose, and maps, flood statistics, and photographs fromGazette photojournalists will be displayed along the2.5-mile walking route.

“This is going to be an educational event,” Kari says.“We see this as a way to celebrate and show theprogress that’s been made, but also to show the needthat’s left in the community and raise some money tosupport that need.”

Organizing the run itself has already been aneducational undertaking for Kari. She picked upevent planning and fundraising experience, ofcourse, but she also became even more familiarwith Cedar Rapids, discovering new neighborhoodsand seeing firsthand the spirit of volunteerismthat’s present here.

“I feel like there’s too much at stake to ever considerleaving this community now,” she says. “I feel like I’mreally a part of it now. I love it here.”

You can learn a lot at a family reunion, “Did you knowthat an antelope bloats mere minutes after shootingit?” “No! Tell me more!” It can be difficult to sift outthe quality information from the rest of the chatterbut this particular reunion proved to be fruitful.

Aunts Suzanne and Carol had the scoop. Thanks tothese two savvy travelers I learned all about a brandnew restaurant in Iowa City. The Chef’s Table, locatedin a great spot right next to the Englert Theatre, is anupscale French restaurant that is a mere few weeks old.

It’s definitely a dining experience. The interior is sleekand modern, accented by curving stone walls linedwith tables set with gleaming glass and silverware. The service is formal. I can’t say I’ve been to too manyrestaurants with a sommelier but I appreciated theattentiveness, and the patience, since I’m not quite awine connoisseur.

The menu has classic French dishes such as Foie Grasand Coq Au Vin among others. Dinner comes with achoice of soup or salad and bread is served one slice ata time so that each serving is fresh and warm.

We started with Shellfish Fines Herbs, savory chunksof king lobster, shaved vegetables and crème fraîche. Itwas cool and delectable.

My entree was Scallop Au Poivre, perfectly cookedscallops surrounded by fingerling potato and short ribtortellini. My husband chose Filet Mignon Frites. Yeah,I know, steak again but this one rated at the very topof his list.

Dessert was the Bitter Chocolate Terrine for me, andPassion Fruit Soufflé for him. Sure, we splurged andeach got our own dessert but we got swept up in themoment and everything looked so delightful. To quotemy husband, his soufflé was “a dessert that forces youto smile.”

We sat patting our bellies and reveling in the joys of afun and magical dinner. It was a bit on the expensiveside but I highly recommend The Chef’s Table whetheryou’re after a French cuisine experience or just a reallygreat experience.

RYAN TAYLOR

Nate Jiroutek, 34, Cedar RapidsChef at DC’s Riverwalk

All right Nate—what’s your fitin the world of DC’s Riverwalkand how long have you beenthere?I’m the Chef and Kitchen Manager.I’ve been with DC’s from the verybeginning, which is going on threemonths now.

How old were you whenintroduced to the worldof chop, butter and blend?I’ve been in and out of the chef/cooking world since I was 14. I’vealways had fun cooking and thought, why not get paid for doing whatyou love?

DC’s is the newest restaurantto open in downtown CR.What’s their flavor?DC’s is known for variety in menu— from the basic soup/salad/sandwichto the seafood and steak selection. The daily specials often reflect that

variety, and people appreciate theselection.

What’s the thing about cook-ing that makes you tick (goodtick, not bad)?Cooking is a window into othercultures — experiencing influenceand applying it where you can. I cancome up with something entirely newfrom simply adding a bit of my owncreativity. I compare it to signingyour name to a painting or sculptureyou’ve created.

What’s one item you’ll neverbe without in the kitchen?A chef should never be without his/her cornstarch.

Do you have a favorite dish toshare? It’s too hard to choose. I enjoycreating new things all the time, influenced from all over the world.

MUSICNOTES

Throw a bull-riding cowboy smack in themiddle of Paris and you get a hilariouscomic novel that will make you laugh outloud.

“Rowdy in Paris” by Tim Sandlin was trulyhilarious. It’s all about a not-so-great bullrider named Rowdy Talbot who at longlast wins a bull-riding competition. Hisjoy over the big win is cut short when hisprize buckle is stolen by a pair of Frenchwomen who helped Rowdy celebrate hisvictory. Rowdy heads to Paris to retrievehis coveted prize. Once Rowdy gets toParis, the adventures, surprises and non-

stop fun begins.Rowdy is amazedand flummoxed byFrench culture. Heis especially turnedoff by the factthat it takes fourespresso cups toequal one cupof coffee.

Throughout the novel, Rowdy reveals 12“Self Evident Truths.” These “Self EvidentTruths” offer a glimpse as to just howhilarious “Rowdy in Paris” truly is:

● The world over, cowboys are the envyof honest men and heart’s desire ofadventuresome women.● You can’t tell a virgin by her face.● You can’t hit every asshole you run into.● If you don’t stretch regular, the falls willbreak you.● You can never knock on wood too oftenin a tunnel.● The only thing worse than finding outyou were wrong when you prejudged aperson’s character is to find out you wereright.● If you sleep with enough people, sooneror later, you’ll fall for one of them.

● You only get a certain number ofknockouts in life, before you go away anddon’t make it all the way back.● Love is more important than saving yourculture.● Never make assumptions aboutforeign women.

Some readers may scorn “Rowdy in Paris”because it is not up to their literarystandards. But if you are looking fora good laugh, “Rowdy in Paris” is amust read.

THE REST OF THE STORY —www.greenbrierband.com

Matthew Kane has been playing music allof his life.

A native of Cedar Rapids who was raisedin Roanoke, Va., Kane moved back toCedar Rapids in 1990 to form a countryband not confined to only country music.

Named after his 1963 Chevy Corvairvan, Greenbrier is a country band withcredentials, opening for such countryacts as Sugarland, Lone Star and NealMcCoy as well as legendary performerslike Charlie Daniels Band, 38 Special andLynyrd Skynyrd.

While only a quarter of the songs areoriginals, the band is working to add newpieces every day.

“We pick cover songs that fit us,” Kanesaid. “If I can’t put my self in a song, ifI can’t live it, I don’t sing it. . . . We pushto make sure that every minute of ourshow is fun. At almost every show I havepeople come up and say that they don’tlike country music but they like what wedo. It makes me feel good when I knowI’m doing it right.”
