It seems there are two camps when it comes toHalloween. Those who plot their costumesfor months in advance, secretly cackling attheir cleverness and their friend’s oohs andaahs when they make their debut Oct.31. Then there are others, who will bescrambling for a last-minute costumeidea on All Hallow’s Eve.

Judging from the responses to our weeklyquestion on Page 3, most of the Hooplacrew counts themselves in the latter of the

two groups. If you’re like us, it’s Thursdayand you still don’t have a plan. That’s OK.We have a plan for you, even if we don’tfor ourselves.

Check out page 11 for two how-to’s with finalresults that will make your skin crawl. Go backto Halloween’s roots with these gory looks.Who needs sexy nurses or clever pop culturecostumes when you can have exposed arteries orburned flesh?

Not for you? Check out HooplaNow.com for moreHalloween goodies. There you’ll find stories on thisyear’s most popular costumes, Halloween eventsaround E. Iowa, maps and reviews of haunted housesand info on the real creepy places in the area.

If you’re pretty proud of your costume or end up with somegreat pics from this weekend, share them with us. After thisweekend you’ll be able to upload them to the site. And, ofcourse you can always share on Facebook atwww.Facebook.com/hooplanow

As for me. I fall squarely in the don’t-have-a-clue what I’mgoing to be category.

Halloween just isn’t my holiday. Thanksgiving, Christmas.I’m all over it.

But Halloween always feels like a test of my cleverness. And I fail every year. In college I dressed up as a hippie moreoften than I should admit. It was just so easy.

As an adult, my costumes haven’t been much moresuccessful. My favorite year was when my husband and Iand some friends went as the Scooby Doo gang, completewith our own live Scooby.

This year, I’m struggling to come up with a costume. I thinkI’m trying too hard.

Don’t be surprised if you see me Saturday with bellbottoms and a peace sign.

University of IowaHospitals andClinicsMany Iowa Citianstake for granted the UIHospitals and Clinics, which are consistentlyranked near the top inoverall care and havethe distinction of dozensof “onlys” to its creditboth in the state of Iowaand nationwide. Theyalso inspire volunteerismin thousands who givetheir own time andcompassion to others, making UIHC the bestplace to volunteer.

The Java HouseIf you’re looking for askinny mocha, a goodconversation with afriend or a place to studyor work quietly, the JavaHouse in downtownIowa City is your bestoption. There are fewbetter ways to spend abitterly cold winter nightthan inside with a warmdrink. Why not do sowith other cool peoplein a mellow, welcomingatmosphere? The loose-leaf teas really hit thespot, and did I mentionthe skinny mochas?

Sean Thompson, 27, Iowa CityEditorial Associate @ University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine

University of IowaAthleticsIf you’re looking forelite athletic displays, fervent fan involvementand jaw-droppingdrama, there’s no betterplace to spectate thana University of Iowaathletic event. Thefootball team providesarguably the best overallexperience, but don’tforget the other sports, both men’s and women’s.If you’re wondering whatto do on a Friday night, see if there’s a volleyballgame in town.

VineIowa City/Coralvilleis home to countlessquality eatingestablishments and avibrant night life. Butfew places combinethe two as well as TheVine. I’m partial to thedowntown location, where a youthful crowdcommingles withfamilies and couples. It’sa great place to catch agame with other fans onone of the well-placedtelevisions. Be sure totry the Crispy BuffaloChicken sandwich.

The peopleThe Corridor can besummed up in one word:amazing. My friends, myco-workers, the peopleI pass on the streetare intelligent, good-tempered and genuinelynice individuals. Theutter selflessnessdisplayed over a yearago by Corridor residentsduring the flood of 2008showed how incrediblethis community is. It wasawesome to be part of,and a major reason whyI came back to live inIowa City.

BABY YOU’RE GORE-GEOUS!BABY YOU’RE GORE-GEOUS!Get this wound-er-ful look if you’re gunning for a role in the next installment of “Saw” oryou just want to freak out your mom. Perfect it and, who knows, maybe you’ll find a wholenew second career as a haunted house ghoul or extra in one of the Zombie movies beingfilmed in Eastern Iowa these days. Since the trick to this look is plenty of blood, rememberthat most fake blood stains. So don’t wear anything that you don’t mind staining or gettingdirty. Hit up Goodwill or the Salvation Army to find old clothes for the night. You’ll need:

●Wound color makeup palette (Spirit Halloween)● Liquid latex (Spirit Halloween)●Black powder (Eye shadow is a good substitute. Find it for 99 cents at Sally Beauty)●Gel/scab blood (Spirit Halloween/Walmart)● Liquid blood (Spirit Halloween/Walmart)

How-to:●Start with a dark red color, covering the entire area that you want to look burned.Fade the edges out as you get to them.

● Then go over the area with a brighter red, starting in the center, dabbing it on indifferent spots to add texture and depth. Add a bit of yellow as well.

●Apply several thin layers of liquid latex to the area. The more layers you add, themore texture you will have. After this dries it will be clear. After it is dry, rub yourfinger over areas to tear holes in to the latex. You can also pinch the areas together sothe latex will stick together, making creases in the skin as well as easier tearing spots.

●Add additional dark red and some black coloring in to the new holes and tear spots. Also add gel/scab blood into these areas.

● To complete, dust with black powder and add blood.

Are you burning to make a splash at an annual Halloween party? Try this techniqueand go as an eerily real looking burn victim. Add some charred clothes for goodmeasure, if not good taste. Since when is Halloween PC anyway?

You’ll need:●Wound makeup color palette (SpiritHalloween)●Adhesive (Spirit Halloween)● Bite wound piece (Spirit Halloween)●Gel/scab blood (Spirit Halloween/Walmart)●Liquid blood (Spirit Halloween/ Walmart)

Note: Read all manufactures directions andwarnings.

How-to:●Start with the latex wound piece. Coverthe area of skin (we went with the neck, youcan choose whatever body part you want)where you want the wound with adhesive.Spray adhesive on the wound as well. Letthe adhesive dry a bit to get tacky. This willmake a better hold. Once tacky, affix thewound to the skin.

●Go around the edges of the wound with

liquid latex to blend the edges to your skin.

●Once the latex is clear and dry, add lightred coloring to the entire area to make itlook agitated and to blend the piece in. Addsome black coloring to the red in the wounditself to add depth.

●Add gel/scab blood to the wound andaround the edge of the piece to blend andhide the edges as needed.

● To finish, add liquid blood. Throats, headswounds and noses bleed the most. So feelfree to gore it up.

●Do keep in mind to read all manufacturesdirections and warnings as well. Andremember that most fake bloods stain, andto not wear anything that you don’t mindstaining pink, or getting dirty. The Goodwilland Salvation Army stores are good placesto find old clothes just for the character orthe night.

{BEHINDthebar Triple threat

Mandy, Melissa and Tiffany Recker, 26, Cedar RapidsBartender @ Cocktails & Company

Were the three of you hired allat once?Mandy: The three of us had worked at abar at Delhi and were planning to moveto Cedar Rapids. One of our regulars knewAngie (Angie Dahl, owner) at Cocktailsand suggested we chat with her about ajob. After chatting with her, the three ofus were offered jobs.

What are customer’s reactions tothe three of you? Do they pickup on the multiplicity or startquestioning their own sanity?Tiffany: When we first started, it tookpeople awhile to realize there were threeof us. Customers would come in and ifone of us was working they would order“the usual.” If we weren’t who theythought we were, we would have no

idea what a “regular” was. Some peoplegot offended we didn’t have their drinksdown, and we were just meeting them forthe first time!

What are some of the challengesthat come with working witheach other?Melissa: We used to live together sosometimes we would just need a breakfrom each other, but now it’s just greatto see them. They are my best friends. Wecan argue one minute then laugh about itthe next.

Do you ever get annoyed whensomeone gets you confused withanother sister?Tiffany: Most of the time you just letit go. You know it’s not intentional and

the non-regulars just don’tknow there are three of us.The funny part is if we don’tcorrect them and a regularis at the bar they will stop, get defensive and correct the customer. They’re more sensitive about it thanwe are!

What keeps you at Cocktailsand what’s the plan forHalloween this year?Tiffany: Definitely the customers. Theytake care of us. You get the occasionalstalkers but most of the time you makegreat friends.Melissa: Agreed. The customers. A lot of

the workers and customers are one bighappy family. Tips don’t hurt either.Mandy: Halloween at Cocktails is hugeevery year: costume contests, fun games.

What’s your specialty drink?Tiffany: My Jiggler Bomb that includesstrawberry Stoli and Blue Maui.Mandy: A Majestic with raspberry Stoli, vodka, Blue Maui, 7-Up, Red Bull andgrape Pucker.

Week Eight of the NFL season brings us to the StarliteRoom, 3300 First Ave. NE, in Cedar Rapids for a gamebetween the Atlanta Falcons and the New OrleansSaints. With the highflying Saints offense, this gameshould be very entertaining.

The Starlite Room is a Cedar Rapids landmark, so if youhaven’t experienced this place yet, you need to give ita shot. The Starlite is like your grandparent’s basement,a place which hasn’t been updated in the past 40 yearsand yet is oddly comfortable. Vinyl chairs and woodpaneling make up the bulk of the dated décor, but hightech enters the fray with fantastically large HDTVs.Eleven televisions dot the bar, with a few 55-inchershanging on the wall showing the game in full HD glory.

Since the Starlite is primarily a restaurant, you will finda ring of booths along the outside of the dining area, along with several large tables in the middle, so any sizegroup can be easily accommodated. TVs surround thedining area, so there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Thestaff was also more than happy to increase the volumeso we could hear the play by play. Starlite offers a pooltable, some video games and even a pinball machine toplay if the game gets boring.

The Starlite’s claim to fame, as it’s written on theirsign, is that they are “Home to the ½ lb Super Burger”.If you haven’t had one of these yet, you need to. It’sexactly how you want a cheeseburger to be: cheesy, juicy, greasy and delicious. If burgers aren’t your thing, you still have other options, since they offer a slewof sandwiches, some entree items and standard barappetizers like cheese sticks, jalapeno poppers and onionrings. All their sandwiches are a la carte, so go aheadand get something else beside fries with your sandwich.

The beer options are standard with domestic optionson tap and a variety of bottles and tall boys. Starlite isrunning a Monday Night Football special of $2.85 tallboys during the game. It’s not much of a deal, but I’ll

still take it.

The Starlite Room is a sleeper pick on the Monday Nightbar tour. The large TVs, good food and the large seatingareas make this a great spot to catch the game, despitethe dated décor. Don’t change, Starlite, I like you just asyou are.

I hate running. In my opinion, there isnothing fun about it, except the partwhere it’s over and I can take a nap. WhyI would agree to run a 5K on a cold, damp October morning can only beattributed to one thing – I could do itdressed as a pirate.

Yes, that’s right, a pirate.

The organizers of the Muddy Monster5/15K race at Seminole Valley Park hadfound my weakness. As much as I loatherunning, I love Halloween; and I couldn’tresist the lure of donning my favoritecostume and running along side the likesof Hansel and Gretel and Bret Michaels.

But half way through the race, I began toregret my decision.

Sweat was running down my temples,my heart was thumping furiously and mylungs were fighting to take in enough air.I hit a wall on the home stretch and wasstruggling to finish the final mile neededcomplete my first 5K.

Encouraging words from my runningpartner helped silence the voice in myhead saying, “Go ahead, walk a little, no

one will notice,” and I managed to keepup my pace for another mile.

“Arrrgh matey!” I cried out as I crossedthe finish line with a time of 35 minutesand 31 seconds.

Not exactly a record shattering pace, butfast enough to place 205th out of 279runners and burn a few calories. And sincethe Muddy Monster supports the VarietyChildren’s Charity my $26 registration feewould help provide services to hundreds

of Iowa children; a thought that helpedease my aching muscles.

So, if you are like me and runningreally isn’t your thing, find a race thatcombines it with something that is. Bringalong a running partner for support andencouragement — I would have walkedthe last mile if it wasn’t for mine — andkeep your eye on the big, inflatable finishline. Because once the running is out

of the way, the fun part begins, usuallywith free food and massages. If I hadthat to look forward to every time I ran,it wouldn’t have taken me two years tocomplete my nine-week Couch-to-5Krunning program.

Check out www.runningwall.com for asearchable calendar of races in Iowa.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.

At its core, “THE LITTLE GIANT OFABERDEEN COUNTY,” by TiffanyBaker is a book about beauty and ugliness.Born oversized (and killing her mother inthe process), Truly is the ugly duckling. Thecomparison to her beautiful sister SerenaJane makes this even clearer. When theirfather dies, the girls are split up and placedwith two very different families. Truly liveswith a sloppy, but happy, farm family, whereshe also learns to be happy in the gardensand among the animals. China-doll SerenaJane, lives with the minister’s family in town, where she’s pampered and preened.

The unusual Truly grows up to weigh morethan 400 pounds; Serena Jane marriesthe son of the town’s doctor after getting

pregnant right out of high school. This unionis short lived, and when Serena Jane leavesher husband (and new daughter), Truly movesin to take care of them. This is where Trulybegins to learn about some of the town’shistory, including a touch of witchcraft. She also learns the true nature of SerenaJane’s cruel husband. Witchcraft plus a cruelhusband equals lots of guilty fun.

In the meantime, Truly develops her ownrelationship with another town misfit whocan see her inner beauty. From an awkwardlylarge girl in boys’ overalls, to a confidentwoman, Truly is a perfect “good guy” to rootfor in this judgmental small town.

Critically acclaimed, and available on

every bookshelf, from Barnes and Noble toMenards, I actually thought this book was alittle weird with its circus of characters, andthe message — “Pretty girls can have difficultlives too; beauty is only skin deep” — a littletransparent.

However, the writer’s creativity seems toknow no bounds. From a magical quilt thattells the story Truly needs to hear, to therelationship Truly has with her sister andto her nearly-mute friend growing up, thecharacters and events are not likely onesyou’ve read about before. So in the end,I enjoyed reading it and watching Trulytriumph.

Yet there he was, walking in to meet me in thedim light of The Vine in Iowa City, looking nothinglike I had pictured the author of the ironicallyunapologetic “I’m Sorry” and “This is Hip Hop,” anode to early stylings in the genre that’s reminiscentof something Run DMC might have spun if theywere white and from the Midwest.

Mooney is a bit of a dead ringer for Vincent VanGogh, with a short brown beard and a recedinghairline. He’s less Slim Shady, and more SlimPickens in appearance.

He might not look the part, but he certainlysounds it.

He talks the talk too. His heroes are groups likeGrand Master Flash and Run DMC and, of course, the godfathers of hip hop.

“I think of myself a as being like a lot of the Biggie[Smalls], Toupac era. Music that actually meanssomething,” he says.

The 24-year-old Mooney has been crafting “musicthat means something” since he was all of 13 yearsold. He said they lyrics just flow out of him, almostwithout warning. He tells a story about one of his

first songs, written in high school where he wasabout to fall asleep on a school night when a singleline came to him that he didn’t want to forget. Hegot up to write it down and, hours later, he finallyfinished at 3:30 a.m., two hours before he had toget up for school.

His lyrics across his upcoming CD “The PuristForm” run the gamut from forgettable to catchyas hell, though he spends too much time rappingabout how far rap has fallen from its heyday. Ifnothing else, you can’t fault him for making hismessage unclear.

He deviates slightly on the wonderful track “I’mSorry,” in which he apologizes for, among otherthings, liking rap and not being black. The beat isamong the most polished on the disc, with the sortof funky sound you’d find on the soundtrack to“Shaft” or backing up a Tarantino picture. The effectis enjoyable and refreshing.

He’s had a hard time establishing himself in IowaCity, an area not exactly known for its embrace oflive hip hop acts from Iowa. But Mooney’s happykeeping his music and his career separate.

“It’s incredibly hard to make any money doing it. I

feel like I put pressure on it to pay my rent ratherthan for the music,” he says. “I don’t want it to bemy job and hate it.”

“It’s kind of the only way in my life I have toexpress myself. I’ve always loved the music, I’vealways been inspired to write. It just comes out ofme,” he adds. It’s the need to write and create hiphop that drives him, he says, above all else.
