1. Present the progress to date of HIA’s indoor air quality work
2. Help you understand how to get a program like this off the ground

Winter 2017 Air Quality Study
PM2.5 and Carbon monoxide◦ 65 paper surveys◦ 35 Homes monitored
Results of survey◦ Homes with wood stoves 20 years old and older had 1.5
times higher PM2.5
Conclusion◦ Replace or repair 20+ year old stoves
Project Description
Inspect and replace or repair wood stoves and chimney of 8 homes in Hoonah.
◦ Funding Source ◦ Partners◦ANTHC◦ EPA◦A1 Hearth and Stove
Identifying Potential Project Participants
How did we do it?Things to considerRemaining unbiased
Helping those that need it
Identifying Potential Project Participants
Let the data speak for it’s self We used the data and selected the top 20 oldest wood stoves
Actual Data and Top 20
“Objectively” Identifying Potential Project Participants
Set prioritySmall project scope

Developed a decision tree
Decision Tree
Identifying Potential Project
Participants
Priority 1◦ Had PM 2.5 reading well
above the EPA limit◦ Elder◦ Smoke effected health
issues
Note◦ One of the Priority 1
participants did not want a wood stove. He said he was getting rid of his wood stove and switching to a Toyo Stove.
Identifying Potential Project Participants
Priority 2◦Had PM 2.5 reading +- 20%
the EPA limit◦ Smoke effected health
issues
Note◦One of the priority 2
participants lived in Forest Service Housing.
Identifying Potential Project ParticipantsPriority 3◦Had PM 2.5 reading close to the
EPA limit
NoteWhat we found was all the P3 group where people that had done the paper survey but no monitoring data.

Finding a contractor
Knowing and following
policies for getting bids
Communicate your needs to
contractors
Choose the one that fits the scope of your project
the best
Finding a contractor
What did we looked for in a contractor◦ Local as possible◦ Access to ferry system
◦ Interested in building partnership
◦ Experienced◦ Excited to help us meet our
project goal
A1 Hearth and StoveWho did we choose and why◦ Local as possible (Juneau)◦ Interested in building partnership◦ Experienced◦ Excited to help us meet our project goal◦ The contractors are part owners and it showed in
their workmanship and professionalism.◦Main distributer of wood stoves
Pre Bid Inspections
A1 came to Hoonah and inspected each home’s wood stove and chimney.
They checked◦ Roof◦ Crawl space◦ Chimney◦ Wood stove◦ Hearth pad
Benefit: Most accurate way to estimate a bid, and will save time and money.
Bids
A1 wrote estimates for each home listing out the issues found, time and materials.
Benefit• Easy to estimate
total cost of project
• Gave us a ball park per home to keep the cost at
Agreements
Project description • Shows why we are doing this
Work to be preformed• Lists exactly what work will
be done with what parts
Agreement• Holds us accountable to
complete work listed only and is a commitment for participate in the next round of monitoring
Work Preformed
Work Preformed• Contractor filled out
work that was completed
Acknowledgment• Participant signed that
they where satisfied with work done and nothing more needs done

Woods stoves and installation
Things we learned…◦ Removal of wood stoves is no small task◦ Hoonah has major wood stove and
chimney issues that need addressed◦ One of the homes inspected had major
chimney fire post inspection◦ One home has multiple chimney fires
every winter, she was told not to use her stove again, or it would result in a chimney fire
◦ Every home work worked in had to be brought up to code as far as wood stove and chimney
Outreach and teaching
Before installation or repair◦ Go over issues in home◦ Talk bout PM2.5◦ Talk about project and purpose
After installation or repair◦ Go over work done◦ Contractor go over stove function with
home owners◦ Talk with home owners about best wood
burning practices (wood moisture)
Challenges and lessons learned
◦ Scheduling appointments◦Home Owners◦Wanting replacements◦Difficulty understanding
stove operation◦Weather (slippery roof)◦Age of some homes (WW2)◦Odd construction◦Had to make do
What’s next
Write a final report for this phase of the study
Another round of IAQ monitoring this winter.◦ Monitoring the homes we worked
on.◦ Monitoring more homes in HoonahAssist other communities with indoor air quality studies.
