Hession, AM, graduated from the University of Sydney in 1953, and obtained his MDS in 1960 and DDSc in 1977. He was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons as an Inaugural Fellow in 1965 and was elected a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He has been actively involved in Australian Dental Association Branch activities since 1966, was elected State President in 1971 and was a Federal Councillor for NSW from 1972-1984. After holding most offices on Federal Council, he was elected Federal President in 1980. Reg is well-known in world dentistry, having been an ADA delegate to FDI world congresses from 1976-82, during which time he served on a number of FDI commissions. Reg was Scientific Programme Director for the 61st FDI and 20th Australian Dental Congress held in Sydney in 1973 and has been elected Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 25th Australian Dental Congress to be held in Sydney in 1988. He is also a Councillor of the RACDS and is its current Honorary Secretary. He runs a private practice restricted to endodontics and restorative dentistry. Other dental activities include membership in various specialist societies and a number of Australian Government Dental Committees. He has lectured to many learned societies and congresses in Australia and overseas and has published numerous papers in the Australian and other Dental Journals. Reg has also been active in various sporting clubs, and in community affairs and charitable organizations. The award is richly deserved and a token recognition of the time and effort expended over the past years in the service of the profession and the community. Hugh D. Kennare, AM, retired from his post as Chief Executive of the South Australian Dental Service late in 1984. Hugh served in the RAAF during the 2nd World War and then undertook a dental course graduating BDS from the Adelaide Dental School in 1950. He has been a Clinical Tutor in the University of Adelaide Dental School and a Member of the Faculty of Dentistry for many years. He was actively involved in the ADA South Australian Branch and also served on the ADA Dental Health Services Committee. During his dental career, Hugh worked in private practice, in hospital practice and in the armed services. As the first Superintendent of the School Dental Service in South Australia, he was responsible for the professional development and management of the South Australian School Dental Service. The service is renowned for its emphasis on oral health education as well as treatment, and for its refusal to compromise quality of treatment for quantity. Hugh has published a number of papers over his professional life and has lectured to numerous dental groups. Community service activities include membership of the Board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, and it is for services to the community and to dentistry that Hugh has been honoured. Andrew E. Vern-Barnett, AM, MBE, graduated BDS(Sydney) in 1944 and subsequently obtained an MDS and a DDSc from that university. He is also a Fellow of the RACDS and a FICD. Andrew is a member of the ADA NSW Branch Council and was State Branch President in 1975. He is also a member of many professsional societies in NSW, has published numerous papers and lectured to dental groups both here and overseas. For many years he has been interested in organizations providing assistance to people with disabilities and was Foundation President of the Autistic Children's Association of NSW from 1966 to 1982 and Foundation President of the national body from 1971-1982. Andrew was awarded the MBE for community services in 1973, and this present award recognizes his services associated with the welfare of people with disabilities, particularly autistic children. Other interests include music, history, economics, political science and business management. Raymond B. Newland, AOM, AASA, FCIS, was honoured for his services to the community and to the dental profession. Ray joined the Australian Dental Association (NSW Branch) in 1955 when he was appointed its Secretary and he retired in 1982 as Chief Executive Officer. At this time, in recognition of his long services, the Branch elected him an Honorary Member. In the early stages of establishment of the Journal Ray Newland was appointed Business Manager, a task he undertook for more than twenty years. From 1966 until his retirement he was a Member of the Western Shires (NSW) Dental Committee and he also served on the Dental Technicians and the Dental Assistants and Secretaries Conciliation Committees. In addition to those activities he was a foundation member of the Society of Association Executives of NSW and its President in 1975. He is actively interested in community welfare organiza- tions and is Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Palliative Care Association of New South Wales.
