Fall 2017

Dear Colleagues:

Best wishes to all members of the CJMEA for a successful fall season. This notice serves as a reminder/introduction regarding the Honors Symphonic Band of CJMEA.

This January, we are extremely fortunate to have another one of the regions’ top music educators, Dr. William Berz, from Rutgers University. Dr. Berz is the founding conductor of this ensemble and we are delighted that he can return once again.

High schools in Region II are able to participate in a program that seeks to provide an outlet for your dedicated musicians. The Honors Symphonic Band will be created from director nominations—not through auditions. If you have some talented and dedicated musicians who did not place in the Region Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble auditions, but are otherwise passionate musicians—by all means nominate them! For balance purposes, not all students nominated can be accepted into the group, however, all schools that send an application will be represented!

The enclosed nomination sheet will need to be emailed by Friday, December 15, 2017. Directors will still have the opportunity to find out if their students are accepted into region band or orchestra before sending in the nomination form. Students who are accepted into the region band or orchestra are not eligible for this ensemble. The final rehearsal and concert will be held in the auditorium at Sayreville War Memorial High School.

Sincerely,

Paul T. Caruso [email protected]

1. To be eligible, students must be in grades 9–12 and must be a member of their school band or orchestra in Region II. Participating music instructors must be paid members of NAFME (MENC). If membership or verification of membership is needed, please contact NAFME at 1-800-336-3768 or email [email protected] and have NAFME email verification to the nomination chairperson.

2. Home School students are only eligible to participate if they are sponsored by the band/orchestra director from their hometown or their private music teacher. The sponsoring teacher must be a member of NAFME and be able to verify the performance ability of the student.

3. The acceptance fee is $15.00 per student. Acceptance fee will be collected at the first rehearsal. Payment should be made in CASH.

4. Flutes, saxophones, and percussionists will be accepted on a seniority basis unless otherwise indicated by director. If a director prefers an underclassman on a given instrument, he/she should indicate this preference with an asterisk (*).

5. No student will be permitted to participate unless the application has the proper signatures. If the school teacher agrees to allow another NAFME qualified music teacher to sign for the student, the student’s school teacher and administrator must still sign, thereby indicating their knowledge of this situation. Copies of valid NAFME cards for both teachers must be included with the nomination form in the last page of this packet. THE NAFME CARD MUST HAVE A 12/2017 EXPIRATION DATE OR LATER.

6. It is the director’s responsibility to reinforce the schedule and attendance policy with all applicants. Please review the schedule with your students and remind them that there are no unexcused absences. A school performance is the only excused absence from a rehearsal. All absences will be checked against your school’s sports and academic competition calendars

7. Email the following items to [email protected] by December 15, 2017 -- One copy of the nomination form (page 4) and a copy of your NAFME card.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Students must attend all rehearsals in their entirety and the performance during the times indicated. Because there is limited rehearsal time for the high school instrumental ensembles, any absence may result in removal from the group. Removal from an ensemble will result in loss of CJMEA eligibility for the following year. Please check the dates and times listed before you apply.

NOTE: Students may not miss more than one rehearsal for any reason. In addition, they MUST attend the full-dress rehearsal in order to participate. The only valid reason for a missed rehearsal is a concert with a school ensemble.
