HONORING
G L S E N R ES P ECT AWA R DS
The Respect Awards are GLSEN’s most important fundraising event of the year. Thank you to every honoree and sponsor for helping make life better for LGBTQ students.
— GLSEN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ELIZA BYARD, PHD
G L S E N R ES P ECT AWA R DS
I’m proud to use my voice to help further the fight for equality. I’m proud to have created a safe, positive community around me online which assists in that battle. I’m proud to show everyone it’s okay to be different. It’s okay for you to be you.— CONNOR FRANTA 2016 GLSEN RESPECT AWARDS – LOS ANGELES HONOREE
A lot of people want to get involved, but they don’t know how to start. GLSEN Days of Action give us something to organize around and look forward to. We can prepare so much in advance. Last year, we had over 70 students, from 6th to 12th grade, participating in our activities. And the GSA has become a vehicle for us to advocate for the LGBTQ community on campus.

Since its founding in 1990, GLSEN has transformed
the lives of millions of LGTBQ youth in tens of thousands of K–12 schools nationwide.
GLSEN helped ban “ex-gay” reparative therapy
in schools, lead the national Safe Schools
anti-bullying movement, and has won significant
protections for transgender students in communities
across the country.
Today, we must protect those victories—including
defending against 23 states’ efforts to roll
back trans students’ rights, via lawsuits against
the federal government. And we must continue to
implement GLSEN’s four school-based supports,
proven to make life better for LGBTQ students
and create a culture of respect for all. They are:
1. Visible, supportive educators2. Comprehensive policies3. LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum and resources
4. Student clubs, like GSAs, that support LGBTQ
youth and create inclusive schools
When those four supports are in place, LGBTQ students
do enormously better:
• Average GPA up from 2.8 to 3.3• Absenteeism down from 61% to 16.9%• Likelihood of not considering going to college
down from 9.5% to 1.7%• Less depression and risk-taking behavior, higher
self-esteem and graduation rates
Between now and 2020, GLSEN is implementing a $40 million plan to scale up locally—increasing the number of
schools and communities with each of the four supports. In
the next four years, we will:
Inspire 625,000 more educators to be visibly
LGBTQ supportive (+10%)
e. Protect 500,000 more LGBTQ students with
LGBTQ-inclusive school policies (+20%)
f. Teach 3.5 million more students about LGBTQ
history and health (+7%)
g. Help found 3,000 new student-led GSAs (+10%)
The GLSEN Respect Awards raises money to achieve this
vision by showcasing the work of students, educators,
individuals, and corporations. Each honoree and sponsor is
an exemplary role model, making a significant impact on the
lives of LGBTQ youth.
I think it’s part of our obligation as a society to make sure everybody is treated fairly and our kids are all loved and protected.
— PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, MAY 16, 2016 DISCUSSING PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER STUDENTS
GLSEN is a leader in both the global movement for LGBTQ equality and in the whole-child movement for educational equity. GLSEN experts, such as GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard, current middle and high school students who are part of our National Student Council, GLSEN Chapter leaders, and GLSEN affiliated educators and parents, are regularly sought after by writers and producers for information and commentary on topics affecting LGBTQ youth.
