message from the deanT.S. Eliot may have thought that “April is the cruelest month,” but for Honors students it is also a remarkably productive time. In fact, as graduation draws near, many seniors (as well as more than a few juniors) have been busy completing their Honors Projects, while underclassmen of all majors continue to do the kind of excellent academic and creative work for which UCM Honors students are justifiably well-known. I am always deeply impressed—and humbled—by the range and quality of work done by our students, who manage to take learning to a greater degree in so many ways.

It was truly a pleasure to see the fruits of many of those efforts presented at our annual Scholar’s Symposium and Creative Achievement Day earlier this month. I want to commend all those Honors students whose work was accepted for presentation at the Symposium, and thank President Ambrose, Provost Curtis, and Vice Provost Bax for their opening words of inspiration and encouragement.

I would also like to offer a special note of thanks to Dr. Jennifer Carson, Coordinator of Undergraduate Research and External Scholarships. It was Dr. Carson’s vision, leadership, and organizational skills that fostered the reinvigoration of this annual event, which saw 97 undergraduates and numerous faculty from across the academic colleges engaged in critical thinking and informed dialogue.

As always, it was also a pleasure to see so many of you in attendance at this year’s annual HCSA Barbecue. We had a great time—and some great food—as we recognized our graduating seniors and elected a new HCSA Executive Board. On behalf of The Honors College, I want to thank our outgoing HCSA Board members for their service, and to welcome the newly elected leadership: Sarah Ragsdale (President), Beni Chikuru (Vice President), Laurie Luckritz (Secretary), Molly Olten (Public Relations Chair), Bailey Bockenstedt (Social Chair), Alix Calon (Volunteer Services Chair), Kaitlyn Jantzen (Educational Development Chair). With such an outstanding cast of new student leaders The Honors College can look forward to another exciting year of student engagement on campus and in the community.

Many Honors students will be graduating on May 9th. Please be aware that the schedule of UCM’s commencement ceremonies has been modified for this Spring. More information is available online here: http://www.ucmo.edu/registrar/graduation/questions.cfm. Please note that The Honors College will host a reception for its students on Friday, May 8th, from 4:00-6:00pm in Union 237 A&B, and on Saturday, May 9th, from 10:00am-2:00pm, again in Union 237 A&B. This year’s completed Honors Projects will be displayed at both receptions. This event is free and open to the public, parents, relatives, and faculty.

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate our graduating seniors on their noteworthy careers at UCM, and to wish them much continued success in their future endeavors. Among our many outstanding graduates, I want especially to thank Anna Robb, Editor and Designer of "Honorably Speaking", for her exceptional work on the newsletter and in The Honors College office.

To those of you who are not graduating this spring, I wish you a summer of rest, relaxation, and productivity. As you know, The Honors College Office is open all year, so please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Of course those of you who will be around this summer are encouraged to drop in and let us know how your summer is going. We look forward to seeing you.

The University of Central Missouri Alumni Association has become the first higher education organization in the state of Missouri to partner with Evisors to implement an online career-advising network that potentially can link 86,000 UCM alumni with 13,000 current students.

Launching the latest addition to their alumni and student engagement campaign, Red Connect, the UCM Alumni Association is encouraging alumni and students to register online to join the new Alumni Advisor Network and start connecting. The three-minute process is made easier by allowing alumni to import their LinkedIn profiles.

The Alumni Advisor Network uses Evisors, a career services platform that allows job seekers to access personal career coaching and webinars from advisors with relevant professional backgrounds. Once alumni connect with students through the network, they can give career advice, critique resumes and set up mock interviews. The Alumni Advisor Network is privacy-protected and does not share personal contact information. Phone consultations occur through conference numbers and written messages are routed through the system.

How It Works:• Sign up with your name, email address and graduation year at ucmo.edu/alumnetwork

• Search for alumni based on their company, industry or job function.

• Select an alumnus you would like to connect with based on his or her profile and availability.

• Connect via phone or email for a career conversation, mock interview or resume critique.

Questions?Contact Traci Via, director of alumni relations, at [email protected].

A Message from your HCSA President Honors Students, As the academic year comes to an end, I want to take a moment to wish the graduating seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors whether their next journey in life be an internship, dream job or moving on to graduate or professional school. The newly elected HCSA Executive Board is excited to get things started and has many new ideas that will be discussed over the summer. I want to thank you for reelecting me as your President and I look forward to another great year! You can expect to see many fun activities planned for the first few weeks of the Fall Semester such as volunteering for Mule Haul, having breakfast with President Ambrose, a Meet and Greet for incoming freshman and a General Meeting before the end of August. Until then, good luck on finals and have a wonderful summer break!

Sincerely, Sarah Ragsdale
