Piera ChenCoordinating author, Hong Kong Island: Central, Hong Kong Island: The Peak & the Northwest, Kowloon, Macau, Day Trips from Hong Kong Born to a Shanghainese father and a Pekingese mother in Hong Kong, Piera studied literature at Pomona College and works as a writer in her native city. She currently divides her time among Hong Kong, Běijīng, Vancouver, and various exotic holiday destinations, real and imagined. Piera’s acquaintance with southern China began
when she paid visits to relatives in Guǎngdōng and Macau as a child. It was during these sojourns that she learnt how to coax away a water leech and developed a taste for Portuguese cheeses. Piera has written over half a dozen titles for Lonely Planet.
Emily MatcharHong Kong Island: Wan Chai & the Northeast, Hong Kong Island: Aberdeen & the South, New Territories, Outlying Islands Emily Matchar has contributed to some two dozen Lonely Planet guides, and writes for newspapers and magazines all over the world. A native of North Carolina in the southern USA, she currently lives near the top of the world’s longest outdoor escalator in Hong Kong.

Our Writers
Our StoryA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.
Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.
Top ItinerariesDay OneThe Peak & the Northwest (p85)
M Catch the legendary Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak for stunning views of
the city. Then descend and walk to Sheung Wan, checking out the shopping options along the way. Stop at Man Mo Temple for a taste of history and explore the burgeoning community on Tai Ping Shan Street.
Kowloon (p138)
R Take the Star Ferry to Kowloon. En-joy the views along Tsim Sha Tsui
East Promenade and savour your stroll to the Museum of History where you’ll get some context to your day’s impressions.

N After dinner in Tsim Sha Tsui, take the metro to Soho for drinks and
dancing.
