AllahsProphetYaqubreceivestheGrievousNews

AllahsProphetYaqubrepeatedtohischildrenthesamewordshesaidtothemwhentheybroughtfalsebloodonYusufsshirt,Nay,butyourownselveshavebeguiledyouintosomething.Sopatienceismostfitting(forme).MuhammadbinIshaqsaid,WhentheywentbacktoYaqubandtoldhimwhathappened,hedidnotbelievethemandthoughtthatthiswasarepetitionofwhattheydidtoYusuf.Sohesaid,Nay,butyourownselveshavebeguiledyouintosomething.Sopatienceismostfittingforme.Somesaidthat



sincethisnewdevelopmentcameafterwhattheydidbefore[toYusuf],theyweregiventhesamejudgementtothislaterincidentthatwasgiventothemwhentheydidwhattheydid[toYusuf].ThereforeYaqubsstatementhereisbefitting.Nay,buttheirownselveshavebeguiledyouintosomething.Sopatienceismostfitting(forme).

HethenbeggedAllahtobringbackhisthreesons:Yusuf,BinyaminandRubiltohim.(AtTabari16:214)RubilhadremainedinEgyptawaitingAllahsdecisionabouthiscase,eitherhisfatherspermissionorderinghimtogobackhome,ortosecurethereleaseofhisbrotherinconfidence.ThisiswhyYaqubsaid,MaybeAllahwillbringthem(back)alltome.Truly,He!OnlyHeisAllKnowing.inmydistress,theAllWise,inHisdecisionsandthedecreeandpreordainmentHeappoints.hesaidnext,Andheturnedawayfromthemandsaid:AlasmygriefforYusuf!HeturnedwayfromhischildrenandrememberedhisoldgriefforYusuf,AlasmygriefforYusuf!thenewgrief,losingBinyaminandRubil,renewedhisoldsadnessthathekepttohimself.AbdurRazzaqnarratedthatAthThawrisaidthatSufyanAlAsurisaidthatSaidbinJubayrsaid,Onlythisnation[thefollowingofprophetMuhammad,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim]weregivenAlIstirja[SayingToAllahwebelongandtoHimshallbeourreturn.]HaveyounotheardofthestatementofYaqub,peacebeuponhim,AlasmygriefforYusuf!Andhelosthissightbecauseofthesorrowthathewassuppressing?(AbdurRazzaq2:227)Yaqubsuppressedhissorrowanddidnotcomplaintoacreatedbeing,accordingtoQatadahandotherscholars.(AtTabari16:216)AdDahhakalsocommented,Yaqubwasaggrieved,sorrowfulandsad.(AtTabari16:218)

Yaqubschildrenfeltpityforhimandsaid,whilefeelingsorrowandcompassion,ByAllah!YouwillneverceaserememberingYusufYouwillkeeprememberingYusuf,untilyoubecomeweakwitholdage,untilyourstrengthleavesyou,oruntilyoubeofthedead.Theysaid,ifyoucontinuelikethis,wefearforyouthatyoumightdieofgrief,Hesaid:IonlycomplainofmygriefandsorrowtoAllah.Whentheysaidthesewordstohim,Yaqubsaid,Ionlycomplainofmygriefandsorrow,fortheafflictionsthat



struckme,toAllahalone,andIknowfromAllahthatwhichyouknownot.IanticipatefromAllaheachandeverytypeofgoodness.IbnAbbascommentedonthemeaningof,andIknowfromAllahthatwhichyouknownot.ThevisionthatYusufsawistruthfulandAllahwillcertainlymakeittrue.(AtTabari16:227)

87.Omysons!GoyouandinquireaboutYusufandhisbrother,andnevergiveuphopeofAllahsmercy.CertainlynoonedespairsofAllahsmercy,exceptthepeoplewhodisbelieve.

88.Then,whentheyentereduntohim,theysaid:OAziz!Ahardtimehashitusandourfamily,andwehavebroughtbutpoorcapital,sopayusfullmeasureandbecharitabletous.Truly,

Allahdoesrewardthecharitable.}

YaqubordersHisChildrentoinquireaboutYusufandHisBrother

AllahstatesthatYaqub,peacebeuponhim,orderedhischildrentogobackandinquireaboutthenewsofYusufandhisbrotherBinyamin,inagoodmanner,notasspies.Heencouragedthem,deliveredtothemthegoodnewsandorderedthemnottodespairofAllahsmercy.HeorderedthemtonevergiveuphopeinAllah,nortoeverdiscontinuetrustinginHimforwhattheyseektoaccomplish.HesaidtothemthatonlythedisbelievingpeopledespairofAllahsmercy.

YusufsBrothersstandbeforeHim

Allahsaidnext,Then,whentheyentereduntohim,whentheywentbacktoEgyptandentereduponYusuf,theysaid:OAziz!Ahardtimehashitusandourfamily,becauseofseveredroughtsandthescarcityoffood,andwehavebroughtbutpoorcapitalmeans,webroughtmoneyforthefoodwewanttobuy,butitisnotsubstantial,accordingtoMujahid,AlHasanandseveralothers.(AtTabari16:238)Allahsaid



thattheysaidnext,sopayusfullmeasuremeaning,inreturnforthelittlemoneywebrought,giveusthefullmeasurethatyougaveusbefore.IbnMasudreadthisAyahinawaythatmeans,Sogivethefullloadonouranimalsandbecharitablewithus.(ibid)IbnJurayjcommented,Sobecharitabletousbyreturningourbrothertous.(AtTabari16:243)AndwhenSufyanbinUyaynahwasaskediftheSadaqah(charity)wasprohibitedforanyProphetbeforeourProphet,hesaid,HaveyounotheardtheAyah,sopayusfullmeasureandbecharitabletous.Truly,Allahdoesrewardthecharitable.IbnJarirAtTabari(AtTabari16:242)collectedthisstatement.

{89.Hesaid:DoyouknowwhatyoudidwithYusufandhisbrother,whenyouwereignorant?

90.Theysaid:AreyouindeedYusuf?Hesaid:IamYusuf,andthisismybrother.Allahhasindeedbeengracioustous.HewhohasTaqwa,andispatient,thensurely,Allahmakesnotthe

rewardofthegooddoerstobelost.

91.Theysaid:ByAllah!IndeedAllahhaspreferredyouaboveus,andwecertainlyhavebeensinners.

92.Hesaid:NoreproachonyouthisdaymayAllahforgiveyou,andHeistheMostMercifulofthosewhoshowmercy!}

YusufRevealsHisTrueIdentitytoHisbrothersandForgivesThem

Allahsays,whenYusufsbrotherstoldhimabouttheafflictionsandhardship,andshortagesinfoodtheysufferedfromintheaftermathofthedroughtthatstruckthem,andherememberedhisfathersgriefforlosinghistwochildren,hefeltcompassion,pityandmercyforhisfatherandbrothers.Hefeltthisway,especiallysincehewasenjoyingkingship,authorityandpower,sohecriedandrevealedhistrueidentitytothemwhenheasked



them,DoyouknowwhatyoudidwithYusufandhisbrother,whenyouwereignorant?meaning,whenyouseparatedbetweenYusufandhisbrother,whenyouwereignorantHesaid,Whatmadeyoudothisisyourignoranceofthetremendoussinyouwereabouttocommit.Itappears,andAllahknowsbest,thatYusufrevealedhisidentitytohisbrothersonlythenbyAllahscommand,justashehidhisidentityfromtheminthefirsttwomeetings,byAllahscommand.Whentheafflictionbecameharder,AllahsentHisrelieffromthataffliction,justasHesaidHedoes,Verily,alongwitheveryhardshipisrelief.Verily,alongwitheveryhardshipisrelief.(94:56)ThisiswhentheysaidtoYusuf,AreyouindeedYusuf?,inamazement,becausetheyhadbeenmeetinghimformorethantwoyearswhileunawareofwhohereallywas.Yet,heknewwhotheywereandhidthisnewsfromthem.Therefore,theyaskedinastonishment,AreyouindeedYusufHesaid:IamYusuf,andthisismybrotherYusufsaidnext,Allahhasindeedbeengracioustous.bygatheringustogetherafterbeingseparatedallthistime,Verily,hewhohasTaqwa,andispatient,thensurely,Allahmakesnottherewardofthegooddoerstobelost.Theysaid:ByAllah!IndeedAllahhaspreferredyouaboveus.TheyaffirmedYusufsvirtueabovethem,beingblessedwithbeauty,conduct,richness,kingship,authorityand,aboveall,prophethood.Theyadmittedtheirerrorandacknowledgedthattheymadeamistakeagainsthim,Hesaid:Noreproachonyouthisday.Hesaidtothem,Therewillbenoblameforyoutodayoradmonishment,andIwillnotremindyouaftertodayofyourerroragainstme.HethenmultipliedhisgenerositybyinvokingAllahforthemformercy,MayAllahforgiveyou,andHeistheMostMercifulofthosewhoshowmercy!

{93.Gowiththisshirtofmine,andcastitoverthefaceofmyfather,hisvisionwillreturn,andbringtomeallyourfamily.

94.Andwhenthecaravandeparted,theirfathersaid:IdoindeedsensethesmellofYusuf,ifonlyyouthinkmenotsenile).

95.Theysaid:ByAllah!Certainly,youareinyouroldDalal(error).}



YaqubfindstheScentofYusufinhisShirt!

Yusufsaid,Takethisshirtofmine,andcastitoverthefaceofmyfather,hisvisionwillreturn,becauseYaqubhadlosthissightfromexcessivecrying,andbringtomeallyourfamily.allthechildrenofYaqub.AndwhenthecaravandepartedfromEgypt,theirfathersaid,Yaqub,peacebeuponhim,saidtothechildrenwhoremainedwithhim,IdoindeedfeelthesmellofYusuf,ifonlyyouthinkmenotsenile.,exceptthatyoumightthinkmesenilebecauseofoldage.AbdurRazzaqnarratedthatIbnAbbassaid,Whenthecaravandeparted[fromEgypt],awindstartedblowingandbroughtthescentofYusufsshirttoYaqub.Hesaid,IdoindeedfeelthesmellofYusuf,ifonlyyouthinkmenotsenile.Hefoundhisscentfromadistanceofeightdaysaway!(AbdurRazzaq2:329)

sinners.

98.Hesaid:IwillaskmyLordforforgivenessforyou,verily,He!OnlyHeistheOftForgiving,theMostMerciful.}

YahudhabringsYusufsShirtandGoodNews

IbnAbbasandAdDahhaksaidgoodnewsmeansinformation.MujahidandAsSuddisaidthatthebearerofgoodnewswasYahudha,sonofYaqub.(AtTabari16:258)AsSuddiadded,Hebroughtit(Yusufsshirt)becauseitwashewhobroughtYusufsshirtstainedwiththefalseblood.Sohelikedtoerasethaterrorwiththisgoodact,bybringingYusufsshirtandplacingitonhisfathersface.Hisfatherssightwasrestoredtohim.(AtTabari16:259)Yaqubsaidtohischildren,DidInotsaytoyou,IknowfromAllahthatwhichyouknownot,thatIknowthatAllahwillreturnYusuftomeandthat,IdoindeedfeelthesmellofYusuf,ifonlyyouthinkmenotsenile.

YusufsBrothersFeelSorryandRegretful

ThisiswhenYusufsbrotherssaidtotheirfather,withhumbleness,Oourfather!Askforgiveness(fromAllah)foroursins,indeedwehavebeensinners.Hesaid:IwillaskmyLordforforgivenessforyou,verily,He!OnlyHeistheOftForgiving,theMostMerciful.andHeforgivesthosewhorepenttoHim.AbdullahbinMasud,IbrahimAtTaymi,AmrbinQays,IbnJurayjandseveralotherssaidthatProphetYaqubdelayedfulfillingtheirrequestuntilthelatterpartofthenight.(AtTabari16:262)

{99.Then,whentheycameinbeforeYusuf,hetookhisparentstohimselfandsaid:EnterEgypt,ifAllahwills,insecurity.



100.Andheraisedhisparentstothe`Arshandtheyfelldownbeforehimprostrate.Andhesaid:Omyfather!Thisistheinterpretationofmydreamaforetime!MyLordhasmadeitcometrue!Hewasindeedgoodtome,whenHetookmeoutoftheprison,andbroughtyou(allhere)outofthebedouinlife,afterShaytanhadsownenmitybetweenmeandmybrothers.Certainly,my

LordistheMostCourteousandKinduntowhomHewills.Truly,He!OnlyHeistheAllKnowing,theAllWise.}

YusufWelcomesHisParentsHisDreamComesTrue

AllahstatesthatYaqubwenttoYusufinEgypt.Yusufhadaskedhisbrotherstobringalloftheirfamily,andtheyalldepartedtheirareaandleftKana`antoEgypt.WhenYusufreceivednewsoftheirapproachtoEgypt,hewentouttoreceivethem.ThekingorderedtheprincesandnotablepeopletogooutinthereceivingpartywithYusuftomeetAllahsProphetYaqub,peacebeuponhim.ItissaidthatthekingalsowentoutwiththemtomeetYaqub.Yusufsaidtohisfamily,aftertheyentereduntohimandhetookthemtohimself,andsaid:EnterEgypt,ifAllahwills,insecurity.Hesaidtothem,enterEgypt,meaning,resideinEgypt,andadded,ifAllahwills,insecurity,inreferencetothehardshipandfaminethattheysuffered.Allahsaidnext,andhetookhisparentstohimself

AsSuddiandAbdurRahmanbinZaydbinAslamsaidthathisparentswerehisfatherandmaternalaunt,(AtTabari16:267)ashismotherhaddiedlongago.(AtTabari16:269)MuhammadbinIshaqandIbnJarirAtTabarisaid,Hisfatherandmotherwerebothalive.IbnJariradded,Thereisnoevidencethathismotherhaddiedbeforethen.Rather,theapparentwordsoftheQurantestifythatshewasalive.Thisopinionhastheapparentandsuitablemeaningthatthisstorytestifiesto.(AtTabari16:267)

Allahsaidnext,AndheraisedhisparentstoAlArshheraisedthemtohisbedsteadwherehesat,accordingtoIbnAbbas,Mujahidandseveralothers.(ibid)Allahsaid,andtheyfelldownbeforehim



prostrate.Yusufsparentsandbrothersprostratedbeforehim,andtheywereelevenmen,Andhesaid:Omyfather!ThisistheTawil(interpretation)ofmydreamaforetime,inreferencetothedreamthathenarratedtohisfatherbefore,Isaw(inadream)elevenstars

InthelawsoftheseandpreviousProphets,itwasallowedforthepeopletoprostratebeforethemenofauthority,whentheymetthem.ThispracticewasallowedinthelawofAdamuntilthelawofIsa,peacebeuponthem,butwaslaterprohibitedinourlaw.IslammadeprostrationexclusivelyforAllahAlone,theExaltedandMostHonored.TheimplicationofthisstatementwascollectedfromQatadahandotherscholars.(AtTabari16:269)

WhenMuadhbinJabalvisitedtheShamarea,[GreaterSyria,whichnowcomprisesSyria,Lebanon,PalestineandJordan]hefoundthemprostratingbeforetheirpriests.Whenhereturned(toAlMadinah),heprostratedbeforetheMessengerofAllah,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,whoaskedhim,

Whatisthis,O,Muadh?

Muadhsaid,Isawthattheyprostratebeforetheirpriests.However,you,OMessengerofAllah,deservemoretobeprostratedbefore.TheMessenger,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,said,

IfIweretoorderanyonetoprostratebeforeanyoneelse(amongthecreation),Iwouldhaveorderedthewifetoprostratebeforeherhusbandbecauseoftheenormityofhisrightonher.(IbnMajah1:595)

Therefore,thispracticewasallowedinpreviouslaws,aswestated.Thisiswhythey(Yaqubandhiswifeandelevensons)prostratedbeforeYusuf,whosaidatthattime,Omyfather!ThisistheTawilofmydreamaforetime!MyLordhasmadeitcometrue!usingtheword,Tawil,todescribewhatbecameofthematter,lateron.AllahsaidinanotherAyah,AwaittheyjustforitsTawilOntheDaytheeventisfinallyfulfilled,meaning,ontheDayofJudgementwhattheywerepromisedofgoodorevilwillsurely



cometothem.Yusufsaid,MyLordhasmadeitcometrue!mentioningthatAllahblessedhimbymakinghisdreamcometrue,Hewasindeedgoodtome,whenHetookmeoutoftheprison,andbroughtyou(allhere)outofthebedouinlife,outofthedesert,fortheylivedabedouinlifeandraisedcattle,accordingtoIbnJurayjandothers.(AtTabari16:276)HealsosaidthattheyusedtoliveintheArava,GhurareaofPalestine,inGreaterSyria.Yusufsaidnext,afterShaytanhadsownenmitybetweenmeandmybrothers.Certainly,myLordistheMostCourteousandKinduntowhomHewills.forwhenAllahwillssomething,Hebringsforthitsreasonsandelementsofexistence,thenwillsitintoexistenceandmakesiteasytoattain,Truly,He!OnlyHeistheAllKnowing.whatbenefitsHisservants,theAllWise.inHisstatements,actions,decrees,preordainmentandwhatHechoosesandwills.

53.AndIfreenotmyself(fromtheblame).Verily,theselfisinclinedtoevil,exceptwhenmyLordbestowsHismercy(uponwhomHewills).Verily,myLordisOftForgiving,Most

Allahnarratestousthatwhenthekingwasconveyedtheinterpretationofhisdream,helikedYusufsinterpretationandfeltsurethatitwastrue.HerealizedthevirtueofProphetYusuf,recognizedhisknowledgeintheinterpretationofdreamsandvaluedhisgoodconductwithhissubjectsinhiscountry.Thekingsaid,Bringhimtome.Releasehimfromprisonandbringhimtome.WhenthekingsemissarycametoYusufandconveyedthenewsofhisimminentrelease,Yusufrefusedtoleavetheprisonuntilthekingandhissubjectsdeclarehisinnocenceandtheintegrityofhishonor,denouncingthefalseaccusationthatthewifeofthe`Azizmadeagainsthim.Hewantedthemtoknowthatsendinghimtoprisonwasanactofinjusticeandaggression,notthathecommittedanoffensethatwarrantedit.Hesaid,Returntoyourlord(i.e.king)

TheSunnahofourProphetpraisedProphetYusufandassertedhisvirtues,honor,elevatedrankandpatience,mayAllahspeaceandblessingsbeonhim.TheMusnadandtheTwoSahihsrecordedthatAbuHurayrahsaidthattheMessengerofAllah,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,said,

WearemoreliabletobeindoubtthanIbrahimwhenhesaid,MyLord!ShowmehowYougivelifetothedeadAndmayAllahsendHismercyonLut!Hewishedtohavepowerfulsupport!IfIweretostayinprisonforsuchalongtimeasYusufdid,Iwouldhaveacceptedtheoffer.(Ahmad2:326,FathAlBari8:216,Muslim1:133)



InanothernarrationcollectedbyAhmadfromAbuHurayrah,theProphet,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,saidaboutYusufsstatement,

andaskhim,WhathappenedtothewomenwhocuttheirhandsSurely,myLord(Allah)isWellAwareoftheirplot.Ifitwasme,Iwouldhaveacceptedtheofferratherthanawaitmyexonerationfirst.(Ahmad2:346)

Allahsaidthatthekingasked,Hesaid,WhatwasyouraffairwhenyoudidseektoseduceYusuf?Thekinggatheredthosewomenwhocuttheirhands,whilebeinghostedatthehouseofthewifeoftheAziz.Heaskedthemall,eventhoughhewasdirectinghisspeechatthewifeofhisminister,theAzizinparticular.Heaskedthewomenwhocuttheirhands,Whatwasyouraffair?,whatwasyourstorywithregardsto,whenyoudidseektoseduceYusufonthedayofthebanquetThewomensaid:Allahforbid!Noevilknowweagainsthim!Thewomenansweredtheking,AllahforbidthatYusufbeguiltyofthis,forbyAllah,weneverknewhimtodoevil.Thisiswhen,ThewifeoftheAzizsaid:NowthetruthhasHashasaorthetruthismanifesttoall,accordingtoIbnAbbas,Mujahidandothers.(AtTabari16:138)Hashasaalsomeans,becameclearandplain,itwasIwhosoughttoseducehim,andheissurelyofthetruthful.whenhesaid,Itwasshethatsoughttoseduceme.inorderthathemayknowthatIbetrayedhimnotin(his)absence.

Shesaid,IadmitthisagainstmyselfsothatmyhusbandknowsthatIdidnotbetrayhiminhisabsenceandthatadulterydidnotoccur.Itriedtoseducethisyoungmanandherefused,andIamadmittingthissothatheknowsIaminnocent,And,verily,Allahguidesnottheplotofthebetrayers.AndIfreenotmyself(fromtheblame).Shesaid,Idonotexoneratemyselffromblame,becausethesoulwishesandlusts,andthisiswhatmademeseducehim,for,Verily,the(human)selfisinclinedtoevil,exceptwhenmyLordbestowsHismercy(uponwhomHewills).whomAllahtheExaltedwillstograntthemimmunity,Verily,myLordisOftForgiving,MostMerciful.Thisisthemostviableandsuitableunderstandingforthecontinuityofthestory



andthemeaningsofArabicspeech.AlMawardimentionedthisinhisTafsir,insupportofit,itwasalsopreferredbyImamAbuAlAbbasIbnTaymiyyahwhowroteaboutitindetailinaseparatework.

ItwassaidYusufpeacebeuponhimistheonewhosaid,inorderthathe(theAziz)mayknowthatIbetrayedhimnotwithhiswife,in(his)absence).untiltheendofAyah(53)Hesaid,Isentbacktheemissary,sothatthekingwouldinvestigatemyinnocenceandtheAzizbecertainthat,Ibetrayedhimnot,withhiswife,in(his)absence.And,verily,Allahguidesnottheplotofthebetrayers.ThisistheonlyexplanationpresentedbyIbnJarirAtTabariandIbnAbiHatim,butthefirstviewisstrongerandmoreobviousbecauseitisacontinuationofwhatthewifeofthe`Azizsaidinthepresenceoftheking.Yusufwasnotpresentatallduringthistime,forhewasreleasedlateronandbroughttothekingbyhisorder.

{54.Andthekingsaid:BringhimtomethatImayattachhimtomyperson.Then,whenhespoketohim,hesaid:Verily,thisday,youarewithushighinrankandfullytrusted.

55.Yusufsaid:SetmeoverthestorehousesofthelandIwillindeedguardthemwithfullknowledge.}

YusufsRankwiththeKingofEgypt

AllahstatesthatwhenhebecameawareofYusufsinnocenceandhisinnocenseofwhathewasaccusedof,thekingsaid,BringhimtomethatImayattachhimtomyperson.,thatImaymakehimamongmycloseaidsandassociates,Then,whenhespoketohim,whenthekingspoketoYusufandfurtherrecognizedhisvirtues,greatability,brilliance,goodconductandperfectmannerism,hesaidtohim,Verily,thisday,youarewithushighinrankandfullytrusted.ThekingsaidtoYusuf,`Youhaveassumedanexaltedstatuswithusandareindeedfullytrusted.Yusuf,peacebeuponhimsaid,SetmeoverthestorehousesofthelandIwillindeedguardthemwithfullknowledge.



Yusufpraisedhimself,forthisisallowedwhenonesabilitiesareunknownandthereisaneedtodoso.Hesaidthatheis,Hafiz,anhonestguard,Alim,havingknowledgeandwisdomaboutthejobheistobeentrustedwith.ProphetYusufaskedthekingtoappointhimasministeroffinancefortheland,responsiblefortheharveststorehouses,inwhichtheywouldcollectproducefortheyearsofdroughtwhichhetoldthemwillcome.Hewantedtobetheguard,sothathecoulddispensetheharvestinthewisest,bestandmostbeneficialway.ThekingacceptedYusufsoffer,forhewaseagertodrawYusufclosetohimandtohonorhim.SoAllahsaid,

{56.ThusdidWegivefullauthoritytoYusufintheland,totakepossessiontherein,whenorwherehelikes.WebestowofOurmercyonwhomWewill,andWemakenottobelostthe

rewardofthegooddoers.

57.Andverily,therewardoftheHereafterisbetterforthosewhobelievedandhadTaqwa.}

YusufsReigninEgypt

Allahsaidnext,ThusdidWegivefullauthoritytoYusufintheland,inEgypt,totakepossessiontherein,whenorwherehelikes.

AsSuddiandAbdurRahmanbinZaydbinAslamsaidthatthispartoftheAyahmeans,Todowhateverhewantstherein.IbnJariratTabarisaidthatitmeans,Heusedtomoveaboutfreelyinthelandafterbeingimprisoned,sufferingfromhardshipandthedisgraceofslavery.Allahsaidnext,WebestowofOurmercyonwhomWewill,andWemakenottobelosttherewardofthegooddoers.

Allahsayshere,WedidnotletthepatienceofYusuf,fromtheharmhisbrothersexertedonhimandbeingimprisonedbecauseofthewifeoftheAziz,tobelost.Instead,AllahtheExaltedandMostHonoredrewardedhimwithHisaidandvictory,AndWemakenottobelosttherewardofthegooddoers.Andverily,the



rewardoftheHereafterisbetterforthosewhobelievedandhadTaqwa.

AllahstatesthatwhatHehaspreparedforHisProphetYusuf,peacebeuponhim,intheHereafterismuchgreater,substantialandhonoredthantheauthorityHegavehiminthislife.AllahsaidaboutHisProphetSulayman(Solomon),peacebeuponhim,ThisisOurgift,sospendorwithhold,noaccountwillbeaskedofyou.Andverily,forhimisanearaccesstoUs,andagood(final)return(Paradise).(38:3940)

Yusuf,peacebeuponhim,wasappointedministeroffinancebyArRayyanbinAlWalid,kingofEgyptatthetime,insteadofthe`Azizwhoboughthimandthehusbandofshewhotriedtoseducehim.ThekingofEgyptembracedIslamatthehandsofYusuf,peacebeuponhim,accordingtoMujahid.

{58.AndYusufsbrethrencameandtheyentereduntohim,andherecognizedthem,buttheyrecognizedhimnot.

59.Andwhenhefurnishedthemwiththeirprovisions,hesaid:Bringmeabrotherofyoursfromyourfather.SeeyounotthatIgivefullmeasure,andthatIamthebestofthehosts

60.Butifyoubringhimnottome,thereshallbenomeasure(ofcorn)foryouwithme,norshallyoucomenearme.

61.Theysaid:Weshalltrytogetpermission(forhim)fromhisfather,andverily,weshalldoit.

62.And[Yusuf]toldhisservantstoputtheirmoneyintotheirbags,sothattheymightknowitwhentheygobacktotheirpeopleinorderthattheymightcomeagain.}



YusufsBrotherstraveltoEgypt

AsSuddi,MuhammadbinIshaqandseveralotherssaidthatthereasonwhyYusufsbrotherswenttoEgypt,isthatafterYusufbecameministerofEgyptandthesevenyearsofabundancepassed,thencamethesevenyearsofdroughtthatstruckallareasofEgypt.ThedroughtalsoreachedtheareaofKanaan(Canaan),whereProphetYa`qub,peacebeuponhim,andhischildrenresided.ProphetYusufefficientlyguardedthepeoplesharvestandcollectedit,andwhathecollectedbecameagreatfortuneforthepeople.ThisalsopermittedYusuftogivegiftstothepeoplewhosoughthisaidfromvariousareaswhocametobuyfoodandprovisionsfortheirfamilies.Yusufwouldnotgiveafamilymanmorethanwhateveracamelcouldcarry,asannualprovisionsforthem.Yusufhimselfdidnotfillhisstomachfromthisfood,nordidthekingandhisaidseatexceptonemealaday.Bydoingso,thepeoplecouldsustainthemselveswithwhattheyhadfortheremainderofthesevenyears.Indeed,YusufwasamercyfromAllahsenttothepeopleofEgypt.

YusufsbrotherswereamongthosewhocametoEgypttobuyfoodsupplies,bytheorderoftheirfather.TheyknewthattheAzizofEgyptwassellingfoodtopeoplewhoneeditforalowprice,sotheytooksomemerchandisefromtheirlandwiththemtoexchangeitforfood.Theywereten,becauseYaqubpeacebeuponhimkepthissonandYusufsbrotherBinyaminwithhim.BinyaminwasthedearestofhissonstohimafterYusuf.

WhenProphetYusufsbrothersenteredonhiminhiscourtandthecenterofhisauthority,heknewthemtheminutehesawthem.However,theydidnotrecognizehimbecausetheygotridofhimwhenhewasstillyoung,andsoldhimtoacaravanoftravelerswhileunawareoftheirdestination.TheycouldnothaveimaginedthatYusufwouldendupbeingaminister,andthisiswhytheydidnotrecognizehim,whilehedidrecognizethem.AsSuddisaidthatYusufstartedtalkingtohisbrothersandaskedthem,WhatbroughtyoutomylandTheysaid,O,Aziz,wecametobuyprovisions.Heaskedthem,Youmightbespies.Theysaid,Allahforbids.Heaskedthem,WhereareyoufromTheysaid,FromtheareaofKanaan,andourfatherisAllahsProphetYaqub.Heaskedthem,DoeshehaveotherchildrenbesidesyouTheysaid,Yes,weweretwelvebrothers.Ouryoungest



diedinthedesert,andheusedtobethedearesttohisfather.Hisfullbrotherisaliveandhisfatherkepthim,sothathisclosenesscompensateshimforlosingouryoungestbrother[whodied].Yusuforderedthathisbrothersbehonoredandallowedtoremain,Andwhenhefurnishedthemwiththeirprovisionsaccordingtotheirneedsandgavethemwhattheywantedtobuy,hesaidtothem,Bringmeyourbrotherfromyourfatherssidewhomyoumentioned,sothatIknowthatyouhavetoldmethetruth.Hecontinued,SeeyounotthatIgivefullmeasure,andthatIamthebestofthehostsencouragingthemtoreturntohim.Hethenthreatenedthem,Butifyoubringhimnottome,thereshallbenomeasure(ofcorn)foryouwithme.

HethreatenedthemthatifthenexttimetheycomewithoutBinyaminwiththem,theywillnotbeallowedtobuythefoodthattheyneed,norshallyoucomenearme.Theysaid:Weshalltrytogetpermission(forhim)fromhisfather,andverily,weshalldoit.Theysaid,`Wewilltryourbesttobringhimwithus,sothatwesparenoefforttoprovetoyouthatwearetruthfulinwhatwetoldyouaboutourselves.Allahsaid,And[Yusuf]toldhisservants,orhisslaves,toputtheirmoney,orthemerchandisetheybroughtwiththemtoexchangeforfood,intotheirbags,whiletheywereunaware,inorderthattheymightcomeagain.ItwassaidthatYusufdidthisbecausehefearedthathisbrothersmightnothaveanymoremerchandisetheycouldbringwiththemtoexchangeforfood.

{63.So,whentheyreturnedtotheirfather,theysaid:Oourfather!Nomoremeasureofgrainshallweget(unlesswetakeourbrother).Sosendourbrotherwithus,andweshallgetour

measureandtruly,wewillguardhim.

64.Hesaid:CanIentrusthimtoyouexceptasIentrustedhisbrother[Yusuf]toyouaforetimeButAllahistheBesttoguard,andHeistheMostMercifulofthosewhoshowmercy.}

YusufsBrothersaskYaqubsPermissiontosendTheirBrotherBinyaminwithThemtoEgypt



Allahsaysthatwhentheywentbacktotheirfather,theysaid:Oourfather!Nomoremeasureofgrainshallwegetafterthistime,unlessyousendourbrotherBinyaminwithus.Sosendhimwithus,andweshallgetourmeasureandweshallcertainlyguardhim.SomescholarsreadthisAyahinawaythatmeans,andheshallgethisration.Theysaid,andtruly,wewillguardhim.,donotfearforhissafety,forhewillbereturnedbacktoyou.ThisiswhattheysaidtoYa`qubabouttheirbrotherYusuf,Sendhimwithustomorrowtoenjoyhimselfandplay,andverily,wewilltakecareofhim.(12:12)ThisiswhyProphetYa`qubsaidtothem,CanIentrusthimtoyouexceptasIentrustedhisbrother[Yusuf]toyouaforetime?Heaskedthem,`WillyoudotohimexceptwhatyoudidtohisbrotherYusufbefore,whenyoutookhimawayfrommeandseparatedmefromhimButAllahistheBesttoguard,andHeistheMostMercifulofthosewhoshowmercy.Ya`qubsaid,`Allahhasthemostmercywithmeamongallthosewhoshowmercy,Heiscompassionatewithmeformyoldage,feeblenessandeagernessformyson.IinvokeAllahtoreturnhimtome,andtoallowhimandItobetogetherforsurely,HeistheMostMercifulofthosewhoshowmercy.

{65.Andwhentheyopenedtheirbags,theyfoundtheirmoneyhadbeenreturnedtothem.Theysaid:Oourfather!What(more)canwedesireThis,ourmoneyhasbeenreturnedtoussoweshallget(more)foodforourfamily,andweshallguardourbrotherandaddonemoremeasure

ofacamelsload.Thisquantityiseasy(forthekingtogive).

66.HeYa`qubsaid:IwillnotsendhimwithyouuntilyouswearasolemnoathtomeinAllahsName,thatyouwillbringhimbacktomeunlessyouareyourselvessurrounded(byenemies),Andwhentheyhadsworntheirsolemnoath,hesaid:AllahistheWitnesstowhatwehave

said.}

Allahsays,whenYusufsbrothersopenedtheirbags,theyfoundtheirmerchandiseinsidethem,forYusufhadorderedhisservantstoreturnittotheirbags.Whentheyfoundtheirmerchandiseintheirbags,Theysaid:Oourfather!What(more)canwedesire,whatmorecanweaskfor,This,ourmoneyhasbeenreturnedtousQatadahcommented(thattheysaid),Whatmorecanweaskfor,ourmerchandisewasreturnedtousandtheAzizhasgivenusthesufficientloadwewanted?(AtTabari16:162)Theysaidnext,soweshallget(more)foodforourfamily,ifyousendourbrotherwithusthenexttimewegotobuyfoodforourfamily,andweshallguardourbrotherandaddonemoremeasureofacamelsload.sinceYusuf,peacebeuponhim,gaveeachmanacamelsloadofcorn.Thisquantityiseasy(forthekingtogive).Theysaidthesewordstomaketheircasemoreappealing,sayingthattakingtheirbrotherwiththemisworththisgain,He[Ya`qub(Jacob)]said:IwillnotsendhimwithyouuntilyouswearasolemnoathtomeinAllahsName,untilyouswearbyAllahwiththestrongestoath,thatyouwillbringhimbacktomeunlessyouareyourselvessurrounded(byenemies),unlessyouwerealloverwhelmedandwereunabletorescuehim,Andwhentheyhadsworntheirsolemnoath,heaffirmeditfurther,saying,AllahistheWitnesstowhatwehavesaid.IbnIshaqcommented,Ya`qubdidthatbecausehehadnochoicebuttosendthemtobringnecessaryfoodsuppliesfortheirsurvival.SohesentBinyaminwiththem.(AtTabari16:164)

{67.Andhesaid:Omysons!Donotenterbyonegate,butenterbydifferentgates,andIcannotavailyouagainstAllahatall.Verily,thedecisionrestsonlywithAllah.InHim,Iputmytrust

andletallthosethattrust,puttheirtrustinHim.

68.Andwhentheyenteredaccordingtotheirfathersadvice,itdidnotavailthemintheleastagainst(thewillof)AllahitwasbutaneedofYaqubsinnerselfwhichhedischarged.And

verily,hewasendowedwithknowledgebecauseWehadtaughthim,butmostmenknownot.}

YaqubordersHisChildrentoenterEgyptfromDifferentGates



AllahsaysthatYaqub,peacebeuponhim,orderedhischildren,whenhesentBinyaminwiththemtoEgypt,toenterfromdifferentgatesratherthanallofthementeringfromonegate.IbnAbbas,MuhammadbinKab,Mujahid,AdDahhakQatadah,AsSuddiandseveralotherssaidthathefearedtheevileyeforthem,becausetheywerehandsomeandlookedbeautifulandgraceful.Hefearedthatpeoplemightdirecttheevileyeatthem,becausetheevileyetrulyharms,byAllahsdecree,andbringsdownthemightywarriorriderfromhishorse.Henextsaid,andIcannotavailyouagainstAllahatall.thisprecautionwillnotresistAllahsdecisionandappointeddecree.Verily,whateverAllahwills,cannotberesistedorstopped,Verily,thedecisionrestsonlywithAllah.InHim,Iputmytrustandletallthosethattrust,puttheirtrustinHim.Andwhentheyenteredaccordingtotheirfathersadvice,itdidnotavailthemintheleastagainst(thewillof)AllahitwasbutaneedofYaqubsinnerselfwhichhedischarged,asaprecautionagainsttheevileye,Andverily,hewasendowedwithknowledgebecauseWehadtaughthimhehadknowledgethatheimplemented,accordingtoQatadahandAthThawri.(AtTabari16:168)IbnJarirsaidthatthispartoftheAyahmeans,hehasknowledgethatWetaughthim,butmostmenknownot.(ibid)

{69.AndwhentheywentinbeforeYusuf,hetookhisbrother(Binyamin)tohimselfandsaid:Verily,Iamyourbrother,sogrievenotforwhattheyusedtodo.}

YusufcomfortsBinyamin

AllahstatesthatwhenYusufsbrotherswentinbeforehimalongwithhisfullbrotherBinyamin,heinvitedthemtoaplaceofhonorasprivilegedguests.Hegrantedthemgiftsandgeneroushospitalityandkindness.Hemethisbrotherinconfidenceandtoldhimthestoryofwhathappenedtohimandthathewasinfacthisbrother.Hesaidtohim,(grievenot)norfeelsadforwhattheydidtome.HeorderedBinyamintohidethenewsfromthemandtorefrainfromtellingthemthatthe`AzizishisbrotherYusuf.HeplottedwithhimtokeephiminEgyptenjoyinghonorandgreathospitality.



{70.Sowhenhefurnishedthemforthwiththeirprovisions,heputthebowlinhisbrothersbag.Thenacriercried:Oyou(in)thecaravan!Surely,youarethieves!

71.They,turningtowardsthem,said:Whatisitthatyouhavelost

72.Theysaid:Wehavelostthebowlofthekingandforhimwhoproducesitis(therewardof)acamelloadandIwillbeboundbyit.}

YusufhadHisGoldenBowlplacedinBinyaminsBagaPlottokeepHiminEgypt

AfterYusufsuppliedthemwiththeirprovisions,heorderedsomeofhisservantstoplacehissilverbowl(inBinyaminsbag),accordingtothemajorityofscholars.Somescholarssaidthatthekingsbowlwasmadefromgold.IbnZaydaddedthatthekingusedittodrinkfrom,(AtTabari16:172)andlater,measuredfoodgrainswithitsincefoodbecamescarceinthattime,accordingtoIbnAbbas,Mujahid,Qatadah,AdDahhakandAbdurRahmanbinZayd.(AtTabari16:173)ShubahsaidthatAbuBishrnarratedthatSaidbinJubayrsaidthatIbnAbbassaidthatthekingsbowlwasmadefromsilverandheusedittodrinkwith.(AtTabari16:176)YusufhadthebowlplacedinBinyaminsbagwhiletheywereunaware,andthenhadsomeoneherald,Oyou(in)thecaravan!Surely,youarethieves!Theylookedatthemanwhowasheraldingthisstatementandaskedhim,WhatisitthatyouhavelostTheysaid:Wehavelostthebowloftheking,whichheusedtomeasurefoodgrains,andforhimwhoproducesitisacamelload,asareward,andIwillbeboundbyit.,asassuranceofdeliveryofthereward

{73.Theysaid:ByAllah!Indeedyouknowthatwecamenottomakemischiefintheland,andwearenothieves!

74.Theysaid:Whatthenshallbethepenaltyofhim,ifyouare(provedtobe)liars.



75.They[Yusufsbrothers]said:Hispenaltyshouldbethathe,inwhosebagitisfound,shouldbeheldforthepunishment(ofthecrime).Thuswepunishthewrongdoers!

76.SoheYusufbegan(thesearch)intheirbagsbeforethebagofhisbrother.Thenhebroughtitoutofhisbrothersbag.ThusdidWeplanforYusuf.}

Hecouldnottakehisbrotherbythelawoftheking(asaslave),exceptthatAllahwilledit.WeraisetodegreeswhomWewill,butoverallthoseendowedwithknowledgeistheAllKnowing(Allah)AfterYusufsservantsaccusedhisbrothersoftheft,theysaid,ByAllah!Indeedyouknowthatwecamenottomakemischiefintheland,andwearenothieves!`Eversinceyouknewus,you,duetoourgoodconduct,becamecertainthat,wecamenottomakemischiefintheland,andwearenothieves!Theysaid,`Theftisnotinourcharacter,asyoucametoknow.Yusufsmensaid,Whatthenshallbethepenaltyofhim,inreferencetothethief,ifitcameoutthatheisoneofyou,ifyouare(provedtobe)liarsTheyaskedthem,WhatshouldbethethiefspunishmentifheisoneofyouTheysaid:Hispenaltyshouldbethathe,inwhosebagitisfound,shouldbeheldforthepunishment.Thuswepunishthewrongdoers!

ThiswasthelawofProphetIbrahim,peacebeuponhim,thatthethiefbegivenasaslavetothevictimoftheft.ThisiswhatYusufwanted,andthisiswhyhestartedwiththeirbagsfirstbeforehisbrothersbag,toperfecttheplot,Thenhebroughtitoutofhisbrothersbag.Therefore,YusuftookBinyaminasaslaveaccordingtotheirjudgementandthelawwhichtheybelievedin.SoAllahsaidThusdidWeplanforYusuf.andthisisagoodplotthatAllahlikesandprefers,becauseitseeksacertainbenefitusingwisdomandthebenefitofall.Allahsaidnext,Hecouldnottakehisbrotherbythelawofthekingasacaptive,forthiswasnotthelawofkingofEgypt,accordingtoAdDahhakandseveralotherscholars.(AtTabari16:188)AllahonlyallowedYusuftotakehisbrotherasacaptiveafterhisbrothersagreedtothisjudgementbeforehand,andheknewthatthiswastheirlaw.ThisiswhyAllahpraisedhimwhenHesaid,WeraisetodegreeswhomWewilljustasHesaidinanotherAyah,Allahwillexaltindegreethoseofyouwhobelieve.(58:11)Allahsaidnext,butover



allthoseendowedwithknowledgeistheAllKnowing.AlHasancommented,Thereisnoknowledgeableperson,butthereisanotherpersonwithmoreknowledgeuntilitendsatAllahtheExaltedandMostHonored.(AtTabari16:193)

Inaddition,AbdurRazzaqrecordedthatSaidbinJubayrsaid,WewerewithIbnAbbaswhenhenarratedanamazingHadith.Amanintheaudiencesaid,AllpraiseistoAllah!Thereisanallknowingaboveeverypersonendowedwithknowledge.IbnAbbasresponded,Worseitisthatwhichyousaid!AllahistheAllKnowingandHisknowledgeisabovetheknowledgeofeveryknowledgeableperson.(AbdurRazzaq2:237)SimaknarratedthatIkrimahsaidthatIbnAbbassaidaboutAllahsstatement,butoverallthoseendowedwithknowledgeistheAllKnowing(Allah).Thispersonhasmoreknowledgethanthatperson,andAllahisaboveallknowledgeablepersons.(AtTabari16:192)SimilarwasnarratedfromIkrimah.(ibid)Qatadahsaid,OvereverypersonendowedwithknowledgeisamoreknowledgeablepersonuntilallknowledgeendswithAllah.Verily,knowledgestartedfromAllah,andfromHimthescholarslearn,andtoHimallknowledgereturns.AbdullahbinMasudreadtheAyahthisway,Andaboveeveryscholar,istheAllKnower(Allah).(AtTabari16:193)

YusufsBothersaccuseHimofTheft!

AfterYusufsbrotherssawthatthekingsbowlwastakenoutofBinyaminsbag,theysaid,Ifhesteals,therewasabrotherofhiswhodidstealbefore.TheytriedtoshowthemselvesasinnocentfrombeinglikeBinyamin,sayingthathedidjustlikeabrotherofhisdidbeforehand,meaningYusuf,peacebeuponhim!Allahsaid,ButthesethingsdidYusufkeepinhimself,meaningthestatementthathesaidafterwards,You



areinanevilsituation,andAllahistheBestKnowerofthatwhichyoudescribe!Yusufsaidthistohimselfanddidnotutteritaloud,thusintendingtohidewhathewantedtosaytohimselfevenbeforehesaidit.AlAwfireportedthatIbnAbbassaidaboutAllahsstatement,ButthesethingsdidYusufkeepinhimself,Hekeptinhimself[hisstatementnext],Youareinanevilsituation,andAllahistheBestKnowerofthatwhichyoudescribe!).




{25.Sotheyracedwithoneanothertothedoor,andshetorehisshirtfromtheback.Theybothfoundhermaster(i.e.herhusband)atthedoor.Shesaid:Whatistherecompense

(punishment)forhimwhointendedanevildesignagainstyourwife,exceptthathebeputinprisonorapainfultorment

26.He[Yusuf]said:Itwasshethatsoughttoseducemeandawitnessofherhouseholdborewitness(saying)Ifitbethathisshirtistornfromthefront,thenhertaleistrueandheisa

liar!

27.Butifitbethathisshirtistornfromtheback,thenshehastoldalieandheisspeakingthetruth!

28.Sowhenhe(herhusband)sawhis[Yusufs]shirttornattheback,he(herhusband)said:



Surely,itisaplotofyouwomen!Certainlymightyisyourplot!

29.OYusuf!Turnawayfromthis!(Owoman!)Askforgivenessforyoursin,verily,youwereofthesinful.}

AllahsaysthatYusufandthewifeoftheAzizracedtothedoor,Yusufrunningawayfromherandherrunningafterhimtobringhimbacktotheroom.Shecaughtupwithhimandheldontohisshirtfromtheback,tearingitsoterriblythatitfelloffYusufsback.Yusufcontinuedrunningfromher,withherinpursuit.However,theyfoundhermaster,herhusband,atthefrontdoor.Thisiswhensherespondedbydeceitandevilplots,tryingtoexonerateherselfandimplicatehim,saying,Whatistherecompense(punishment)forhimwhointendedanevildesignagainstyourwife,inreferencetoillegalsexualintercourse,exceptthathebeputinprisonorapainfultormenttormentedseverelywithpainfulbeating.Yusufdidnotstandidle,buthedeclaredthetruthandexoneratedhimselffromthebetrayalsheaccusedhimof,He[Yusuf]said,intruthandhonesty,Itwasshethatsoughttoseduceme,andmentionedthatshepursuedhimandpulledhimtowardsheruntilshetorehisshirt.Andawitnessofherhouseholdborewitness(saying):Ifitbethathisshirtistornfromthefront,notfromtheback,thenhertaleistruethathetriedtocommitanillegalsexualactwithher.Hadhecalledhertohavesexwithhimandsherefused,shewouldhavepushedhimawayfromherandtorehisshirtfromthefront,Butifitbethathisshirtistornfromtheback,thenshehastoldalieandheisspeakingthetruth!

HadYusufrunawayfromher,andthisiswhattrulyhappened,andshesetinhispursuit,shewouldhaveheldtohisshirtfromthebacktobringhimbacktoher,thustearinghisshirtfromtheback.

Thereisadifferenceofopinionovertheageandgenderofthewitnessmentionedhere.AbdurRazzaqrecordedthatIbnAbbassaidthat,andawitnessofherhouseholdborewitnesswasabeardedman,meaninganadultmale.AthThawrireportedthatJabirsaidthatIbnAbiMulaykahsaidthatIbnAbbassaid,He



wasfromthekingsentourage.Mujahid,Ikrimah,AlHasan,Qatadah,AsSuddi,MuhammadbinIshaqandothersalsosaidthatthewitnesswasanadultmale.

AlAwfireportedthatIbnAbbassaidaboutAllahsstatement,andawitnessofherhouseholdborewitnessHewasababeinthecradle.(AtTabari16:56)SimilarwasreportedfromAbuHurayrah,HilalbinYasaf,AlHasan,SaidbinJubayrandAdDahhakbinMuzahim,thatthewitnesswasayoungboywholivedintheAzizshouse.(AtTabari16:5455)IbnJarirAtTabaripreferredthisview.

Allahsstatement,Sowhenhesawhis[Yusufs]shirttornatthebackindicatesthatwhenherhusbandbecamecertainthatYusufwastellingthetruthandthathiswifewaslyingwhensheheraldedtheaccusationofbetrayalatYusuf,hesaid:Surely,itisaplotofyouwomen!Hesaid,Thisfalseaccusationandstainingtheyoungmansreputationisbutaplotofmanythatyou,women,have,Certainlymightyisyourplot!TheAzizorderedYusuf,peacebeuponhim,tobediscreteaboutwhathappened,OYusuf!Turnawayfromthis!,donotmentiontoanyonewhathashappened,Andaskforgivenessforyoursin,addressinghiswife.TheAzizwasaneasyman,orgaveexcusetohiswifebecauseshesawinYusufanappealshecouldnotresist.Hesaidtoher,Askforgivenessforyoursin,theevildesirethatyouwantedtosatisfywiththisyoungman,andtheninventingfalseaccusationsabouthim,verily,youwereofthesinful.

{30.Andwomeninthecitysaid:ThewifeoftheAzizisseekingtoseduceher(slave)youngman,indeedsheloveshimviolentlyverily,weseeherinplainerror.

31.Sowhensheheardoftheiraccusation,shesentforthemandpreparedabanquetforthemshegaveeachoneofthemaknife,andshesaid[toYusuf]Comeoutbeforethem.Then,whentheysawhim,theyexaltedhim(athisbeauty)and(intheirastonishment)cuttheirhands.They

said:HowperfectisAllah!Nomanisthis!Thisisnoneotherthananobleangel!



32.Shesaid:Thisishe(theyoungman)aboutwhomyoudidblameme,andIdidseektoseducehim,butherefused.Andnowifherefusestoobeymyorder,heshallcertainlybecastinto

prison,andwillbeoneofthosewhoaredisgraced.

33.Hesaid:OmyLord!Prisonisdearertomethanthattowhichtheyinviteme.UnlessYouturnawaytheirplotfromme,Iwillfeelinclinedtowardsthemandbeoneoftheignorant.

34.SohisLordansweredhisinvocationandturnedawayfromhimtheirplot.Verily,HeistheAllHearer,theAllKnower.}

TheNewsreachesWomenintheCity,WhoalsoplotagainstYusuf

AllahstatesthatthenewsofwhathappenedbetweenthewifeoftheAzizandYusufspreadinthecity,thatis,Egypt,andpeopletalkedaboutit,Andwomeninthecitysaid,suchaswomenofchiefsandprincessaid,whileadmonishingandcriticizingthewifeoftheAziz,ThewifeoftheAzizisseekingtoseduceher(slave)youngman,,sheisluringherservanttohavesexwithher,indeedsheloveshimviolently,herloveforhimfilledherheartandengulfedit,verily,weseeherinplainerror.,bylovinghimandtryingtoseducehim.Sowhensheheardoftheiraccusationespeciallytheirstatement,indeedsheloveshimviolently.MuhammadbinIshaqcommented,TheyheardofYusufsbeautyandwantedtoseehim,sotheysaidthesewordsinordertogetalookathim.Thisiswhen,shesentforthem,invitedthemtoherhouse,andpreparedabanquetforthem.IbnAbbas,SaidbinJubayr,Mujahid,AlHasan,AsSuddiandseveralotherscommentedthatshepreparedasittingroomwhichhadcouches,pillows[toreclineon]andfoodthatrequiresknivestocut,suchascitron.(AtTabari16:7172)ThisiswhyAllahsaidnext,andshegaveeachoneofthemaknife,asapartofherplanofrevengefortheirplottoseeYusuf,andshesaid[toYusuf]Comeoutbeforethem,forshehadaskedhimtostaysomewhereelseinthehouse,Then,whenhewentoutand,theysawhim,theyexaltedhimtheythoughthighlyofhimandwereastonishedatwhattheysaw.



Theystartedcuttingtheirhandsinamazementathisbeauty,whilethinkingthattheywerecuttingthecitronwiththeirknives.Therefore,theyinjuredtheirhandswiththeknivestheywereholding,accordingtoseveralreportsofTafsir.(AtTabari16:7678)

Otherssaidthataftertheyateandfeltcomfortable,andafterhavingplacedcitroninfrontofthem,givingeachoneofthemaknife,thewifeoftheAzizaskedthem,WouldyouliketoseeYusuf?Theysaid,Yes.Soshesentforhimtocomeinfrontofthemandwhentheysawhim,theystartedcuttingtheirhands.Sheorderedhimtokeepcomingandgoing,sothattheysawhimfromallsides,andhewentbackinwhiletheywerestillcuttingtheirhands.Whentheyfeltthepain,theystartedscreamingandshesaidtothem,Youdidallthisfromonelookathim,sohowcanIbeblamed?,Theysaid:HowperfectisAllah!Nomanisthis!Thisisnoneotherthananobleangel!Theysaidtoher,Wedonotblameyouanymoreafterthesightthatwesaw.TheyneversawanyonelikeYusufbefore,forhe,peacebeuponhim,wasgivenhalfofallbeauty.AnauthenticHadithstatedthattheMessengerofAllah,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,passedbyProphetYusuf,duringtheNightofIsra[TheovernightjourneyfromMakkahtoJerusalem,thentoheaven,thenbacktoMakkah.]inthethirdheavenandcommented,Hewasgivenahalfofallbeauty.(Muslim1:146)Mujahidandotherssaid[theysaid]:WeseekrefugefromAllah,Nomanisthis!(AtTabari16:84)

Theysaidnext,Thisisnoneotherthananobleangel!Shesaid:Thisishe(theyoungman)aboutwhomyoudidblamemeShesaidthesewordstothemsothattheyexcuseherbehaviour,foramanwholooksthisbeautifulandperfect,isworthyofbeingloved,shethought.Shesaid,andIdidseektoseducehim,butherefusedtoobeyme.SomescholarssaidthatwhenthewomensawYusufsbeauty,shetoldthemabouthisinnerbeautythattheydidnotknowof,beingchasteandbeautifulfromtheinsideandoutside.Shethenthreatenedhim,Andnowifherefusestoobeymyorder,heshallcertainlybecastintoprison,andwillbeoneofthosewhoaredisgraced.ThisiswhenProphetYusufsoughtrefugewithAllahfromtheirevilandwickedplots,Hesaid:OmyLord!Prisonisdearertomethanthattowhichtheyinvite



meillegalsexualacts,UnlessYouturnawaytheirplotfromme,IwillfeelinclinedtowardsthemYusufinvokedAllah:IfYouabandonmeandIamreliantonmyself,thenIhavenopowerovermyself,norcanIbringharmorbenefittomyself,exceptwithYourpowerandwill.Verily,Youaresoughtforeachandeverything,andourtotalrelianceisonYouAloneforeachandeverything.Please,donotabandonmeandleavemetorelyonmyself,forthen,Iwillfeelinclinedtowardsthemandbeoneoftheignorant.SohisLordansweredhisinvocationYusuf,peacebeuponhim,wasimmunefromerrorbyAllahswill,andHesavedhimfromacceptingtheadvancesofthewifeoftheAziz.Hepreferredprison,ratherthanacceptherillicitcall.Thisindicatesthebestandmostperfectgradeinthiscase,forYusufwasyouthful,beautifulandfullofmanhood.Hismasterswifewascallinghimtoherself,andshewasthewifeoftheAzizofEgypt.Shewasalsoverybeautifulandwealthy,aswellashavingagreatsocialrank.Herefusedallthisandpreferredprison,forhefearedAllahandhopedtoearnHisreward.

ItisrecordedintheTwoSahihsthattheMessengerofAllah,peaceandblessingofAllahbeuponhim,said,

Allahwillgiveshadetoseven,ontheDaywhentherewillbenoshadebutHis:Ajustruler,ayouthwhohasbeenbroughtupintheworshipofAllah,amanwhoseheartisattachedtotheMasjid,fromthetimehegoesoutoftheMasjiduntilhegetsbacktoit,twopersonswholoveeachotheronlyforAllahssakeandtheymeetandpartinAllahscauseonly,amanwhogivescharitablegiftssosecretlythathislefthanddoesnotknowwhathisrighthandhasgiven,amanwhorefusesthecallofacharmingwomanofnoblebirthforillicitintercoursewithherandsays:IamafraidofAllah,andapersonwhoremembersAllahinseclusionandhiseyesarethenfloodedwithtears.(FathAlBari2:168,Muslim2:715)

{35.Thenitoccurredtothem,aftertheyhadseentheproofs(ofhisinnocence),toimprisonhimforatime.}

YusufisimprisonedwithoutJustification



Allahsays,ThenitoccurredtothemthatitwouldbeintheirinteresttoimprisonYusufforatime,evenaftertheywereconvincedofhisinnocenceandsawtheproofsofhistruth,honestyandchastity.Itappears,andAllahknowsbest,thattheyimprisonedhimafterthenewsofwhathappenedspread.TheywantedtopretendthatYusufwastheonewhotriedtoseducetheAzizswifeandthattheypunishedhimwithimprisonment.ThisiswhywhenthePharaohaskedYusuftoleavejailalongtimeafterwards,herefusedtoleaveuntilhisinnocencewasacertainedandtheallegationofhisbetrayalwasrefuted.Whenthiswassuccessfullyachieved,Yusuflefttheprisonwithhishonorintact,peacebeuponhim.

{36.Andthereenteredwithhimtwoyoungmenintheprison.Oneofthemsaid:Verily,Isawmyself(inadream)pressingwine.Theothersaid:Verily,Isawmyself(inadream)carryingbreadonmyheadandbirdswereeatingthereof.(Theysaid):Informusoftheinterpretation

ofthis.Verily,wethinkyouareoneofthedoersofgood.}

TwoJailMatesaskYusuftointerprettheirDreams

Qatadahsaid,Oneofthemwasthekingsdistillerandtheotherwashisbaker.(AtTabari16:95)EachofthesetwomenhadadreamandaskedYusuftointerpretitforthem.

{37.Hesaid:Nofoodwillcometoyouasyourprovision,butIwillinformitsinterpretationbeforeitcomes.ThisisofthatwhichmyLordhastaughtme.Verily,Ihaveabandonedthe

religionofapeoplethatbelievenotinAllahandaredisbelieversintheHereafter.

38.AndIhavefollowedthereligionofmyfathers,Ibrahim,IshaqandYaqubandnevercouldweattributeanypartnerswhatsoevertoAllah.ThisisfromthegraceofAllahtousandto

mankind,butmostmenthanknot.}



YusufcallsHisJailMatestoTawhidevenbeforeheinterpretsTheirDreams

Yusuf,peacebeuponhim,toldthetwomenthathehasknowledgeintheinterpretationofwhatevertheysawintheirdream,andthathewilltellthemabouttheinterpretationofthedreamsbeforetheybecomeareality.Thisiswhyhesaid,Nofoodwillcometoyouasyourprovision,butIwillinformyouofitsinterpretationMujahidcommented,Nofoodwillcometoyouasyourprovisionthisday,butIwillinformyouofitsinterpretationbeforeitcomes.AsSuddisaidsimilarly.(AtTabari16:100)Yusufsaidthat,thisknowledgeisfromAllahWhotaughtittome,becauseIshunnedthereligionofthosewhodisbelieveinHimandtheLastDay,whoneitherhopeforAllahsrewardnorfearHispunishmentontheDayofReturn,AndIhavefollowedthereligionofmyfathers,Ibrahim,IshaqandYaqub

Yusufsaid,Ihaveavoidedthewayofdisbeliefandpolytheism,andfollowedthewayofthesehonorableMessengers,mayAllahspeaceandblessingsbeonthem.This,indeed,isthewayofhewhoseeksthepathofguidanceandfollowsthewayoftheMessengers,allthewhileshunningthepathofdeviation.ItishewhoseheartAllahwillguide,teachinghimwhathedidnotknowbeforehand.ItishewhomAllahwillmakeanImamwhoisimitatedinthewayofrighteousness,andacallertothepathofgoodness.Yusufsaidnext,andnevercouldweattributeanypartnerswhatsoevertoAllah.ThisisfromthegraceofAllahtousandtomankindthisTawhidMonotheism,affirmingthatthereisnodeityworthyofworshipexceptAllahalonewithoutpartners,isfromthegraceofAllahtous,Hehasrevealedittousandordaineditonus,andtomankind,towhomHehassentusascallerstoTawhid,butmostmenthanknot.theydonotadmitAllahsfavorandblessingofsendingtheMessengerstothem,butrather,HavechangedtheblessingsofAllahintodisbelief,andcausedtheirpeopletodwellinthehouseofdestruction.(14:28)

40.YoudonotworshipbesidesHimbutonlynameswhichyouhavenamed(forged)youandyourfathersforwhichAllahhassentdownnoauthority.ThecommandisfornonebutAllah.HehascommandedthatyouworshipnonebutHimthatisthestraightreligion,butmostmen

knownot.}

ProphetYusufwentoncallinghistwoprisoncompanionstoworshipAllahalone,withoutpartners,andtorejectwhateverisbeingworshippedinsteadofHimliketheidols,whichwereworshippedbythepeopleofthetwomen,Yusufsaid,Aremanydifferentlords(gods)betterorAllah,theOne,theIrresistibletoWhosegraceandinfinitekingdomeverythingandeveryonehassubmittedinhumiliation.ProphetYusufexplainedtothemnextthatitisbecauseoftheirignorancethattheyworshipfalsedeitiesandgivethemnames,forthesenameswereforgedandarebeingtransferredfromonegenerationtothenextgeneration.Theyhavenoprooforauthoritythatsupportsthispractice,hencehisstatementtothem,forwhichAllahhassentdownnoauthorityorproofandevidence.Hethenaffirmedthatthejudgement,decision,willandkingdomareallforAllahalone,andHehascommandedallofHisservantstoworshipnonebutHim.Hesaid,thatisthestraightreligionthis,TawhidofAllahanddirectingallactsofworshipatHimaloneinsincerity,thatIamcallingyoutoistheright,straightreligionthatAllahhasordainedandforwhichHehasrevealedwhatHewillsofproofsandevidences,butmostmenknownot.,andthisiswhymostofthemareidolators,Andmostofmankindwillnotbelieveevenifyoueagerlydesireit.(12:103)WhenYusuffinishedcallingthem,hestartedinterpretingtheirdreamsforthem,

{41.Otwocompanionsoftheprison!Asforoneofyou,hewillpouroutwineforhismastertodrinkandasfortheother,hewillbecrucifiedandbirdswilleatfromhishead.Thusisthecase

judgedconcerningwhichyoubothdidinquire.}

TheInterpretationoftheDreams



Yusufsaid,Otwocompanionsoftheprison!Asforoneofyou,hewillpouroutwineforhismastertodrinktothemanwhosawinadreamthathewaspressingwine.Hedidnotdirectthisspeechathim,however,sothattolessenthegriefoftheotherperson.Thisiswhyhemadehisstatementindirect,andasfortheother,hewillbecrucifiedandbirdswilleatfromhishead.whichistheinterpretationoftheothermansdreaminwhichhesawhimselfcarryingbreadabovehishead.Yusuftoldthemthatthedecisionabouttheirmatterhasalreadybeentakenanditshallcometopass.Thisisbecausethedreamistiedtoabirdsleg,aslongasitisnottruthfullyinterpreted.Ifitisinterpreted,thenitbecomesareality.AthThawrisaidthatImarahbinAlQaqanarratedthatIbrahimsaidthatAbdullahbinMas`udsaid,Whentheysaidwhattheysaidtohim,andheexplainedtheirdreamstothem,theyreplied,Wedidnotseeanythingatall.Thisiswhenhesaid,Thusisthecasejudgedconcerningwhichyoubothdidinquire.(AtTabari16:108)

Theunderstandinginthisisthathewhoclaimsthathesawadreamandwasgivenitsinterpretation,thenhewillbetiedtoitsinterpretation,andAllahhasthebestknowledge.ThereisanhonorableHadiththatImamAhmadcollectedfromMuawiyahbinHaydahthattheProphet,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,said,

Thedreamistiedtoabirdsleg,aslongasitisnotinterpreted.Ifitisinterpreted,itbecomesareality.(Ahmad4:10)

{42.Andhesaidtotheonewhomheknewtobesaved:Mentionmetoyourking.ButShaytanmadehimforgettomentionittohismaster.So[Yusuf]stayedinprisonafew(more)years.}

YusufaskstheKingsDistillertomentionHimtoaKing

Yusufknewthatthedistillerwouldbesaved.Sodiscretely,sothattheothermanssuspicionthathewouldbecrucifiedwouldnotintensify,hesaid,MentionmetoyourKing.askinghimtomentionhisstorytotheking.ThatmanforgotYusufsrequestanddidnotmentionhisstorytotheking,aplotfromthedevil,sothat

46.(Hesaid):OYusuf,themanoftruth!Explaintoussevenfatcowswhomsevenleanonesweredevouring,andsevengreenearsofcorn,and(seven)othersdry,thatImayreturntothe

people,andthattheymayknow.

47.[Yusuf]said:Forsevenconsecutiveyears,youshallsowasusualandthatwhichyoureapyoushallleaveitintheears,(all)exceptalittleofitwhichyoumayeat.

48.Thenwillcomeafterthat,sevenhard(years),whichwilldevourwhatyouhavelaidbyinadvanceforthem,(all)exceptalittleofthatwhichyouhaveguarded(stored).



49.Thenthereafterwillcomeayearinwhichpeoplewillhaveabundantrainandinwhichtheywillpress(wineandoil).}

TheDreamoftheKingofEgypt

TheKingofEgypthadadreamthatAllahtheExaltedmadeareasonforYusufsreleasefromprison,withhishonorandreputationpreserved.Whenthekinghadthisdream,hewasastonishedandfearfulandsoughtitsinterpretation.Hegatheredthepriests,thechiefsofhisstateandtheprincesandtoldthemwhathehadseeninadream,askingthemtointerpretitforhim.Theydidnotknowitsinterpretationandasanexcuse,theysaid,Mixedupfalsedreams,whichyousaw,andwearenotskilledintheinterpretationofdreams.Theysaid,hadyourdreambeenavisionratherthanamixedupfalsedream,wewouldnothaveknownitsinterpretation.Themanwhowassavedfromthetwo,whowereYusufscompanionsinprison,remembered.ShaytanplottedtomakehimforgettherequestofYusuf,tomentionhisstorytotheking.Now,yearslater,herememberedafterforgetfulnessandsaidtothekingandhisentourage,Iwilltellyouitsinterpretationheinterpretationofthisdream,sosendmeforth.totheprison,toYusuf,themanoftruth.Sotheysenthim,andhesaidtoYusuf,OYusuf,themanoftruth!Explaintousandmentionedthekingsdreamtohim.

YusufsInterpretationoftheKingsDream

ThisiswhenYusuf,peacebeuponhim,toldtheinterpretationofthedream,withoutcriticizingthemanforforgettinghisrequestthathehadmadetohim.Neitherdidhemakeapreconditionthathebereleasedbeforeexplainingthemeaning.Rather,hesaid,Forsevenconsecutiveyears,youshallsowasusualyouwillreceivetheusualamountofrainandfertilityforsevenconsecutiveyears.Heinterpretedthecowstobeyears,becausecowstillthelandthatproducefruitsandvegetables,whichrepresentthegreenearsofcorninthedream.Henextrecommendedwhattheyshoulddoduringthesefertileyears,andthat(theharvest)whichyou



reapyoushallleaveitintheears,(all)exceptalittleofitwhichyoumayeat.Hesaid,Whateveryouharvestduringthosesevenfertileyears,leaveitintheearssoastopreserveitbetter.Thiswillhelptheharveststayhealthylonger,excepttheamountthatyouneedtoeat,whichshouldnotbesubstantial.Stayawayfromextravagance,sothatyouusewhatremainsoftheharvestduringthesevenyearsofdroughtthatwillfollowthesevenfertileyears.Thiswasrepresentedbythesevenleancowsthateatthesevenfatcows.

Duringthesevenyearsofdrought,theywilleatfromtheharvesttheycollectedduringthesevenfertileyears,asrepresentedbythedryearsofcorninthedream.Yusuftoldthemthatduringtheseyears,theremainingearswillnotproduceanythingandwhatevertheytrytoplant,willnotproduceanyharvest,sohesaid,whichwilldevourwhatyouhavelaidbyinadvanceforthem,(all)exceptalittleofthatwhichyouhaveguarded(stored).Hedeliveredthegoodnewstothemthataftertheconsecutiveyearsofdrought,therewillcomeafertileyear,duringwhichpeoplewillreceiverainandthelandwillproduceinabundance.Thepeoplewillthenpresswineandoilasusual.

QualitiesoftheQuran

InthebeginningofSuratAlBaqarahwetalkedabouttheseparateletters,Allahsaid,ThesearetheversesoftheBookinreferencetotheClearQuranthatisplainandapparent,andexplains,clarifiesandmakesknowntheunclearmatters.Allahsaidnext,Verily,WehavesentitdownasanArabicQuraninorderthatyoumayunderstand.TheArabiclanguageisthemosteloquent,plain,deepandexpressiveofthemeaningsthatmightariseinonesmind.Therefore,themosthonourableBook,wasrevealedinthemosthonourablelanguage,tothemosthonourableProphetandMessenger,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,deliveredbythemosthonourableangel,inthemosthonourablelandonearth,anditsrevelationstartedduringthemosthonourablemonthoftheyear,Ramadan.Therefore,theQuranisperfectineveryrespect.SoAllahsaid,WerelateuntoyouthebestofstoriesthroughOurrevelationsuntoyou,ofthisQuran.

ReasonsBehindRevealingAyah12:3

OnthereasonbehindrevealingAyah(12:3),IbnJarirAtTabarirecordedthatAbdullahbinAbbassaid,Theysaid,O,AllahsMessenger!Whynotnarratetousstories?[Aboutnationsthathavepassed,howtheyansweredtheirProphets,whathappenedtothemafterwards,etc.]Lateron,thisAyahwasrevealed,Werelateuntoyouthebestofstories(AtTabari15:552)



ThereisaHadiththatisrelevantuponmentioningthishonourableAyah,whichpraisestheQurananddemonstratesthatitissufficientfromneedingallbooksbesidesit.ImamAhmadrecordedanarrationfromJabirbinAbdullahthatUmarbinAlKhattabcametotheProphet,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,withabookthathetookfromsomeofthePeopleoftheBook.UmarbeganreadingittotheProphetwhobecameangry.Hesaid,

AreyouuncertainaboutitIbnAlKhattab?BytheOneinWhoseHandismysoul!Ihavecometoyouwithitwhiteandpure.Donotaskthemaboutanything,fortheymighttellyousomethingtrueandyourejectit,ortheymighttellyousomethingfalseandyoubelieveit.BytheOneinWhoseHandismysoul!IfMusawereliving,hewouldhavenochoicebuttofollowme.(Ahmad3:387)

ImamAhmadalsorecordedanarrationfromAbdullahbinThabitwhosaid,UmarcametoAllahsMessengerandsaidOMessengerofAllah!Ipassedbyabrotherofminefrom[thetribeof]Qurayzah,sohewrotesomecomprehensivestatementsfromtheTawrahforme,shouldIreadthemtoyou?ThefaceofAllahsMessengerchanged[withanger].SoIsaidtohim,DontyouseethefaceofAllahsMessenger?Umarsaid,WearepleasedwithAllahasourLord,Islamasourreligion,andMuhammadasourMessenger.SotheangeroftheProphetsubsided,andhesaid,

BytheOneinWhoseHandisMuhammadssoul,ifMusaappearedamongyouandyouweretofollowhim,abandoningme,thenyouwouldhavestrayed.Indeedyouaremyshareofthenations,andIamyourshareoftheProphets.(Ahmad4:266.SeeAlIrwano.1589)

YusufsDream



Allahsays,Mentiontoyourpeople,OMuhammad,amongthestoriesthatyounarratetothem,thestoryofYusuf.ProphetYusuf(Joseph)mentionedhisdreamtohisfather,ProphetYaqub(Jacob),sonofProphetIshaq(Isaac),sonofProphetIbrahim(Abraham),peacebeuponthemall.AbdullahbinAbbasstatedthatthedreamsofProphetsarerevelationsfromAllah.(AtTabari15:554)ScholarsofTafsirexplainedthatinYusufsdreamtheelevenstarsrepresenthisbrothers,whowereeleven,andthesunandthemoonrepresenthisfatherandmother.ThisexplanationwascollectedfromIbnAbbas,AdDahhak,Qatadah,SufyanAthThawriandAbdurRahmanbinZaydbinAslam.Yusufsvisionbecamearealityfortyyearslater,orassomesay,eightyyears,whenYusufraisedhisparentstothethronewhilehisbrotherswerebeforehim,andtheyfelldownbeforehimprostrate.Andhesaid:Omyfather!Thisistheinterpretationofmydreamaforetime!MyLordhasmadeitcometrue!(AtTabari15:557)

YaquiordersYusuftohideHisVisiontoavoidShaytansPlots

AllahnarratesthereplyYaqubgavehissonYusufwhenhenarratedtohimthevisionthathesaw,whichindicatedthathisbrotherswouldbeunderhisauthority.TheywouldbesubjugatedtoYusufsauthoritytosuchanextentthattheywouldprostratebeforehiminrespect,honorandappreciation.YaqubfearedthatifYusufnarratedhisvisiontoanyofhisbrothers,theywouldenvyhimandconspireevilplotsagainsthim.ThisiswhyYaqubsaidtoYusuf,Relatenotyourvisiontoyourbrothers,lesttheyshouldarrangeaplotagainstyou.ThisAyahmeans,Theymightarrangeaplotagainstyouthatcausesyourdemise.IntheSunnah,thereisaconfirmedHadiththatstates,

Ifanyofyousawavisionthathelikes,lethimnarrateit.Ifhesawadreamthathedislikes,lethimturnonhisotherside,blowtohisleftthrice,seekrefugewithAllahfromitsevilandnottellittoanyone.Verily,itwillnot



harmhiminthiscase.(Muslim4:1772)

InanotherHadiththatImamAhmadandcollectorsoftheSunancollected,MuawiyahbinHaydahAlQushayrisaidthattheMessengerofAllah,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,said,

Thedreamistiedtoabirdsleg,aslongasitisnotinterpreted.Ifitisinterpreted,itcomestrue.(Ahmad4:20,AbuDawud5:283,IbnMajah2:1288)

Therefore,oneshouldhidetheprospectsorthecomingofabountyuntilitcomesintoexistenceandbecomesknown.TheProphet,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,said,

Earnhelpforfulfillingneedsbybeingdiscrete,foreveryownerofablessingisenvied.(AtTabari20:94)

{6.ThuswillyourLordchooseyouandteachyoutheinterpretationofdreams(andotherthings)andperfectHisfavouronyouandontheoffspringofYaqub,asHeperfecteditonyour

fathers,IbrahimandIshaqaforetime!Verily,yourLordisAllKnowing,AllWise.}

InterpretationofYusufsVision

AllahsaysthatYaqubsaidtohissonYusuf,JustasAllahchoseyoutoseetheelevenstars,thesunandthemoonprostratebeforeyouinavision,ThuswillyourLordchooseyoudesignateandassignyoutobeaProphetfromHim,andteachyoutheinterpretationofAhadith.MujahidandseveralotherscholarssaidthatthispartoftheAyahisinreferencetotheinterpretingofdreams.(AtTabari15:560)Hesaidnext,andperfectHisfavouronyou,byHisMessageandrevelationtoyou.ThisiswhyYaqubsaidafterwards,asHeperfecteditaforetimeonyourfathers,Ibrahim,Allahsintimatefriend,andIshaq,Ibrahimsson,Verily,yourLordisAllKnowing,AllWise.AllahknowsbestwhomtochoseforHisMessages.



{7.Verily,inYusufandhisbrethrentherewereAyatforthosewhoask.

8.Whentheysaid:Truly,Yusufandhisbrotheraredearertoourfatherthanwe,whileweareUsbah(agroup).Really,ourfatherisinaplainerror.

9.KillYusuforcasthimouttosome(other)land,sothatthefavorofyourfathermaybegiventoyoualone,andafterthatyouwillberighteousfolk.

10.Onefromamongthemsaid:KillnotYusuf,butifyoumustdosomething,throwhimdowntothebottomofawellhewillbepickedupbysomecaravanoftravelers.}

ThereareLessonstoDrawfromtheStoryofYusuf

AllahsaysthatthereareAyat,lessonsandwisdomtolearnfromthestoryofYusufandhisbrothers,forthosewhoaskabouttheirstoryandseekitsknowledge.Surely,theirstoryisuniqueandisworthyofbeingnarrated.Whentheysaid:Truly,YusufandhisbrotheraredearertoourfatherthanweTheyswore,accordingtotheirfalsethoughts,thatYusufandhisbrotherBinyamin(Benjamin),Yusufsfullbrother,dearertoourfatherthanwe,whileweareUsbah.meaning,agroup.Therefore,theythought,howcanhelovethesetwomorethanthegroup,Really,ourfatherisinaplainerror.becausehepreferredthemandlovedthemmorethanus.KillYusuforcasthimouttosome(other)land,sothatthefavourofyourfathermaybegiventoyoualone,Theysaid,RemoveYusuf,whocompeteswithyouforyourfatherslove,frominfrontofyourfathersfacesothathisfavourisyoursalone.EitherkillYusuforbanishhimtoadistantlandsothatyouareridofhistroubleandyoualoneenjoytheloveofyourfather.andafterthatyouwillberighteousfolk.,thusintendingrepentancebeforecommittingthesin,Onefromamongthemsaid

QatadahandMuhammadbinIshaqsaidthathewastheoldestamongthemandhisnamewasRubil(Reuben).



(AtTabari15:564565)AsSuddisaidthathisnamewasYahudha(Judah).MujahidsaidthatitwasShamun(Simeon)whosaid,KillnotYusuf,donotletyourenmityandhatredtowardshimreachthislevel,ofmurder.

However,theirplottokillYusufwouldnothavesucceeded,becauseAllahtheExaltedwilledthatYusuffulfillamissionthatmustbefulfilledandcompletehewouldreceiveAllahsrevelationandbecomeHisProphet.AllahwilledYusuftobeapowerfulmaninEgyptandgovernit.Consequently,AllahdidnotallowthemtopersistintheirintentagainstYusuf,throughRubilswordsandhisadvicetothemthatiftheymustdosomething,theyshouldthrowhimdowntothebottomofawell,hewillbepickedupbysomecaravanoftravellerspassingby.Thisway,hesaid,youwillridyourselvesofthisbotherwithouthavingtokillhim,ifyoumustdosomethingmeaning,ifyoustillinsistongettingridofhim.MuhammadbinIshaqbinYasarsaid,Theyagreedtoaparticularlyviciouscrimethatinvolvedcuttingtherelationofthewomb,undutifultreatmentofparents,andharshnesstowardstheyoung,helplessandsinless.Itwasalsoharshtowardstheoldandweakwhohavetherightsofbeingrespected,honouredandappreciated,aswellas,beinghonouredwithAllahandhavingparentalrightsontheiroffspring.Theysoughttoseparatethebelovedfather,whohadreachedoldageandhisbonesbecameweak,yethadahighstatuswithAllah,fromhisbelovedyoungson,inspiteofhisweakness,tenderageandhisneedofhisfatherscompassionandkindness.MayAllahforgivethem,andindeed,HeistheMostMercifulamongthosewhohavemercy,fortheyintendedtocarryoutagraveerror.IbnAbiHatimcollectedthisstatement,fromtherouteofSalamahbinAlFadlfromMuhammadbinIshaq.

{11.Theysaid:Oourfather!WhydoyounottrustuswithYusufthoughweareindeedhiswellwishers

12.Sendhimwithustomorrowtoenjoyhimselfandplay,andverily,wewilltakecareofhim.}

YusufsBrothersaskforTheirFathersPermissiontotakeYusufwithThem



WhenYusufsbrothersagreedtotakehimandthrowhimdownthewell,takingtheadviceoftheirelderbrotherRubil,theywenttotheirfatherYaqub,peacebeuponhim.Theysaidtohim,WhyisitthatyoudonottrustuswithYusufthoughweareindeedhiswellwishers?Theystartedexecutingtheirplanbythisintroductorystatement,eventhoughtheyreallyintendeditsopposite,outofenvytowardsYusufforbeinglovedbyhisfather.Theysaid,Sendhimwithustomorrowsothatweallenjoyourselvesandplay.(AtTabari15:570)Qatadah,AdDahhakandAsSuddisaidsimilarly.(AtTabari15:571)Yusufsbrotherssaidnext,andverily,wewilltakecareofhim.,wewillprotecthimandensurehissafetyforyou.

{13.He(Yaqub)said:Truly,itsaddensmethatyoushouldtakehimaway.Ifearlestawolfshoulddevourhim,whileyouarecarelessofhim.

14.Theysaid:Ifawolfdevourshim,whileweareUsbah(agroup),thensurely,wearethelosers.}

YaqubsAnswertoTheirRequest

AllahnarratestousthatHisProphetYaqubsaidtohischildren,inresponsetotheirrequestthathesendYusufwiththemtothedeserttotendtheircattle,Truly,itsaddensmethatyoushouldtakehimaway.HesaidthatitwashardonhimthathebeseparatedfromYusufforthedurationoftheirtrip,untiltheycameback.ThisdemonstratesthedeeplovethatYaqubhadforhisson,becausehesawinYusufgreatgoodnessandexaltedqualitieswithregardstoconductandphysicalattractivenessassociatedwiththerankofprophethood.MayAllahspeaceandblessingsbeonhim.ProphetYaqubsstatementnext,Ifearlestawolfshoulddevourhim,whileyouarecarelessofhim.Hesaidtothem,Ifearthatyoumightbecarelesswithhimwhileyouaretendingthecattleandshooting,thenawolfmightcomeandeathimwhileyouareunaware.Theyheardthesewordsfromhismouthandusedthemintheirresponseforwhattheydidafterwards.Theyalsogaveaspontaneousreplyfortheirfathersstatement,saying,Ifawolfdevourshim,whileweareanUsbah,



thensurely,wearethelosers.Theysaid,Ifawolfshouldattackanddevourhimwhileweareallaroundhiminastronggroup,thenindeedwearethelosersandweak.

{15.So,whentheytookhimaway,theyallagreedtothrowhimdowntothebottomofthewell,andWerevealedtohim:Indeed,youshall(oneday)informthemofthistheiraffair,whenthey

know(you)not.}

YusufisthrownintoaWell

AllahsaysthatwhenYusufsbrotherstookhimfromhisfather,aftertheyrequestedhimtopermitthat,theyallagreedtothrowhimdowntothebottomofthewellThispartoftheAyahmagnifiestheircrime,inthatitmentionsthattheyallagreedtothrowhimtothebottomofthewell.Thiswastheirintent,yetwhentheytookhimfromhisfather,theypretendedotherwise,sothathisfathersendshimwithagoodheartandfeelingateaseandcomfortablewithhisdecision.ItwasreportedthatYaqub,peacebeuponhim,embracedYusuf,kissedhimandsupplicatedtoAllahforhimwhenhesenthimwithhisbrothers.AsSuddisaidthatthetimespentbetweenpretendingtobewellwishersandharmingYusufwasnolongerthantheirstrayingfarfromtheirfatherseyes.TheythenstartedabusingYusufverbally,bycursing,andharminghimbybeating.Whentheyreachedthewellthattheyagreedtothrowhimin,theytiedhimwithropeandloweredhimdown.WhenYusufwouldbegoneofthem,hewouldsmackandcursehim.Whenhetriedtoholdtothesidesofthewell,theystruckhishandandthencuttheropewhenhewasonlyhalfthedistancefromthebottomofthewell.Hefellintothewaterandwassubmerged.However,hewasabletoascendastonethatwasinthewellandstoodonit.(AtTabari15:574)Allahsaidnext,andWerevealedtohim:Indeed,youshall(oneday)informthemofthistheiraffair,whentheyknow(you)not.

InthisAyah,AllahmentionsHismercyandcompassionandHiscompensationandreliefthatHesendsintimesofdistress.AllahrevealedtoYusuf,duringthatdistressfultime,inordertocomforthisheartandstrengthenhis



resolve,Donotbesaddenedbywhatyouhavesuffered.Surely,youwillhaveawayoutofthisdistressandagoodend,forAllahwillaidyouagainstthem,elevateyourrankandraiseyourgrade.Lateron,youwillremindthemofwhattheydidtoyou,whentheyknownot.IbnAbbascommentedonthisAyah,Youwillremindthemofthisevilactionagainstyou,whiletheyareunawareofyouridentityandunabletorecogniseyou.(AtTabari15:577)

{16.Andtheycametotheirfatherintheearlypartofthenightweeping.

17.Theysaid:Oourfather!Wewentracingwithoneanother,andleftYusufbyourbelongingsandawolfdevouredhimbutyouwillneverbelieveusevenwhenwespeakthetruth.

18.Andtheybroughthisshirtstainedwithfalseblood.Hesaid:Nay,butyourownselveshavemadeupatale.So(forme)patienceismostfitting.AnditisAllah(Alone)Whosehelpcanbe

soughtagainstthat(lie)whichyoudescribe.}

YusufsBrotherstrytodeceiveTheirFather

AllahnarratestousthedeceitthatYusufsbrothersresortedto,aftertheythrewhimtothebottomofthewell.Theywentbacktotheirfather,duringthedarknessofthenight,cryingandshowingsorrowandgriefforlosingYusuf.TheystartedgivingexcusestotheirfatherforwhathappenedtoYusuf,falselyclaimingthat,Wewentracingwithoneanother,orhadashootingcompetition,andleftYusufbyourbelongings,guardingourclothesandluggage,andawolfdevouredhim,whichisexactlywhattheirfathertoldthemhefearedforYusufandwarnedagainst.Theysaidnext,butyouwillneverbelieveusevenwhenwespeakthetruth.

Theytriedtolessentheimpactofthegravenewstheyweredelivering.Theysaid,Weknowthatyouwillnot



believethisnews,evenifyouconsiderustruthful.Sowhataboutwhenyoususpectthatwearenottruthful,especiallysinceyoufearedthatthewolfmightdevourYusufandthatiswhathappenedTherefore,theysaid,Youhavereasonnottobelieveusbecauseofthestrangecoincidenceandtheamazingoccurrencethathappenedtous.Andtheybroughthisshirtstainedwithfalseblood.onit,tohelpproveplotthattheyallagreedon.Theyslaughteredasheep,accordingtoMujahid,AsSuddiandseveralotherscholars,andstainedYusufsshirtwithitsblood.TheyclaimedthatthiswastheshirtYusufwaswearingwhenthewolfdevouredhim,beingstainedwithhisblood.(AtTabari15:580)But,theyforgottoteartheshirt,andthisiswhyAllahsProphetYaqubdidnotbelievethem.Rather,hetoldthemwhathefeltaboutwhattheysaidtohim,thusrefusingtheirfalseclaim,Nay,butyourownselveshavemadeupatale.So(forme)patienceismostfitting.Yaqubsaid,Iwillfirmlyobservepatienceforthisplotonwhichyouagreed,untilAllahrelievesthedistresswithHisaidandcompassion,AnditisAllah(alone)Whosehelpcanbesoughtagainstthatwhichyoudescribe.,againsttheliesandunbelievableincidentthatyousaidhadoccurred.

{19.Andtherecameacaravanoftravelersandtheysenttheirwaterdrawer,andheletdownhisbucket(intothewell).Hesaid:Whatgoodnews!Hereisaboy.Sotheyhidhimas

merchandise(aslave).AndAllahwastheAllKnowerofwhattheydid.

20.AndtheysoldhimforaBakhsprice,forafewDirhams.Andtheywereofthosewhoregardedhiminsignificant.}

YusufisRescuedfromtheWellandsoldasaSlave

AllahnarrateswhathappenedtoYusuf,peacebeuponhim,afterhisbrothersthrewhimdownthewellandlefthiminit,alone,whereheremainedforthreedays,accordingtoAbuBakrbinAyyash.MuhammadbinIshaqsaid,AfterYusufsbrothersthrewhimdownthewell,theyremainedaroundthewellfortherestofthedaytoseewhathemightdoandwhatwouldhappentohim.Allahsentacaravanoftravelersthatcampednearthatwell,andthey



senttoitthemanresponsiblefordrawingwaterforthem.Whenheapproachedthewell,heloweredhisbucketdownintoit,Yusufheldontoitandthemanrescuedhimandfelthappy,Whatgoodnews!Hereisaboy.

AlAwfireportedthatIbnAbbascommented,Allahsstatement,Sotheyhidhimasmerchandise,isinreferencetoYusufsbrothers,whohidthenewsthathewastheirbrother.Yusufhidthisnewsforfearthathisbrothersmightkillhimandpreferredtobesoldinstead.Consequently,Yusufsbrotherstoldthewaterdrawerabouthimandthatmansaidtohiscompanions,Whatgoodnews!Hereisaboy.,aslavewhomwecansell.Therefore,Yusufsownbrotherssoldhim.(AtTabari16:6)

Allahsstatement,AndAllahwastheAllKnowerofwhattheydid.statesthatAllahknewwhatYusufsbrothers,andthosewhoboughthim,did.Hewasabletostopthemandpreventthemfromcommittingtheiractions,butoutofHisperfectwisdomHedecreedotherwise.Heletthemdowhattheydid,sothatHisdecisionprevailsandHisappointeddestinyrules,Surely,Hisisthecreationandcommandment.BlessedisAllah,theLordoftheallthatexists!(7:54)ThisremindsAllahsMessengerMuhammad,peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim,thatAllahhasperfectknowledgeinthepersecutionthathispeoplecommittedagainsthimandthatHeisabletostopthem.However,Hedecidedtogivethemrespite,thengiveMuhammadthevictoryandmakehimprevailoverthem,justasHegaveYusufvictoryandmadehimprevailoverhisbrothers.

Allahsaidnext,AndtheysoldhimforaBakhsprice,forafewDirhamsinreferencetoYusufsbrotherssellinghimforalittleprice,accordingtoMujahidandIkrimah.Bakhsmeansdecreased,(AtTabari16:12)justasAllahtheExaltedsaidinanotherAyah,shallhavenofear,eitherofaBakhs(adecreaseintherewardofhisgooddeeds)oraRahaq(anincreaseinthepunishmentforhissins).(72:13)meaningthatYusufsbrothersexchangedhimforamiserablylowprice.Yet,hewassoinsignificanttothemthathadthecaravanpeoplewantedhimforfree,theywouldhavegivenhimforfreetothem!IbnAbbas,MujahidandAdDahhaksaidthat,Andtheysoldhim,isinreferencetoYusufsbrothers.(AtTabari16:1417)TheysoldYusufforthelowestprice,asindicatedbyAllahsstatementnext,forafewDirhams,twentyDirhams,



accordingtoAbdullahbinMasud.(AtTabari16:12)SimilarwassaidbyIbnAbbas,NawfAlBikali,AsSuddi,QatadahandAtiyahAlAwfi,whoaddedthattheydividedtheDirhamsamongthemselves,eachgettingtwoDirhams.(AtTabari16:14)AdDahhakcommentedonAllahsstatement,Andtheywereofthosewhoregardedhiminsignificant.BecausetheyhadnoknowledgeofhisprophethoodandgloriousrankwithAllah,theExaltedandMostHonoured.

{21.Andhe(theman)fromEgyptwhoboughthim,saidtohiswife:Makehisstaycomfortable,maybehewillprofitusorweshalladopthimasason.ThusdidWeestablishYusufintheland,thatWemightteachhimtheinterpretationofevents.AndAllahhasfullpowerandcontrolover

Hisaffairs,butmostofmenknownot.

22.Andwhenhe[Yusuf]attainedhisfullmanhood,Wegavehimwisdomandknowledge(theprophethood),thusWerewardthedoersofgood.}

YusufinEgypt

AllahmentionsthefavorsthatHegrantedYusuf,peacebeonhim,bywhichHemadethemanfromEgyptwhoboughthim,takecareofhimandprovidehimwithacomfortablelife.HealsoorderedhiswifetobekindtoYusufandhadgoodhopesforhisfuture,becauseofhisfirmrighteousbehavior.Hesaidtohiswife,Makehisstaycomfortable,maybehewillprofitusorweshalladopthimasason.ThemanwhoboughtYusufwastheministerofEgyptatthetime,andhistitlewasAziz.AbuIshaqnarratedthatAbuUbaydahsaidthatAbdullahbinMasudsaid,Threehadthemostinsight:theAzizofEgypt,whosaidtohiswife,Makehisstaycomfortable,thewomanwhosaidtoherfather,Omyfather!Hirehim,(28:26)andAbuBakrAsSiddiqwhenheappointedUmarbinAlKhattabtobetheKhalifahafterhim,mayAllahbepleasedwiththemboth.(AtTabari16:19)



AllahsaidnextthatjustasHesavedYusuffromhisbrothers,ThusdidWeestablishYusufintheland,inreferencetoEgypt,thatWemightteachhimtheinterpretationofevents.theinterpretationofdreams,accordingtoMujahidandAsSuddi.(AtTabari16:20)Allahsaidnext,AndAllahhasfullpowerandcontroloverHisaffairsifHewillssomething,thenthereisnoavertingHisdecision,norcaniteverbestoppedorcontradicted.Rather,Allahhasfullpowerovereverythingandeveryoneelse.SaidbinJubayrsaidwhilecommentingonAllahsstatement,AndAllahhasfullpowerandcontroloverHisaffairsHedoeswhateverHewills.(AtTabari16:21)Allahsaid,butmostofmenknownot.meaning,havenoknowledgeofAllahswisdomwithregardstoHiscreation,compassionanddoingwhatHewills.Allahsaidnext,Andwhenheattained,inreferencetoProphetYusuf,peacebeuponhim,hisfullmanhood,soundinmindandperfectinbody,Wegavehimwisdomandknowledge,whichistheprophethoodthatAllahsenthimwithforthepeoplehelivedamong,thusWerewardthedoersofgood.becauseYusufusedtodogoodintheobedienceofAllahtheExalted.

{23.Andshe,inwhosehousehewas,soughttoseducehim(todoanevilact),andsheclosedthedoorsandsaid:Comeon,Oyou.Hesaid:IseekrefugeinAllah!Truly,heismyRabb!He

mademylivinginagreatcomfort!Verily,thewrongdoerswillneverbesuccessful.}

WifeoftheAzizlovesYusufandplotsagainstHim

AllahstatesthatthewifeoftheAzizofEgypt,inwhosehouseYusufresidedandwhosehusbandrecommendedthatshetakescareofhimandbegeneroustohim,triedtoseduceYusuf!Shecalledhimtodoanevilactwithher,becauseshelovedhimverymuch.Yusufwasveryhandsome,filledwithmanhoodandbeauty.Shebeautifiedherselfforhim,closedthedoorsandcalledhim,and(she)said:Comeon,Oyou.Buthecategoricallyrefusedhercall,Hesaid:IseekrefugeinAllah!Truly,heismyRabb!Hemademylivinginagreatcomfort!astheyusedtocallthechiefandmasteraRabb,Yusufsaidtoher,yourhusbandismymasterwhoprovidedmewithcomfortablelivingandwaskindtome,soIwillneverbetrayhimbycommittingimmoral



sinswithhiswife,Verily,thewrongdoerswillneverbesuccessful.ThiswassaidbyMujahid,AsSuddi,MuhammadbinIshaqandseveralothers.Thescholarsdifferintheirrecitationof,HaytaLaka,wherebyIbnAbbas,Mujahidandseveralotherscholarssaidthatitmeansthatshewascallinghimtoherself.(AtTabari16:27)AlBukharisaidIkrimahsaidthat,HaytaLakameans,comeon,Oyou,intheAramaiclanguage.AlBukharicollectedthisstatementfromIkrimahwithoutachainofnarration.(FathAlBari8:214)Otherscholarsreaditwiththemeaning,`Iamreadyforyou.IbnAbbas,AbuAbdurRahmanAsSulami,AbuWail,`IkrimahandQatadahwerereportedtohavereadthispartoftheAyahthiswayandexplaineditinthemannerwementioned,asIamreadyforyou.

{24.Andindeedshediddesirehim,andhewouldhaveinclinedtoherdesire,hadhenotseentheevidenceofhisLord.Thusitwas,thatWemightturnawayfromhimevilandimmovalsins.
