There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that weconsider to be most important.
Your scooter can provide many years ofservice and pleasure if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you canmeet on the road.
Some drivers do not see scooters becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear bright reflectiveclothing, position yourself so other driverscan see you, signal before turning orchanging lanes, and use your horn when itwill help others notice you.
It’s a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection,sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page ).
Pushing the limits is another major cause ofscooter crashes. Never ride beyond yourpersonal abilities or faster than conditionswarrant. Remember that alcohol, drugs,fatigue and inattention can significantlyreduce your ability to make goodjudgements and ride safely.

For your safety, we strongly recommendthat you always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet, eye protection, boots,gloves, trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt orjacket whenever you ride. Althoughcomplete protection is not possible, wearingproper gear can reduce the chance of injurywhen you ride.Following are suggestions to help youchoose proper gear.
Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even onedrink can reduce your ability to respond tochanging conditions, and your reaction timegets worse with every additional drink. Sodon’t drink and ride, and don’t let yourfriends drink and ride either.
For safe riding, it’s important to inspectyour scooter before every ride and performall recommended maintenance. Neverexceed load limits, and only use accessoriesthat have been approved by Honda for thisscooter. See page for more details.5

Your helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably andsecurely. A bright-coloured helmet canmake you more noticeable in traffic, as canreflective strips.
An open-face helmet offers some protection,but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protectyour eyes and help your vision.
In addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:
Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to helpprotect your feet and ankles.Leather gloves to keep your hands warmand help prevent blisters, cuts, burns andbruises.A motorcycle riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection. Bright-coloured and reflective clothing can helpmake you more noticeable in traffic. Besure to avoid loose clothes that could getcaught on any part of your scooter.

Your scooter has been designed to carryyou, one passenger and a limited amount ofcargo. When you add cargo or carry apassenger, you may feel some differenceduring acceleration and braking. But so longas you keep your scooter well-maintained,with good tyres and brakes, you can safelycarry loads within the given limits andguidelines.
However, exceeding the weight limit orcarrying an unbalanced load can seriouslyaffect your scooter’s handling, braking andstability. Non-Honda accessories, impropermodifications, and poor maintenance canalso reduce your safety margin.
The following pages give more specificinformation on loading, accessories andmodifications.
How much weight you put on your scooter,and how you load it, are important to yoursafety. Anytime you ride with a passengeror cargo you should be aware of thefollowing information.

Follow these guidelines whenever you carrya passenger or cargo:

Improperly loading your scooter can affectits stability and handling. Even if yourscooter is properly loaded, you should rideat reduced speeds whenever carrying cargo.
To prevent loose items from creating ah a z a r d , ma k e s u r e t h e c e n t e rcompartment, glove box is closed andthat any other cargo is securely tied downbefore you ride away.Place cargo weight as close to the centerof the scooter as possible.Balance cargo weight evenly on bothsides.
Your scooter is primarily intended fortransporting you and a passenger. You maywish to secure a jacket or other small itemsto the seat when you are not riding with apassenger.

We strongly recommend that you use onlyHonda Genuine Accessories that have beenspecifically designed and tested for yourscooter. Because Honda cannot test allother accessories, you must be personallyresponsible for proper selection, installationand use of non-Honda accessories. Do not pull a trailer or sidecar with yourscooter. This scooter was not designedfor these attachments, and their use canseriously impair your scooter’s handling.
We strongly advise you not to remove anyoriginal equipment or modify your scooterin any way that would change its design oroperation. Such changes could seriouslyimpair your scooter’s handling, stability andbraking, making it unsafe to ride.
Removing or modifying your lights,mufflers, emission control system or otherequipment can also make your scooterillegal.

This scooter is equipped with a CombinedBrake System. Operating the rear brakelever applies the rear brake and a portion ofthe f ront brake. For f ull brakingeffectiveness, use both the front and rearbrake lever simultaneously, as you wouldwith a conventional scooter braking system.
As with a conventional scooter brakingsystem, excessively hard application of thebrake controls may cause wheel lock,reducing control of the scooter.
For normal braking, apply both the frontand rear brake lever to match your roadspeed. For maximum braking, close thethrottle and firmly apply the front and rearbrake lever.

The recommended brake fluid is HondaDOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealedcontainer, or an equivalent.
Other Checks:Make sure there are no fluid leaks. Checkfor deterioration or cracks in the hoses andfittings.
Front Brake Fluid Level:With the scooter in an upright position,check the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark ( ). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark, check thebrake pads for wear (page ).
Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn, have your brake systeminspected for leaks.
This scooter has a hydraulic front discbrake.As the brake pads wear, brake fluid leveldrops.There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks.If the control lever free travel becomesexcessive and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page ),there is probably air in the brake systemand it must be bled. See your Honda dealerfor this service.

If adjustment is necessary, turn the rearbrake adjusting nut ( ).
Apply the brake several times and checkfor free wheel rotation after the brakelever is released.
If proper adjustment cannot be obtained bythis method, see your Honda dealer.
Adjust by turning the rear brake adjustingnut a half-turn at a time. Make sure the cut-out on the adjusting nut is seated on thebrake arm pin ( ) after making finalfreeplay adjustment.

The owner must properly maintain thecoolant to prevent freezing, overheating,and corrosion. Use only high qualityethylene glycol antif reeze containingcorrosion protection inhibitors specificallyrecommended for use in aluminum engines.(SEE ANTIFREEZE CONTAINER LABEL).
Use only low-mineral drinking water ordistilled water as a part of the antifreezesolution. Water that is high in mineralcontent or salt may be harmful to thealuminum engine.
Using coolant with silicate inhibitors maycause premature wear of water pump sealsor blockage of radiator passages.Using tap water may cause engine damage.
The factory provides a 50/50 solution ofantifreeze and distilled water in this scooter.This coolant solution is recommended formost operating temperatures and providesgood corrosion protection. A higherconcentration of antifreeze decreases thecooling system performance and isrecommended only when additionalprotection against freezing is needed. Aconcentration of less than 40/60 (40%antifreeze) will not provide proper corrosionprotection. There are two types of ‘‘gasohol’’:one containing ethanol, and the othercontaining methanol. Do not use petrol thatcontains more than 10 % ethanol. Do not usepetrol containing methanol (methyl or woodalcohol) that does not also containcosolvents and corrosion inhibitors formethanol. Keeping your tyres properly inf latedprovides the best combination of handling,tread life and riding comfort. The recommended ‘‘cold’’ tyre pressuresare:
Whenever you check the tyre pressures,you should also examine the tyre treads andsidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:
Look for:Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyre orthe tread. Replace the tyre if you find anybumps or bulges.Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre. Replacethe tyre if you can see fabric or cord.Excessive tread wear.
Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pullto the side of the road as soon as you cansafely and carefully inspect the tyres fordamage.
Always check air pressure when your tyresare ‘‘cold’’ when the scooter has beenparked for at least three hours. If a tyre is punctured or damaged, youshould replace it, not repair it. As discussedbelow, a tyre that is repaired, eithertemporarily or permanently, will have lowerspeed and performance limits than a newtyre.
A temporary repair, such as an externaltubeless tyre plug, may not be safe fornormal speeds and riding conditions. If atemporary or emergency repair is made to atyre, you should ride slowly and cautiouslyto a dealer and have the tyre replaced. Ifpossible, you should not carry a passengeror cargo until a new tyre is installed.
Even if a tyre is professionally repaired witha permanent internal patch plug, it will notbe as good as a new tyre. You should notexceed 80 km/h (50 mph) for the first 24hours, or 130 km/h (80 mph) at any timethereafter. In addition, you may not be ableto safely carry as much weight as with anew tyre. T heref ore, we stronglyrecommend that you replace a damagedtyre. If you choose to have a tyre repaired,be sure the wheel is balanced before youride.

Always follow the proper starting proceduredescribed below.
Your scooter’s exhaust contains poisonouscarbon monoxide gas. High levels of carbonmonoxide can collect rapidly in enclosedareas such as a garage. Do not run theengine with the garage door closed. Evenwith the door open, run the engine onlylong enough to move your scooter out ofthe garage.
Do not use the electric starter for more than5 seconds at a time. Release the start buttonfor approximately 10 seconds beforepressing it again.
If the scooter is over-turned, you must firstturn the ignition switch to the OFF positionand then inspect the scooter carefully.Refer to the ‘‘TAKING CARE OF THEUNEXPECTED’’ on page .
To protect the catalytic converter in yourscooter’s exhaust system, avoid extendingidling and the use of leaded petrol.

Engine oil quality is the chief factoraffecting engine service life. Change theengine oil as specified in the maintenanceschedule (page ).When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed moref r equent ly t han spec i f i ed in t hemaintenance schedule.
Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation. Donot throw it in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.
Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this is unlikelyunless you handle used oil on a daily basis,it is still advisable to thoroughly wash yourhands with soap and water as soon as possi-ble after handling used oil.

A defective catalytic converter contributesto air pollution, and can impair your engine’sperformance. Follow these guidelines toprotect your scooter’s catalytic converter.
Always use unleaded petrol. Even a smallamount of leaded petrol can contaminatethe catalyst metals, making the catalyticconverter ineffective.
