Welcome LETTER

If you haven’t been to the Ohio Design Center, do yourself and your home a favor, and explore a resource that the Cleveland market is fortunate to have. Hometrends was part of a recent panel that answered questions from professional designers and we were amazed by the amount of talent in that conference room. Aside from terrific stores and galleries within the walls of the Ohio Design Center, there are literally hundreds of professional designers available for any project, or even a question.

For those of you considering your own projects, the two features in this edition might prove resourceful, enlightening, or even inspirational. However, for some of us, they’ll be a pleasant “annoyance.” After getting to know these projects, the bar has been raised and future projects will likely be influenced by their good examples of smart trends. They’re both purpose-driven designs and boast a quality that we were impressed with. In fact, as a public service, these projects should come with a warning label that might read as follows:

“Warning: The projects contained in this edition of Hometrends might cause annoyance if A) you are dreaming of your own project, B) have already signed off on drawings, C) feel compelled to start a new project or D) have just finished your project and feel like it’s missing something. Readers may also experience a sense of euphoric inspiration that may lead to daydreaming and doodling on cocktail napkins. If said daydreaming (and doodling) lasts more than two hours, seek the immediate assistance of a certified Home Improvement Professional. No homeowners were harmed during the research for these stories.”

As we round the corner from Spring to Summer, there’s an automatic inclination to look at our homes and yards with a sense of optimism and pride for what is, and what could be. We hope that you’re inspired with the examples in this edition of Hometrends. Be sure to visit us at hometrendsmag.com for more photos and resource links on these projects.

Many thanks for having us into your homes and keep those letters and emails coming. Have fun with your projects and enjoy the summer!

Warm Regards,

Pete and Jennifer Moissis and the trends-savvy (and pleasantly annoyed) staff at Hometrends

Bath TRENDS

By Jennifer Atkins

Modern is not a typical hoMe style seen in northeast ohio. there’s the

perception that modern architecture is cold and box-like, but the style, which focuses on clean lines,

simplicity and functionality, is often airy and inviting, not to mention fascinating. It’s of little surprise

that Bob and Debbie Darden lean towards the clean, artsy yet often industrial look, since the busy couple

builds commercial and retail sites through their family-owned construction firm, The Darden Company.

“We have always wanted to build from the ground up,” explained Debbie. “So when we had maxed out

our current lot…we’d added on until you just couldn’t go anywhere but up anymore... Bob and I started

looking for a lot.”

Having found the perfect spot on Liberty Road, the Dardens approached Herschman Architects who had

worked closely with them on many commercial projects in the past. “They wanted a house that they could

build [through their construction company],” explained founder and project lead Jerry Herschman.

Herschman Architects specialize in mostly modern commercial buildings, but also pride themselves on

their extremely custom home designs. “We’ve been doing stuff like this for a long time and the key is the

little details – things that you won’t expect.” There are certainly many intriguing details throughout the

Dardens home. Herschman’s design creates the illusion of a series of geometric planes that intersect, but

never quite meet. This is partially accomplished with hanging flyovers floating over the living space, which

provide light that shines both up and down. Base molding was eliminated, instead the floors end with

a clean finish against a recessed beige wall, that are then covered by additional walls or panels that begin

several inches above the flooring. Finally, large windows virtually disappear against the beautiful Bentleyville

landscape. The structure itself is the decoration, a celebration of the beauty and simplicity of industrial

materials and a study of line and volume.

24 HOMETRENDSMAG.com

i t’s no surprise that the home is beautiful given the time and personal attention the Dardens were able to

give by serving as general contractors. Of course it also helped that the couple had a clear vision in mind.

This is true for their master bath as well. “We were always making notes… ‘in the next house, I want to have…’

lists,” explained Deb. “ We poured over all the home and architectural magazines and created a binder. We

actually saw a bathroom that merged with the master closet in one of those ‘great bathroom’ magazines.” The

room is large and uber-functional, combining the master walk-in closets with the master bath into a single

dressing room.

“When you stop to think about it, this room is private as a bathroom, but also by its very nature as the only

truly interior room in the house,” mused Hershman. “We wanted to make it very functional and then sound-

proofed all the walls, so that someone could utilize it without disturbing anyone else.” As a mom of three

(two fairly young), Debbie had other practical needs as well. “With the original layout, we would have had to

walk a long way around to get to the kids’ rooms,” said Debbie. “I wanted a door so that I could get there fast

if someone needed me.” To that end, what is the most unique feature of the room was created...the “secret

door.” From inside the master dressing room, the door looks just like any other, but…just try to enter from

the outer hallway! This hallway accesses the children’s rooms and is lined on one side with mahogany panels,

leFt to right Beneath warm built-in lighting, her vanity extends into a spacious make-up table, complete with a storage bench covered in a plush butternut. The custom cut of the granite with beveled edges and an extended apron helps to emphasize the bold square shape of the sink. a source of both architectural beauty and sound-proofing for the master suite behind them. To keep the look

consistent, the “secret door” was created to be hidden behind one of the panels in the more public hallway.

Besides the general structure of the room, the other challenge would be keeping the dressing room focused on

being very functional, yet consistent with the look of the entire house. After all, cubes and rectangles are not

typically the shapes that come to mind when thinking of a bathroom. Yet, these geometric forms are the theme

throughout the Darden’s home. To maintain an overall home aesthetic, small features of design are always used

to create a consistent background upon which the picture of each individual room is painted. For example, every

room has radiant heat, floating walls and neutral but warm colors. The dressing room would also need to blend

with the very artistic finishing of the master suite. Dark wood panels reach and stretch across the walls of the master,

and even the ceiling, to emphasize the shape and volume of the room. This creates a wide band of color that

eliminates the need for artwork, as well as serving as the headboard in the modern bedroom.

The design of the dressing room picks up on this banding treatment, but offers a new perspective. Where the

master features dark panels to bring attention to the volume of the room, the dressing room does the opposite,

using light to create that same feeling of expansive space. The two-person open shower, whirlpool tub and island

create a band of solid fixtures. This visual anchor allows the space to seemingly pull away from the center of the

HOMETRENDSMAG.com 27

preVious pageA king’s view of his world – the ultimate melding of the master bath and master closet has created a space striking in its openness, functionality and clean lines.

leFt to rightThe long skylight creates a negative rectangle that extends down through the shower ceiling allowing the air and light to pour into the space. Flanking either side of the shower, the doors to the his- and-hers water closets stand in perfect symmetry. The skylight also has sconces to ensure bright light shines down from above even on the cloudiest of Cleveland days. Industrial tile flows in elongated rectangular rows across the wall of the shower in a canvas of muted neutrals.

room, making it feel expansive. Additionally, the room is crowned with a long rectangular skylight that opens the

space vertically and brings in natural light. “On a clear day, you can see the tops of the trees as you shower,” points

out Debbie. “It’s great for knowing how to dress, you can tell it’s raining right away.” To offset the often dark

Cleveland sky, large sconces flank the recessed space providing a constant source of light from above.

The geometric lines created by the skylight cut into the ceiling over the far wall and emphasize the angular frame of

the open shower. The couple had wanted a complete departure from the glass-walled shower in their old house, so

they designed a more European-style open one. Easily big enough for a whole family, the spacious bathing space

features twin dual-headed rain shower heads that can be set to provide a gentle mist or a more forceful deluge.

Warmly lit by two large inset cans above and the slightly offset skylight, the shower is like a cove. “You’d think you

might be cold, but it’s not…and no foggy mirrors since there are no doors to trap the steam,” explains Debbie. To

ensure a cozy experience, heated floors warm the bathroom from the bottom up.

Industrial 2” rectangle tiles from Knotek run seamlessly across the bathroom half of the room, over the slight lip defining

the shower footprint, and up the shower walls. The subtle grey, white and beige sheets of tile also flow over the low wall

that separates the shower space from the room’s focal point. By design, the ultra-deep tub immediately draws the eye. The

clockwise starting with top leFtTwo people can literally immerse themselves in the bathing experience in the extra-deep Kohler Sok Overflowing Bath, which keeps the bathers warmer than a typical tub. Placed in line with the tub, the European-style open shower anchors the bathroom half of the enormous room, boasting twin rain shower heads. As the focus of the room, the unusual rectangular tub follows the geometric design echoed in the profile of the framework, doors and cabinetry throughout the room. Creating a relaxing waterfall effect, effervescent water runs off the infinity-edge basin into the reservoir, before being pumped back into the main basin by well-placed therapeutic jets.

HOMETRENDSMAG.com 31

flow of water over the sides is maintained by thirteen jets that pump water from the

reservoir that rings the rectangular basin. Besides catching the soothing waterfall, the

reservoir also serves as a great lazy river for Barbies!

Flanking either side of the shower behind mahogany wood doors are his-and hers-water

closets. “I only had a few requirements of the house. Besides radiant floors, the next

most important was that there were two toilets in the master bath,” Deb said. “It sounds

funny, but it’d be the middle of the night, I’d get up to take care of the baby and then I’d

find myself in line to use the bathroom in our old house. I wanted my own space with

no waiting.” For his part, Bob saw the perfect addition to add a touch of luxury while

perusing a plumbing catalog – toilet seats. The Washlet C110 by Toto offers a streamlined

control panel to one side that proffers a range of options for the temperature of the

seat, as well as the direction and force of the bidet. The height of personal comfort and

hygiene, the high-tech seat perches on a water-saver toilet.

Done in the same chocolate finish as the wood panels throughout the master

suite, the his-and her-vanities run along the outer walls of the bathroom

side of the room. Open bookshelves sit above low drawers that lock to keep

medicines and toiletries safe. The cream granite threaded with beige accents

is kept uncluttered with a minimal amount of decor. The white porcelain sinks

are predictably square, enhancing the angular shapes of the modern faucets.

The linens add a warm pop of earth tone color; butternut for her and rust for

him. The butternut is picked up again by the benches providing seating in the

dressing area and at Debbie’s vanity.

The rich chocolate color is picked up yet again in the custom-built closet

solutions created by the Cleveland Closet Company. To design the ultimate

dressing room, the Dardens hired professional Chuck Rudolph, who

owns the local small business with his son Jeff. “It was great fun to work

with Bob and Debbie. This project was not your run-of-the-mill job. It

was a challenge to meet their desires for contemporary design, but this is

the benefit of custom millwork versus a cookie-cutter solution.” Highly

customized, the dressing room’s far wall is lined with tilted racks with silver

rails for the couple’s shoes, next to cubbies for purses, boots or more shoes.

Her side features a spiral corner rack, while frosted glass cabinets offer

private storage on both sides of the room. Between the rods for clothes,

hooks extend from the molding for robes, dry-cleaning or a day’s outfit.

A neutral beige carpet offers comfort to bare feet fresh from the shower.

Too often closets are viewed as a necessary evil in the world of construction. A room to hold clothes –

it seems unlikely to hold any possibilities for creative design – boring, right? Yet, this is a room that

without a doubt is used every day. If ever there were a place to apply functional design, this is it. Here

are some tips to ensure the next closet you create from scratch is inspired and useful:

Want a Great Closet? 5 Tips to get You There

Plan earlyWhether you are renovating or building a new home, don’t wait until after the framing to design

your closet. Before building, meet with a closet organizer and determine what space you’ll need

to house all the shelves, racks, etc. “ I can’t tell you how many times a client couldn’t do what they

wanted, because they needed just another 2 feet for the closet that was wasted space in another

room,“ explained Chuck Rudolph of the Cleveland Closet Company. “Once the walls are framed

in and the drywall’s up, you’re stuck with the space.” Also, consider the proximity to other

relevant functioning rooms, like the bath or laundry, to really maximize efficiency.

not Just hanging out Don’t think in just rods and hangers. There are so many options for a closet design today – from

tilted shelves and drawers to racks that turn or rods that pull down. While it is maybe hard to

visualize just what will be the best fit, the key is knowing how many clothes you have and whether

you’ll store them hanging or folded. Rudolph explains, “the first thing we do is measure and

count everything from clothes to shoes to determine a customer’s needs. Once we draw it up on a

CAD in 3D, clients can really begin to picture how they would function in the space.”

Just missing the Valet It’s all about functionality and efficiency. Why walk from room to room to get dressed in the

morning? Whether you design a closet and bath in one, or more of a dressing room complete

with chairs and mirrors, you’ve got to get a handle on exactly how your family gets ready in

the morning to create a room that will streamline the process. Closets today are often all

about one-stop preparation. “The idea is that if someone has to catch a 5 am flight, they can get

dressed and pack without disturbing anyone else in the house,” said Rudolph.

luxurious finishes While a closet isn’t generally for public consumption, that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t shine.

Since you use it every day, pamper yourself and your clothes. Gaining rapidly in popularity,

cherry, mahogany and other deep rich stains lend a furniture-like appeal to your fixtures.

Stainless steel knobs and pulls and other accessories are both functional and beautiful. Granite

or marble add a sense of opulence to any counter space. Finally, don’t forget to pick out plenty of

warm lighting designed to make you and your clothes look their best.

Plan on holding it allWhy not really make your closet a true dressing room... the total storage solution? This is an

opportunity to forgo the large bureaus and keep your bedroom simple and uncluttered. Islands in the

closet are the hot new trend. An elegant storage solution, an island’s top is also functional, providing

space for folding clothes or filling up a suitcase. Perch a T.V. or music center on top and you’ve

created a modern centerpiece for a room that meets your needs for beauty and efficiency!

34 HOMETRENDSMAG.com

leFt The tall island features stacks of drawers for easy access to folded clothes and personal items. Rows of shoes sit on tilted shelves behind shiny rails for easy organization and viewing. An industrial stainless steel door pulls down to reveal the laundry room and waiting hampers next door. Bars extend from between closet units to provide a handy hanging place for matching elements of an outfit or putting away dry-cleaning.

rightThe Cleveland Closet Company designed the closet to hold all of the couple’s effects, eliminating the need for dressers in the master bedroom.

HOMETRENDSMAG.com 35

Sitting in line with the tub, the rectangular island is an impressive storage fixture balancing the tub on

the virtual line down the room’s center. A warmly-colored single piece of granite, the countertop is shot

through with complimentary browns and rusts. The stone was chosen specifically for its properties as a visual

“extension of the wood.” Placed on top of the island is a flat-screen T.V. offering a romantic movie for an

evening soak or the morning news during a shower. Simple yet elegant stainless drawer pulls compliment the

finish on the bathroom fixtures, pulling the two separate spaces into a cohesive room.

Ringed by opulent dark wood, this expansive space is truly uber-functional. “My favorite thing about [the

room] is that it is so open. Sometimes it’s so overwhelming, because all of your choices are available to you,”

laughed Deb. “I also like that there are drawers and cabinets for both of us, because even if you hang all

your clothes, you still need a place to store other stuff.” Another cool feature of the room takes particular

advantage of Hershman placing the laundryroom right next door. An industrial stainless steel door pulls

down to allow access to the “to-do” laundry bin in the next room. It is simply one of the more obvious signs

that the key focus of design was consideration of how the family would live in the space and optimizing that.

It is no surprise that the Dardens entire home is simply gorgeous, given the personal attention they were able

to give to the design and building process by serving as the general contractors. But what is a surprise is that

they were able to continue this focus on architectural line in the most challenging places to do so – the master

bath and closet. For any dream home to work, it must be like a cake, ingredients of all kind mixed together to

create the perfect concoction. While Hershman’s design aesthetic serves as the flour, the Dardens themselves

drove the functionality and edited details that are the spice and flavoring to this key room.

Feature ARTICLE

By Beth A. Kapes

Maybe it was the tropical state of Mind the JiMMy buffett

concert put them in the night before, or possibly their yearning for Caribbean-like

breezes that lured them to the just-listed lakefront home in Bay Village. Whatever the

influence may have been, once stepping foot inside, the couple knew they were on their

way home.

Even though there was no intention of leaving their long-established address in nearby

Lakewood, it was the Lake Road Dutch colonial’s charm and location that won this native

Northeast Ohio couple over – and within 24 hours, the home was theirs. While dreams of

renovating began to inspire, these were temporarily put on hold as the country reeled from

the attacks of September 11 just days after their purchase. Yet, this very frightening time

only caused them to embrace a new life on the water by taking steps toward restoring and

embellishing the home with personal touches to fit their lifestyle.

They admit that their first goal was to make Lake Erie their playground with the

addition of a seawall and boatlift at the bottom of the home’s multi-level deck and

sloping, lush 525-foot deep yard. Once their boat’s dock was complete, architect Mark

Chernisky, of Chernisky Residential Designs, set out to redesign the 1923 home’s

structure. With a plan in hand, the couple began their own demolition of the entire

interior and exterior on Labor Day of 2003. This was not to be an easy task, with nine

dumpsters of debris leaving the site, including the removal of the original boiler that

ran through the middle of the home’s four floors.

44 HOMETRENDSMAG.com

T he primary goal was an open floor plan that would allow for unparalleled views of the water from

each room – a space that would welcome the couple’s 40-plus family members and countless

friends for memorable gatherings. In addition to removing and relocating walls to open the kitchen and

dining areas, space was increased through a two-story addition that would house a family room and a

second-level master bath. While nothing from the home’s original workings could be saved due to age, the

homeowners knew they wanted to maintain the structure’s façade and design, including the back porch that

was compromised due to sinking joist supports.

Guided by Patrick Kilbane of MK Masonry, tradesmen transformed and enhanced the home throughout

the next 10 months, including the addition of an interior foyer and front porch featuring an updated stone

fascia. As every internal mechanism of the home received a much-needed update, the true transformation

was taking place through details that truly represented the homeowners’ vision and love for life. While skilled

craftsman added elements such as a coffered ceiling in the family room and intricate moldings throughout,

Lee Meier Interiors was developing special touches that would make the couple’s house a home. A full-service

West Side interior design firm, Lee Meier Interiors had been delivering unique looks for homes, businesses

and commercial spaces for over 40 years, and it was this history and the firm’s Principal in Charge of

Design and Owner, Paul McClure, Allied Member, A.S.I.D., that combined the home’s potential with the

homeowners’ dreams to convey the ultimate end result.

preVious spread Walking in the front door, guests are welcomed with an unparalleled lake view accompanied by rich furnishings and personal touches – a nod to the tropical treasures that await.

leFt to rightThe step-down family room is a reflection of the well thought-out addition by showcasing a coffered ceiling complete with sea grass-like insets and bamboo furnishings. Another original painting of a leopard is showcased in this second floor den that also serves as a quiet workspace. Looking into the living room, a panoramic view of one of the couple’s favorite vacation spots in Wyoming flanks the wall. The living room seen from the dining room glows with a color inspired by a sunset enjoyed on Kapalua Bay. Details abound from the life-size candelabras flanking the refurbished fireplace, which was rebuilt to ‘fit’ the couples’ favorite oil painting.

“One of Paul’s greatest strengths is tapping into the emotional connection each client has, and wants to

convey, with their living space,” said Kim Mager, Marketing Manager for Lee Meier Interiors. “With over 25

years of experience, he has the industry knowledge and expertise to see out unique elements, from custom

furniture, lighting, artwork and accessories to add that extra layer of personality, capturing the mood, feeling

or style of the client.”

‘Capturing the mood’ became the operative phrase as each design element was introduced in the home.

Starting where the hub of entertaining would occur, the kitchen emits warmth through cherry cabinetry and

island base, all topped with distinct Persia granite and grounded with porcelain tile set in a Versailles pattern.

Across from the central island, complete with a tucked away microwave and convection oven, glass front doors

on the wet bar’s upper cabinetry are lit from within to display special pieces the couple have collected over

the years. In addition to a porcelain backsplash inset with stainless accents, top-of-the-line appliances were a

must for the couple that admits their love of cooking was the reason for the remodel, allowing them to serve

special meals to family and friends at dinner parties – both inside and on their spacious deck during warm

summer evenings.

leFt to rightA look into the central hum of the home: the couples’ gourmet kitchen. Stepping up from the added family room, custom cabinetry is showcased by granite counters and porcelain tile flooring set in a Versailles pattern. The porcelain backsplash tiles are inset with stainless steel accents, which highlight the dual-fuel Dacor oven. Pull-out spice racks were a must for the avid cooks and entertainers.

48 HOMETRENDSMAG.com

leFt to rightThe showcase of the home is the dining room ceiling mural, which was handcrafted by local artist Andy Bruckman in just three days. Looking from the foyer into the living room, the eye turns toward the marble-inset floor. The dining room’s table, set for the next gathering, glows from the chandelier’s hand-polished crystals and cobalt glass accents above. The foyer showcases a rich red wallpaper that peeks from a doorway that is seen from the island barstools.

HOMETRENDSMAG.com 49

While the kitchen welcomes its guests with strategically-placed counter stools that offer lakefront

views that skirt the downtown skyline and a just-a-swivel-away picture window that allows glimpses

of a stone waterfall and pond built by the owners, its what lays beyond that captures the eye and

evokes interest at every turn. Case in point: the hallway leading from the kitchen to the upstairs

is elegantly covered with a red wallpaper enhanced by a gold fleur-de-lis pattern, but as the paper

ends toward the dining room entrance, the fun begins. Local artist, Andy Bruckman, sketched

an iguana known as “Isabel” to subtly end the paper and enhance the homeowner’s light-

hearted approach to life. Just around the corner, the animal theme continues with

a small, luxurious powder room whose walls are adorned with a frog and lizard wall

cover design by Taibaut and a rough-cut granite bowl sink complimented by antique-

reproduction dolphin wall sconces, a mini-crystal chandelier and monkey-butt

tissue holder.

Once entering the dining room, the eye is immediately drawn to the ceiling.

Knowing the couple’s love for the tropics, McClure had Bruckman work his magic

on a dramatic mural complete with ripped-edged banana tree leafs. Taking just

three days to complete, the mural represents sultry nights and is enhanced by an

impressive Chelsea House crystal chandelier that enchants diners from their seats

below with its hand polished lead crystals and cobalt glass accents, a reproduction

from the collection of the Russian Czar’s palace. Not to miss a detail, the wall color

in both the dining room and adjacent living room was inspired by a sunset the

couple enjoyed during a trip to Kapalua Bay – giving the same glowing effect throughout the space

overlooking the water in Ohio, a view expanded by the large living room window.

“Lee Meier Interiors’ designers are passionate about using local artists and craftsmen, which can add a truly

unique and custom feel to any design project, on any budget,” Mager explained. “This can be seen through

the combination of whimsical and traditional touches that made this lakefront home complete.”

Further tropical touches are enjoyed in the nearby step-down family room, with the coffered ceiling,

spaces finished with wallpaper replicating seagrass and bamboo furnishings by Lane Venture. Original

oak woodwork was painted white throughout the home, while the living room maintains the original

fireplace, which was restored by another local artisan, Michael Jablonski Custom Woodworking in

Cleveland. A design driven by the size of the homeowners’ favorite oil painting, Jablonski crafted

the mantle within inches of the artwork’s dimensions in addition to adding unfilled limestone and

fabricated trim where the fleur-de-lis pattern is repeated in inset accents.

When approaching the second floor, personal touches abound. With an eye to the past, grave

rubbings from Westminster Abbey completed by the homeowner’s parents take center stage along

the hall that leads to a home office complete with a dramatic original oil painting of a leopard

overlooking the space. Just beyond, a full bath is encased in sea glass-like colors through white

porcelain broken joint set, wave deco tile on surrounding walls and again on the floor that are

highlighted by a Schumacher mosaic fish theme wallpaper. These same serene colors are used

throughout the diagonal guest bedroom.

Preserving Pieces of In the late twenties, the porch went

across the front and back of the

house with a cistern underneath the

back. There were originally French

Doors from living room to back

porch (Lake Rd. side) and from

dining room to front porch.

This was taken in the early thirties

from the beach facing Huntington

Park – beach goers could walk

from Eagle Cliff on the west to

Huntington Beach on the east.

These men are Paul D. Jones (left) and Daniel W. Jones (right). Dan built the feature home, while his brother Paul built the “sister house” next door. They are sitting on the back porch.

T he Bay Village lakefront home featured is a part of history that began long before it was built in 1923. While waterfront homes on Lake Road today conjure images of the good life, this property and much of the surrounding shoreline was

originally used to farm fruits, vegetables and miles of grape vineyards from the city’s beginnings in the early 1800s. As time progressed, pieces of farms were sold, allowing for homes to be established. Interestingly, the featured home came to be due to the desire of two brothers to develop their dream along the lake in Bay Village, building two “sister houses” side by side, mirror images of the other. Daniel W. Jones, the Treasurer of The Cuyahoga Company built his gambrel shaped roof home in 1923. During the same year, his brother Paul D. Jones, a Vice President of The Guarantee Title and Trust Co., constructed his Dutch colonial next door, according to William Krause, Archivist, Bay Village Historical Society. At that time, the yards facing the lakeside were ample, in addition to yards of sandy beach for the Jones’ family’s enjoyment. While time and erosion has changed much of the landscape, the connection to the past will remain due to the efforts of today’s homeowners who are preserving pieces of dreams built years ago.

Note to the reader: Look for our upcoming story of the restoration of the Bay Village featured home’s “sister house!”

Preserving Pieces of Lakefront Living

This snowman built in the center of the yard shows the size of the front yard. The house in the background is another example of the popularity of porches during the time period.

This picture gives an idea of the

width of the yards. The flower-

decorated pergola in the middle of

the two houses, sits next to the back

porch. Between the sister houses is

clockwise From BottomThe master suite is the ultimate in relaxation with rich sculpted carpet and dark wood furnishings. A king size master bed is positioned to allow the couple to view the lake each evening and when waking in the morning. A large walk-in closet off the master bath is the pinnacle of organization, complete with custom shelving. The guest bedroom features sea foam green walls and custom draperies.

HOMETRENDSMAG.com 55

A spacious master suite that spans the entire length of

the back of the house lies steps away with a complete

wall of windows, which face the lake and allow for

beneficial views from the bed and continue into the

adjoining master bath. Here, a large sunken tub makes

the most of the view as does the glass walls of the large

walk-in shower. The entire space is bathed in palm

frond wallpaper and intricate porcelain tile work.

Special touches are seen in the amber glass hardware

that accentuates the dark wood vanity and a large walk-in

closet pays attention to organization through ample

shelving. In the central bar area souvenirs from trips to

the tropics and beyond fill the walls. With the enduring

emphasis to fun, this couple will continue in their home

along the lake. With a nod to their favorite group The

Beatles’ famous lyrics, these two have memories longer

than the road that stretches out ahead – and it’s here that

they always know they’re on their way home.
