It has a staff of more than 325 physicians in almost all medical specialties and over 1,000 employees.

inpatient Services

NeonatologistsThe Mid-Hudson Valley’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, offers a host of state-of-the-art technologies and trained personnel to ensure the best outcome for extremely premature newborns and other infants with special medical needs. When a baby is prematurely born, or is an at-term newborn with critical medical issues, a neonatologist joins the team of hospital caregivers. Neonatologists are pediatricians specializing in the care of newborns, and they are available around the clock to provide the latest in diagnosis and treatment. They work with other NICU staff to ensure the highest level of sophisticated care for the young patient’s lungs and airways, cardiovascular system, brain and nervous system, skin, nutritional needs, and overall health.

Surgical Physician AssistantsEach of our hospitals is committed to providing the best care possible for inpatients. Among the services that allow us to do so is our staff of surgical physician assistants. Physician assistants (PAs) are trained in the same academic coursework as are physicians, and are medically licensed to examine, diagnose, and treat patients. Surgical PAs are specially trained in operative procedures and assist the surgeon in the operating room. In addition, surgical PAs in our hospitals are on duty day and night, every day of the year, to monitor patients after surgery and ensure continuity of high quality care. Every patient’s primary care physician, and other caregivers in and outside the hospital, work with the PAs as a patient-oriented team to deliver quality, cost-effective care for any issue that may arise.

HospitalistsHospitalists, available at all three hospitals, are fully trained and board-certified medical doctors who specialize in the care of patients admitted to the hospital. With the focus of their practice on inpatient care, Hospitalists are attentive to the medical needs of each patient on a daily basis. If you are admitted for a stay in the hospital, your primary care physician will be in frequent contact with the Hospitalist, as will any other specialists you may be seeing. In addition to overseeing and evaluating your medical treatment, Hospitalists are available to answer questions, and will write prescriptions for any necessary medications upon discharge. Because Hospitalists do not see patients outside the hospital, your primary care provider once again is your care-managing doctor after discharge. If you do not have a primary care physician, the Hospitalists and other clinical staff can recommend local providers.

IntensivistsVassar Brothers Medical Center is proud to bring an additional group of medical specialists—Intensivists—to its team of inpatient caregivers for hospitalized patients. Intensivists are physicians with advanced training in the care of critically ill or injured patients. Intensivists apply their knowledge and special skills to the needs of patients in the intensive care unit, as well as in other areas of the hospital as needed. Intensivists work closely with other doctors, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, nutritionists, and other caregivers to ensure the best critical care. With an around-the-clock presence at the hospital, Intensivists are always available to attend incoming emergency room patients, patients already in intensive care, or any other inpatient needing new or additional critical support.

The Breast Center at The Dyson Center for Cancer Care looks to address the individual needs of each patient. By integrating state-of-the-art services with

the human touch of caring professionals, the Breast Center creates a supportive health care experience that facilitates short and long-term healing. Our highly specialized team of skilled and compassionate clinicians is committed to providing patients and their families with the comfort, care and support they deserve as they navigate this challenging time in their lives.

The team is composed of Director of Breast Surgery Dr. Angela J. Keleher. She has many years of experience practicing breast surgery including a clinical breast fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is joined by Dr. Hank Schmidt whose training includes Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Chicago, General Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, and

PhD program from the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics. Another integral part of our team is Sara Winterleitner, Nurse Practitioner, who is specialty trained and certified in Oncology. The team was most recently joined by Dr. Gregory J. Zanieski whose training includes Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Previously he was Chief Resident at the New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn.

The Dyson Center for Cancer Care at Vassar Brothers Medical Center provides the highest level of multidisciplinary approach to cancer diagnosis and treatment. It’s no wonder that Health Quest’s division of cardiothoracic surgery at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie was voted one of America’s

top 100 facilities for cardiovascular services by the medical journal Modern Healthcare. It has been rated in the top five percent in the nation for cardiac surgery by HealthGrades® three years in a row, and is currently ranked fourth in New York State (2011). The department is led by New York State’s leading cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Mohan Sarabu, FACS, FACC, who brings a truly rare level of passion and technique to his craft; so much so that he was named Top Doctor in 2004 by New York magazine as well as 2007 Physician of the Year by the hospital itself.

Dr. Sarabu heads a first-rate team of cardiothoracic surgeons with nearly a century of experience. The team includes Dr. Peter Zakow, FACS, FACC, Dr. Rohit Shahani, MCh, FACS, FACC and Dr. Arun Bhutani, MBBS, along with a host of cardiothoracic and critical care nurses, physical therapists, and nutritionists, all of whom are trained to deliver the most sophisticated diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services available.

Born into a family of medical practitioners, it seemed fated that Dr. Steven Ugras would also end up in the field. He chose to specialize in hand surgery

because he wanted to be in a field that was cutting-edge, where he’d be able to experience a lot of advances over the span of his lifetime. Dr. Ugras joins Health Quest after finishing a fellowship in hand surgery at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. Prior to that, he was a general surgery resident at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey. He received his MD from the

University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J.

Dr. Ugras is excited to be working in the Poughkeepsie Division of General Surgery’s office. A wide range of procedures are available in Dr. Ugras’s office, and in the short time since his practice has opened its doors, he’s welcomed returning patients and many referrals. Currently, Dr. Ugras is concentrating on providing patients with a pleasant medical experience and he looks forward to serving the Poughkeepsie community.

For over two decades, Dr. James A. Wing has been a surgeon at Northern Dutchess Hospital, providing the highest quality of care for a variety of health problems.

Dr. Wing received his medical training in Italy at the University of Bologna, and has been board-certified in general surgery since 1986. He did his residency in general surgery at Nassau County Medical Center, where he stayed on as a staff physician while also teaching advanced trauma life support at the State University of New York, Stony Brook.

Dr. Wing enjoys his specialty because he can see how much patients’ lives can improve through surgery. Over the years, he has witnessed advances in surgical methods that allow him to offer procedures that are increasingly easier on patients. In addition, better medications mean

improved post-operative comfort. Dr. Brian Binetti brings to the Division of General

Surgery in Rhinebeck his training in the latest, minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopy and robotics. Dr. Binetti received his MD from Saint George’s University, and was awarded the Herbert A. Schulte Award for excellence in surgery during his residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Since that residency Dr. Binetti has been at the Albany Medical College as a Fellow in minimally invasive surgery, and also served as a clinical instructor before joining HQMP.

Before Health Quest’s Division of Maternal Fetal Health Medicine opened in 2008, pregnant women in need of specialized care had to travel outside the

region for high-quality services. Heading this full-time specialty department—the only one of its kind in the Hud-son Valley—is Dr. Kimberly Heller, who has been a prac-ticing obstetrician/gynecologist since 1985. Dr. Heller is a resource for high-risk mothers as well as other practitioners needing referrals for their patients. A key component of Dr.

Heller’s approach is pre-conception counseling, in which she advises mothers-to-be on the level of risk, if any, during pregnancy due to their personal medical history.

Dr. Heller uses specialized ultrasound monitoring techniques to support her high-risk patients. She is a two-time recipient of the APGO Medical Education Excellence in Teaching Award and previously served as the associate director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Pennsylvania’s Wellspan Health System.

The crown jewel and what distinguishes the OB/GYN Rhinebeck and Kingston practice is its full-time midwifery services. This practice is the only one in

the region to offer midwifery services 24/7, giving women the choice to give birth with a midwife or a physician. The practice also offers a range of gynecological care for women, including annual exams, family planning and pre-and post-menopausal care, in addition to prenatal, labor, and delivery care.

The office is lead by board-certified physicians Dr. Ely Nathan and Dr. Dean Bloch. Dr. Nathan earned his Medical Degree at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Before moving to his practice in Rhinebeck, he was a full-time attending OB/GYN at Bassett Healthcare.

Obstetrics and gynecology is a blend of approaches for Dr. Dean Bloch who also brings a background in integrative medicine to the practice. Dr. Bloch completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and received his MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He has been in practice in the Hudson Valley for more than 20 years.

A unified approach is also evident in the team that practices at the offices. The doctors are complemented by a competent, caring team of Certified Nurse Midwives: Suzanne Berger, Julie Denney, Amanda Chapin, and Nurse Practitioners: Jeanne Valentine-Chase and Eileen Meltzer. They have a combined total of over a century of experience providing quality health care for women.

With three offices in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie, Health Quest’s Obstetrics & Gynecology division offers patients the expertise of 12 OB/GYN specialists. Dedicated to the health of women in the

community for several decades, the team includes Dr. Jose Baez, Dr. Donna J. Kasello, Dr. Stacey Madoff, Dr. Thomas M. Murray, Dr. Azzam M. Salem, Dr. Rajan Sriskandarajah, Dr. Robert A. Stern, Dr. Jed L. Turk, Dr. Peter Wright III, Dr. Lawrence A. Zolnik, and Ann Bollmann, PA. The newest addition to the team is Dr. Obosa Osawe, who joins Health Quest’s OB/GYN division after a residency at Ohio State University’s department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Among the procedures offered are a full range of outpatient diagnostic and surgical procedures including preventative care; annual health screening for women of all ages; pre-conception counseling; birth control management; prenatal care; infertility evaluation and treatment; endometrial ablation; hysterectomy; laparoscopic surgeries; in-office tubal sterilization procedures: Essure, Adiana; care for endometriosis, fibroids, and urinary incontinence. In addition, Dr. Turk and Dr. Kasello perform minimally invasive surgeries at Vassar Brothers Medical Center using the da Vinci Surgical System®, which employs state-of-the-art robotics.

Dr. David Kerner was compelled to enter health care after surviving leukemia as a child, and became a family practitioner in 1993. A strong interest in

the workings of the human body led him to study biology, anatomy, and physiology, and he pursued his doctorate in osteopathy because of that discipline’s highly personalized approach to patient care.

Dr. Kerner has also been a preceptor of Marist College sports medicine students, something he sees as a way of

Dr. Heffernan shares the Highland office with Dr. Mary Dyer, who joined him in 1999. She attended College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, before earning her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. As a primary care physician, Dr. David S. Cho enjoys guiding patients toward better health and seeing

them improve over time, celebrating with them in their physical achievements, as well as providing them comfort during times of illness and grief. Dr. Cho offers the sort of “old school” approach to doctoring that many patients long for: continuity of care wherever his patients need him—from routine office visits, to house calls, to attending them at the hospital. He believes that when a patient is ill, having their primary care doctor involved gives a much needed sense of comfort as he or she navigates the anxiety and physical stress that can arise.

Families struggling with mental illness are offered an integrated, comprehensive, and complementary schedule of recognized treatment approaches,

including group and individual therapy, art therapy, behavior therapy, medication and illness education, and substance abuse care at Health Quest’s Division of Psychiatry at Stoneleigh Psychiatric Associates in Carmel. The team is led by Dr. Yelena Yermak, a graduate of Albany Medical College who pursued postdoctoral training via a residency in psychiatry at the Harvard Longwood Residency Training Program in Boston, later becoming a chief clinical fellow in consultation psychiatry at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

The practice also includes Dr. Andy Casimir, who has been on the staff of Putnam Hospital Center since 2007. Dr. Casimir received his MD from Georgetown University and completed his psychiatric residency at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. John J. Wang recently joined the practice after serving as a clinical assistant professor at the NYU School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and geriatrics fellowship at NYU School of Medicine.
