Homemade Lava Lamp

Instructions A perfect project for kids 1-100

I. Supplies Needed ● 1 paper towel roll

● 4 paper towels

● 1 mason jar

● 1 mason jar lid

● 1 water bottle

● 1 water bottle lid-

● 1 tbsp water

● 1 measuring spoon (tbsp)

● 1 food dye package

● 1 food dye vial in the desired color-

● 1 bottle of baby oil

● 1 baby oil bottle lid-

● 1 cup baby oil^

● 1 measuring cup (1 cup)

● 1 alka-seltzer packet*-

● 1 alka-seltzer tablet*^-

*more as needed

^toxic if consumed in a large quantity

- choking hazard

II. 60 Step Instructions ` A. Preparing the Workspace

1. Pick up the paper towel roll

2. Rip off two (2) connected paper towels on the second dotted line

3. Fold the ripped paper towel in half on the remaining dotted line

4. Place the folded paper towel in front of you

5. Pick up the mason jar

6. Put the mason jar on the paper towel

7. Unscrew lid on mason jar

8. Take the mason jar lid off

B. Adding the Water 9. Unscrew the water bottle lid from water bottle

10. Take the water bottle lid off

11. Pour water from the water bottle into the measuring

spoon until the measuring spoon is full (1 tbsp)

12. Put the water collected in the measuring spoon into the

mason jar

13. Place measuring spoon on paper towel

14. Pick up the water bottle lid

15. Put the water bottle lid on the water bottle

16. Screw the water bottle lid back on the

water bottle 17. C. Adding the Food Dye 18. Pick up the food dye package

19. Open food dye package

20. Take out the food dye vial in the desired color

21. Open the food dye vial of the desired color by gently pushing the top

to one side

22. Hold the vial of the desired color over the mason jar

23. Squeeze the dye vial of the desired color until two droplets fall into the mason jar

24. Place lid back on the food dye vial of the desired color

25. Put food dye vial of the desired color back into package

26. Close the food dye package

27. Put the food dye package down

D. Adding the Baby Oil 28. Pick up the baby oil bottle

29. Unscrew the lid off of the baby oil bottle

30. Take the baby oil bottle lid off the baby oil bottle

31. Pour baby oil into measuring cup until it reaches the line marked 1 cup

32. Pour the contents of the measuring cup into the mason jar

33. Place the lid of the baby oil bottle on the baby oil bottle

34. Screw the baby oil lid back on the baby oil bottle

35. Take the paper towel roll

36. Rip off one (1) paper towel along the dotted line

37. Wipe the inside of the measuring cup with the new paper towel

38. Leave the paper towel in the measuring cup

E. Adding the Alka-seltzer Tablet 39. Pick up the alka-seltzer packet

40. Tear the alka-seltzer packet

41. Take one alka seltzer tablet out

42. Hold the alka-seltzer tablet over the middle of the mason jar

43. Drop the tablet into the mason jar

F. Finishing Touches 44. Put the mason jar lid

onto the mason jar

45. Screw the mason jar lid on

46. Admire your amazing homemade lava lamp

G. Continuing the Effect 47. Unscrew mason jar lid from mason jar

48. Add another alka-seltzer tablet

49. Put the mason jar lid onto the mason jar

50. Screw the mason jar lid on

51. Repeat steps 46-48 until bored

H. Clean up 51. Pick up paper towels

52. Wipe up any oil, water, and/or food dye that is on your workspace with the paper towel

53. Pick up the measuring cup

54. Wash out the measuring cup under warm water from a sink until all of the baby oil is

removed

55. Tear off another paper towel

56. Use the paper towel to dry all water from the measuring cup

57. Put the measuring cup back where it belongs

58. Use the paper towel to dry all water from the measuring spoon

59. Put the measuring spoon back where it belongs

60. Throw away the four (4) paper towels you used

III. Simplified Instructions 1. Prepare your workspace by laying down a folded paper towel

2. Add one tablespoon of water to the mason jar

3. Add a few drops of the desired color of food dye

4. Add a cup of baby oil

5. Add an alka-seltzer tablet

6. Admire your amazing homemade lava lamp

7. Add more alka-seltzer tablets to continue the effect

8. Clean up after you are done
