9 Spiff up the front yardRefresh your front yard according to the season. In spring,summer and fall, trim back dead plants and foliage andplant attractive annuals or perennials in flowerbeds. Inwinter, keep the walkway shoveled and cut back any treeor shrub branches damaged by heavy snowfall. A pair ofplanters flanking the front door and filled with seasonalarrangements instantly conveys pride of ownership.

10 Tend the backyardSimple fix-its willmake the most of your existing yardlayout. Replace any damaged boards on your deck orfence, and apply a fresh coat of paint, or stain and sealantif the finish needs it. Weed and groom your garden andadd some perennials for colour when in-season. If kids’toys are taking over the space, put some in storage.

It is great to feel cozy in the winter with warm colors and soft, fluffy

fabrics. In spring & summer however, a cool, airy look is more

appealing. Here are some simple ideas for transforming the look of

your home with the freshness of spring...

1. Remove your cozy fluffy throws and replace with soft cotton or silk

throws for those warmer months. Everything should be clean and

refreshing, light and tranquil. Choose sheer fabrics, linens, and open

weave textiles.

2. Remove the toasty down-filled duvet from your bed in the spring and

substitute for a light cotton bedspread or a simple cotton blanket.

Choose a shade that will go well with your existing curtains and paint

colour.

3. Floral arrangements of pine and holiday colours can be changed for

light, colourful ones for the spring and summer. Put away dark brass

or pottery containers and bring out clear glass or crystal vases.

4. Change dark-patterned decorative pillows by covering them with

fresh, floral prints or plaids for warmer weather. Either change out the

pillows with a second set or alternate the decorative zippered covers.

5. If you have a collection of plates on display, put classic holiday

designs away for the winter and replace with some cherished floral

china from grandma.

6. Have your draperies made so they are reversible allowing you to

easily turn them from lively to neutral with the seasonal changes.

7. Be sure to put garden magazines and flower books out on the coffee

table in the spring and summer. That will help bring the outside in and

add color to your interior.

8. Change your burgundy candles for some spring colours: think Easter

with shades of lavender, rose, and pale yellows.

Candles are a great spring décor home accent. Candles can be calming,

energizing, inspiring, beautiful, elegant, and simply smell good.

Depending on the scent of your candles, you can change the mood of

your home. Candles are great no matter what time of the year it is. How

about choosing candles in bright spring colors and fragrances? Adding

some spring candles can lift your spirits and add that special homey glow

no matter what season.

Add spring decorating colors to your home. Towels offer a quick and

easy room makeover. In your kitchen and your bathrooms add some

bright, bold colors that signify spring, birth, and renewal. These little

touches can make a huge difference in not only your attitude about

cleaning and decorating but also your attitude about cooking.

Tips:

• Keep spring and summer colours and accessories light, both in feel and

color.

• Changing with the seasons gives you an opportunity to get out some

long-lost pieces and make them the center of attention for a while. It’s

also a time to recycle tired items that you no longer wish to keep.

• If winter seems especially long, forget the calendar and get your spring

things out. You may still need the warm blankets, but the look can be

light and uplifting.

• Organization is very important in the seasonal home. Storing items in

containers by season can help slipcovers, pillows, and linens to be on

hand for quick changes. Once you develop your seasonal style keep

looking on your shopping trips for the perfect accessories to add to

your rooms. Don’t forget that “less is best”

• Only buy what you love and not because it’s on sale.

Here are some tips to tackle spring cleaning:

• Always start at the top of the room and work your way down.

• Always clean top to bottom. When you dust, start at the top and work

down.

• Take all your cleaning tools with you into each room to avoid unnec-

essary trips back and forth: use a container to keep all your spray

bottles and dust rags together.

• No distractions: unplug the phone and the turn off the T.V. – it is best

to listen to some energetic music.

• Eliminate clutter. An uncluttered home looks better than one that is

dust-free but strewn with odds and ends.

• Clean & de-clutter as you go! It takes a lot less time to remove new dirt

than old, and to clean and put away stuff as you use it, than it is to clean

and store the pile-up you can accumulate.

• Ahouse that smells fresh will give the impression of cleanliness. Leave

baking soda on carpeting for the night to absorb musty odors, vacuum

in the morning.

• Keep a big astro-turf mat on the porch to cut down on tracked-in dirt.

• Keep a basket in the kitchen (or near hallway table) for the mail, news-

paper, car keys to help with clutter.

• Keep a hamper in every bathroom.

•Make everyone in charge of making his or her own bed and picking up

their stuff.

• Always pick up the T.V. room before bedtime and start the dishwasher

on your way to bed. It’ll work while you sleep.

• Prioritize; if your time is limited decide what is most important.

• It’s important to delegate: get the entire family involved.

•Make a checklist, when a job is completed, check it off - you'll feel as

though you are really accomplishing something.

The change of décor along with some spring cleaning can make

a big difference in your life. The change will energize you; it’s like a

breath of pure spring sunshine..
