Homecoming Overview Homecoming Week at Florida State University is a weeklong series of events planned for the student body and alumni to celebrate their connection to the institution. Homecoming is an annual tradition hosted by Florida State University during the fall semester to welcome the alumnus back to the campus, as well as foster a sense of school spirit among students. The event offers a variety of programs that attracts a diverse crowd of students. The week takes place during the fall semester each year. Homecoming 2013 took place from Sunday, November 10 through Saturday, November 16 under the theme, “A Legendary Spirit.” The Student Government Association (SGA) at Florida State University Homecoming Executive Council sponsors all Homecoming events in coordination with the Student Activities Center, the Alumni Association, the Student Alumni Association and the entire university community.

History of Homecoming

The history of Homecoming at The Florida State University is rich in tradition and pride. The first Homecoming was held on December 3-4, 1948, which consisted of events scheduled on a Friday and Saturday. It started off very simple, with no theme or Grand Marshall. Clara Mofitt Howell McKay was Florida State’s first Homecoming Queen. Events included an eloquent banquet and breakfast in the East Campus Dining Hall and a barbeque in the West Campus Student Union. Pow Wow was held on Centennial Field and was free of charge to all students. The Parade was held on Saturday morning, followed by the biggest game of the year that afternoon. The week concluded with the Homecoming dance. In 1950, the first theme for Homecoming was introduced: “FSU All the Time.” In 1952, the Homecoming Parade was moved to Friday afternoon, where it has remained ever since. From 1948-1959, the weekend of events remained the same. However, in 1960, a show was added to the Saturday evening list of events with a performance by Jill Corey, Brothers Four & Tom O’Horgan in Westcott Auditorium. In 1974, Ruby Diamond was named the first Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Parade and the first Homecoming Chief and Princess, C. Steven Lancaster and Julianne Sewell, were crowned. Throughout the late 90′s and early 21st century the week of Homecoming was expanded. In 2003, Skit Night, Philanthropy Day, and Renegade Rally were introduced to the schedule, as well as the first Warchant. Since then Homecoming has continued to expand and become more popular with students, turning into what it is today. The week of events now kicks off with Warchant, a concert held in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, in which popular headlining artists perform for over 5,000 members of the FSU community. Spear-It Night, Renegade Recess, Skit Night, Torch Pursuit, Seminole Showdown, a reception for faculty and staff, and Parade are the events that follow throughout the week. The week culminates with Pow Wow, which is the largest pep rally for Florida State, with entertainment from student organizations such as the FSU Flying High Circus, appearances by FSU coaches and athletes, and performances from comedians, such as Jimmy Fallon and Steven Colbert. The most popular event of the week, the FSU football game rounds out this amazing week of events!

Homecoming Program Assessment

Planning Process

The planning process for Homecoming 2013 began in the spring semester with the selection of the Homecoming Executive Council. The Director and Assistant Director of Homecoming were appointed by the SGA President. After being confirmed, the Director and Assistant Director held interviews to select the rest of the executive council members.

The Homecoming Executive Council began their planning process by reviewing assessment reports from 2012 and reviewing transition documents that were left to them by their predecessors. They met bi-weekly from spring break until the end of the spring semester. In April 2013, the council went on an overnight retreat to build relationships and continue planning their events. At this retreat, the council brainstormed several ideas and made the determination that they hoped to maintain the strong tradition of Homecoming while bringing new and innovative ideas to the schedule of events.

Event and area directors continued their planning throughout the spring, into the summer and fall semesters. The council met weekly as a group during the fall semester, and individual members had weekly meetings with their designated advisor. Council members met with the Director or Assistant Director of Homecoming on an as needed basis. A one-day retreat was held at the FSU Challenge Course in October to refine the council’s communication skills and build morale and excitement for Homecoming. As Homecoming drew near, contracts were finalized and advertising and promotion began. Executive council members worked with the Director of Involvement (previously called the Director of Spirit) to ensure adequate staffing at each event from Spirit Force.

In the two weeks prior to Homecoming, the council dedicated their weekly meetings to discussing individual details of each event, so that all members were fully informed about what to expect. On-site volunteer meetings were held prior to several events to review any last minute changes and bring Spirit Force members up to speed on the needs of each event.

Changes in Homecoming

Homecoming 2013 was the week of November 10-16, 2013. This was later in the semester than Homecoming 2012, which took place during the month of October. The change in schedule, which was determined by FSU Athletics, allowed students an extra month to plan their events.

Two changes were made to the Homecoming Executive Council in 2013. Monday, November 11, 2013 was the Veterans’ Day Holiday, on which the university was closed. The Director and Assistant Director of Homecoming expressed the desire to recognize the holiday through a service event to be held on Veterans’ Day. They created an Assistant Director of Service to help in executing this project (unfortunately, there were difficulties which prevented this project

Homecoming 2013 Report Page 8

from taking place). Additionally, the Director of Spirit was renamed the Director of Involvement to reflect new job responsibilities and avoid confusion with the Director of Spear-It Night.

Based upon suggestions from the University-Wide Homecoming Committee, the Director and Assistant Director of Homecoming decided that fewer events during Homecoming week would be eligible for points as part of the student groups competition. Torch Pursuit and Seminole Showdown were the events affected by this change, and were thus moved to the night of Seminole Festival. This change in the schedule allowed a new opportunity for both events to draw participants, since the incentive of points was no longer used to attract student organizations to participate. Participation in Torch Pursuit increased from 2013, but Seminole Showdown saw a decrease in participants (see Table 1 for more details).

Recommendations Used from Previous Years

• Renegade Recess was moved to 4:30 pm to allow more time for the Boys & Girls Club to arrive.

• The Director of University Outreach had more direct involvement in encouraging class councils and residence halls to participate with their constituents in Homecoming.

• Transition binders were left for the 2013 Homecoming Executive Council by their 2012 counterparts.

• The students improved communication by having a fall retreat at the FSU Challenge Course. • The Homecoming Participation Packet was improved to be more concise and included a

quick reference page with all major deadlines for the benefit of student. • Skit Night clarified their rules to indicate that dress rehearsal was mandatory for all students

performing in a skit. • The Director of Involvement held group interviews as part of the Spirit Force selection

process.

Programming Decisions

Programming decisions were made by the student directors of each event, under the advisement of the Director and Assistant Director of Homecoming, the Assistant Director for Homecoming and Event Planning, and the Graduate Assistant for Homecoming and Event Planning. Factors included event logistics, space availability, vendors available, and the desire of students to continue traditional programming while also bringing new and innovative ideas to Homecoming week.

The most notable programming decision this year was the selection of a country artist, Florida Georgia Line, to perform at Warchant. After many years of rap/hip hop, feedback from the Homecoming online survey general comments indicated that the student body desired a change of genre.

Homecoming 2013 Report Page 9

Page 10: Homecoming 2013 - nicolekaz.weebly.com · Homecoming 2013 Report Page 2 . ... Homecoming 2013 took place from Sunday, November 10 through Saturday, November 16 under the theme, “A

Additionally, the Homecoming Executive Council made a number of choices about the time and venue for several events. For example, the Faculty and Staff Reception was moved to the lunch hour (previously, the event was held at the end of the work day). Instead of hosting the event on the outskirts of campus in University Center C, it was held in a central location at the Oglesby Union State Ballroom. Seminole Festival, previously a daytime event, was held at night to make it a destination for students, rather than an event that students pass through between classes. Battleship was added to the Odds-and-Evens Sports Competition, and the SAA Flag Football Tournament was removed from the schedule of events.

Pow Wow Program Assessment

Planning Process

After the Director and the Assistant Director were appointed by the Overall Director and Assistant Director of Homecoming, the Director was confirmed by the Student Government Association. The Director and the Assistant Director of Pow Wow held interviews to select the committee members. The subcommittees include PR & Marketing, Programming, Operations, Hospitality, Production and Service. Sixteen students were selected to serve on the 2013 Pow Wow Committee, making a total of eighteen members including the Director and Assistant Director.

A Fall Retreat was held at the FSU Reservation where goals for semester and Pow Wow 2013 were set. Following this, weekly committee meetings were held throughout the planning process, up until the week of Homecoming. Early in the semester, the programming subcommittee advertised and hosted auditions where student organizations auditioned to perform at Pow Wow. Following this, groups were selected and participated in two rehearsals leading up to the day of show.

Coinciding with committee meetings, Pow Wow Production Meetings were held weekly including representatives from Production Support Group, Seminole Productions, members from the Pow Wow committee and various stakeholders. Throughout these meetings, all of the video ideas were conceived and approved, which allowed for filming throughout the semester. Additionally, various constituents including the FSU Marching Chiefs, the FSU Flying High Circus, the FSU Cheerleaders etc. were invited to one meeting each throughout the semester to discuss the logistics and details of their individual performances. Set designs as well as any production matters were discussed and decided on at these meetings as well.

Throughout the semester, efforts to market Pow Wow continued on campus and in the community. This year, the student committee divided the city of Tallahassee into various zones to be covered through various marketing strategies, including posters and handbills. They called this “Operation Outreach.” Additionally, the committee chalked in various areas of campus and hosted multiple tank and hat (snapback) giveaways including three market Wednesdays. Members of the committee also targeted areas of campus where freshman frequent, as they are typically the least aware of the details of Pow Wow.

Page 11: Homecoming 2013 - nicolekaz.weebly.com · Homecoming 2013 Report Page 2 . ... Homecoming 2013 took place from Sunday, November 10 through Saturday, November 16 under the theme, “A

Leading up to the day of show, various logistical aspects were covered including hospitality of the artist and of the crew. Load-in took place beginning the Thursday morning before Pow Wow and continued through until the night of. Various rehearsals took place the day prior and they day of Pow Wow. Production Support Group, Seminole Productions, Gene Deckerhoff and any other participants were able to run through the minute-by-minute schedule the afternoon before Pow Wow took place.

Programming Decisions

Programming decisions were made by the Pow Wow Committee and the Pow Wow Production Committee under the advisement of the Director and Assistant Director of Pow Wow, the Associate Director for Student Activities, and the Graduate Assistant for Major Events and Involvement. The major decisions for this event include headliner artist(s), set design, video production, student organization involvement, special events/guests etc. Goals of the planning process for Pow Wow include the desire of students to continue traditional programming while also bringing new and innovative ideas to the event.

One of the most impactful decisions made for Pow Wow is the headliner/opener of the comedy portion of the show. This year, Nick Offerman agreed to perform at Pow Wow and shortly after, Retta was offered to open for him. In addition to this, the programming subcommittee made the decisions of which student groups were to perform at Pow Wow. Due to the number of organizations that auditioned; this was the first year in which some groups that auditioned to perform were turned away. It is the hope of the committee to make performing at Pow Wow a valuable opportunity for organizations rather than something they simply do based off of tradition of past years. Lastly, any budgetary decisions were made by the Associate Director for Student Activities with the input of the Graduate Assistant for Major Events and Involvement as well as the Director of Pow Wow.

Focus Group Summaries

Student Organization Representatives Reflection Overall the student representatives were overwhelmed, their moral was low and they were

not really excited about Homecoming. They were looking forward to Homecoming being over because of all the stress and work being a representative entails. Many of them were first time representatives and not prepared. Pomping received mixed reviews because of how much time it takes but the students that do enjoy it appreciate the time with their peers.

Their favorite aspects of Homecoming are the main events such as the football game, Warchant, the Parade, Pow Wow and mostly Skit Night. Some students expressed a desire to make Homecoming more meaningful. They shared that they do a lot of work for nothing of great meaning. An idea shared was to have a goal besides simply ‘winning’ Homecoming and potentially building awareness and fundraising for a cause. Another idea was to develop a plan to remind their peers that Homecoming is about all athletic teams not just football.

Students also shared that deadlines need to be more consistent and not so many different times for each specific piece or different methods of submission. For example, all deadlines for anything regarding their role would be due on Fridays at 5pm via email. The various deadlines and submission methods made it difficult to remember when what was due and how. They also recommended the use of a Facebook group to facilitate communication. They also wanted the rules packet earlier. They felt that they did not have sufficient time to review the entire packet and budget their time. Float checks should be done in the evening and assigned a specific time instead of a two-hour window. Thankfully, by the end of the meeting the students felt better and were beginning to get excited about Homecoming and shared their final thought: “We love Homecoming!” A copy of the feedback form can be found in Appendix F. The complete summary of the Homecoming Focus Group Notes is included in Appendix G. Homecoming Executive Council Reflection

The week following Homecoming, the Executive Council had a final meeting to discuss and reflect on their experience working on Homecoming 2013. Overall, the Executive Board had a great time planning events, collaborating with each other, and getting to know each other. They also enjoyed receiving support for breaking tradition on how some events were executed, such as hosting Warchant in the Civic Center.

A main concern which was prevalent through several stages of Homecoming 2013 was the communication between members of the Homecoming Executive Council and student groups. Several of the student groups did not comprehend or know the rules for Skit Night and other events, particularly with inconsistent deadline times. In order for students groups to be well aware of rules, regulations, and deadlines, the communication channel between the Council and groups needs to improve. Additionally, the Executive Council discussed how building relationships with the Pow Wow Committee helped integrate the event and communication better into Homecoming. The relationships between these two entities should continue to be cultivated in the future.

The complete summary of the Homecoming Executive Board Reflection is included in Appendix H. Pow Wow Committee Reflection

The week following Pow Wow, the Pow Wow Committee had a final meeting to discuss and reflect on their experience working on Pow Wow 2013. Overall, the Committee had a great time planning the schedule of events, collaborating with one another, and getting to know each other.

A main concern which was prevalent through several stages of Pow Wow 2013 was the lack of communication and timelines. More specifically, there was a lack of communication between members of the Pow Wow Committee and performers and Civic Center staff, which needs to be improved for next year. In order for performers to be well aware of timelines and deadlines, the communication channel between the Committee, Civic Center staff, and performers needs to improve. The complete summary of the Pow Wow Committee Reflection is included in Appendix I.

Recommendations for Next Year

• Keep Warchant in the Civic Center – After being hosted at Langford Green, Doak Campbell Stadium, and now the Civic Center, it’s clear that Warchant is best suited for this venue. The facility provides protection from the unpredictable weather and is well suited for large concerts when it comes to staffing, equipment, concessions, etc.

• Year-round Campus Engagement – With the Seminoles earning the title of BCS National Champions this year, there were more opportunities for year round engagement with the student body on social media and other platforms. Staying active on social media throughout the year can help the Executive Council build a larger audience, which will be useful for purposes other than programming, such as recruiting new members, distributing surveys, etc.

• Collaborative Events – Torch Pursuit proved to be a big success in 2013 as it fed into Seminole Festival. Having more collaboration between various Homecoming events in 2014 could be a great way to boost student engagement.

Conclusion

Florida State University Homecoming is a weeklong event of activities and programs concluding with a home football game. Several departments across campus participate in the planning, executing and hosting of Homecoming events. The Student Activities Center works directly with the student Homecoming Executive Committee in collaboration with the Student Government Association and the Florida State Alumni Association. 2. Why didn't you participate in Homecoming?

Text Response I had a sports club commitment.

It wasn't conducive to my work schedule

Nick Offerman was a poor choice for a Pow Wow act. He was here two years ago when I was a freshman and others were sophomores. I didn't think it a good use of my time to wait in line for hours to see the same show. I was too busy in meetings to attend the parade. Also, Florida Georgia Line did not seem appealing. We may be in the south, but most of our student body comes from south Florida and we don't go out of our way to see a country act.

I didn't have time to make it to the events

Working

I don't have much school spirit too be honest -- I also was very busy studying all weekend

no time was doing homework

Time

Speficially Powwow, I thought that the guest was not as well-planned as I would have liked. We just had Nick Offerman less than two years ago, and from what I've heard from my peers, he gave pretty much the exact talk he gave at Ruby Diamond/the SLC. I was afraid of this happening, which is why I did not go. Nick Offerman is a comedic actor, not a stand-up comedian (like Craig Ferguson, Kathy Griffith, etc.) and it's important to plan a speaker who can do well in front of an audience and keep people invested and entertained. I know Nick Offerman was well-received, but I also know a LOT of people who left early. Also, I feel as if Homecoming only lends itself to be participated in if you fit into a certain bracket (i.e. Greek Life). I am not interested in the parade, etc. because I know it is, mainly, consisted of people who fit into a very specific social class here at FSU.

I was out of town visiting a friend, but was very upset to be missing it.

7. Why do you think Homecoming doesn't appeal to FSU's diverse student body?

Text Response There aren't enough smaller activities available.. most of the activities are big ones at night that may not appeal to some of the student body

Florida Georgia Line seemed to pander to white southern fraternities, not to a diverse student body. I wouldn't even say that reached common ground between different groups of people in our school.

The events descriptions weren't clear on the flyers and the timing of events were really only beneficial to younger college students with no ibligations

There were no events appealing to ir cinnecting todiverse students.

It seems like the homecoming council tends to try and get artists/comedians that are "popular" but that isn't the case for everyone. I think it would be great to have people that are not well known. Also, I think homecoming should have more smaller events.

There isn't necessarily something for everyone. I think there are ways to include and interest a more diverse population at FSU.

Nor a variety of activities. everyone doesn't like country music or inappropriate comedies

I believe it caters to the diverse aspect of the student body, but I feel like homecoming doesn't really apply to the students, I don't think HC functions on student input. I this FSU homecoming is afraid of change and afraid of catering to the group of students that really want to have fun and be proud of their school. I think FSU HC is too focused on being traditional, that they forget that the generation of students are changing, and that's it's okay to step outside the box and remain traditional.

White country band and white headling artist that was completely inappropirate at Pow Wow.

It dosnt seem like they were trying to appeal to the audience but rather show us where our money is going.

Everything is too focused on one group, and even this years homecoming court in my eyes was poorly selected. There was no diversity amongst it.

It's just about football and homecoming queens and cheering and dancing and other silly things... Basically, it's an event geared towards Upper Middle Class Americans.

People like me just aren't interested in homecoming. In all honesty I'm not sure what FSU could do to make it appeal to me.

I think it caters to a specific group of people, mainly people that fit into the Greek life student body.

It is very centered around Greek Life.

Too Greek oriented

I think that next year points should be awarded in Torch Pursuit and Renegade Recess and Seminole Showdown. I think that organizations worked hard in each of those categories and they should be rewarded. Also, the packets for homecoming reps were great but I think the rules were so specific but unclear at times. For example, I was the Skit Chair for my organization and I did not like how we had to leave a six-hour window open for skit rehearsal on a Sunday. That was so broad. But then we had to have a final cast list that I explicitly asked about whether or not it had to be officially a final cast list. The skit people said it had to be final. Yet, ultimately, it do not matter because they weren't checking ID's for each group. If the final cast list doesn't matter, then it shouldn't matter. If you need to know how many people max we will have in our performance then that is fine. These rules restricted people from being in skit and when certain circumstances arose, we didn't know we could replace people. Also, for float checks, it should be made clear that we can send in pictures for float checks. Like I said earlier, the packets were helpful and very specific but certain parts were vague and unclear.

MORE free food

I would request that the Homecoming executive board screen candidates before being signed, in order to assure that the message supported by PowWow headliners is appropriate and in-line with the values of the institution. Additionally, I would request that RSOs limit their individual activities during Homecoming week, in order to allow for a more unifying and all-encompassing student body experience.

Do not have Nick Offerman. No.

Make sure you approve of what the Powwow guests are saying... I was offended by Offerman. I would have liked more information about what the various events were. For example I never

recieved information about why people had to be dressed up to attend Spear-it night

email sign up for updates throughout the year for people that aren't associated with a club/ organization; facebook page with continual updates

It'd be better if they had more advertisement or presence on campus. I missed a couple events early in homecoming because I didn't know about them very much ahead of time.

Make sure the comedian performs a new routine

I did not know who the Chief and Princess candidates were. There should be a brief video or presentation done before hand that is accessible to the student body to show who these individuals are personally and not based upon what organizations they belong to.

Shirts to be distributed earlier

I can not think of any improvement.

n/a thought it was awesome. Wish I could have gone to Warchant because I love that it was a country artist.

Larger and more active festival

Better organization with lines

Maybe a band for the concert that appeals to more people, but I love country so I'm not complaining.

More posters about the events, maybe reminder slips or something

Promote more volunteer opportunities

make the comedian stick to the time limit ;)

Do not get Nick Offerman again.

Include Unity Step put on by the NPHC in the schedule of events.

Encourage more students that are not involved in Greek Life to get involved with Spear-it Night and Skit Night.

Just keep being you guys! You are amazing student leaders and you'll change this campus!

For Pow Wow, don't bring in any polarizing/controversial figures or speeches etc.

Spear-it night could be held in a bigger venue to accommodate more people

Better guests at Pow Wow

Don't repeat acts. Get better bands. Advertise more for the smaller events. Stop focusing so much on sororities and fraternities because it only alienates the rest of the school who begin to feel that Homecoming isn't for them.

More marketing budget. Even more tickets sold for Pow Wow and Warchant in order to make

back some money for Headliners and SGA

N/A

Its too greek.

I think it was extremely impressive this year! I honestly don't have a lot of improvements, simply because I didn't get to attend a lot of the events that I wasn't directly involved with.

Look into the possibility of having someone other than a comedian come for Pow Wow.

Have more of a fuller description for each event, not just the featured ones, on all advertisements so that if I'm an off campus student I know what is going on before not after the fact

Have better advertising about smaller events other than spear it night, powwow and war chant

Improve Homecoming Executive Board communication with student groups.

A better comedian, I didnt really enjoy Nick Offerman. besides that everything else was really fun! Keep the Carnival!

A less longer stand-up in Pow Wow and a different theme for homecoming.

Bring back more country artists!!!

Get a stand up comedian and one who doesn't bash religious groups. Also winners of any homecoming events who get special seats at powwow should get a tangible paper allowing them easy access into the show instead of having to wait in line considering they won.

Don't let Pow Wow last so long. Let the Golden Girls and Cheerleaders perform, and then do court and the comedians. The videos and all the other performers took so long and it was 9:30 by the time the comedians took the stage. Maybe only do one comedian if they're going to talk for 2 hours. And allow students to enter through all doors of the civic center. The lines were ridiculous. I did love Pow Wow though!

More organization for ticketing process for the florida georgia line concert. Alot of us were concerned if we were going to get in or not since they were only allowing a certain amount of students in. (Possibly do it how they do football games, have to go online if you want one, that way you know you are garunteed entrance) Also multiple entrances for the concert instead of what seemed like one single line and entrance, the line was a mile and a half long.

None.

I would like to see students more involved in organizing and choosing the activities for homecoming such as the concert.

No "saving seats" for more than 3 people. There were people who had areas of 10 seats blocked off because friends were still in line for pow wow, and even for spear-it-night. Many people left after 11 when nick offerman went on until midnight. Maybe cut down that time.

n/a

A large list of the activities perhaps outside of dining halls because I was not really sure about where or when the activities were except for pow wow and the game.

Shorter Pow Wow, more advertising

Maybe a new event?

Better comedian

No country music, some kind of door hanger for people who live off campus. I would have liked a way to hear about all of the events, there's many I didn't know were happening

Different comedian

Nothing in particular, maybe just a new event.

Keep the headlining PowWow performer to an hour performance. Maybe have a special event or priority for certain things for seniors.

Advertise for more of the little events earlier, not just the big events like Warchant and Pow Wow. I didn't know about them

variety of events, more excitement, more publicity

Chelsea Handler as the special guest!

more advertising of events and details of how long the last and etc.

It was perfect

better comedian. Rhetta was amazing but only got 20 min. It felt like Mr. Offerman was preaching to us and he was just not funny.

More social media. Didn't really know the times or locations of anything until right before events. Better descriptions of what events actually are. Don't know what Seminole Recess is

HC is for the students. I hope the inputs to this survey for the students is really taken seriously. HC is something students want to enjoy. Spice it up a bit. Get creative and add different events to the calendar. Think BIG.

More diverse headling artist. Nick Offerman was AWFUL! This does not look good for FSU. He started way too late for a program as long as he had planned. I would reconsider doing comedy all together.

N/A

The line was crazy unorganized for powow

Mention Sports Clubs

I think it would be helpful for the student representatives to recieve the Homecoming packet earlier in the semester. My organization did not have a lot of time to prepare for the Hymn to the Garnet and Gold competitions, and I was waiting to see the regulations before making any purchases for my events. I think it would also be nice for the student representatives to recieve Homecoming shirts during one of the representative meetings. I was required to be with my float

for a float check when the shirts were given out for free on campus so I did not even get the right size because someone else got one for me. I also think that the separate events should provide more details into what they are expecting, there was a lot of miscommunication for Skit Night about needed audio or video files which was difficult for my participants. Overall I really enjoyed this year's homecoming.

Do not hold the banner competition in a random room in the union. Most people do not care to go out of their way to see everyone else's banners when they probably only care about see their own banner, which students probably see via social media or possibly at their Greek organization's house. Hang the banners somewhere where all students can see them. This way you will get more exposure for Homecoming on campus.

Look to other schools to see how we can actually incorporate more activities and school spirit. We're too bland and use the same routine every year.

Advertisements for homecoming events emailed to students, more advertising outside of dorms/the union, facebook events

Don't bring back Nick Offerman. More free food. More opportunities to get free tshirts

-Better homecoming themes -More diversity

i don't have any

better organization of festivities among the student faculty

I'm not sure to be honest. I am sure it's a fun event. It just isn't "my thing"

Have the comedian speak for a shorter period of time; only 1/6 of the audience was left by the time Nick Offerman was finished with his segment. Also, feature more dance groups in Pow-Wow! :)

Get a well known comedian for Pow Wow

improve skit-night, all the skits were extremely boring and not entertaining.

N/A

Spear it night needs a bigger location. Not everyone could get in

More interactiveness between Greek life and other societies

Have a time limit on the acts at Pow Wow

Emailing a schedule of all events rather than just emailing the website where the schedule can be found.

I believe individual events during homecoming week should be advertised more. I also think powow should be an hour shorter. Personally I'm not a fan of the intense Greek competition created by homecoming week. I think homecoming should be a time of uniting the different aspects of FSU's campus rather than pinning them against eachother. The competition is cool, but I think it's too intense.

There should be more concerts

I would maybe add more diverse events for students to participate in that don't involve being apart of a group. Also I would really rethink the line formation for pow wow. The whole set up was confusing and once people did figure out the system they just skipped to the beginning.

Nick Offerman was funny for about 30 mins then it felt like I was in a class lecture and should have been taking notes. It would have been better if it was just Retta for the whole time. Otherwise pow wow was a successful event.

I feel as though homecoming week can be over scheduled. Perhaps, FSU classes could be shortened all homecoming week so more students could participate. I also enjoyed the location change of Warchant to the Civic Center and believe it was more successful there.

I think it would be cool if students could vote for homecoming acts, that would make it exciting.

Make the comedian at POw Wow shorter. and not as inappropriate.

24. Do you have any comments regarding any of the events above? Please share.

Text Response I enjoyed Spear-it NIght but it did not start on time and that is a huge turn off for me. Pow Wow was great until Nick Offerman came out. There was a mass exodus of people from the event. I personally thought he was not funny. Retta was hilarious and should have stayed out longer. She was fabulous. Pow Wow was absolutely wonderful in every way until Nick Offerman was mid-way through his act.

I would clarify that my PowWow experience was excellent, with the exception of Offerman's potion of the performance, which I would rate 'very dissatisfied'.

Nick Offerman was too crude

Nick offerman was horrible

It was pretty appalling to me that Nick Offerman performed the exact same show he did a year ago. Seminole Showdown was cheesy and pretty boring.

The festival was very small this year and ran out of some food items only an hour into the event. Also, the online pre-registration really was meaningless upon arrival. I still had to sign another waiver.

Nick offer man was horrible

Nick Offerman was a bit boring to me or I don't care for dry humor but Retta was freaking hilarious!!!

Nick Offerman should not have been at Pow Wow, he wasn't a good stand up comedian and was offended with his discussion of the bible

Nick Offerman was the biggest let down. As a senior I couldnt have been more disappointed with this choice.

I did not like the national anthem being played on a electric guitar. And nick Offerman was offensive.

I haven't heard of half of these events and the rest weren't adequately described on the posters

Spear-it was too hard for everyone to see, with a very limited space. The speakers were on the corners of the stage blocking most of the performers to viewers seated on the side. I think more people would attend if it was held at a better location.

Both Seminole Showdown and Pow Wow were too long.

The lines are absolutely ridiculous and the Homecoming committee was not helpful at directing people, no one knew what was going on at every event my friends and I attended at the Civic Center. This problem can be fixed by saying doors open at 7 pm and actually opening at 6 pm, to avoid the confusion and get people situated. It was very frustrating and we almost left multiple times.

Nick Offerman was not a comedian. He said it himself. He was not very entertaining. Also, Powwow seemed like it dragged on forever because it started so late

Pow Wow lasted way too long. It does every year.

I was expecting better acts from spear-it night considering there's an audition process and everything. The girl who sang a theatrical song about dying was a little much. I also expected a better show out of nick offerman at pow wow.

Pow Wow was very entertaining, but too long.

I don't like country music, I would really have liked a different genre for that. FAU (I think) got Benny Benassi to play for them. I really wanted to go see Nick Offerman and Retta because I love them but I didn't get a chance

Nick Offerman was not funny and too offensive. Poor choice.

Nick Offerman was performing for way too long. The headlining performers should be kept to an hour, maximum.

It was raining & hard to see at the parade

Nick Offerman wasn't a stand up comedian and was slightly disrespecttful to a large number of students beliefs.

didn't know when these events were happening and if they were all for students

You should separate the spirit part of Pow Wow from the performers. The college unity and spirit part was great. The headliners were not good and should not have been brought to FSU.

Nicks performance was too long.

better organized with paperwork

Pow Wow the comedians were not funny and the organization of the line outside was a mess.

Nick Offerman at Pow Wow went on for WAY too long.

Nick Offerman was absolutely terrible. Can we try to get someone that is not ridiculously sacrilegious?

Spear-night wasnt that great! A lot of the acts werent very good at all and I dont understand why some of them were chosen. Nick offerman was a bad choice

I have been inspired to return to take advantage of more of these wonderful events!

no not at this time

warchant could have been better supervised. individuals behind myself snuck in liquor and were smoking cigarrettes. Civic center employee did nothing about it and sat with them. Eventually a police officer removed them. Cigarrette smoke was extreemly harmful to my asthma. very dissapointed.

The Homecoming Parade was very dull, nothing exciting.

Spear-It Night needed to be in a larger venue to accommodate all the people that wanted to attend. I was very disappointed. Nick Offerman was also very disappointing.

Country music is only targeting a small audience, and the comedian only attracted people who watch parks and rec

POWWOW was awesome except for the comedian. I left before his show ended.

Nick Offerman was awful and ruined Pow Wow for me and my friends.

Appendix G: Student Group Representative Focus Group Meeting Notes

The week prior to Homecoming, the Student Group Representatives had a meeting to discuss and reflect on their experience working on Homecoming 2013. Below are the notes from that meeting. What is one thing you wish you knew before becoming a Homecoming student group representative?

• Rep meetings, time commitment and deadlines • A rough estimate of time requirement and dates • What is it for • What all of the responsibilities are going to be • A clear understanding of the different events • It is a lot of work • Nothing new, I was a rep last year • The amount of stress/responsibility the position requires • I wish I got more emails from the university • How time constrained the events were • I was one last year so this time around it was easier for me. The first time around I wish I

knew how time consuming it would be • How stressful it is to be one • That I was one, how much effort you need to put into it • How many deadlines there were earlier • One thing I wish I knew before becoming a rep is how exactly everything worked • A meeting specifically with residence hall reps on the role of the residence hall in

Homecoming. Sarah did a good job scheduling unofficial meetings • The time commitment • Better float check times • The amount of work it requires • Nothing I wish I knew, just wanted to have the full packet before hand • I wish I knew just how many events and little things went into homecoming • The time commitment, although I did anticipate a lot of it • The amount of work/stress it is • I had no idea about any of the responsibilities whatsoever • Everything was clear to me • All of the deadlines came too fast. It would also be nice if we don’t pair to be able to have

two reps from the same RSO • How much work it is to organize among my group • I wish I knew how stressful being the student rep would be

Homecoming 2013 Report Page 74

Page 75: Homecoming 2013 - nicolekaz.weebly.com · Homecoming 2013 Report Page 2 . ... Homecoming 2013 took place from Sunday, November 10 through Saturday, November 16 under the theme, “A

• That pomping sucks • A timeline and participation packet • How stressful Homecoming is and how many deadlines there are to meet • More info on deadlines and applications • The time commitment • A better layout of the point system • Better idea of deadlines. If there was some way to send reminders of deadlines even adding

all reps to a Facebook group

What are some ways to improve the pairing process in the future?

• Pair us instead of courting • Make sure to stress communication between reps • Have each fraternity/sorority list requested pairing and use the matches and known

compatibility • I think the pairing process works great as it is, it’s more fun to participate (and more people

participate) when they get to pick their own pairings • Nothing • No proposals, as of now it is more of a popularity contest within the Greek community • It’s fine, possibly making pairing off limits for only two years, not three • More consistent deadlines • No pairs • I thought the mingle was helpful • Complete pairing information spring semester • Survey the people about their preference • I think the pairing system works great • The pairing process went well, so no complaints here • I like how it is set up • They are fine • Pick randomly so that there are no reason for pairings to be unfair • I liked the way pairing happened • I think the process is fine because people get who they want to be with • Maybe different meeting times and more updates especially on social media. I think the

pairing process is fair • I feel it is fair • We were not paired • None, I didn’t pair my organization • Some ways to improve it would be to make the meet and great a bigger event. They should

be random to make them more fair

Homecoming 2013 Report Page 75

Page 76: Homecoming 2013 - nicolekaz.weebly.com · Homecoming 2013 Report Page 2 . ... Homecoming 2013 took place from Sunday, November 10 through Saturday, November 16 under the theme, “A

• Pick from a hat • More structure and pre-registration in spring • Have the third pairing added earlier in the process • Set time and rules to establish pairing • Make things smoother, possibly making it easier for some organizations to meet • Random • We all have so much going on as FSU students that deadlines help, but reminders would be

great

How can these meetings be most beneficial to you?

• Go over everything in full • Meetings are pretty good already • If they provided food to the other representatives • Hand out agenda, with important dates • Maybe weekly emails and contact with reps and a monthly in person meeting • Make them more informational • They are fine as they are • Put information on just one website to organize things • Giving out paper summaries of each meeting • Meeting minutes given out or emailed • Continue to provide specific details and deadlines • Go over everything for the week in detail to avoid questions or miscommunication • They are beneficial, I get the information I need • Reminders of the meetings/what needs to be brought to the meetings • Replace the weekly meetings with emails with all the info and a monthly meeting • These meetings can be most beneficial to me if they run on time and everything goes

smoothly • Larger room • Going over things that are not in the participation packet • Do fewer meetings that are longer instead of one every week • Continue to keep them detailed and have deadlines • All the info is awesome, maybe a bigger room • Let us know all the little things we need to know for the events • I think they are very beneficial now • They blow through slides and just tell us to look at packet, which makes these meetings

somewhat pointless • I feel like they were a waste of time because we did was go over deadlines

• Keep me updated on what needs to be done • More details on each event, explaining what is asked for applications or certain checks • Clarifications of processes, deadlines, etc. • I love how they are straight to the point • I’m reminded of dates • More detailed, 1st meeting go over entire participation packet • They should tell us extra information rather than just read out of the packet • More one on one questions and answers • Making them faster and more efficient • More elaborate, feel that they’re too short • Giving examples of where to buy float supplies or even showing examples of previous year

Appendix L: Homecoming Advisor Reflection

2013 marked my second year of working with the Homecoming Executive Council. I enjoyed being able to see the planning process from beginning to end over the entire calendar year, as opposed to my first year when I joined the Student Activities Center in August. This experience allowed me to get a better understanding of the extensive, thoughtful planning that goes into each Homecoming event.

Overall, I thought that the Executive Council did a great job of meeting their goals of improvement from 2012. With the leadership of several returning members, the student leaders focused on improving both qualitative and quantitative aspects of their events in a budget conscious manner.

Most importantly, I would like to reflect on the change of venue for several of the Homecoming events that I advised:

• Warchant – Moved from Doak Campbell Stadium to Donald L. Tucker Civic Center Moving Warchant to an indoor venue allowed a great reduction in cost and effort needed to produce this event. The Civic Center is a familiar venue for concerts, so all of the staffing and hospitality needs for the event were easily met. This made it an easy event to execute, but took away some opportunities for the Director and Assistant Director of Warchant to gain experience in these areas of concert production.

• Faculty/Staff Reception – Moved from the President’s Skybox to Union Ballrooms Moving the location and time of this event helped it fit better in the overall Homecoming schedule. Although attendance was down this year, there are numerous ways to increase that for years to come.

• Skit Night – Moved from The Moon (off campus) to Ruby Diamond Concert Hall When I first arrived at FSU, I was told that Skit Night had long ago outgrown The Moon. We were very excited to have the opportunity to host Skit Night at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, making it more accessible to our students by hosting it in a larger, on-campus venue. This venue was much more well-equipped for such an event, and had more dedicated staff than The Moon provided us. The benefit of having Alexis return for a second year as one of the directors helped make the transition seamless. I recommend having a returning member of exec serve as the Skit Night Director. Every effort should be made to find a mutually available date with RDCH staff for Skit Night in the years to come.

The other big programming change this year was the change from rap to country music at Warchant. Although not popular with some students, the overall success of the event showed that other varieties of music can be enjoyed on FSU’s campus. Our student leaders offered a great piece of advice to students who were upset with this change: “Look at the four years in your FSU experience. Hopefully there can be a different genre of music each year, and of those four years, at least one or two will have an artist that appeals to you.” Warchant may not appeal to all 40,000+ students each year, but I think we can do much better in reaching the entire student body if we change the genre of music each year to appeal to a different segment of the population.

Appendix M: Pow Wow Advisor Reflection

I have thoroughly enjoyed advising the 2013 Pow Wow Committee. This group of students was exceptional in building their team and establishing relationships, which led to a cohesive and productive environment throughout the planning process. Overall, I felt the committee’s ability to work together allowed for effective communication and created positive results. They demonstrated a true commitment to the event, Homecoming and Florida State University.

Considering the rapid growth of the Pow Wow committee in recent years, these students have made significant strides to establishing a strong, fully operating committee. This year, the committee attended their first overnight retreat at the FSU Reservation. The students on the committee really took advantage of this time to build their team, set goals and have detailed discussions about the planning process.

The committee was especially successful in improving their marketing strategies. They increased social media awareness by promoting the Facebook page (including paid promotion) and the Twitter account. Since the committee was under the impression that Pow Wow was more unfamiliar to underclassmen, they attempted to promote to this population by handing out flyers and having multiple appearances at Market Wednesday. Due to their extensive efforts, the attendance of this year’s Pow Wow was over 8,000—almost filling every available seat in the Civic Center.

In addition to marketing strategies, the committee was very influential in increasing awareness of student group involvement, including having multiple groups audition for a slot to perform. 2013 was the first year that some groups that had auditioned were unable to perform due to time constraints. New ideas were brought into the planning process including an acapella group riff-off and using well-known members of campus for filming including Ms. Eva Killings and President Barron. Furthermore, the committee and campus partners were able to coordinate the appearance of Bobby Bowden for the night of Pow Wow, which was definitely a crowd favorite. Overall, the programming and logistical planning for Pow Wow were executed to the best of the committee’s ability.

Although there are always mishaps when planning a large scale event, I do believe the committee did their best to prepare for the day of show. Every member committed to learning their role and being present as far as their responsibilities on their subcommittees and beyond. Their intentional engagement in the committee was obvious to Lori and I as advisors, and more importantly to each other. I am very thankful for this experience and the opportunity to advise such a wonderful group of students.
