Who doesnât have some leftover from a once-envisioned craft or art project stashed in the back of a closet, sit-ting there useless ... taunting?
No need to fret. A group of people loosely organized as âTran-sition Palo Altoâ is offering quarterly craft swaps. All you need to do is bring something you no longer need â and go home with something new to you.
Rani Jayakumar, who organized the January swap, describes Transition Palo Alto as a network of 250 worldwide initiatives with a common goal: to be more resilient and less dependent on the rest of the world.
âIâd almost call it a movement rather than an organization.
Roni Strauss, who makes cards out of
paper scraps and beads, takes a closer
look at a paper sample during the
craft swap at Opalâz in January.

People are interested in being envi-ronmentally friendly but also more active in communities. Itâs a return to basics,â she said.
Transition Palo Alto âespouses the idea of âreskilling,â relearning skills of past generations,â she said, noting that her grandmother knew how to use a grindstone or to knit a sweater. Skill-building could be making bread, or learning to track animals, she said.
As part of the reskilling, the craft swaps also offer craft demonstrations. In January, Annie Jenkins, owner of Opalâz, showed how to make soap, while Jayakumar offered a brief demo for simple papermaking. Marchâs swap will include demonstrations of making beads, soap packaging, lip balm and things you can make with a T-shirt.
The first craft swap was held in November 2010 at A Work of Heart, a creative art studio in San Jose, the second at Opalâz in Midtown in March 2011. A combined garden/craft share was held in October 2011 at Common Ground.
Jayakumar first went to a swap at A Work of Heart. âI am personally interested in arts and crafts. I always have extra supplies around,â she said. But she wanted to do it closer to her Palo Alto home.
At Januaryâs swap, 25 people showed up in the upstairs room at Opalâz, spreading their âwaresâ on labeled tables: scrapbooking, baubles,
fabric, boxes and trays, cross-stitch patterns, art supplies, yarn â and a vast array of miscellany, from callig-raphy materials and old tea tins to an unused box of photo print paper.
Zuzanna Drozdz of Palo Alto dropped off leftover supplies from a college art class â a huge bag of paint, plus fixatives â as well as a bag of leather scraps. She was no longer working in this medium, or lacked access to an industrial sewing machine. She was reticent to commit about exactly what sheâd take away: âIâm going to be very reserved. ... I in-tend to leave with less than I brought,â she said, glancing longingly at the fabrics brought in by FabMo, the monthly fine-fabric giveaway.
âI only have one hand: Do I need two rotary cutters?â asked Jen John-son, a Santa Clara resident who is captain of SFEtsy. She brought beads, yarn and tools and picked up raffia, envelopes and fabric for her daugh-terâs dress-up collection.
Lori Stoia of Menlo Park, who teaches soap-making classes through Palo Alto Adult School, brought rib-bons and foam paint brushes. She was scouting for things to use in her classes, as well as items her friends might want.
Monica Benavides of San Jose, who was scouting for seat-cushion materials, dropped off jewelry and magazines. A member of the Insane Craft Posse, she was happy to find
wallpaper samples that she plans to glue onto old cereal boxes to create journals. She spotted the calligraphy paper and figured she could use it as the innards.
She also found FabMo fabric, gift-wrap and some old scrapbooking rulers that could be repurposed in a gardening class.
For more than an hour, people roamed the tables, making their se-lections and chatting about what new purpose they could find for the ma-terials.
Jayakumar noted that the craft swap was just one of nearly a dozen ongoing projects of Transition Palo Alto, which has a steering commit-tee made up of representatives from each subgroup. The activities include reskilling (teaching everything from embroidery to soap-making), a book group, Garden Share (a group that meets monthly at Common Ground to swap homegrown produce), a film series, a sharing circle and a group called Conversation, Community and Calling.
âHundreds of people come to events,â Jayakumar said, and they come from all over the Peninsula.
While the emphasis is on losing the dependence on oil â she described one activity as building an oil tower out of objects made of oil-derivatives (plastic bottles, polyester fabric), Jayakumar said, âItâs not just about stopping. Itâs about starting. Imagine a future without (fill in the blank). What would that be like?â
Not using oil might mean no flying,
or not using a microwave oven (be-cause of the plastic parts), or eschew-ing packaged foods, she said.
Jayakumar, who is already plan-ning the next craft swap, said sheâs also planning to teach a low-carbon-diet class, with an emphasis on cutting down on the use of fuel) out of her Palo Alto home in March.
The Transition international net-work was started in the United King-dom by Rob Hopkins, author of âThe Transition Handbook: from oil depen-dency to local resilience.â
âThe brilliant idea is to start doing this now, to try to envision a posi-tive future for ourselves that doesnât necessarily feature oil prominently,â Jayakumar said, âto learn to live more locally, rely on each other more.â

T he theme of the March garden tips will be learning about plants. I will give tips on how to identify your plants,
how to choose plants for your particular circumstances and how to increase your plant palette.
For aspiring gardeners as well as experi-enced gardeners knowing plants and their applications in the garden is just as impor-tant as any other job we have. Here are the tips:
1. If you donât already own one, buy a good garden encyclopedia. I use the âSun-set Western Garden Book,â the âAmerican Horticultural Society Encyclopediaâ and the Royal Horticultural Societyâs encyclo-pedias. You can get good prices for these online. Try a search for booksellers on your favorite search engine.
2. Start a life list and make a file card or database entry for every plant you learn. Be sure to include the Latin name, common name or names, some characteristics such as sun, water and soil needs and something interesting that will help you to remember each plant.
3. Take at least two pictures of each plant you are learning â one of the flower and or fruit and one of the overall plant. Try to pick a healthy specimen to photograph.
4. Collect a leaf sample, a flower and if possible some seeds. Dry them by press-ing between sheets of paper and stacking books on top. Then you can place them in a page protector with a label giving the plantâs Latin and common name.
5. Learn what plant zone you are in. Your encyclopedia can teach you by looking at the map in the front or back of the book. Know-ing this will help you to select plants that can tolerate your climate. It will also give you information on other climate zones in case you want to create special environments for plants that may not normally grow here.
6. Read the âHow to use this bookâ part of
your encyclopedia to learn how the plant selector works. This may seem confusing but as soon as you look at the plant se-lector section it will make more sense.
7. Study a plant by reading all about it in as many books as
you can find or go online and do a search (using the Latin name) and read up on your plant there. I like to go into the university websites first before tackling any of the club sites or commercial sites. The universities such as UC Berkeley or UC Davis are usu-ally pretty accurate and up to date.
8. Go to an arboretum to learn new plants. The reason I suggest this is because most of the different genus and species of plants (Latin term for plant names) are labeled at arboretums. There is a very good one in Golden Gate Park called Strybing Arbore-tum.
9. Take a plant identification class. They are a lot of fun and you will learn about 100 plants per class. You will learn some trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers and flowering plants. The class teaches some plant identi-fication history and how plants are named, and gives some basic botany (the different parts of plants) so you can identify them better.
10. Go to nurseries and see what is avail-able. I like to visit several nurseries a month and talk to the nursery people. They are a wealth of information. And you can always buy a new plant for your garden.

REALTORSÂź Will Assist Seniors with Household Tasks May 7-11
For senior homeowners or renters who are physically or financially challenged, tasks like replacing smoke detector batteries, flipping a mattress or washing windows can be a major chore. Seniors and the homebound residing on the Peninsula and in the South Bay may request free assistance with these household tasks through the REALTORÂź Service Volunteer Program (RSVP) during the week of May 7-11. The deadline for seniors to apply for assistance is Thursday, March 15.
RSVP is offered by REALTORSÂź and affiliates each year to qualified seniors who cannot otherwise perform certain household tasks due to physical or financial constraints. During RSVP Week, teams of REALTORSÂź and affiliates (professionals who provide industry-related services) will visit senior households and perform various cleaning and maintenance tasks free of charge
The annual community service program was started by members of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORSÂź (SILVAR) in 2001, and adopted as an official association community outreach project in 2002. The program has since expanded to include members of the San Mateo County, Santa Clara County and Santa Cruz County Associations of REALTORSÂź. REALTORSÂź now assist
seniors residing as far north as Daly City and south to Gilroy and in Santa Cruz County.
âOur members are glad to help the seniors in their communities. They realize the help they extend to the elderly can make a difference in a senior remaining an independent homeowner or renter, or having to give up that independence
to some form of care giving and dependence on strangers,â says Eileen Giorgi, SILVARâs RSVP Committee chair.
Last year, 404 RSVP volunteers from the Bay Area provided free assistance to 296 senior households;
247 REALTORSÂź and affiliates from SILVAR assisted 146 senior households in SILVARâs five districts.
Seniors who live in the communities of Atherton, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Woodside, Portola Valley, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Monte Sereno and Los Gatos may apply for this free service by contacting the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORSÂź at (408) 200-0100 for information and an application. Seniors may also visit www.silvar.org to download an application and submit to SILVAR before the March 15 deadline. INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS COLUMN IS PRESENTED BY THE SILICON VALLEY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORSÂź. SEND QUESTIONS TO ROSE MEILY AT [email protected].
