Brown County, Otto Ping’s Account Book, Early 1900s

Successful early photographers were multi-talented individuals. At different times, they

were businesspeople, artists, craftsmen, and amateur chemists. Researchers have employed their

photographs to analyze and understand historical events since the mid-nineteenth century,

without often considering the effort to create those pictures. These efforts can be glimpsed

through documentation left by early photographers. One interesting example of a document

related to early-twentieth century photographic production is the account book of Otto Ping, a

photographer whose work captured glimpses of life in Brown County, Indiana, and whose

account book is housed in the William Henry Smith Memorial Library at the Indiana Historical

Society.1

Ping was born in Brown County on April 3, 1883, to Emaline Henderson and Logan

Ping.2 By his seventeenth birthday, Ping purchased his first camera, a Sears and Roebuck

Monarch.3 There is a strong possibility that this camera is the same one he was using while also

writing in the account book the IHS possesses. Although the book itself is undated, there are

entries and a letter included within it that are dated in the early 1900s.

The account book is, at first look, rather unimposing. It is small (approximately 3-1/2

inches by 5-3/4 inches) and wrapped in a leather cover, perfect for slipping in and out of a jacket

pocket. Inside, written in pencil, are records of photography orders, customer names, addresses,

personal notes, and even shopping lists related to Ping’s work. The book was well used and

reused, and over a century later still captures some of the speed with which Ping maintained his

business. With some entries smudged, half erased, or stricken by either deliberate lines or

careless scribbles, the book is at times hard to read, but remains an invaluable, often overlooked,

resource for someone interested in researching not only Ping’s work, but also Brown County’s

history.
