The Union sends out packets to K-12 classrooms every year, giving teachers the opportunity

to sign up or the program at no cost. Newspapers are delivered to classrooms on days specied

Bob Keyser, known to most as Farmer Bob,

has a reputation or generosity bigger than

his modest personality would imply. Thanks to

his aithul customers who come and buy rom

him at his ruit and vegetable stand, Bob or

a second year is in a position to donate more

than 700 pumpkins to the Fall Home & Harvest

    Festival.

But this isnt the rst time he has donated to

the community. Keysers contributions to theInteraith Food Bank this summer totaled more

than 3,000 pounds o organic heirloom tomatoes.

I dont know, Keyser said, Its a shame to

throw something away or eed it to the hogs

when someone in need could eat it.

Gods been good to me, and most people

have never had the opportunity to have a vine-

    ripened heirloom tomato . . . I am happy I can

share what I am able to with the people in need.It takes all o us to eed the hungry in this county

    and in the world.

Ater wandering through a hay maze, donated by Ridge Feed Farm Supply Co., you can nd Farmer

Bobs pumpkins at this years Fall Home & Harvest Festival in the Enchanted Pumpkin Patch, where

children and adults, can pick up one o Farmer Bobs FREE small pumpkins. Follow the maze inside

the Northern Mines Building to Paint-A-Pumpkin, where participants can paint their pumpkin or a

donation to Paint the Town Pink, The Unions and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospitals breast cancer

awareness event. These estivities could not take place with out Farmer Bobs generous donation.

This past summer, Farmer Bobs ruit and vegetable stand, located behind The Union building o

Sutton Way next to Empire Shoes, oered tasty melons, ragrant nectarines, and a wide array o

    organic heirloom tomatoes.

One man stops in or watermelons and comments. These are the best in the world.

Another woman conesses, Im addicted to these tomatoes and nectarines.

The exceptional favor o the ruits and vegetables is no accident, as Bob explains it. He and arming

partners, Brad and Judy Johnson, work about 80 acres in Gridley where the soil is riendly and the

weather is warmer than the oothills. He is able to provide Nevada County a wide array o resh

vegetables early in the season. Bob conesses that hes not great at all the paper work and praiseshis partners or completing the extensive orms that got their acres ocial certication or organic

    arming.

I like to do the arming,Bob comments, I used to leave the paper work up to (arming partners)

Brad and Judy Johnson, but to be certied, I have my share to do also.

Locally, Keyser is able to provide resh local produce, pumpkins, and Christmas trees while also

providing jobs to laborers out in the elds during his busy seasons.

The Union would like to thank Farmer Bob or his generous donation o pumpkins to the Harvest

Festival at this years Fall Home and Harvest Festival. Be sure to visit Farmer Bobs pumpkin patch at

his ruit and vegetables and vegetable stand, and make Farmer Bob your rst stop or your resh silvertip, nobel, grand, and douglas r Christmas trees this year. Located behind The Union Newspaper

building o Sutton Way, Christmas trees will be available everyday rom 8 am to 8 pm rom the day

ater Thanksgiving through Christmas. Bob ensures quality service and a happy holiday greeting to

WHY can FooDs?Canning can be a safe and economical way to preserve food

at home. Canning homegrown food may save you half the

cost of buying commercially canned food. Many vegetables

begin losing some of their vitamins when harvested. Nearly

half the vitamins may be lost within a few days unless the

fresh produce is cooled or preserved. If vegetables are handled

properly and canned promptly after harvest, they can be more

nutritious than fresh produce sold in local stores.Proper canning practices include:

carefully selecting and washing fresh food,

    peeling some fresh foods,

    hot packing many foods,

adding acids (lemon juice or vinegar) to some foods,

using acceptable jars and self-sealing lids,

processing jars in a boiling-water or pressure canner for

    the correct period of time.

    Collectively, these practices remove oxygen; destroy enzymes;

prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria, yeasts, and molds;and help form a high vacuum in jars. Good vacuums form tight

seals which keep liquid in and air and microorganisms out.www.uga.edu/nchfp/

amazing alchemy o worms turning waste

(kitchen, yard, manures, paper, cardboard etc)

turned into black gold. Starting with a review

o the materials rom around your home that

can be used in the composting process, Kirsten

will bring her enthusiasm and eagerness on the

subject to show that with the right balance omoisture, temperature, air, waste and bedding,

the process o composting with worms at home

is easy, un and something that everyone can do.

    (Kids love it!)

    Similar to regular composting, composting

with worms also uses kitchen and yard waste, however with worms, they eat all the waste, it goes

through their bodies (a biological wonder) and they excrete a nutrient rich PH balanced ertilizer,

worm castings. The end result is a living ertilizer lled with benecial microbials. It also breaks

down quicker than regular compost. Worm castings are a supreme amendment or anything that

grows in your yard and orest. You will never have to purchase soil amendment again.

Following Kirstens demonstration, Joel rom J. Appleseed Food Garden Company is going to

give a step by step demonstration o the methods you can use at home using your compost to create

your own benecial soil or your garden beds.

Marney Blair rom Nevada Countys Green Gold Program, will introduce you to a wide variety o

dierent composting systems available rom commercial products to ones you can create at home

with very little or no cost and how to use them. Marney will also provide an example o what to

expect to see at the various stages o composting and the wonderul soil end product you will haveat the end o the composting cycle.

From there, they will show you how to introduce your worm castings and traditional compost

into J. Appleseeds low cost take home raised garden bed kits which will be available at the show at

    discounted prices or show attendees.

    J. Appleseed will demonstrate the advantages o raised bed gardening as well as:

Frontier Angel Soap, established by Diane Longacre in 2003 near her home town o Mountain

View, Caliornia, came about through Dianes interest in history, traditional hand crats, and apreerence or natural products. She began by supplying riends and amily with handmade soap

and what started as a hobby soon grew into a successul home based business.

All the products at Frontier Angel are made by hand rom proprietary ormulas with a natural-

as-can-be philosophy in mind. Diane preers to use only vegetable based raw ingredients, while

striving to use locally sourced ingredients in her products whenever possible.

Frontier Angel soap can be ound in various specialty stores throughout Nevada County and at

local armers markets during the summer months.

Diane is a participating Back to Basics vendor at this years Fall Home & Harvest Festival, teaching

you the step o making soap rom your home. Stop by and listen to Dianes demonstration on

Making Soap rom Grocery Store Ingredientson Saturday rom 12:30 to 1 p.m. and Sunday rom

    1 to 1:30 p.m.

    Soap 101

True bar soap is made by dissolving sodium hydroxide (also known as lye) in water then

combining it with ats or oils. The chemical process that takes place is known as saponication

Once the process o saponication is complete, the lye and oil molecules have combined and

chemically changed into soap plus glycerin. There is no lye present in the nished bars o soap.

Glycerine The GoodMost o the cleansing bars sold commercially are not real soap any more, called syndet bars

or synthetic detergent bars and are made rom synthesized chemicals, llers, petrochemicals,

preservatives, synthetic dyes and articial ragrances.

Synthetic detergent bars have had their naturally occurring glycerine removed during a milling

process. The soap company then sells their glycerine to another company who uses it as a benecial

additive to their products. Glycerine is not only benecial in soap, but its also good in lotion and

    cream as well.

Glycerine is a skin soothing emollient, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin and whileeliminated rom syndet bars, about 20 percent o naturally occurring glycerine is retained in

    handmade soap.

    Scent Sense

Most, i not all, commercial detergent bars are articially scented, even some handmade soaps

    contain articial ragrances.

Some soaps may seem to be naturally scented but really are not. For example, ragrances such

as cucumber or strawberry, most ruits, and some fowers (lilac, honeysuckle, etc.) are not available

naturally and are actually created in the lab by blending sometimes hundreds o aroma chemicals.

Rare fower essences such as jasmine

    are available, but exorbitantly

expensive and its not cost eect or

    soap makers.

    Real handmade soap should be

    naturally scented with essential oils.

Essential oils are distilled or pressed

rom the leaves and fowers o plantsand can easily be identied on an

    ingredient label as peppermint oilor

    lavender essential oil.

    Animal, Vegetable or Mineral?

    When choosing your personal

    cleansing product, also consider

    whether you preer vegetable based

products or animal. Some commercialcleansing bars contain tallow also

known as sodium tallowate. Tallow is

    the at rom cows.

While animal at is cheap and easily

    accessible, some handmade soap

makers, such as Frontier Angel Soap,

preer to go the all vegetable oil route,

utilizing olive, palm and coconut oils.

The synergy o dierent oils combineto create unique soap oerings.

    Some soap companies make their

soap with added mineral oil, which

is a transparent, colorless oil, related

to white petrolatum, and is also

    a by-product in the distillation o

    petroleum to produce gasoline. While

this doesnt sound like anything one

    would choose to clean themselves

with, it shows up as an ingredient in

detergent bars, baby oil, lotions and

    personal care companies.
