Cobar High School Soccer Report

On a cloudy Wednesday morning in Week 5, the Open Boys and Girls Soccer Teams were gearing up for a physical and mental battle. Their opposition – Bourke High School.

The girls showed some nerves as kick off commenced, with Bourke scoring the first goal 7 minutes into the first half. Following this, the team settled into their positions and used their communication skills to build defensive pressure and looked to pass up front. With ten minutes remaining in the first half, Bourke scored a second goal. With a fired up attacking line up, Midfielder Sandie Mitchell made quick work of this lead, scoring Cobar’s first goal 4 minutes later. Then, with lightning feet, Lucy Bell penetrated the defence 2 minutes later to score again, equalising the points at half time. Bourke looked tired heading off as the Cobar midfield started to find its groove with Sandie Mitchell, Tiana Jones, Madasan Taylor, Siobhan Utete and Juilet Awuku working extremely hard on and off the ball in the midfield.

The second half for the girls started just as strong as it finished with the formidable defence line of Abby Carswell, Lauren Urquhart, Hannah Carroll, Ebony Aumua, Zoe Carter, and Goalkeeper Brennah Aumua, making light work of anything that came their way. Leading a strong attack, Midfielder Sarah Morley capitalised off a miskick that rebounded into a Bourke defender, then into their own goals. Madasan Taylor out wide made a breakaway several minutes later to bring Cobar’s score 4-2. In the dying last minute of the game, Lucy Bell received a pass from Georgie Buckman to seal the girls win 5-2.

In the boys game Cobar pressured Bourke into early mistakes but the last pass or shoot let the Cobar team down. For the first thirty minutes Goal keeper Riley Porter had little to do, as the Cobar midfield and attack were parked in the Bourke half and more specifically their 18 yard box. Strikers Ryan Urquhart, Damon Bruce and Raymond Dennis asking lots of questions of the Bourke defence along with wide men Tommy Bryan and Luke Giurin. With five minutes remaining in the half a heavily marked Ben Griffiths broke free to score the first. Heading into half time one nil up.

The second half started with a goal from Ben Griffiths within the first 6 minutes giving Cobar a two goal advantage. The boys continued to work hard in the midfield through Braydee Mackay, Oisin McMullen, Conor McMullen and Zac Broughton. This continued pressure allowed Ben to complete his hat-trick, becoming a regular occurrence against Bourke. Cobar hit the back of the net again through Ryan Urquhart to round out four Cobar goals. The defence of Dylan Morley, Ashley Davies and skipper Rob Grant having little trouble for the duration of the game, until the final two minutes where Bourke scored a well-deserved goal.

Both teams will now travel to Broken Hill High School on Thursday March 21 for the second round of the Western Region Knockout competition. Good luck to all involved!
