As with most direct marketers, a few acquaintances introduced me to a method of earning additional income.

The concept of operating such a business appealed to me, but the core values of some companies made me question if I would have the opportunity to help others in some way other than coaching them on working a business plan. If I were to reach my goal of helping others with

their health and financial wellness, I would need to create the company myself.

The company has a significant presence in Asia, how did this happen?

As with everything in life, and especially in Direct Marketing, one’s success is dependent on the hard work and caring of those close to you. In other words, we are a global company because of the work and the beliefs of our associates.

When Reginald Stinson starts talking about the people on his team, you can hear his voice light up with excitement.

Chris Cannon had to learn responsibility at a very young age. He was born in Sarasota, Florida. When he was younger, he had an ideal family. As Chris grew up, he played baseball and worked as an actor in the entertainment business. In 1996, one of Chris’s teammates introduced him for the first time to the concept of network marketing. Chris was very intrigued and decided to give it a try. Chris tried everything in the next couple of years, and ended up losing about $30,000 in the process. Even though he really couldn’t afford it, he continued to go to all the training seminars and conferences that he could to improve his skills. ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY The lingering effects of a wave of negative media along with the more desperate, but effective efforts of hedge fund manager Bill Ackman to drive down the share value of Herbalife, continued to weigh down the MLM industry into the new year. Ackman spent $50 million to convince regulators that Herbalife was an illegal pyramid, and not only failed to initiate any action against them, he failed to even prevent their stock from rising 104%. This would have resulted in a loss of well over half-a-billion dollars! A phrase once used by the infamous Barry Minkow (a previous MLM short seller who is now in prison for stock fraud) was never more apropos – “Desperate times call for desperate measures”. Ackman’s efforts most of 2014 have involved terrifying Herbalife distributors into quitting (or prospects into not joining) by alluding to a “criminal” investigation by the FBI (cleverly without ever actually claiming there is one), allegedly targeting top leaders. This tactic, along with others equally as deceptive and demonstrably inaccurate, have finally begun to beat down sales growth. Of course, industry critics are celebrating, and indulging themselves in the feast of negative online and news media portrayals of Ackman’s anti-Herbalife propaganda.

Per the above chart, pro-MLM commentary has consistently been more than twice the amount produced by anti-MLM commentators, peaking in September of 2010. A mild downtrend seemed to be concluding with an up-tick in late 2011. But then came the BurnLounge final order (●), the onset of Ackman’s attacks on Herbalife (▲), Zeek Rewards closure by the SEC (◆), the FTC’s take down of Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing (■), and the FBI raid of TelexFree, which has pounded the Pro-Con comment ratio down to under 1.8. One reason the four closures still have a lingering effect on public sentiment years later has much to do with how these pyramid schemes are portrayed today by supposedly unbiased news, education, and reference sources. There are illegal pyramids who attempt to disguise themselves as legal, legitimate MLM companies–because they want to appear legal and legitimate. Authorities do recognize the distinction between the two disparate types of operations, and have unmasked a few imposters that were actually pyramid schemes. But once the wool has been removed exposing the wolf, we don’t keep calling it a sheep, right? Would anyone still refer to Barry Minkow as a “fraud buster”? Or Lance Armstrong as a “Tour de France winner”? Or Bernard Madoff as an “investment advisor”? Check out the Wikipedia pages for BurnLounge, FHTM, and TelexFree and note their current “Industry” category.

There were several high profile federal actions against quasi-MLM companies in the years just before the FTC’s case against Amway in 1975 (e.g. Holiday Magic, GerRoMa, and Koscot). So there were a lot of storm clouds lingering over MLM back then, too. But the court’s ruling in Amway’s (and for all intents and purposes the MLM industry’s) favor in 1979 provided over three decades of mostly clear, blue skies (with only an occasional shower). The FTC’s Ackman induced, nearly two year old investigation of Herbalife is a similar watershed moment in MLM history, as once again aspects of a company’s core business model, which apply to virtually all MLMs, are being challenged. And just as inevitably as it was back in ’79, this metaphorical Winter season will end, and it may not be much after the actual Winter season ends. The MLM industry has weathered many storms over the last 60-plus years, and each time it emerges better, safer, and wiser than it was. What doesn’t kill MLM really does make it stronger!

Since I started getting “noticed” by publications like Home Business Advertiser, I get requests almost weekly to “create a mailing system” for somebody’s company. Those requests usually come from a frustrated network marketer who likes his/her company, products, pay plan, etc. – but who HAS NO SYSTEM. Of course, I always say, “No thanks.” Why?

First of all, creating and operating any mailing system is a lot of work. It also requires up-front investments in mailing materials, leads, etc. I have a major mailing partner who operates one of our systems, and I operate two others myself. So we have our hands full already. The biggest downside of being a “downline builder” who operates a system is – you can easily become a slave to that system. It becomes a “job” instead of giving you the freedom you wanted. You can only farm out so much of the work, and I do want to “have a life.” I don’t want any employees, so hiring more people is not an option for me. We use fulfillment services to the extent possible, but they can be expensive, and the cost of using them must be factored into making the system pay for itself.

The second issue is not immediately obvious. The person who RUNS the system must be at the TOP of the organization using it! So when somebody wants to recruit me into their company to create a system, I can only offer it to those below me. Most companies only allow you to see your own downline, so you can’t track those from sideline organizations. Also, it makes no sense to provide a service

that costs you money for which you get nothing back in commissions and bonuses. So you really don’t want me BELOW you – you want me ABOVE you in the organization. The obvious solution might be for a company OWNER to run the system after I create it, but no owner has accepted that “offer” yet.

The third issue relates to the network marketing COMPANY and PRODUCTS being promoted. Here are the basic factors: product price point, pay plan requirements to advance, company openness to recruiting by mail, and mailing list demographics. Let’s begin with the last item. The readily available types of mailing lists that offer biz opp “seekers” or “buyers” contain mostly older people without a lot of financial resources. So if your monthly product price is greater than $50, you either have to get very creative (we have managed to do this for one company), or you have to go find a list of people with higher incomes. That puts you into list merging/purging and other things that get very complicated. We choose not to do that. Only those who really know what they’re doing should even attempt it.

What are the pay plan requirements for advancement? We’ve seen some plans where you must have five or more people on max order ($250+) on your first level in order to advance. Such a requirement is onerous no matter how you’re promoting, but it’s death to mail recruiting. It also discourages building DEPTH, which in my opinion is the KEY to success in network marketing, and especially so by mail.

As I’ve said before, every network marketing company is “different” in terms of what they allow and how effective recruiting by mail can be. Most require some type of approval of the marketing materials you’re sending out. The two “biggies” are: don’t make income or medical claims. But some companies actually discourage marketing by mail. They put up so many roadblocks, your hands are tied. Others insist that you only use THEIR (expensive) marketing materials. These companies are not mail friendly.

My advice to frustrated network marketers is: Find somebody who is running a successful system for a company you like and join THEIR system. Most people who try to go out and create their own systems fail. It’s harder than you think.

Is Your Company “Mail Friendly”?

The biggest challenge every network marketer faces is what I call the “R&R” problem – Recruiting and Retention. How can you get people in, and how do you get them to stay? R&R rears its ugly head no matter how you’re building your business. Today, I’m going to show you why you must have a SYSTEM if you have any hope of success.

What is a “system”, anyway? It’s the method you use over and over again to bring new people into your business, and it’s also the method you teach them to use to do the same thing. That’s what keeps them in – having a way to succeed. “Traditional” approaches focus on word of mouth and the “warm market.” You invite people you KNOW to a meeting, webinar or website. Nothing wrong with that. However, the day will come when you run out of warm market. Everybody does. So your “system” needs to also be able to address the COLD market (people you don’t know).

The awful truth is, I struggled with this for years. I hated making phone calls and inviting people to meetings. It’s why I turned to direct mail. But direct mail, like the Internet, is just another medium. It’s not a system. A postcard or flyer is not a system. A website is not a system. A phone script is not a system. A “system” is a set of repeatable ACTIONS that can and will be DUPLICATED by anyone and everyone in your entire downline. It’s designed to help everyone who does anything find success.

Building a system is harder than it looks… not to mention expensive. If you’re new to network marketing, I highly recommend

you find a good system that someone else has created and use that. And, if you sign on to use a system, don’t try to “re-invent the wheel.” If it’s working, use it. The system owner/manager has probably tested it extensively. He or she knows more than you do. If you don’t believe that, you shouldn’t be using their system!

Obviously, my favorite systems are those that use direct mail, and specifically those that use postcards. Why? Anybody can mail a postcard. And anybody receiving a postcard can see the message—there’s no envelope, no opening and deleting an email, etc. It’s the cheapest form of direct mail and still the most effective. Direct mail can also reach the millions of people who are not online. Think about it: EVERYONE IS OFF-LINE, but not everyone is online. I know people who can make hundreds of cold calls a day and get signups. I know others who can drive thousands of people to a website. But most people can’t do those things, so they are not very duplicatable. That’s why I strongly prefer direct mail.

Every network marketing company is “different” in terms of what they will allow you to do and how effective recruiting by mail can be. Most require some type of approval of the marketing materials you’re sending out. Another reason to go with an approved (and proven) system someone else created. Each company has unique aspects in terms of pay plans, volume and monthly order requirements, ability to move people around, etc. Those features can be used to great advantage in

a system.

Personally, I like “two-step” systems that include some type of product sample in the response information. Postcards are mailed to cold lists to generate business prospects. I usually require some type of “shipping and handling fee” to help pay for the system and to qualify for an information package. A system that loses money for the founder/manager is going to fail, and that doesn’t help anybody. But if you’re a system manager, don’t get greedy, because that will kill your system, too.

As a trainer for the Professional Networkers team in 4Life Research over the past 15 years, I have had the opportunity to assist people all over the United States and the world in realizing and bringing to fruition, their hopes and dreams.

Guejendiran and his mother lived in a poor village not far from the Indian Ocean.
