TERM 2 WEEK 2 9 MAY 2019

GEORGE STREET, BERKELEY, 2506 | P 42711171 | E [email protected]

Staffing update This term we welcome Tegan Davies who is teaching Djeera and supervising Stage 3 and to Clayton Whitford who is teaching Djeera on Tuesday and Lilly Pilly on Wednesday. Clayton is also one of our regular casuals on the other days. Cheryl Trusket will return next week after spending time at the Sydney Writers Festival. Mother’s Day Stall I would sincerely like to thank our P&C for running the Mother’s Day stall this week so that each child had an opportunity to purchase a gift for that special person in their life. My best wishes to all mothers, hoping you have a very special day on Sunday and that you are spoilt by your love ones.

Kind regards Wayne Osborne Principal

District Cross Country

Congratulations to the 40 students who attended the District Cross Country on Tuesday 7 May at Kembla Joggers running track, Brownsville. All the students ran well and a number of students finished in the top five and will now attend the regional cross country carnival at Nowra. The students’ behaviour and performance on the day was wonderful and they should all be proud of their efforts.

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE ANZAC Day A huge thank you to Ms Kydes for organising our moving ANZAC Day ceremony and to our special guests Ms Okoniowski and Mr John Gunn for attending. Mr Gunn was previously a student here at Berkeley Public School during the 1950’s. Mr Gunn delivered a short speech to the staff and students recounting the use of the navy. I would also like to thank our school leaders Anthony Stevceski, Eva Nyers-Saunders, Micah Leimbach and Zaleigh Hart for their contributions and informative readings during the ceremony and all the students who brought in flower to lay on the memorial. We are lucky to live in a country where we are able to vote and feel safe in our everyday life. We thank all those who have fought for our country. Attendance Well done to all of the students who achieved 95% attendance during Term 1. These students were presented with a certificate at the end of the term for coming to school every day and had a small celebration party. Congratulations to Kindergarten – Banksia who won the overall highest attendance for Term 1. They will have a class party in the next few weeks to celebrate their great achievement. Teacher Professional Learning This term our teachers will continue to receive ongoing professional learning to ensure we are delivering high quality educational programs. The programs include:

continued professional development in the L3 literacy program refining how we teach reading and writing in K-2 classrooms.

Building Numeracy Leaders – where we reflect on current knowledge in the teaching of mathematics across the school and continue to refine our process and inquiry.

Building Literacy Leaders and working with the highly respected Jann Farmer-Hailey who delivers two masterclasses each term to a community of schools and then provides individual coaching sessions to our school leaders twice a term.

Staff will also be released from class this term to review student learning, set new goals for students’ progress and provide 1-1 feedback with each student in their class. During these times, relieving teachers will continue to follow the normal class program that has been set by the classroom teacher.

Life Education We are very fortunate to have the Life Education Van visiting our school in Week 3 and Week 4. The Life Education Van is a mobile classroom, which provides students with the opportunity to learn about aspects of personal development and health.

This program is being funded by the University of Wollongong which means that it is free for the students of Berkeley Public School. We are looking forward to seeing Healthy Harold!

PBL Update We will now be presenting students with ‘Student of the Term’ awards and not ‘Students of the Month’. Students who receive a PBL certificate during the term will be candidates for the ‘Student of the Term’ award. One student from each stage will be chosen. Awards will be given to students who have displayed exceptional behaviour and followed the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Safety and Cooperation. Students who receive this outstanding recognition will be presented with a certificate, a trophy, have their photo displayed in the school office foyer, and be invited at a special afternoon tea with their parents and Mr Osborne in celebration of this wonderful achievement. Berkeley Public school would like to congratulate the following students who have achieved Student of the Month for Term 1 2019. Azalie Maude from Early Stage 1, Tamara-Lee Lindley from Stage 1, Aron Saliu from Stage 2 and Imogen Piper from Stage 3. These very deserving students are a credit to our school. Congratulations!

WAGOLL’S

This Term in Wollomai we have been learning to write Persuasive Texts. The students have been working on their writing by using the writing process and listening to peer feedback. Here are some their of persuasions. We hope you enjoy them. Mrs Hollick How Can You Make Our World A Better Place I strongly believe that we can make our country even better by being kind and polite to each other. We need to work together to make our world an even greater place to live. We can do this by working together to save our environment. Working together can be like making people happy and helping each other. Making people happy can be easy, all you have to do is smile. Having a sad face means you are using more muscles but if you smile you use less and people usually smile back at you. You can work together by putting rubbish in the bin and not in our ocean. You can stop cutting down trees because they give oxygen for us and are our animal’s homes. If everyone picked up a couple of pieces of rubbish we are all doing it together to keep our country clean. So if you see some rubbish pick it up. No matter what country you come from, you can make somebody’s day by being polite and kind. We can all be nice and caring. I strongly believe all these things can help to make our world an even better one. By Tamzin How Can You Make Our World A Better Place I strongly believe that we can make our world a better place by being kind to each other. We can be polite to each other and it would make our world a better one. We can do this by helping each other and working together to stop pollution and it will save Mother Nature. We need to protect our animals. Little acts of kindness are good to do every day and you should share it with the world. I can help or you can help with all the little acts of kindness for your family and other people. If you see someone upset it doesn’t matter what country they come from you can always help them. You can offer them help, it is not hard to be kind to everyone. These are some ways I think we can definitely make our world a better place. By Hinemoa How You Can make Our Country A Better Place I strongly believe that we can make our country a better place just by being kind and nice to everyone. We all need to work together to make our country a better one. We can stop pollution and littering. We need to stop littering on both land and sea because it might kill sea life. Everyone could pick up three pieces of rubbish at the beach and it would save a lot of sea life. Another way is we could help heaps of people and be kind to others. People might fall over, you should help them. When an old person is carrying their groceries help them out by carrying them for them. It did not take one or two people to build this school or country, it took lots of people working together to build it. They had to share their knowledge to make the country a great place. If someone is lonely you could play with them. If you see someone sad, smile and be nice to them. It might also put a smile on your face. These are some ways I think we can make our country a better place. By Ashton
