It is easier for children to wander into a pool that is at ground-level, which could give above-ground pools a slight safety advantage. But above-ground pools that are built with a deck surrounding them are not necessarily safer.

No one should be allowed to play around the pool or swim unattended. Keeping careful watch can prevent injuries or death.Property taxes

In some areas of the country, the installation of an in-ground pool is considered a permanent modification and can

increase property taxes. An above-ground pool can be removed, and is therefore not a permanent change. Property taxes may remain unaffected.

Before installing a pool, homeowners should check with the municipal office to see if permits are needed and what the regulations regarding pools may be. Electrical wiring, pool placement and water fill-up may have to be worked on to avoid fines.

A pool can be a welcome addition to the yard. Depending on price range and amenities desired, the choice will have to be made between above-ground and in-ground styles.

CAN pools and lawnscohabitate?

Many question if chlorinated pool water poses any ill effects on the grass in the backyard. In addition to splash-out of water during fun times in the pool, water will also be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will flood the grass when it is necessary to clean and "backwash" the filter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not.

Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlorine levels contained in regular tap water. You would not hesitate to turn on the hose to water your lawn, so you should not be overly concerned about pool water, particularly if you are stringent about maintaining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can withstand chlorine at high acid levels and is pretty resilient about self-correcting. Furthermore, grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate them.

Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlorine will essentially be used up and pose no additional threat.

Some people have actually said that watering your lawn with pool water can be an eco-friendly way of curbing water usage. Therefore, it may be safely used on lawns and most flowering plants. It is unadvisable to water vegetable gardens with pool water because of any trace levels of other chemicals that may be found in the pool water.

Homeowners who are still concerned about exposing their lawns to pool water can create a buffer zone around the pool. In-ground pools are traditionally bordered by concrete or patio blocks. Place stone or mulch around the perimeter of an above-ground pool to catch any splashes and to create a barrier between the pool and the lawn. Also, direct backwashed water through a long tube and have it flow to an area away from the lawn.

Before you venture to your local grill store in search of a new barbecue, here are a few things to consider.What is your favorite grilled food?

If hamburgers, hot dogs and the occasional steak are as far as you get, there is a wide range of basic gas and charcoal grills to choose from. If, however, you are cooking a variety of meals and you do not want to be running in and out of the kitchen, a more elaborate setup might be better suited. A number of burners will give you more precise heat control, while side burners and rotisserie capability make it easy to impress your guests.How many people are you grilling for?

The cooking surface on grills can range from 250- to 1,000-square-inches. Small, space-conscious grills designed for condo living and empty nesters make preparing a meal for four to six people easy enough, but for more than that you will have to get creative. Grilling for between four and eight people and occasional crowds of 12, you should have 500 square inches or more. If you are preparing a feast on a regular basis, look for a grill that is equipped with two separate cooking surfaces (typically a larger cookbox at 725 square inches and smaller at 275 square inches). In addition to the cooking surface, look for the depth of the cookbox, allowing you to put a turkey or large roast on the grill.What are the burners like?

Cleaning Tips for the BarbecueYou will need: a sturdy bristle brush, grill cleaner,

toothpicks, soap and water, and a venturi brush.Step 1

Remove all the cooking grids, grates and burners and use a sturdy bristle brush to remove the buildup of grease on the inside of the oven. Using a grill cleaner, scrub the inside and outside of the oven and then rinse with water. Never use oven cleaner on your grill. It is corrosive and can damage the other components.Step 2

Inspect the burners, making sure there are no holes rusted through any of the components. If there are, it is time for a replacement. Clean out any clogged burner ports using a toothpick, being careful not to damage the ports. Check all igniter contacts to ensure they are not corroded or loose, and remove any debris from the electrode. Next, clean out the burner venturi tubes using a venturi brush. It is very important to keep these tubes clean. Spiders love to make nests in these tubes, creating blockages that can cause serious damage.Step 3

Examine the heat medium. If you have a heat plate, remove any grease buildup and make sure there are no holes rusted through. If you have briquettes, make sure they are not crumbling and the pores are not clogged with grease.Step 4

Check the cooking grids and make sure no welds are broken, and brush off any stuck-on residue. If you have cast iron cooking grids, season them with oil to help keep food from sticking and help prevent rust.Step 5

Inspect the gas hose to make sure there are not any cracks or leaks. This can easily be done by preparing a soapy solution and applying it to the connections at the tank and valve. Turn the tank on slowly and watch for bubbles to form, which indicates that there is a leak. Try tightening the connections and re-test. If persistent leaking or blistering is detected, stop using your grill and replace the gas assembly.

Finally, check the condition of your control knobs, thermometer, and handles. Replacing small items like this can refresh your grill and make it look new again.

Fresh flowers serve many purposes. A bouquet of flowers can be a gift on a special holiday or birthday. Some people apologize with flowers, while others use flowers to convey feelings of love or appreciation. Many people like to display fresh-cut flowers in their homes because their beauty can brighten the mood indoors. Others plant rows and rows of flowers in a garden with the express purpose of cutting them and bringing them into the home.

While outdoor flowers can remain beautiful and bountiful outside, once they are cut, there is a limited amount of time before they begin to wilt and wither. But there are ways to prolong the life of cut flowers to enjoy their beauty as long as possible.

r Cut correctly. Creating a large enough surface area on the stem for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water.

r Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they are actually submerged in water. However, you will probably be fine if you simply re-cut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms.

r Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life.

r Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you will have an opportunity to enjoy them longer.

r Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment. The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house. It has been said that adding a penny to the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide. An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic mouthwash.

r Keep flowers away from ... Do not place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place.

r Change the water. Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water.

By following a few strategies, you can keep fresh-cut flowers lasting longer for enjoyment.
