note From the manaGinG Directori have had the honor and the humbling task of heading a very unique company for more than a decade now. skultuna is both a very old company, founded in the year 1607 (by king karl iX of sweden) and also a very unique company in the aspect of the products that have been produced and are being produced. the uniqueness comes from the fact that skultuna still produces more or less the same gold shimmering brass objects today, and with almost the same kind of techniques as when the production started over four centuries ago. always with that same sense of timeless design and timeless quality.

Welcome to the world of skultuna!

the ProDuctFor over four centuries brass has been the core of skultuna. Brass is an alloy made of copper and zinc. the most important production techniques used to produce skultuna products are sand casting, pressure die casting, turning and metal spinning. the surface is then worked worked upon until a golden, mirror like finish is reached with techniques like blasting, sanding, grinding and brushing. On the Fashion accessories a thin layer of gold or silver plating is often put on top to keep them from tarnishing.

skultuna storesthe skultuna concept store opened in 2011 in the centre of stockholm. the store is designed by the renown swedish architect thomas sandell, the goal of the shop design is to link the history and the iconic material of skultuna, to the present in a classy and modern way. in the later half of 2015 the skultuna Flagship store opened at the foundry in skultuna, it is based on the same concept as the store in stockholm.

1607skultuna was founded by king karl iX of sweden on the 11th of February 1607. this is the dated order to the local magistrate to set up the foundry.

1911king Gustaf Vi adolf celebrates the 300-year anniversary (on the wrong date).

1611the production starts. until 1922 this was believed to be the founding year, therefore the logotype read skultuna 1611 up until 1922.

1619the year of the oldest dated product; the chandelier in the church of our Lady in Enköping. The first master braziers were Walloons who brought the technique how to make large objects like chandeliers.

1671The first big fire hit Skultuna, it devas-tated most of the factory. there were similar fires in 1780 and in 1913.

1895skultuna starts working with the designer carl hjalmar norrström, one of the most recognized designers at the time. the designs are made in the ruling historical eclectic style.

1818The extreme spring flood in 1818 swept away most of the factory.

1900carl hjalmar norrström won the Gold medal at the World expo in Paris for a magnificent baptizing font.

1800in the 15th and 16th century, the design work was part of the craftsmanship. at the end of 17th century, processes and work methods were standardized. this was the foundation of what we today call industrial design.

1922the original dated order to set up thefoundry on February 11th 1607 is foundin the state archives, the logotype ischanged to skultuna 1607.

1950the silversmith Pierre Forssell was employed. he contributed with fabulous products during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. his designs are very much character-ized as scandinavian of that time.

1980the famous designer sigvard Berna-dotte designs a series of products for the dining table.

2007skultuna turns 400-years, crown Princess Victoria visits skultuna and in-augurates a memorial over the founder king karl iX.

1999skultuna changes owner to the pres-ent one and starts the work with new design collaborations. Designers such as olof kolte, claesson koivisto rune and thomas sandell start working for skultuna.

2002The old and classic Crown cufflink is made in eight new colors, the start of the Fashion accessories collection.

2014the successful collaboration with the london based jewellery designer lara Bohinc is launched.

2014skultuna wins the Wallpaper Designawards for the best product design.

2015the new women´s fashion accessories with enamel patterns are launched.

2015Back to copper; a century ago skultuna produced a large number of products in copper, in 2015 skultuna released anumber of the present home collection in copper again.

2016skultuna launches s a number of the home collection items in silver plated brass.

karui coPPer DesiGn GamFratesi the karui trays are designed by GamFratesi for skultuna. the trays are made using metal spinning, a classic skultuna production technique. the leather comes from the leading swedish tannery tärnsjö, famous for their high quality leather and located close to skultuna in sweden. the GamFratesi studio was founded in 2006 by the Danish architect stine Gam and the italian architect enrico Fratesi. GamFratesi’s design takes its creative drive from a fusion of tradition and renewal and in an experimental approach to their chosen materials and techniques. Designed 2015.

karui Brass DesiGn GamFratesi staying true to the historic production methods of skultuna, monica Förster and her design studio came up with a series of Flower Pots made in the very old method of metal spinning. metal spinning is a production method that has been in constant use during the last centuries in skultuna and makes it possible to make large round three dimensional objects out of sheet metal. the Flower Pots resemble classical pots made of terracotta with a small inclination in the lower part. the lilY canDlestick DesiGn iVar Ålenius BJörkIvar Ålenius Björk (1905 – 1978) worked as a sculptor, mostly known for bust portraits. His public ornaments can be seen in many swedish towns. he also designed a series of brass candlesticks for a swedish manufacturer called Ystad-metall that closed down in 1969. the lily candlestick was one of these products and it has become a modern design classic that has featured in many international design magazines to this day. in agreement with the relatives of ivar Ålenius Björk, skultuna has now started the production of the lily candlestick again. Designed for the world fair in new York 1939.

the Wilkinson DesktoP series DesiGn lara Bohincthe Wilkinson desktop series is designed by the internationally renowned jewellery designer lara Bohinc. it is made of semi etched brass plate and consist of two frames, a pen holder, a letter rack and a small container - The desktop series is named after the artist Norman Wilkinson, credited to inventing the dazzle pattern. The pattern is inspired by dazzle camouflage pattern, which is an unlikely form of camouflage as it draws attention to the object rather than hiding it, the purpose was confusion rather than concealment. Dazzle was partially inspired by cubism and Picasso. This series is also inspired by futurists Edward Wadsworth and David Bomberg with its fast, jaggered moving lines says lara Bohinc. ink DesktoP series DesiGn emma olBersEmma Olbers was born and raised in Gothenburg. She moved in her twenties to Stockholm where she was educated first at nyckelvikens art school and then at Beckmans college of Design. in 1999 she founded her studio and asplund and ire furniture became major clients. The Ink desktop series is the first collaboration with Skultuna and it consists of a pen holder and a small container.

Via FonDaZZa DesiGn Paolo Dell’elcethe vase series Via Fondazza is a project by the italian designer Paolo Dell’elce. the work is inspired by the archetypal subjects represented in the still life paintings by the artist Giorgio morandi whose work was based on a thorough research in the balance between shapes and proportions. Pierre Forsell worked for Skultuna between 1955 to 1986, a period for over thirty years. Pierre Forssell was one ofthe designers who helped to give skultuna a new status in modern design with his modernist design. Pierre Forssellsucceeded the legendary erik Fleming at skultuna as the house designer.Pierre Forssell began his studies at the art academy in painting (where the famous Bengt lindström was hisclassmate), soon after he moved to the silversmith department where he was later a teacher of silverware (at theage of twenty six). It was at the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg his typical design first aroused great attention. PierreForssell also designed a wide range of objects over the years, here are some of the iconic products that have becomevery popular in the later years among collectors of modernist design objects. today skultuna have three PierreForssell designs in production, they can be seen on the next page.

timeline DesiGn luca nichettothe italian designer luca nichetto has designed timeline that recalls the very old tradition of polishing away the oxidation that ac-cumulates over time on the surface of the traditional bronze doorhandles of Venetian doors. even after a good polishing, these objects, which can assume a myriad of different forms, usually retain the darker areas of oxidation in the interstices that the polisher’s cloth or brush cannot reach. inspired by this, timeline’s decorative character is created precisely through the process of oxidation, which gener-ates a pattern of circular grooves on the objects’ brass surface over time, in other words timelines.
