What WiLL it Look Like?

What can i expect? The Board has decided unanimously that La Academia will begin the 2020-2021 academic year remotely, Scenario 3, for all students for the first six weeks. The Board will revisit its decision on September 30th, 2020 and re- evaluate the level of risk to our students, faculty and staff for returning to in-person / hybrid instruction in October 2020. Please read below and get a ‘sneak peek’ at what Remote ONLY will look like for this year at La Academia.

i. the FiRst Weeks oF schooL WiLL Be deVoted to commUnitY BUiLding and digitaL competence

Although it is tempting to dive right into the curriculum, La Academia will devote the early weeks of Remote Learning to building community and help students feel connected. Social-Emotional skills will be woven in at this time, as will practice with our digital tools and distance learning platform.

Parents, don’t worry! In late August / early September, we will make sure those of you who need devices, as indicated by your response on La Academia’s Return to School Survey, have them. We also purchased English Language Arts and Math workbooks- which will be distributed at the same time. We heard you- regarding the workbooks- and we are here for you!

ii. commUnication With paRents and oppoRtUnities to commUnicate With paRents, WiLL Be FReQUent, stReamLined, and pRedictaBLe

Parents, we know that you are also adjusting to this way of doing school- while balancing the rest of your lives. Because you will be playing such a prominent role in your students learning, we understand that you too will need support. We really need you as partners, so this is what we promise:

1. A consistent mode and predictable schedule for communications: Weekly updates to keep you informed about what is going on in your child’s class and at school; a clear

understanding of where and when to look for information; and multiple platforms for outgoing information to make sure it finds you.

2. Clear expectations and boundaries for communication: If you or your student need help outside your child’s teacher’s office hours, or help with technology who do you call? This information will be made clear soon. Stay tuned.

3. Multimodal communication: It’s important to provide communication and opportunities for communication in different ways- sometimes in writing, other times in person, or perhaps a bi-weekly video- so parents can choose what works best for them.

4. Provide parent technology trainings: As a parent, and as your child’s first teacher, you will be better able to support your student if you understand how to use the technology. Please know we will be providing you with workshops and tutorials on the technology your child will be using, including the platforms we use to disseminate information.

iii. commUnitY and connections WiLL Be a LeadeRship pRioRitY, too

Faculty and teachers will need to connect now more than ever. We are committed to building in to the week regular opportunities for faculty and staff to stay connected with their colleagues during these difficult times.

1. Staff meetings & Professional Learning Communities (PLC’S) will be held regularly to keep staff connected

2. Leadership commitment to focus to the faculty and staff’s well-being and emotional health

iV. instRUctionaL design

Meeting the challenges of online learning will require our faculty not only to work with each other, but to work closely with our Dean of Academics, Deans of Culture, Math & Reading Specialists, School Counselor, Psychologist and the list goes on. Together we will look to meet the needs of all students, partnering with each other to plan instruction, design cross-curricular projects, and meet student’s needs (like technology instruction and social-emotional support) to ensure success.

V. Face to Face time FoR actiVe LeaRning

Online instruction is made up largely of asynchronous instruction, which students can access at any time, and “face-to-face” or synchronous opportunities. These synchronous meetings between teacher/student will provide for more interactive, engaging work because if we want students showing up, if we want them to know that this is worth their time it really needs to be something active and engaging for them. Any time student and teacher can work with the material, share further thoughts on it and have a discussion – we’ll take it!

Vi. content WiLL Be simpLiFied, Yet RigoRoUs

Online instruction is not conducive to covering large amounts of content, so you have to choose wisely. Teaching the most important things at a slower pace, maybe, is critical. To make those choices, teachers will be asking some key questions:

What really holds leverage for the students? What has endurance? What knowledge is essential?

What knowledge and skills do students need to have before they move to the next grade level or the next class?

What practices can be emphasized that transfer across many content areas? Skills like analyzing, constructing arguments, building a strong knowledge base through texts, and speaking can all be taught through many different subjects.

What tools can serve multiple purposes? Students can use things they find around the house, like toilet paper rolls, to fulfill other assignments, and then submit their work with a photo.

Vii. instRUctions WiLL Be easY to Find, expLicit and commUnicated in manY modes

Because teachers are not in the same room with students, their instructions have to be crystal clear. To this end, teachers will:

Provide instructions in a consistent location(ZOOM) and at a consistent time. Student lessons will be set up so that students know how to log on and where to find instructions every time.

Make instructions explicit. Read and re-read, say and say it again- that’s what teachers will do to make sure their instructions are as clear as possible.

Offer multimodal instructions. Teachers will provide sometimes written, sometimes video instructions for assignments, so students can choose the format that works best for them. They will also offer different synchronous daily meeting times so you can choose times that will work best for your student

Viii. gRading pRactices and FeedBack

Grading is an important part of teaching, and giving feedback is equally important. During Remote Learning at La Academia, your student will receive grades and feedback to help focus them, to influence their performance in positive ways, encourage their participation and guide the teacher in course content. Your students’ progress will be monitored through multiple data points and assessments. Parents will receive weekly reports delineating student strengths and areas of challenge. Clear grading criteria for assignments and tests will be established.

Las habilidades socio-emocionales se entretejerán en este momento, así como la práctica con nuestras herramientas digitales y la plataforma de aprendizaje a distancia.

¡Padres, no se preocupen! A finales de agosto / principios de septiembre, nos aseguraremos de que aquellos de ustedes que necesiten equipos electrónicos, como se indica en su respuesta en la Encuesta de Regreso a la Escuela de La Academia, los tengan. iV. diseño instRUccionaL

Para enfrentar los desafíos del aprendizaje en línea se requerirá que nuestra facultad no sólo trabaje entre sí, sino que trabaje estrechamente con nuestra Decana Académico, Decanas de Cultura, Especialista en Matemáticas y Lectura, Consejera Escolar, Psicóloga y la lista continúa. Juntos buscaremos satisfacer las necesidades de todos los estudiantes, colaborando unos con otros para planificar la instrucción, diseñar proyectos interdisciplinarios y satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes (como la instrucción tecnológica y el apoyo socio-emocional) para asegurar el éxito.

V. tiempo caRa a caRa paRa eL apRendiZaje actiVo

La instrucción en línea se compone en gran medida de instrucción asincrónica, a la que los estudiantes pueden acceder en cualquier momento, y de oportunidades "cara a cara" o sincrónicas. Estos encuentros sincrónicos entre maestro/estudiante proporcionarán un trabajo más interactivo y atractivo porque si queremos que los estudiantes se presenten, si queremos que sepan que esto vale su tiempo, realmente tiene que ser algo activo y atractivo para ellos. Vi. eL contenido seRÁ simpLiFicado, peRo RigURoso

La instrucción en línea no es propicia para cubrir grandes cantidades de contenido, por lo que hay que elegir sabiamente. Enseñar las cosas más importantes a un ritmo más lento, tal vez, es crítico. Para tomar esas decisiones, los maestros harán algunas preguntas clave:

¿Qué es lo que realmente tiene influencia sobre los estudiantes? ¿Qué es lo que tiene resistencia? ¿Qué conocimientos son esenciales?

¿Qué conocimientos y habilidades deben tener los estudiantes antes de pasar al siguiente nivel o a la siguiente clase?

¿Qué prácticas se pueden destacar que se transfieren a través de muchas áreas de contenido? Habilidades como el análisis, la construcción de argumentos, la construcción de una base de conocimientos sólida a través de textos y la expresión oral pueden enseñarse a través de muchas asignaturas diferentes.

¿Qué herramientas pueden servir para múltiples propósitos? Los estudiantes pueden usar cosas que encuentran en la casa, como rollos de papel higiénico, para cumplir con otras tareas, y luego presentar su trabajo con una foto.

Vii. Las instRUcciones seRÁn FÁciLes de encontRaR, expLícitas Y comUnicadas de mUchas maneRas

Debido a que los maestros no estaran en el mismo espacio que los estudiantes, sus instrucciones deben ser claras. Para este fin, los maestros:

Proveerán instrucción por un medio consistente (ZOOM) y a una hora consistente. lecciones de los estudiantes se establecerán de forma tal que los estudiantes sepan cómo conectarse y dónde encontrar las instrucciones.

También ofrecerán diferentes reuniones sincrónicas en diferentes horas para que puedan escoger las horas que funcionan mejor para su estudiante.

Viii. RetRoaLimentaciÓn Y pRÁticas paRa La caLiFicaciÓn

La calificación es una parte importante de la enseñanza, y proveer retroalimentación es igualmente importante. Durante la Instrucción Remota en La Academia, su estudiante recibirá calificaciones y retroalimentación para ayudar a mantenerlos enfocados , influenciar su aprovechamiento de forma positiva, motivar su participación y dirigir al maestro en el contenido del curso. El progreso de su estudiante sera monitoreado mediante múltiples formas de recopilación de datos y evaluaciones. Los padres recibirán reportes semanales delineando las fortalezas de los estudiantes, así como las áreas de desafío. Se establecerán criterios claros para calificar los trabajos asignados y pruebas.
